- Considered by experts on the Rhodesian Ridgeback as the "Bible of the Breed", this book is a must for all interested in this breed of dog. It includes an interesting dissertation on the origin of the breed, and multiple photographs of many of the early notables in the pedigrees of every dog in the breed today. Originally self-published by the author in 1955, it was reprinted in So. Africa 5 times in hard cover. A new soft-cover edition, enhanced with information about the author, was published in 2006 in the U.S.A.

- I have purchased the Rhodesian Ridgeback calendar made by this company for the last three years. Each day and month is written in four languages. There are sayings by famous and anonymous people at the bottom of the page of each month. Here is one: "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man." by Mark Twain. Also, the dog in the month of May is a beautiful specimen of the breed. I really love the Browntrout calendars.

- I was becoming a first time Ridgeback owner, so I wanted to do as much research on my dog before I got her. I learned a couple of things, but most of the things is common knowledge to any dog owner. If you are looking for something very specialized on ridgies, I would look somewhere else. Besides that, good overall book.

- This book has less than 30 pages of information specific to Ridgebacks, and it is not terribly accurate. The rest of the book is devoted to VERY general information about dogs. If you can read this review, make better use of your time by visiting rrcus.org, the site of the national Rhodesian Ridgeback club.
- I loved it it had a lot of info about RRs. I have a 12 week old RR and it told me how to housebreak her and train. I loved it.
- It had a lot of info. about RRs and helped me train my puppy. I liked it a lot and I loved the Pics.
- I hated this book. I don't even own a Ridgeback yet, and I know more about the breed than is included in this book. This is just a general dog book with a few pages of very basic breed history and breed standard info at the beginning. The pictures are nice, but otherwise it's worthless for someone who really wants to learn about the breed.

5 comments about The Complete Rhodesian Ridgeback (Book of the Breed).
- Ridgebacks are not easy dogs, and this book helps you understand that. Little things like explaining why your Ridgeback will retrieve a ball once or twice, but then get board unlike many popular canines is very helpful. This is a great book to help a person get to know the breed, but if you already have a Ridgeback I hope and pray that there is nothing in here that you don't already know. I have raised, trained, and have shown two Ridgebacks and I love the breed more than many other breeds I have worked with. As always the best place to learn about a dog is talking to a respected breeders, trainers, and handlers, but this book is helpful with understanding the important background of this great breed.
- Very good book if you are geared toward showing your dog. Or if you were really interested in the the lineage of the breed in three countries. For the novice recipient of such an awesome
dog, I found it completely lacking in real world advice, save for one chapter. I guess I should have bought " ridgebacks for dummies" because this book mostly went over my head. The content was well written, though. The Authors know the breed.
- As the owner of two Ridgebacks, I read this book awhile ago. I reread it recently and there are many out of date subjects. It explains that puppies born with Dermoids or Ridgeless should be put to sleep. I bought a puppy to discover that he had 3 large Dermoids. Many vets do this operation now. Dermoids surgery is anywhere from $150-500. What is the matter with a Ridgeless puppy? Nothing. At least find a good home for the puppy. Many people dont mind a ridgeless. Out dated vaccination info. I recommend Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by DR Pitcairn.
- I read this book and spoke with Janet before buying my RR and consider it completely prepared me for ownership. Dog training I learned elsewhere as this is common to all breeds rather than specific to the RR or this book.
The book is written by a very experienced RR breeder in the UK and is a pleasure to read. I recommend it to anyone considering an RR who wants to gain a broad background description of character traits, requirements and history of the breed.
- The authors advocate killing puppies born without a ridge. Why not spend your money elsewhere?

- I own several books about Ridgebacks and this is my favourite. It is an enjoyable and informative read. Many of the photos are stunning.
- An excellent history of the breed world-wide with discussions on temperament, evaluation of the individual animal, the breed Standards, and the direction in which our breed is headed. Profusely illustrated with high-quality pictures depicting Mr. Carlson's choice of the best ridgebacks of the world, the book should be a must-have for anyone serious about the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The book is global in its scope- it does not dwell overly on the ridgebacks of one country- which makes it all the *more* valuable as a tool for education and study.
- Two months ago I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Carlson in person after which I bought two of his books. Knowing RR for over 10 years , I can highly recommend this book to anyone who ownes a RR or who is interrested in getting one. This book talks about origin , breed standard , feeding , training , sports and even has a few anecdotes in it that are really funny and show what life with a RR really is about. The book also talks about the position of the RR in the different countries around the world , including the USA. If however you are interrested in specific breeders and champions of the past years in your own country (like the reader from New England) , you should contact the RRClub in your country , because that is not why this book is written. This book is written for RR fanatics all around the world. Mr. Carlson knows and loves the RR just as much as I do and proves this through this very informative book , which is a pleasure to read.
- What a lovely read ... its filled with history and information of this handsome breed ... includes a summary of how the dogs are fairing in different countries and a list of champions ... all obviously written by someone with great experience and knowledge ... Although it comes with lots of photographs ... its still very much a reading book, educational and informative ... If you already have a Ridgeback, get this for your library, ... if you're getting a Ridgeback, read it to learn more ... if you are just looking for a dog ... read it anyway ... who knows, you might just settle for a Rhodesian Ridgeback ...
- I have owned Ridgebacks for 12 yrs. and I was looking for a good book on the breed. I have looked at several books that are partly about Ridgebacks and a lot about dogs in general. I bought this book based on the reviews and description. I have not been disappointed. This is a very well written book and is exclusively about Ridgebacks.

