5 comments about The New York Times Crossword Puzzle Dictionary (Puzzle Reference).
- This is the second time I have bought this little book. I find it very helpful and relatively easy to read. I would like to see more foreign words and phrases.
- OK! I admit that I have lied in the past about my ability to 'work' the NY Times puzzle. This dictionary put me in the realm of actually being able to 'work' the puzzles. Easy to use, even for a novice like me and has given me a 'plethora' of info.
- The best puzzle dictionary when it comes to States, Countries, and Nations. Easy to read. All State/Country information is highlighted for quick reference. Very inclusive. Recommended for the newer as well as the expert puzzle solver.
- I got 2 of these for my husband and son for their crossword madness...and they both thought this was just 'cheating' and refuse to use them! Oh well!
- This is the one and only dictionary I use for the Sunday NY Times Crossword Puzzle. Highly recommended!!

5 comments about The Million Word Crossword Dictionary.
- I used to have a "best" dictionary ever until this one entered the scene. Now I turn to it first of all, and if it, for some reason, doesn't have what I want I go to the other. This is the best when you are looking for a name or the word missing in a slogan or motto, or need to locate the actors and their roles in movies. It doesn't include them all, but it makes a great attempt at it. For someone who does NYTimes puzzles, it's a necessity.
- My wife said; "Not another dictionary!" and she is now using this Million Word Crossword Dictionary as the first place to look for help
as the previous crossword dictionaries just sit around hoping that someone will look into them at some time. It must be lonely for these
other crossword sources since this new Million Word is so complete and
readily meets the needs of crossword puzzlers. Thanks for a winner!
- My husband loved this book so much, he bought one to take to work, too.
- This is an awesome crossword reference. Rarely will it not help, and at those times probably no dictionary will help. I have one question for other users, is anyone missing the end or T and beginning of U? I bought the book new, and it doesn't seem to be missing pages, it just goes from 1142 to 1175, I used it for weeks before realizing this.
- I bought this for my 87 year old father who is an avid crossword puzzle junkie. His old dictionary was not current enough for the newest slang or movies and actors and awards. Although this was currently published in 2004, he has already found it immensely helpful and was astounded at the list of academy award entries. He uses it daily. Although I found the print to be small and hard for me to read, he has not complained about it, nor does he wear glasses. I bought the hard back so it would last longer. Some people don't like the larger book but my father prefers it. Go figure.

5 comments about The New York Times Ultimate Crossword Omnibus: 1,001 Puzzles from The New York Times.
- I love this book of crosswords and always having some to do when I want. The only thing I don't like about this book is how thick it is. It can be a little difficult to fill in some of the puzzles so close to the middle of the book because it doesn't open flat; however, I solve this problem by tearing out the pages. Overall, I love it.
- I love crossword puzzles! This book is too awkward to use though for two reasons. One is that it's heavy and hard to hold open anywhere except at a table (my favorite spot is the recliner or lawn chair!). The second reason is that the puzzle is on the wrong part of the page. It should be near the binding or even in the middle with the clues surrounding it. Again, it wouldn't be as bad at the table, but that's not where I do them.
The puzzles are great though!!
- They say that if you keep your mind active, you might stave off Alzheimers. With 1001 crosswords, half of which I couldn't complete, there are days when I'd welcome the disease. (I know, I know. Don't lecture.)
I've had the book for over a year. Since I often do the "local" crosswords, it will take some time to get through. Plus the fact that I often do them during baseball games, this could take awhile.
Still, I like the selection, and I especially like the fact that the puzzles aren't specifically tied to New York or current politics. It is a really good mix, and not once was I asked about a Celebes Ox.
That said - and this is strictly a personal thing - I don't care for puzzles that revolved around a quote that takes the three or four largest lines. I've yet to have a "Eureka!" experience with those.
And THAT said, I've bought the Globe's puzzles, Simon and Shuster's (of which I've finished none), and the Post's, and the New York Times is the one I would choose every time. I just bought their latest edition.
So if I only get through 500 of them, and spend hours on the other 500, I've had my fun and still get a kick out of finishing any of them. And for every clue for Iggy Pop I miss, I'm assured of getting a Patty Paige or Teresa Brewer.
Now just what is the siegeofmalakand?
- I got this for my mom who is hardcore for crossword puzzles. For the price, you can't beat it. She was running puzzles off the internet and having a hard time reading them because the print was so small. There is a great variety of puzzles to keep her busy without having to run endless puzzles off of the internet. She also enjoys the variety diffent level of puzzles. I would definetely suggest this book for someone who is looking for variety.
- Well, I was warned about the size of this monster, but did I heed the advice? No. So, I have to razor out the pages and pretend I am doing a much reduced in size puzzle from the paper. I'm glad I bought it because it will last longer than I will. The bad news is that none of my heirs do crosswords. More's the pity.

