  1. My husband and I purcahaced this book when we were getting ready to bring home our first Wiemariner. We were looking for guidance on things to expect, how to make the dog feel at home, behaviors of most dogs, training this breed, and other general guidelines to follow. The book targeted itself to all these areas, and in addition, helped us greatly in bringing our new family member home. Riley did an excellent job at describing the breed in general and gave many pointers on supplies, training, health, and what owners need to expect. It is a great book if you are a first time owner and have a lot of questions.

  2. As a soon-to-be puppy parent I enjoyed reading this book, it had a lot of good information about the breed, but it shouldn't be the only one you read if you plan to get a Weim. In addition to other dog books, I would strongly recommend the one called "How to Speak Dog" to anyone who plans to get a dog or already has one.

  3. I am looking to purchase a Weimaraner in the near future, and this book is by far the most informative book I have found yet. I wanted to be sure that I know as much as I can about the proper care for a Weimaraner, and this book is it. From what to do when you first get the puppy, until it becomes an old dog, this book has it. Highly reccommended for anyone looking to buy or learn more about Weimaraners.

  1. Have enjoyed Wegman's photography for 15 years. Loved Man Ray shots, loved Fay Ray shots, have followed Batty, Chundo, and the rest of the pack, including human boy Atlas. I was afraid the puppies calendars were going to be too cute, but they are not. Just sweet and absurd and beautifully strange.

  2. As always, the William Wegman Puppies Calendar is adorable! If you love Weimaraner puppies - this calendar is a must!

  3. I am a huge Weimaraner fan, and so when I saw this I was so excited. The puppies in the calendar are just so cute! The pictures are great, with two pictures per month. William Wegman is an incredible photographer! I have seen other pictures of his, and the ones in this calander are fantastic.

  4. I wish this book had more pages - more written pages as well as more photos. The story about how it all started was great, but it seemed to end prematurely. One can read this book in 5 minutes. And I really wish there were more photos like the ones we associate with william wegman's work (like in calendars, for example) instead of only the few at the end. It seemed like there were just more artsy photos of the dogs and puppies. But still a delightful little book.

  5. Book was received in good condition and it took a little longer than I thought, but not so much so. it was worth the wait.

  1. My two-year-old son enjoys reading this book again and again. Each photo is wonderfully composed and beautiful.

  2. Playful way to teach youngsters their numbers. The photos are enchanting, as is most of Wegman's work, and your children will enjoy coming back again and again to review the rare and beautiful dogs' wacky positions while learning to count.

  1. I HAVE THROUGHLY ENJOYED ALL OF THE CHILDREN"S BOOKS OF WILLIAM WEGMAN. EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE WRITTEN FOR CHILDREN, I PROBABLY ENJOY LOOKING AT THEM TIME AND TIME AGAIN AS MUCH AS ANY CHILD. I HAVE OWNED WEIMARANERS FOR 35 YEARS, SO I KNOW WHAT A UNIQUE BREED THEY CAN BE. IN THE SURPRISE PARTY, WEGMAN AGAIN HAS AN INTERESTING STORY FOR CHILDREN; ALONG WITH HIS WIMSICAL PICTURES OF HIS WEIMARANER FRIENDS. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE.

  2. These books are rated for 4-8 years old. They show dogs in all different human costumes and activities. Story lines are simple enough for a child but clever enough for adults. This particular book has decor themed from the 70s and fun to see. Our child found them a little bit confusing that the dogs were "pretending" but then he is not yet 4. But even he found the visual stimulating pictures interesting. He could look at them for a long time as the picturs are rich details.

  1. This book made me wish learning the a-b-c's were this much fun back in my own childhood. The photos are amazingly original and your kids will truly enjoy coming back to their letter lessons with Wegman's adorable dogs. A very fresh approach to teaching! NOTE: check out Wegman's fairy tales featuring his prize dogs too.

  2. This was one of my son's first favorite books. He would listen to me read it as many times as I was willing, and because of Wegman's non-cutesy approach, that was many times indeed. Although the dog-formed letters aren't as clear as text, they don't need to be - there are many other instances of the letters on each page, and hearing them is as important as seeing them. Overall, a great experience in enjoying reading for parent and child alike.

  3. We originally found this book at the library. We wore it out in the two weeks we had it. The only problem was when the book was put together it was not in order. My kids wanted to check it out again but I was afraid they would think that was the order of the alphabet so I ordered them their own copy. The pictures are great and they will use the phrases from each letter over and over again. It's helped my three year old recognize letters everywhere. We bought a few more Wegman books because we enjoyed this one sooo much!

  4. I wondered if Wegman could surpass himself once again and he sure does. A generous treat for all ages with irresistible examples of how to find the soul of a weimaraner or two.
An ABC changed into very heaven.

  5. This book is adorable. Exactly what I was looking for and at a GREAT price. Thanks

  1. If you're reading this review and have a Weimaraner, we already have something in common-that very special bond with a very special and unique breed of dog that really stands out from the crowd.

