- I read this book while desperately scouring my library for anything by Robin McKinley, and was mildly surprised to find that it was a child's picture book. Still, it was as well-written as anything by McKinley, and I would recommend it to anyone to read to their children.
- We read Rowan when we were thinking about having a dog---it was our "dreaming of dog ownership" book. We adopted a Racing Greyhound, and so the issues covered in Rowan are very similar to the initial "fish out of water" feeling that retired Grey's have. The story shows the little girl empathizing with the pup when it's removed from everything it knows. It's also honest about her expectations and how disappointed she may be feeling at first when her puppy is afraid instead of playful. At the end there's no "too-sweet" resolution, but there is a nice beginning... and the little girl is satisfied with that--a start, a promise of the dog Rowan will become in the hint of a wag from the puppy's tail.

- I thoroughly enjoyed this well written history on the whippets both in England and later the U.S. and Canada. the author himself was one of the forerunners of the breed but he does a successful job of not promoting himself or presenting a biased opinion of breeders who competed along side of him. For anyone wanting to learn more about the breed in general or about the founding of the "old" American lines, I do recommend that they purchase "The Complete Whippet".

- I ordered this book 1 month ago. It said it was in stalk and it has yet to ship. I won't order anything from Amazon ever again.
- I bought this book before buying my first whippet and found it hugely helpful when both choosing and later raising my whippet boy. With chapters on puppy care, training and behaviour, and health, it is comprehensive and indispensable.

- "Whippet" by Juliette Cunliffe is a wonderful book. It goes into great detail about history, owning, training, puppies, and care. Very comprehensive. What I love most about it is the visual appeal. It's a hard back, and the photographs within it are gorgeous - all color, with some really stunning Whippets. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Whippets, and enjoys looking at photos of this amazing breed!
- Picked up our Whippet puppy yesterday and this is a great guide for most of the things we need to know to take care of him. Excellent read, great photos.
- You can find the same information online for free. I wouldn't repeat this purchase again.

- i love this book. by reading it, i chose to get a whippet as my next dog. i already have a golden retriever, but she's really my mom's dog and i wanted one of my own to take to new york city when i go to college. as luck would have it, my cousin, raymond, who is one of the top whippet breeders in the country, called me and told me he had two little puppies who needed homes. my mom, my brother, my brother's friend, and i all went to his house one weekend and came home with an eight week old puppy. i named him elton, and he's sitting in my lap right now as a twelve week old adolescent. thank you so much, to the wonderful authors, for helping me choose my next breed of dog!
- I have found this book to be an excellent source for Whippet enthusiasts. It is quite comprehensive, has some stunning photography, and deals with pretty much every facet of owning one of these wonderful animals. It gave me a great deal of insight into Whippets in general. Highly recommend it!
- This book provides in depth knowledge concerning all aspects of whippets: their history, temperment, housing, training techniques, etc. I strongly recommend it as the proud owner of a whippet puppy. The information provided has worked wonders in learing about the whippet breed and managing our little guy.
- After my beloved greyhound passed in Feb 09, my husband surprised me with two whippet puppies just after Easter. I was, to say the least, shocked! I immediately ordered a few books including this one. After inhaling its contents, I immediately felt the similarities of the two breeds. The book helped tremendously in explaining the little "breed" quirks and temperment. Lacking, I thought, was extended information on puppies, potty training this breed and having two at a time - I am sure I am not unique in that many dog owners have two! There is a picture and a caption early in the book that states something to the effect that whippets should not be a surprise gift to anyone. I disagree, although a challenge, they are a delight! This book has definately been a positive resource.
- comprehensive especially now that I have two females and lots of color photos and diagrams. Highly recommend if you are considering the breed as pets as the breed is wonderful, but unique.

5 comments about Narrow Dog to Indian River.
- Following up on Narrow Dog to Carcasonne, this book takes us on a great ride down the Intra-coastal Waterway with great dashes of wit and observations only a Brit could make. A fun read from cover to cover.
- Terry Darlington is given to exaggeration. In fact, it's at the heart of his writing style and the source of the wonderful humor that suffuses Narrow Dog to Indian River. He, his wife Monica and their dog Jim shipped their English narrowboat PHYLLIS MAY to Norfolk, VA, in order to cruise the rivers, sounds and canals of the Intracoastal Waterway . . . probably the only such craft and crew ever to do so. When we called Terry to ask about their adventures along the waterway he suggested, in very few words, that we buy and read his book. Having done so, we suggest that you do the same. As Staffordshire's Crown and Anchor patrons might say while sipping their mother's ruin, "Ere's thi chance fert learn a bit o' Staffy."
Jane and I live aboard our Island Packet 40 VOYAGEUR and, last fall and winter, traveled the East Coast Intracoastal Waterway from Norfolk, VA to Lake Worth, FL on our way to the Bahamas. Previously, in 2005 and again in 2007 we chartered a 60' long and 6'10" wide narrowboat in the UK to cruise the midlands' canal and lock system. So when we read Narrow Dog to Indian River, we knew whereof Terry wrote. When, in 2007, we stopped in Stone for repairs to our narrowboat's heating system, we saw PHYLLIS MAY and when we return this October to the UK to cruise the Four Counties Ring, we hope to meet Terry, Monica and their dog Jim.
- I heard of this book on a PBS review and I just don't see why the reviewer was so excited about it. I am trying to get into it but I read a page and then move to a different book. Maybe it gets better later on and believe me, I am hoping.
- Awesome book about a couple who travel the Intracoastal Waterway with their whippet, Jim, in a canal boat. This book made me really want a whippet. I'm now a huge fan of Jim's and I am desperate to sail the IW. I love all things Southern and it was hilarious to see how we are perceived not only by non-Southerners but by non-Americans. I'm looking forward to reading more about Jim in Darlinton's other book.
- I've read both of Terry Darlington's books, and really enjoyed them. He's a very entertaining writer, and you feel as though you're on the trip along with them. I'll read the next one, whatever it is!

1 comments about Wallace and Gromit: The Whippet Vanishes.
- I'm a big Wallace and Gromit fan, and a Whippet fancier so I thought I'd love this book. Though it was a cute story, I'm afraid the Whippet in the story did not look ANYTHING like a real Whippet, I don't know what they were were thinking of- they could have made some effort to reproduce a realistic Whippet. The Whippet club was listing this book in their "books on Whippets" section- Whippet fanciers who buy this book because they think they are going to see a Whippet are going to be very disappointed. Fun story, so I'll give it 4 stars for being entertaining, but the Whippet looked kind of like a Dachshund with long legs! Awful! I think they could have tried a little harder.
