  1. I frequently do crossword puzzles and am always buying the New York Times Easy Crossword Puzzle books. This one is really disappointing, it has many of the same puzzles as The New York Times Crosswords for a Lazy Afternoon : 200 Easy, Breezy Puzzles
. It was a waste to spend money on this book when it has the same puzzles as the other book. It sucks to open up to a random page and have the puzzle be exactly the same as one I have already done. I wanted an easy crossword book, that just makes it too easy.

  2. I felt compelled to write a review because the only other one gives it 1 star because it had puzzles from another book!

The puzzles in this book are well done, easy but not too easy (I've only finished a few alone). The book is well made and sturdy and holds up well in the bathroom where we keep it.

If you are looking for great puzzles to work the mind and don't own every other crossword book by Will Shortz this is the crossword puzzle book for you.

  3. The NYT puzzles start out easy on Monday and grow progressively more challenging through the end of the week. This is a Monday-Tuesday book of puzzles.

  1. I gave this as a gift to a friend that loves to do crossword puzzles. We were laughing hysterically at the puzzle titles and some of the clues!! Lot's of fun!

  2. A fun book. Very different crosswords. It has a way of letting you know how out of touch you are with certain parts of the world.

  1. I guess you would have to say I'm a New York Times crossword puzzle fanatic. But because this book was edited by Fred Piscop, known to me from his occasional puzzles at the Times, I decided to give a couple volumes of this series a try. Well, I was amply rewarded. These are moderately difficult Sunday puzzles (and you know what I mean if you do the Times Sunday puzzles) which are just enough different from those in the Times that they represented a pleasant challenge for me. Piscop's sense of humor, as seen in the definitions, is unique (and different from that of the NYT's Will Shortz) and I literally found myself laughing out loud at times.

  1. I appreciate this dictionary for its consistant knowledge of major authors, books, countries, mythology and other traditional information. It is, however, missing most current pop culture information about movies, actors...etc.

  2. I had a previous edition of this dictionary, so essentially knew what I was getting. Of all the crossword puzzle dictionaries I have, this is the most comprehensive and useful - I refer to it more than any of the others.

  3. Very helpful and much better organized than other crossword dictionaries I've tried. It's a bit out of date and often things you'd expect to find aren't there, but it is very useful, especially for movie, sports, geography, place names, etc.

  4. I bought this and the MILLION WORD DICTIONARY for my Mom. She liked them both but found this one slightly less useful than the other. Still a good dictionary though.

  5. This is the best crossword puzzle I've looked at. It's vastly superior to the N.Y. Time offering. I pretty exclusively work on their puzzles but from my point of view, their dictionary is almost unusable. I've also found this to be an incredibly handy basic thesaurus...

3 comments about Los Angeles Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus, Volume 4 (LA Times).
  1. A must-buy for those who want challenging, clever and sometimes witty crossword puzzles. I'd rate the degree of difficulty as being just below that of The Washington Post. Lots of Hollywood references make it a bit more fun for those who love old movies. I also appreciated the fact that every LA Times puzzle book I've worked to date contains actual words, not misspellings or created ones.

  2. I just finished Volume 5(200 puzzles)of the Los Angeles Times puzzle book and got hooked on the author's clues so I wanted more...... I am finding this book to be nearly everything that volume 5 was, except for the paper. This book was done on newsprint paper. I believe the author's had some feedback about this, as the follow-up books are all done in typing paper quality.

Never-the-less, the puzzles are highly enjoyable and the book is certainly worth working.

  3. Not as good as some I've had, but all in all pretty good. It has a lot of words I've never heard of, and that always gets me a little frustrated.
Some of the puzzles are very clever, however.

  1. These puzzles are absolutely hilarious! Yet again, I'm blown away by the exquisite surprises, twists and turns. I've been stumped on a few of them for a few days now, but I'm not giving up! Shortz is, hands down, a genius. Try your hand at the masterful art within these pages, and enjoy the furrowed brow and laughs!

2 comments about The New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzles Volume 29: 50 Sunday puzzles from the pages of The New York Times (New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzles).
  1. While some of the authors create quite difficult puzzles, most of these are enjoyable and challenging. Solving them is a great way to start the day or to end the day.

  2. I love this spiral-bound book. I was a little apprehensive that someone may have started some puzzles, but no. Book was brand new at 5 yrs. old. Frankly, I'd rather have my puzzles in a book, than to have newsprint all over me. Ok, so shipping ups the ante quite a bit, but on this, I'm willing to splurge occasionally.

3 comments about The New York Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus Volume 7: 200 World-Famous Sunday Puzzles from the Pages of The New York Times.
  1. This version and all NY times Crossword Books published by
ST MARTIN'S GRIFFIN are poorly done copies of books earlier done by RANDOM HOUSE. These books are cheaper but the quality is much poorer. The Type face is not as bold and paper quality is poor (pages tear easily with erasures). Also the title of each puzzle is lacking making solving extremely difficult where duoble letter squares are used or the spelling of answers is related to the title clue.

  2. Noting the other review, I do agree somewhat with the "materials and construction" complaint, but these delightful Sunday treats remain wonderfully literate, urbane, witty challenges. Now that the AMA has noted the therapeutic value of crosswords at warding off various age-related cognitive difficulties, I say bring on more and better puzzle anthologies for the masses!

  3. I have been enjoying NY Times Sunday Crosswords for years edited by others. But these, edited by Will Shortz, I find loaded with rarely if never used words. I have had two years of college, one at U of C at Berkeley, majoring in English and Literature. I love the English language as well as other languages and how they relate to each other.

These puzzles are not fun because the words are not fair.

2 comments about Easy Spanish Crossword Puzzles (Language - Spanish).
  1. These puzzles are a fantastic learning aid. For the beginning Spanish learner, I highly recommend them. If you are advanced, that is, if you can already understand 80% of the Spanish in Spanish radio programs, then they are too easy for you.

  2. These puzzles are not that easy and they aren't fun to do because not a lot of the words intersect so you don't get hints by filling in the words you do know first. They use odd words that a beginner would not be likely to know such as the word for axle (eje). The definitions are neither imaginative nor intuitive. Many words in the puzzles do not appear in the vocabulary list in the back of the book (e.g. mecadora and columpio).

I enjoy crossword puzzles and I love studying Spanish but I did not enjoy this book. It appears to have been very carelessly put together.

  1. I bought a BUNCH of these New York Times Crossword books for my mom including this one. She was very ardent about working puzzles and felt they helped her maintain her mental powers. I felt they did. I wondered if the print was TOO large but then it gave her a large work space as she savored the puzzles and kept returning to them. I also gave her a subscription to crosswords she could receive from them in the mail. During a visit, I was pleased to see she and a friend working them together. They are the perfect gift for an aging person who might be physically disabled but likes to stay on top of their game. Great stimulation!

  2. My Dad loves crosswords but they're always so small.. with this he doesn't need to wear his glasses. I see him at this book a lot! The puzzles really aren't that easy; they aren't the mind numbing challenges you'll get on Saturday and Sunday... more like Monday - Thursday's puzzles in the NY Times. Respectable levels of difficulty to keep you challenged yet able to complete. I DO find some he hasn't finished yet. My Dad's a pretty smart guy (Cornell grad) and I want to keep him that way... a great gift!

  3. These puzzles are NOT easy. I gave this book to my elderly mother in a nursing home to help pass the time and she cannot even start most of the puzzles.
It was a waste of money to buy this book.

  4. Not easy. I bought it for my 92 yr. old mother. The clues were not appropriate for the answers.