- This book is very beneficial for any one that owns, wants to own,or simply is fancinated by Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are great dogs, and this book is a great resource for the money.
- This is not intended to be a comprehensive, indepth encyclopedia. BUt as a basic primer on Rhodesian Ridgebacks, it covers all of the key highlights and provides a firm foundation for understanding this wonderful breed.
Intelligently written, well-illustrated, well-organized, easy to navigate, with an index and bibliography.
I highly recommend it.
$8. 95 pp., Good binding and glossy paper.
- Rhodesian Ridgebacks Manual is pretty much right on with the temperment and traits of this breed. Quick read with helpful tips.
- Dont get me wrong, this book is a great read and I certainly recommend it to anyone who buys/owns a RR. The problem with the book is that when it comes to the training area or any specific breed information, the book is very general. This book is best for a new RR dog owner and a must for someone who has not had a puppy before.
- I recently discovered my mut was half rhodesian and decided to study up. I've had labs all my life but knew this breed was different and a bit more finicky so I wanted a book that delved into the personality type of the dog, training tips, behavioral overviews, and maybe had some case studies of what to do and not to do in certain situations. This was not that book. This was dog owning 101. It may as well been about wolves as it addressed the basics of most any dog. In a word, "duh."

- I enjoyed this book to learn the history and concerns of RR's. It is a very good introductory book. The author is professional about the breed. I recommend this book to anyone considering a RR or just getting one.
- not really what I expected from the book. I could have used a few more prior reviews to let me know that I was actually looking for a book with more information on raising puppies and nuances inherit to this breed of dog. Good book for a true overall picture of the breed, but to much other non-essential information tossed in
- The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an extremely intelligent canine full of fun, love, and stubburness. They live to love and be loved back and in return they will be your best friend, and family protector. An excellent family dog as they are very good with children. It takes a special person to raise a Ridgeback as they are very headstrong at times and are not for everyone. The author of this book covers everything you will need to know before you decide if a Ridgeback is for you.
- Learning about the unique characteristics of the Rhodesian was fabulous. It was very insightful for me as a first time dog owner, and in particular a first time Rhodesian Ridgeback owner! General training tips at the end of the book were very useful.
- Everything you want to know about the Rhodesian Ridgeback is in this book. It gives great insight to why the Ridgeback is so loved and adored by their "person".

- I AM THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK!
Jennifer Aftanas took ONE, count them ONE, photo in this book. Deb Hackett and I took 90% of the photos.
This is only the fifth or sixth time I have addressed this issue and I am extremely angry.
Fix it or a lawsuit is coming. Enough said.

- If you are looking to get a RR, I highly recommend this book! It gives you all you need to know about the breed and it also includes some training and health issues in regards to the breed. A friend of mine gave me a book on puppy training and I read it for a week prior to getting our RR puppy. It was a good book, but I felt that it lacked the 'character' training needed for this particular breed. So I ordered this book along with another book (Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)) and read both. I found this book to be great and it answered most of my questions in regards to the RR breed. It covered the history, how to choose the proper RR for you as a puppy, it talked about how to select a RR puppy and it included training as well as health issues.
This book has plenty of pictures and side information which kept me entertained and interested. I leave my book on my coffee table and pick it up once in a while to go over some training tips and I still find it interesting.
This book is well written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns and especially plan to get a Rhodesian Ridgeback!
- 'Funny thing about Rhodesian Ridgeback books. It's hard to tell the reader something he doesn't already know.
That's because this beguiling breed elicits such passion and understanding from its owners that most of us end up so attached to our dogs that we know their behaviors and temperament inside and out. As a result, we read *about* the breed while nodding our heads and commenting 'Yup ....', 'Uh-huh ...' and the like.
Still, author Ann Chamberlain does the telling about as well as anyone could. She obviously knows and loves Ridgebacks. The photos alone--this is, after all, an eminently photogenic dog--are worth almost the price of the book.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are just strong-willed enough that most prospective buyers should be told just one thing: 'Choose an easier breed.' The rest of us get to read Chamberlain's RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK, nodding our heads in unison as we go.
- Good book for nonspecialist. Need to be more specific on breading questions about this dog
- This is a very comprehensive book about rhodesian ridgebacks. This book is very hard to find (haven't seen one yet) in regular pet stores probably because it is not a popular breed; pet stores only stock items that are big sellers.
I loved the history of the breed part of the book; I liked the stories it provided. While the book is specific to ridgebacks and has some specific insights into the breed, the health, caring, and training sections are pretty general to any dog breed.
If you are looking at this book compared to other rhodesian ridgeback specific books, this one is the most comprehensive. The other two books I bought about rhodesian ridgebacks are half the size.
