- Of all the books I've perused on Rottweilers, this is the most concise and comprehensive. Rhetoric is absent, and it presents a wonderful plethera of pertinent information as well as numerous color photographs. Truly great information about this incredible breed of dog.
- This book was well thought out and very descriptive with what's necessary when owning a Rottweiler. Her methods are strong and intelligent. I've read quite a few books on Rottweilers and this ranks in the top 3 with its information and tips on training. Good luck current and future owners.
- It was more than what i expected, very good quality and lots of pictures and information.
- Do you want to have a puddle or a Rottweiler?
I've bought a few basic books about Rottweiler to teach my dog the basics. I am very happy to say that I have a wonderful puddle, not a Rottweiler! He is a wonderful companion dog (for old ladies), not aggressive, very sociable,...etc. Do not "abuse" your dog, don't kick him, don't make him be scared of you...etc. Really? I wouldn't recommend the "operant conditioning" as described in these books, unless you want a really stupid dog with no balls at all.
Nice DVD by the way... You will really learn a lot... :D

- This book shows the Rottweiler for what it is, a lovable, loyal companion, with such an outgoing courageous temperament. However as the book rightly explains the dog is a lethal weapon in the wrong hands, the book helps novices decide whether they should consider something more sedate than this proud breed. All in all an excellent book for a novice tempted to purchase this powerful, strongwilled breed.
- Excellent book. I expected an "Idiots Guide" to be too elementary but it is a great book for everyone interested in the breed!

- If you are seriously considering making the Rottweiler your next dog, this book contains information on the how the breed started and Muriel gives you a background on bloodlines of todays breed ring competitors. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the breed. Learn from books before contacting a breeder so that you know what to expect. The Rottweiler is a BIG responsibility and you owe it to yourself to learn more about this wonderful dog. You won't be disappointed!
- Ms. Freeman is a true Rottweiler person and helped develop and contribute to the breed. This book is not only details the development of the Rottweiler, but also gives a great wealth of information for raising, breeding and training the breed. I consider this book a MUST READ for anyone looking for an excellent reference on Rottweilers.

- I Like this Book Because it explains in simple Words how to train one of the best Breed ( Rottweiller ). If I have to choose again I Will choose this Book.
- This book was a waste of time, it just talked about basic dog behavior, with simple language. No detail whatsoever on how to train or specific tricks to teach your dog. The book's title should be "Rottweiler Children Stories."

- A great book for anyone who wants to understand more about Rotties but doesn't want to have to look at a dictionary to understand every other word. This book covers their history, their temperment and behaviors, how to care for your Rottie, and how to train your Rottie the simple commands. The training segment is the most informative. It walks you through how to crate train and how to give commands and even provides step by step pictures.

