1. I bought this book to learn and understand the mechanics that lay behind bridge monevents, especially Howell movement. Namely, tables for Howell movement can be found everywhere on the Net, but how to create a Howell table is not such a trivial job. The book dissapoint me in this, for it explains movement on the level of using ready-to-use cards.
   
   Second big dissapointment is graphical design of the book. Graphics in the book are hand-made, tables are copied in poorely quality. It was understandeable for the first edition, dated in 1967, but second edition, the one from 1993, had to be graphically revised, too.
   
   To resume, if yoe are looking for simple guide to help you to comprehend bridge tournaments, to use ready-to-use tables for movements, you could consider to use this book. On the other side, if you want to understand the movements, you will be dissapinted with this book.

1. I had been playing competitive bridge for about 10 months when I started reading this book. This book was ideal, as it didn't waste any time with the basics (e. g., the opening one-bid) and went straight into intermediate to advanced concepts. The ideas were clearly explained with examples and quizzes. I really enjoyed this book because Bergen promotes a very aggressive bidding style. The only drawback I can think of is that it was written over ten years ago, so it may not be quite as complete as one would hope.



2. I'm not a huge fan of Marty Bergen in general. However, this book is pretty complete in terms of coverage of common conventions that the intermediate+ duplicate player should at least be familiar with, if not using. I don't like all of his recommendations, and of course there is no substitute to discussion with your partner. This book is a good starting place though to improve your biddng.

1. I had a ten hour plane trip and exactly ten intensly concentrated hours to learn bridge. That weekend I fooled three rather seasoned brige players that I knew what I was doing. The cards favored me, finesses worked (for the most part) and I appeared far more knowledgable than my bridge experience permitted. This book presents the necessities of bridge in an understandable style of teaching. The best part is the photos of card hands which let you focus instead of fumbling with a deck of cards. I had such a good time playing bridge for the first time, I have since signed up for further bridge lessons and now look forward to joining a brdge club. I will always keep a copy of this book for reference.

   This one is indeed the best.
   Very thorough about all aspects of signals.
   Lots of good examples.
   Explanations are clear.
   Easy to read.
   Really enjoyed it!!!
