  1. If, like me, you are a fan of the "Card Play Technique" book by the same author, you will want to work your way through this book to practise what you learnt. If you haven't read that book yet, you are seriously missing out. No one can become a serious bridge player without reading "Card Play Technique" (see my review on the book).
This is written in Victor Mollo's unique style. The hands are not the exotic hands you see in books written to entertain (like "Bridge in the Menagerie", another favorite). Instead the hands are the kind you see everyday at the bridge table. Going through these books has helped me immensely; not only in improving my technique, but also in recognizing which technique to apply to the hand being played. Being able to do this at the table is really what separates the great bidge players from the rest of us!

  1. although what else would you expect from Zia, one of bridge's great personalities? A highly entertaining book full of interesting hands and interesting people.

  2. From back cover:

"Taking you from world championship tournaments to big-money rubber bridge games, this book puts you at the table as thousands of dollars (or a world title) change hands on the turn of a card. In the smoke-filled rooms of London and New York, characters such as Harry the Horse, Moonbeam, Godzilla, and Hannibal the Cannibal play for high stakes. World Championships hang in the balance in Chile, Italy, and Bali. In the jet-set resorts of Europe the top pros play invitational money tournaments with millionaire sponsors. Share the favorite bridge memories of one of the world's best, as Zia Mahmood takes you 'Around the World in 80 Hands.'"

  1. It's a shame Play Bridge with Reese and Play These Hands with Me are out of print because they're classics. Some books give you rules of play, and group hands into topics and chapters. These are different. You pick up a bridge hand with the late, great Terrence Reese, and follow his thoughts and choices through the bidding. When the bidding is over, the opponents lead, dummy comes down and you follow his thinking through the play of the hand as he develops a plan and builds up a picture of the hidden hands card by card. The method is simple but the results are dazzling, entertaining and instructive. Play Bridge with Mike Lawrence and Play a Swiss Team of Four with Mike Lawrence use a similar style - also wonderfully done - but Play Bridge with Reese is probably the best of the four.

  2. This book is an all time classic. Every serious bridge player should read Reese's book.
However, it really surprised me that this new edition has a lot of faults in it. Not just silly typos (for example: printing East instead of West), but rewriting whole sentences that don't make any sense (like the bottom one at page 194).
This is a shame. It seems the publisher was in too much a hurry to publish this book.
The result: an amateuristic edition full of typos that don't
do justice to this classic book.

  2. This is an excellent guide to the styles, manufacturers and street price of cribbage boards. Great photographs. Very helpful in identifying antique boards. Only negative...I wish it had an index!