My life changed when I got my beautiful and loving dog, Savannah. While I was waiting for her to be old enough to pick up from the breeder, I purchased "Weimaraners: Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding and Health Care", written by Susan Fox. I had a Weimaraner, several years ago, but she was a senior Weimer and at 9 years of age I was pretty sure I wasn't going to change too many of her habits. I took her from a shelter and we share a beautiful and exciting life together until she passed away.

I wanted to do everything right and I found all of the answers to my questions when I read this book. It really IS a "Complete Pet Owner's Manual" and I suggest that all Weimaraner parents purchase this or check it out from your local library.

It's filled with eveything from what to feed them, to how to successfully exercise them, to housing them properly, breeding and much, much more. Susan Fox deserves a great deal of credit for writing a manual that has been a sort of "Weimaraner Bible" for me. And my life with Savannah is going just fantastic. I owe a great deal of credit to the book and to Savannah.

It's a really good read for Weimaraner lovers. You'll relate to so much and there is plenty of information in there for everyone! It's organized well and the index makes sense and will direct you to the precise area you're looking for.

Happy Reading and Happy Raising of your Weimaraner. It's a great experience.

    Thanks..

  2. After owning Weimaraners for several years, I decided to see what was out there that was being said about them. This book is a general good base knowledge of the breed. I think that it does encapsulate the disposition of a Weimaraner. However, it appears to focus on all the hard stuff and none of the satisfaction points from owning a dog of this breed. It is a good book for someone who has already gotten a pup or dog, but if you are looking for knowledge prior to purchase, it might scare you away.

  3. This book tells you everything you nned to know about Weims'. We have owned Weims before but needed a refresher on the puppy training. I found all that was said to be very accurate. The information was complete and easy to apply.

  4. Weimaraners complete pet own manual gives great information on all sorts of topics, from training - bringing puppy home for the first time - origin and housebreaking. I am a Weimaraner "to be" owner and found this book very helpful in making my decsion to bring one of these beautiful dogs in to our family.

  5. This book is a great all-around new dog owner book. For those who have had a dog before, it might be a bit basic. I thought the information specific to Weimaraners was lacking. It was an easy read, though. A great bathroom book. :) I really enjoyed learning about the history of the breed and more details from The Essential Weimaraner.

  1. I have a therapy dog and we visit hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. every weekend. She is highly trained in obedience, but I wanted to do some fun things with her that the residents/patients could enjoy while visiting them. This book was perfect! She's learned so many new tricks and we had so much fun doing it. It was a nice break from obedience training. Everyone we visit is so delighted, lots of aahhs and oohhs. They always ask for her in particular. The book is filled with tricks for all levels of learning from beginner to advanced and includes tips to make the training easier. When my dog enters a room she waves hello and when we finish our visit/tricks she "bows" and before we leave she "says a prayer". The smiles she gets are so worth it!

  2. Our dog can now use the toilet and she remembers to flush every time!! Eat your heart out ceasar!

  3. Love it, everything from sit to get me a beer! And it shows you how to do it step by step, the body language, eye contact all of it. I ordered this one and Victoria Stillwells, It's Me or The Dog book. Together they are awesome!

  4. There is a short section in the beginning of the book with basics of training and some good tips. The remainder of the book presents 101 tricks you could teach your dog. However, the average number of steps it ~3. Actual techniques for molding behavior, capturing behavior, or naming that behavior for a specific trick are not well explained. For example, "Take it" consists of (paraphrased):
    1. Pick a toy the dog likes and hand it to him with a verbal cue.
    2. "Have him hold it only a few seconds" then you take the toy and give a treat and gradually lengthen the time he holds it before rewarding.
    3. Funny applications of thing he can hold.
What's missing is how to get the dog to take the toy in the first place. Perhaps your does, but this will not be the case for all of the tricks. You will likely end up with unreliable compliance. Also, detailed positive training books teach getting the dog to reliably do the behavior before adding a verbal cue.

I highly recommend using this book only for ideas once you already know strong basics of positive training.
My favorite books for this are:
Treats, Play, Love by Patricia Burhnam---wonderful explaination of how positive training works and plenty of examples
The Power of Positive Training---plenty of how-to's, but a bit self-righteous about positive training and insistance on clickers. I use a verbal "clicker", the word "yes", and apply the book's methods.

    Good luck and happy training!

  5. This book is amazing. Definately a steal even at the regular $20 price. And SO worth it. Easy instructions with pictures for every step, tips on everything, and cute little tidbits from Chalcy(the pretty doggy on the front :P). Already my dog is learning to roll over and sit pretty. Theres tricks in here for everybody. I particularly can't wait until my dog is ready to learn how to pick up her toys :p. This book provides a lot of fun, and a lot of info.
I would really reccomend this book to everyone. Every dog owner should have it. (the book ends with the trick "Wave good-bye". How cute is that?? lol)