5 comments about The Rottweiler.
- This is a late (for the book's age) review, but I wanted to add my admiration for Rendell's unfailing ability to construct wonderful stories that are even better character studies. Her principal characters are usually way off center, but not perceived as being as dangerous or as bizaare as they really are by the rest of the world. "The Rottweiler" is a very good example of mundane/normal/boring vs. crazy/malevolent. A good read and worthy of Rendell's well-earned reputation as a master writer of good literature, not to mention one of the best mystery writers alive.
- I am not a die-hard mystery reader, although I do like the occasional mystery, and this is my first Ruth Rendell novel. I can't say that it made me want to read more of her work.
The Rottweiler revolves around a small antique store in London. The characters who work in, visit, and hang around the shop are the key to a series of murders in the city. Mistakenly dubbed "the Rottweiler" because a bite mark appeared on his first victim, the murderer garrotes young women and removes trinkets from their bodies as souvenirs. From the intuitive widow who owns the antique store, Inez, to a good-looking laborer with the intelligence of a six-year-old, Will, all of the characters are quirky outsiders in their own way and all have a part to play in the mystery.
The premise of the story is rather standard, but the idea of the characters made it more interesting. Unfortunately, Rendell didn't carry it off. Despite the characters' quirkiness, none of them are sympathetic enough to draw the reader into the story. All of them instead seem more like stereotypes, especially Will, who seems like a shallower version of Tim, the very special, fascinating character created by Colleen McCullough. The narrative itself jumps around between the characters, which, instead of giving the reader a complete picture of the scene and action, makes the story feel a bit plodding. On the subject of the mystery itself, the serial killings, the reader finds out the identity of the killer about halfway through the book and there isn't enough suspense to take the place of that mystery. Instead, the reader is supposed to be drawn into why the killer kills, but I just found myself waiting for the end of the book. Also, mysteries are all about attention to detail and it really bothered me that the writer (and her editor) kept mixing up the trinkets the killer kept. In one scene, the trinkets include a lighter, some earrings, and a keyring. In another, later, scene, the keyring is replaced by a watch, which was planted in the antique shop by the killer earlier in the book (this isn't a spoiler - this information is on the jacket). Since these trinkets were key to the plot, this was an important oversight.
Overall, The Rottweiler was fine. It wasn't awful and it wasn't fantastic. I wanted to find out what happened, but was not surprised, delighted, or shocked when the end came - instead, it was exactly what I expected and I didn't really care what happened to the characters after the action's conclusion. I can't say that this book made me hungry for any more of Rendell's work, despite the predominately positive reviews.
- This book of Ruth Rendell's is less of a mystery since we learn the identity of the killer quite early, and more of a true psychological study. We examine the psychological profile of the killer who is a self-absorbed psychopath, as well as the breakdown of a borderline personality in the character of Will. And we see how the personalities of these two people affect all of the the other people that interact with them. As I read I kept expecting something truly horrible to happen. (as if the murders of five young women wasn't bad enough). I truly felt sorry for Will's aunt Becky as she is drawn into a life that brings her down. She goes from a successful single businesswoman, to one eaten up by guilt and reliant on alcohol to get her through the days. Rendell can portray characters like no one else, and the deep spiral that so many of these characters are on make for compelling reading.
- I shouldn't be surprised because Ms. Rendell herself said that characterization is what interests her the most.
Centralized in the not-so-upmarket Star Antiques or thereabouts is a diverse lot of variably annoying, amusing, droll, pitiful, and lest I forget, criminal characters. They saunter in and out of the narrative as if this was some ensemble sitcom like Cheers. Never mind, because some of them are good for laughs (such as the smooth-talking Freddy Perfect). One of them is the murderer who, by the way, is identified quite early in the story. The remaining 200+ pages are devoted to (a) the killer's introspection (What is wrong with me? Why am I doing this? What repressed memory is triggering all this? Yata, yata, yata.), and (b) further character development for which the plot is sacrificed.
The insistence of book retailers and libraries in categorizing, en masse, Ms. Rendell's books under the Mystery-Suspense genre is shameful. C'mon, The Rottweiler has no mystery; there's no deduction required from the reader especially since a third into the book the killer is identified so why bother, and its suspense is...is...well, there really isn't any and the little it may have is unsatisfactory.
I don't like a benign Rendell; I like a Rendell that terrifies and sends chills up and down my spine. Oh heck, put plainly, I like a Rendell that's Hitchcock on speed. After a few novels that I truly admired (A Sight for Sore Eyes, Face of Trespass, The Brimstone Wedding), I'm quite disappointed with this.
Three stars for character development. One for the plot such as it is.
- Ruth Rendell is one of my favorite British authors. She has the capability to make readers care vividly for seemingly ordinary characters. The Rottweiler is one of my favorites of her books.
In this compelling novel, a serial killer is strangling young women and taking a memento from each victim as a macabre trophy. The little trinkets, (earrings and a locket for instance), begin appearing in an Antiques shop on Star Street in Marylebone, London. Rendell introduces us to the tenets of the shop/apartment building: Inez Ferry, a lonely woman struggling with the loss of her husband and the owner of the shop, Will Cobbitt, one of the most compelling characters Rendell has ever created. He is a mentally challenged man who cares deeply for his aunt Becky, who in turn wrestles with feelings of guilt and annoyance at the burden of caring for her nephew. Another tenet is Jeremy Quick, a successful businessman who is devoted to his mother. Zeinab is a mysterious character who shamelessly uses her feminine wiles to procure rich luxuries.
Although the identity of the killer is revealed fairly early in the book, the reader is still unable to stop reading the story. We, along with the killer, long to know why such horrible deeds are being committed. With the killer, we too travel an arduous journey, drawn by an unnameable force to discover answers. The ending result is a heartwrenching shock. This novel is psychological suspense at its best. Please give it a chance.

- I was given a full-blooded bitch and did not really know alot about Rottweillers except for the preconceived notions of their viciousness. With smaller kids at home I was a little worried. But after reading this book and discovcering what a wonderful breed these dogs are, I am no longer worried and our puppy is doing awesome and I am learning alot every day. The book has great information about the Rottweiller breed and what to expect as well as great advice and techniques for training. Nicely written.
- I never realized prior to now the sheer importance of proper care and training of a Rottweiler until reading this book. This book should be required reading for anyone considering raising a Rottweiler or who currently owns one. I actually felt myself doubting whether I can provide the necessary attention and fortitude that this breed requires. I have always loved this breed and the book precisely specifies why it should be loved and why the task of raising one should not be taken lightly. Every consideration for the Rottweiler is mentioned in this book, from purchasing to care and nutrition, to behavior and training. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone considering purchasing a Rottweiler or if you currently own one.
- I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HAD A DOG BEFORE AND RECENTLY PURCHASED A ROTTIE. THIS BOOK IS SO HELPFUL. THERE ARE ALOT OF THINGS I DID NOT KNOW BUT THIS BOOK EXPLAINS ALOT ABOUT THE BREED. THE ONE THING I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK IS IT ALL ABOUT ONE BREED AND NOT ABOUT THE DOG FAMILY.
- I didn't learn anything more from this book than what I learned from my dog trainer. Don't buy this is if you are looking for something more advanced.
- I will keep this short. Having never been a rott owner this book has taught me alot. Very educational about rottweiler's. The book is detailed in most areas from breeding to late adulthood.
Must buy for first time rott purchase.