5 comments about The New York Times Supersized Book of Sunday Crosswords: 500 Puzzles (New York Times Crossword Puzzles).
- For anyone who enjoys the Sunday New York Times Crosswords, this it the ultimate. The size if the book creates a bit of a challenge if you do the crosswords anywhere but a table top - so I simply cut out several pages at a time providing the opportunity to do them anywhere.
With the size of this book, I may just order a second later on and start all over - by that time I will have forgotten the clues and answers.
- This volume collects 500 New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles that were originally published between 1983 and 1998. This span covers the editorships of the late Eugena Maleska and his successor Will Shortz. This book collects about two-thirds of the Sunday crosswords originally published in those 15 years. One puzzle appears on each page and all answers are in the back. I can't determine if the puzzles are presented in chronological order.
Travelers will probably want a smaller book for a plane ride but there are already numerous crossword collections for such purposes. This book is strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys doing puzzles at home, offering a tremendous number of good puzzles for the price. It seems that a solver must be either bedridden or incarcerated to complete all 500 puzzles anytime soon.
- This huge book contains 500 Sunday Times crossword puzzles from the Shortz and Maleska eras, but most of them are from the wittier Shortz group. And think of it: this contains ten years worth of Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles! Ought to take you at least a couple of weeks to finish, right?
The book is well-made, with good quality paper -- much better than the slick glossy Times Sunday magazine paper that doesn't take pencil or ink marks very well -- and for those like me who tear the pages out and then use a clipboard, they tear out easily with no ragged edges.
As for the puzzles, well -- is there anyone, anywhere who makes better big Sunday-style puzzles? I've done puzzles from papers all over the USA and the Times are easily the most fun and most challenging to work.
Consider the price: less than three cents per puzzle. Can't beat that.
Heartily recommended to puzzle fanatics and casual solvers alike.
Scott Morrison
- Not for the average crossworder! Difficult puzzles for the most part and print is very small. Paper quality is good and so was the price but if they are too difficult to solve....more frustration than fun.
- As you age your mind also needs exercising. Crossword Puzzles are an excellent way of doing this. Research has shown that crossword puzzles are instrumental in warding off forgetfullness and even Alzheimers disease. Your mind is actually more important than your body and it can change your attitude to physical problems and overcome them.

5 comments about New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary.
- I looked in my other dictionaries for nostril I couldn't find it. But, in A-Z I found it and the answer to todays NYTimes puzzle.Saturdays is known as the hardest one of the week. One that I need a reference for.My experience is the same as many of the other reviewers ,the binding in the soft bound falls apart very easily. There are too many pages for the binding. There are plasticized covers in other crossword dictionaries . I bought one at the same time as my A-Z book and it hasn't fallen apart. The type face in this book is large enough that I don't need a magnifying glass. In another dictionary that lists noble prize winners you have a hard time reading their names.I like the addition of foreign languages. Usually, I manage to comeup with most of the more common words. But, I don't just use the book for crosswords. In visiting Europe this book comes in handy as a source of vocabulary,in French,German and Spanish. When I travel I buy the NY Herald -Tribune and it has the same puzzle as the NYTimes.
- New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary I purchased this crossword dictionary to replace one that I've utilized for reference for many years. I based my decision on the descriptive attributes of being bigger and better than ever with thousands of updated entries, and containing nearly twice as much information as competing crossword dictionaries. However, I find this crossword dictionary lacking in much of the word definitions and descriptive information that my old crossword dictionary contains. I find that I must still resort to my old crossword dictionary when stumped by crossword clues because the answer could not be found in the A-Z Crossword Dictionary.
- A-Z is by far the best crossword book ever written/compiled!New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary
- The book was very good. The service by the company wass excellent. The price of the book was good.
- This is the BEST Crossword Dictionary by far. Had one that was so dog-earred and torn was literally falling apart. Had purchased a dozen other crossword dictionarys but none measured up to this one. Went on line and found it... EXCELLENT PURCHASE and so excited to have a new one.

5 comments about The Everything Crossword and Puzzle Book; Hours of brain-teasing fun-crossword puzzles, acrostics, hidden words and more, for puzzlers at all levels.
- I you have a loved one doing some unfortunate incaraceration time, this is a great gift. It helps pass the time, promotes humorous conversation with other cellis, and it stimulates the mind. It will last some time and it is an acceptable gift if you order it and have it shipped from Amazon. It will not be concidered contraband unless they decide to wet it and make a sculpture or something. Everyone enjoyed it.
- I actually bought this book for my dad - an older gentleman who needs to keep the ol' brain pleasantly occupied. I coupled it with a (ubiquitous) sudoku set, too. He told me last week that he's been rationing them out so he won't finish the book too soon. Great stuff.
- Not a bad puzzle book really, maybe not as good as some others but Ok nonetheless. However, they skimped on proofing I think, as the easy crossword puzzles are listed as the medium and vice-versa. A little discombobulating!
- this is a great book. you must be an extreme crossword lover. i give it a three because all the puzzles are just too hard for me, not including the find the word. a little unfair rating, but it just wasn't what i expected. i wanted to see at least one suduko puzzle.
- Working these puzzles is a great way to keep mentally fit, and this collection provides varying levels of challenge and types of brain-builders. Enjoy!

