5 comments about El libro de oro de los crucigramas.
  1. The cover suggests that these are conventional crossword puzzles. Actually, each page has perhaps twenty words in a grid that is 90% black squares. Understandably, it takes a greater knowledge of the language to have many interlocking words, but this is silly.
In addition, the words don't seem chosen for any particular purpose in learning Spanish. For example, one clue written in Spanish contains the words Shirley McClaine and _____ La Douce. Great for people who remember the old movie with a French title, but filling in IRMA doesn't seem all that helpful for any likely audience.

  3. I was disappointed in this book because, although the picture on the cover looked more crossword style, the puzzles were all crucigram style. The questions were very hard and several were related to Mexico, which I know little about.

  4. this crossword puzzle book arrived quickly. My father-in-law enjoys it. This is the only crossword puzzle book I found in SPanish that is not for beginners.

  5. This book requires that the puzzle user know more Spanish than I do. In the case of the first puzzle:Aeronáutica, I know very little about the subject matter. So, I had to look up words in the clue in order to have a try at the answer. I would have liked to know how advanced in the language that the user must be in order to solve the puzzles. I suspect that if I am persistent, I will learn a lot of words and concepts that I don't know now!

5 comments about The New York Times Daily Crossword Puzzles (Monday), Volume I (New York Times Daily Crossword Puzzles (Monday)).
  1. Speaking as one who can usually get up to Wednesdays's NY Times puzzle before feeling inept; these Monday 'easy' puzzles would be totally demoralizing to the novice puzzler.

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to fellow crossword enthuasiasts. The clues were stretching without being impossible.

  3. For me, over 50, these puzzles were harder than the daily Wed. NY Times puzzles today. I think it is because these are older puzzles and the contemporary references are from the 60's or so. It was edited by Maleska, who was the puzzles editor before the current Will Shortz. They are challenging though....good luck.

  4. Fine little book of crossword puzzles. The Monday puzzles are now too easy for me. These are just right!

  5. The puzzles in this book were created by Maleska a well-known creator of puzzles who died quite a while ago. They are harder than today's Thursday puzzles. They contain more obscure words and refer to much older movies and events than today's puzzles. I relish today's puzzles on Thursday but for older puzzles Wednesday is more my speed.

2 comments about Easy Spanish Crossword Puzzles (Language - Spanish).
  1. These puzzles are a fantastic learning aid. For the beginning Spanish learner, I highly recommend them. If you are advanced, that is, if you can already understand 80% of the Spanish in Spanish radio programs, then they are too easy for you.

  2. These puzzles are not that easy and they aren't fun to do because not a lot of the words intersect so you don't get hints by filling in the words you do know first. They use odd words that a beginner would not be likely to know such as the word for axle (eje). The definitions are neither imaginative nor intuitive. Many words in the puzzles do not appear in the vocabulary list in the back of the book (e.g. mecadora and columpio).

I enjoy crossword puzzles and I love studying Spanish but I did not enjoy this book. It appears to have been very carelessly put together.

  1. If you like crosswords and television, these puzzles are for you. There are a lot to choose from, with references to old shows as well as to current ones. Something for everyone. The only drawback...it's a larger book that I expected--not really suited for travel.

  2. This is an excellent puzzle book with TV Guide puzzles inside. I like the format....cover folds back so you can work on the puzzle. Great for travel, etc. My daughter liked it so much I didn't see the book for three weeks. Great job.

  1. I received this crossword dictionary last week & I am very disappointed in this book. It doesn't have all the words and it did not help my crossword puzzles at all. The letter are very large which helps my eyes.

  2. This was for a gift for my mother. She is reaching 90 and her sight is failing but she loves to do crossword puzzles. The last dictionary she had was too small and falling apart. The new one is bigger, easier to handle and better print. She loves it. We also use it alot when playing scrabble, another of her favorite activities. When I ordered it, it came quicker than expected and in perfect shape. I have ordered from Amazon befor and will again. Thank you.

  3. This large print crossword dictionary is wonderful for my 85 year old mother. I had not been able to find a satisfactory one at Borders and was grateful to be able to send her this one from Amazon.

  4. Bought this for my wife, but she didn't like it at all! An older dictionary had was more usable, so ordered an updated version of the older crossword dictionary. I was able return it for a full refund-no problem-thanks.

  5. I appreciate the large print, the clarity and the geographical information. However, I must admit I was disappointed as the information is insufficient. I have to use other crossword dictionaries for not so common expressions. It would be good for a beginner or a very senior person.

  1. You will surely enjoy Everything Cryptic. The puzzles start out just easy enough to get you warmed up, and then you find a variety of increasingly challenging cryptics. If you believe that mental exercises keep your mind young and fit, this is a good choice for you.The Everything Cryptic Crosswords Book: 100 Complex and Challenging Puzzles for Word Lovers (Everything: Sports and Hobbies)ou!

  2. Excellent book. I take it with me and do a few clues at a time. The answers at the back really help. It is my first go at crosswords and this book is the perfect solution.

  3. I used this book as a textbook in an adult ed course on cryptic crosswords and was really disappointed. The setter's clues are below par and all too often forced. He uses truly unusual words as answers that one must look up in dictionaries; this is acceptable in British cryptics, but not the norm in American cryptics. Definitely not a book for beginners and not all that satisfying for seasoned solvers.

  4. This is a great confidence builder, especially when you don't peek at the answers. Solving gives a real boost to your self esteem. A good way to build your vocabulary and word usage. I am 76 years old and love cryptic puzzles, particularly the black and white square type.
