1 comments about A Dictionary of Old Marathi (South Asia Research).
- For Marathi people interested in evolution of their language or linguistic heritage of the bhakti movement of the Deccan, it is a good book. It shows examples of word use (vakyaat upayog) and explanations in English and current Marathi. It has a very good list of Marathi words that have either fallen out of favor in this century, or are used in a very modified form currently. You can read books like Dnyaneshwari / Dasbodh by keeping this book beside you.

4 comments about A Crash Course to Learn the Devanagari Script (For Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit Languages).
- I felt that "A Crash Course to Learn the Devanagari Script (For Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit Languages)" was an excellent book for anyone who has no prior knowledge of Devanagari characters, but would like to pick up this skill rather quickly. The book has easy to follow lessons for learning each of the characters (and their corresponding phonetic sounds) of the Hindi/Marathi/Sanskrit languages, and enables the reader to master the memorization rapidly. Also, you can measure your progress by utilizing the numerous writing exercises in the book. These can help you to gauge your speed of recognition of the characters and your ability to sound out the more difficult combinations of letters.
Overall, this is a good book for beginners, and could be a helpful "pocket guide" for more advanced students learning the Devanagari script.
- I found this booklet presented a simple approach to learning how to read the Devanagari script. Since I can already speak and understand Hindi, I also liked the fact that the book is limited in scope and does not go beyond teaching the script, because that would be unnecessary for me.
- Nevermind the other "script breaker" books out there - this book actually "breaks it down" in a simple and concise manner. I am already able to recognize and breakdown certain characters in the script! I haven't encountered a book, or a teacher who explains the script in this manner. I highly recommend this book!
- I wrote this book for someone totally unfamiliar with the Devanagari Script, used for Hindi, Marathi, and Sanskrit languages. It can enable such person to read and write anything and everything in the Devanagari Script within a matter of a few hours. I observed this while administering the course to students in person. No claims or promises are implied here.
For those who are married into Hindi or Marathi speaking families, or interested in simple acquaintance with those languages (or in Sanskrit), the linguists, and teachers of languages may want to begin by looking at this book. This work has been expanded from 20 pages to 40+ pages, in Sanskrit:: An Appreciation Without Apprehension. Therefore, if your interest is primarily in learning Sanskrit, then buy that book instead, and save some money in long run.

4 comments about Marathi-English/English-Marathi Dictionary & Phrasebook.
- This is a great-looking book, sure to be of use to anyone traveling to Mumbai/Bombay. It's full of useful words and phrases.
- My general rule in judging a phrasebook is that if I can locate just about anything I think I'd probably need to say in less than a minute, the book gets high marks. Communicating in a foreign language is difficult and awkward enough without spending ages clumsily paging through word-lists whenever you want to speak.
This dictionary and phrasebook passes that test, and then some. It's organized intuitively, with an extensive table of contents, and pretty much everything I looked up was exactly where you'd think it would be (a surprisingly rare virtue in a phrasebook). It's extensive without going overboard like the Lonely Planet phrasebooks (which, okay, can be amusing, but do I really need a list of pick-up lines?), and the dictionary's pretty good. There's no side-by-side phonetic pronunciation with each listing (though the listings are romanized), but if you look over the pronunciation guide in the front a little before you depart (which you really ought to do anyway), it's not a problem.
- It's quite easy for me to read and find things in this dictionary and phrasebook. I liked it immediately when I browsed through the book. Oh, the cover is very eye-catching too.
- This is a great phrasebook to use if you are traveling to Mumbai (Bombay)--the Romanization is easy to learn and the dimensions of the book make it easy to slip in one's back pocket. I'd recommend it to anybody visiting India, and consider it a requirement if you're moving to Mumbai.
