1 comments about The Essential Hand & Foot.
- This is an ok guide to the game. The rules are explained in a rather clear way, but informal tone means that there are some minor ambiguities in the text. (For example, does 'at least two natural and three mixed books' mean 'at least two natural and at least three mixed books' or 'at least five books out of which at least two are natural'?) Hand & foot is a game without standardized rules, and the book describes quite a lot of different rule variations.
The strategy section is shorter and shallower than one might assume of a book specialized in a single game. It explains basics, but does little more. Furthermore, the strategy part somewhat concentrates on exploiting other players' mistakes rather than describing good play. Different playing styles are seen to reflect players' personalities rather than being suitable to different situations in the game.
The book contains also anecdotes from the author's play and analyses of playing styles and personalities of the author's regular opponents. I found these rather unnecessary, and I think that the book could have improved if these had been replaced with an in-depth strategy guide.