5 comments about People Puzzler.
- I was most happy with this book. Just wish I could purchase previous issues. Cannot wait until the next one.
- I subscribe to People mainly for the Puzzler! It's easy but not too easy, and nothing like the "newspaper crossword". My husband and I actually argue every week, "It's my turn!", "No it's my turn, you did it last week!" Now, I get to do a puzzle every day! As one reviewer said, the ink fom the back of one puzzle can transfer to another page, so I just put a piece of paper behind the page of the puzzle I'm working on. I'm glad that the pages are in full color, and not on cheezy newsprint. The star info/bios are fun, but a little dry, it almost seems like they needed page fillers. When does a new one come out?
- This is best crossword puzzle book EVER!!! I recommend it to EVERYONE, and I even say I got it off AMazon.
- Liked the puzzler book but pencil or pen marks go through to the back of the page. I have to put a piece of paper on the other side to keep it from bleeding over.
- I'd say I'm more of a word search gal than a crossword puzzle girl, but I have always enjoyed the Puzzlers in People magazine. I find them to be of a 'medium' difficulty, and often contain items that I recognize easily. The hardest part for me is to avoid the temptation of peeking in the back when I get stuck (my husband has caught me doing this a few times)! I keep this in the drawer of my bedside table to work on a puzzle or two before going to bed.

5 comments about The New York Times Monday Through Friday Easy to Tough Crossword Puzzles (New York Times Crossword Puzzles).
- In the past, most of the NY Times Crossword books were either themed collections or just general collections. There are the Sunday Crossword Books, as well as Will Shortz's Most Difficult Puzzle Books, but this book has a great advantage: You can tell immediately by the day of the week how difficult the puzzle is going to be. Want a quickie? Do a Monday! Want a toughie? Do a Friday. I often like the Wednesday or Thursday puzzles because they have fun gimmicks, but aren't too difficult. This book makes it easy to find them!
- 30 Jan 2007
TGIM - Standing for "Thank God it's Monday" would be an appropriate exclamation every five (5) pages.
I must confess that I have to ask for a little help with a word here or there on Fridays. The rest of the week is manageable.
- Hooray! A crossword book that has easy AND hard puzzles, each clearly labeled, so you can work your way up as you get smarter (sadly, I'm still a Tuesday girl).
If you're tired of Dell/Penny Press crossword books which are full of repeating, unimaginative clues, the NY Times crosswords will definitely bend your brain in a new way.
AND, if you love crosswords, be sure to check out the film Wordplay, featuring Will Shortz!
- For those that don't know: the answers are int he back, six to a page. Some may have trouble with this and feel the desire to glance at the other answers on the page. If you are doing the puzzles in order, you may glance and remember an answer.
The book is spiral bound, so it lays nice and flat, unlike those that are cheap and glue-bound like a magazine.
Printed on newsprint-like paper, which makes it even lighter and packable. This book is much better than those cheap $1 crossword puzzles you find in the store.
- Great brain buster, I don't know how can one finish even an easy NY times crossword without an encyclopedia...as in Wikipedia...

5 comments about Will Shortz Presents The Little Black Book of Sudoku: 400 Puzzles (Will Shortz Presents...).
- This sudoku book is excellent.
The puzzles are large on good quality paper.
Plenty of room for solver to pencil in clues and eliminations.
Hint: cut the spiral's cover off and you can flip pages over while keeping your place in this massive collection.
- When you want to play sudoku you go to Will Shortz. This book is excellent, but maybe a little too much quality went in to making the book itself. It's a sturdy spiral bound book, that will definitely survive your abuse throughout all 400 puzzles. I just passed puzzle 50, so I will be needing another book in about 3 months or so...Will?? What have you got for me?
- I bought this book as a gift for my brother-in-law who enjoys puzzles and has a very long commute. The book was much more beautifully printed and bound than I expected. The added bonus of having the great Will Shortz as editor made it a wonderful gift.
- Transaction was quick and I received the book at the time it was estimated to arrive.
- This is the third time I have bought this exact book, so that should tell you how much I like it. There are 100 puzzles for each level of difficulty for a total of 400 puzzles. Great quality paper, easy-to-use spiral binder.