5 comments about Rottweilers for Dummies.
- I just got a seven week old Rottweiler puppy and I needed a reference to help me learn about the breed and to learn basic information to teach the dog certain rituals. I found this book and it is a true gem. This book will teach you about the breed, whether or not the dog is right for you, and a plethora of other useful information about the dog. Rottweilers are actually one of the most loving breeds of dog that there is and one part of the book will help people to realize that these dog are great dogs that are good with children and people if they are treated and taught well from the first day that you bring your dog home.
This superlative reference is broken up into is broken up into four parts with numerous chapters that fall under that specific topic. The main things that are discussed in this great book are getting to know Rottweilers, where you find out about the dog and whether or not the dog is right for you; the next part is called searching for a soulmate where you get information on knowing what you are looking for in the dog and how to choose what to get; part three of the book discusses how you can keep your Rottweiler in good health by learning about the dog's basic anatomy, feeding and exercise rituals, and health problems; the final part lists ten reasons to own or not to own a Rottweiler, and training and traveling tips. This is a handy reference because of the multitude of topics that are discussed in this book. I detracted one star from the book because I felt that the training information in the book was not specific and that I didn't get a great deal of information regarding my dog's habits for doing bathroom rituals. I didn't get a lot of information as to how many times a day I should take my dog out and how often my dog should be fed. Because of this I recommend another book in the "Dummies" series on training dogs. As with all "Dummies" books the information that is found here is concise and to the point, written in an easy-to-read manner. I recommend this great reference to anybody that is looking for information on the Rottweiler breed of dogs. These dogs are one of the most loving creatures to walk the planet but this book is very neccesary. If you do not read this book you may be letting your dog do things that may result in long term problems, behavioral or physical. I will be sure to use this book in the future to take care of my Rottweiler. This is a great reference that is worth buying. Happy Reading!
- I must say that I stumbled upon this book ... about a month and a half ago. A thorough examination of the book provided me with an absolutely great read. Unfortunately, It does not cover every aspect of raising the breed in great detail. However, if you are just beginning research on Rottweilers, reading this book will give you a VERY SOLID FOUNDATION to support your future reading. Your understanding of breed characteristics, history, specific training methods, and even terminology will increase by leaps and bounds. For prospective Rottie owners, this book is a "must have!"
Best wishes and happy reading, Will Marple
- I have a small number of dog books, and this is the most fun one to read! Sure, I totally reccomend it to anyone who owns or is interested in getting a rottie. They are great dogs with wonderful personalities if given the proper environment to grow up in. This book helps you to do that for them, so it is a plus for you and your dog. Easy and fun, that is the best way to learn.
- This book is well written and contains more than enough information for beginners and most advanced dog owners. If you are considering getting a Rottweiler and want to know what to expect, get this book. If you already own a Rottweiler, this book has excellent tips and hints on the care and well-being of your dog. Thank you to Richard G. Beauchamp for an excellent book.
- I recommend this book for all rottweiler (and or mix breed) dog owners. The history of the breed will give you a good understanding of the dogs nature. It is quite interesting. The training hints and tips are very helpful. I injoyed reading and following the tips in the margins of the pages. Training will only inhance the dogs loyalty and companionship.

- This book has very brief and to the point chapters. I have owned dogs for over 20 years but this book gave good insight to why particular behaviors occur and how to modify the behavior. This book offers practical training and obediance methods that even beginner dog owners can follow and understand.
- Have had rotties for the last 25 years and this time I wanted to use a different approach in preparing for our new rottweiler female pup. This book has certainly identified areas one should be aware off with regards to puppy-proofing the home as well as getting the pups attention from an early stage onwards. Many Rottweiler specific traits are discussed and I have found to be extremely helpful. This book is easy reading and a terrific resource for any serious Rottweiler owner.
- I am thoroughly impressed and completely satisfied with this book. I bought it based on customer reviews and they were right. It is very good at specifically describing many of the nuances of Rottweilers. Don't let anyone tell you... "all breeds are the same it's just the way you train them." Most rotts have similar tendencies. This book was very helpful in preparing me for each stage.
