4 comments about Plan Before You Play.
  1. This short book has 50 hands that show you how to plan the play of the hand. It is an intermediate level book aimed at people who have finished beginners courses. It is clearly written and easy to follow.

After reading this book, you may want to read Watson's classic, "Play of the Hand" and "Goren On Play and Defense" in that order.

  2. As an intermediate player, I found this book an excellent guide to play of the hand at bridge. It was well-organized and well-written, with a good series of questions repeated and answered on each hand (How many losers? Does it make sense to pull trumps? What is the threat?). Showing only the declarer and dummy hands plus the opening lead made it a very realistic approach to play, and for complex hands the full layout was shown on the next page. The author's tone was straightforward and encouraging, with a bit of humor, and the topics were well chosen -- transportation, pulling trumps, holdup plays, using opponents' bidding, counting, etc. On the whole, a great little book!

  3. In a clear, simple and methodical way, this book teaches you what to think about and how to think so you can make your contract successfully. This is a "must" book for beginner and intermediate players, and a very good reminder and re-enforcer for more advanced players. Excellent book for anyone that wants to improve his/her game.

  4. some of the example hands have, on most of their possible layouts, a side solution and they can be made even by following the plan which is, according to the author notes, the "wrong" one, or vice versa. For instant: on many E-W layouts in hand #3, contrary to author's notes, declarer cannot make his game by winning the opening lead with the ace of spades when the lead is from KJ10x, even if the ace of clubs is in west. In hand #4, contrary again to the author's notes, declarer can make his game after winning the opening lead with the diamond 9, even when the ace of hearts is in east, because most layouts of E-W hands allow endplay. In hand #48 the author advices declarer to duck the second round of clubs. And then: "If LHO wins the club trick, but RHO follows suit, you still are safe...". This is about finding the location of the diamond queen. And then the author shows us a hand which is verifying his advice - RHO holds a doubleton club so he must have only one diamond, and now declarer can direct the finesse against the diamond queen. But... but... what if RHO does not follow the second round? Then declarer still must guess the location of the diamond queen, that is because RHO yet holds a doubleton diamond. In my opinion, since this is a guiding book for beginners and intermediates, the author should have introduced only plans that works either way.

  1. Nothing earth shattering, but its a good book, as are many of Danny Roths books. It covers a number of common errors, but is not simplistic. Intermediate.

  1. can a man be more vain then zia? probably not. is it justified? it is. a book by one of the greatest who ever played the game, and certanly the most interesting character of them. this book has a highly enternainig value, and of course a lot of facinating hands.

  2. Once you read this book you realize that the best part of knowing bridge is that you get to read a book like "Bridge My Way". Flambouyancy is omni present in the book and is as characterstic of the book as it is of the author himself. Zia, one of the best, sure know how to write. The book is filled with his charm and sense of humour. I would recommend this book to all bridge players who are interested in life.

  3. This book is a delightful read. Zia is an addict of Bridge. Not just addicted, but obsessed. His book illustrates the familiar experience that we all can relate to of becoming obsessed with a past time.

Zia plays with flair, table presence, and takes full advantage of the human element contained in Bridge. He shows us just how much is involved when playing Bridge -- much more than just the cards in front of us. Indeed, there is much to be said about the psychology of card play and Zia is the master card psychologist.

  4. You may or may not improve your level of bridge after reading this book, but you will certainly be entertained!! Zia has a natural flair for bridge and writing that comes through very well in this book. His description of the Paki Spade and other conventions are hilarious. This is a window into the life of one of the top professional bridge players. Exciting stuff!

  5. This book is so much fun, if you haven't read it you should. It's full of interesting hands and interesting people, not the least of whom is Zia himself. You may not learn much of direct value to your game, but you'll certainly laugh! "Bridge My Way" is a great reminder that there's a lot more to this game than memorizing bids and percentage plays.

2 comments about A New Approach to Play and Defense: 100 New Problems-In Matched Pairs-To Play Both Ways (Kantar on Bridge , Vol 2).
  1. These problems involve thinking about pitfalls and the bidding, rather than using rare squeezes.

    How suits break
    Losing control
    Overruffs
    Entries
    Visualization

    Good set of problems

  2. Harder than most of his other books on play. The emphasis is on counting and visualization, not some exotic squeeze.

There are 100 hands, 50 declarer and 50 defense. The problems are paired in the sense that each "theme" is presented once as a declarer play problem and then later as a defense hand, with teh hands slightly changed.

Emphasis on counting, reading signals, visualization, and thinking about how the play will unfold. Will pard be endplayed? Is forcing declarer a good idea (maybe he's trying a trump coup).

Excellent book for avnaved players or ambitious Intermedaites
