- If you or someone you know owns a Portuguese Water Dog
this book is a must! This colorful illustrated book isn't just for children. Every one will love the water color illustrations That make the story come to life. these books are imported directly from Portugal. English or Portuguese versions.
- Wonderful children's book that teaches about the standards and behavior of PWD. Fun and educational.
- At the moment, this is my 3-year-old daughter's favorite bed time story. Or maybe she just likes it when I mimick the dog, as if I were shaking all the sand or water off of me. Relaxing, peaceful, and educational. I would even say realistic if the dog hadn't put on its sunglasses, or if its home inside the upside-down boat didn't include a TV.

2 comments about Portuguese Water Dog (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- This is an accurate book, but is a typical PET STORE book with boilerplate sections on training, etc. It is, however, interesting to read a book on PWDs with a European viewpoint. It has some great photos of PWDs, but I wish they were identified with the name of the dog!
This book is really for a person with little experience owning any type of dog. For the new or soon-to-be owner of a PWD puppy, I recommend Vern Foster's book, for those seeking in-depth information on the breed, the classic is The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog (Howell Reference Books) by Kathryn Braund. For those interested in the European viewpoint, get Carla Molinari's book (although it is HARD to find!)
I recommend this book for those wanting general information on raising a puppy as well as information about the PWD. I also recommend it to those people who- like me- want to own EVERYTHING published about the PWD!
- This book is primarily a generic dog info book. Some helpful info but not very PWD specific. It is second rate at best compared to the book written by Kathryn Braund - The New Complete PWD. Buy Braund's book

3 comments about The portuguese water dog: A guide for the new owner.
- A very easy read with lots of usefull information. Laid out in a way to be easily used for reference as future needs arise. The book was more geared to the pet owner than the owner wanting to show or breed but there is a section with references and ideas if that is what you want. Great all around book and reference guide for this breed. Although I beleive most of the hints would be usefull to anyone raising a puppy, whether first dog or a seasoned dog owner.
- This is a great book for the person new to the Portuguese Water Dog breed. Although it has a lot of tips that would be useful for anyone raising a puppy, it also gives insight into the quirks of the PWD- including an apparent sense of humor!
Verne is highly respected in the PWD community. I still treasure the memory of her doing Freestyle Obedience (dancing with your dog) with her PWD, Tugger.
I give a copy of Verne's book to all my puppy people. I recommend that you get a copy, too! It is well-organized, easy to read, and has many helpful tips- plus, it is worth buying just to see Verne's artwork! Her illustrations capture the spirit of the PWD!
- I wouldn't recommed buying this book unless you lack common sense.

1 comments about Portuguese Water Dogs Are the Best! (The Best Dogs Ever).
- Choosing the "perfect" dog for your family can be a daunting task. Everything from the way a dog looks, acts, its size and its activity level needs to be taken into account. When President Obama's family considered getting a dog, it was a very serious process. Perhaps welcoming a dog into the household is not as complicated as foreign policy, but important nonetheless. Hmmmm . . . a dog that is big. That's fine. How about a dog with a lot of energy? Well, the Obama family is energetic. How about a dog that is "playful and curious?" Sounds really good because Sasha and Malia would enjoy that. How about a dog "with lots of smarts and true-blue loyalty?" Senator Ted Kennedy loved this breed and gave them a pup because . . . Portuguese Water Dogs are the BEST!
This gorgeous dog looks a little like an "overgrown fluff ball." They come in an assortment of colors, but Bo, the Obama PWD, is predominantly black with white markings. In this book you will learn about their super swimming ability, how the Obama's chose the name "Bo" for their PWD, you'll learn they are very family oriented, they are in the "working dog" category, their origins, you'll meet a rare peanut-sniffing dog, you'll see a photograph of Senator Kennedy with his two PWDs, you'll learn how much exercise they need, what type of family they do best with, their physical characteristics, what items you'll need to have when you welcome one into your home, the importance of veterinarian care, what to feed them and more!
I loved reading this book about the Portuguese Water dog so much I think I read it at least three times. The way it is set up is very appealing and it is obvious that the book was well researched and accurate. There are a few scattered, informative sidebars throughout the book and it is peppered with lots of "I just gotta have this dog" photographs. The author does stress the need for a proper family fit and this dog may not be for everyone. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. Do you know what Michelle Obama's father's nickname was? If you do, you may know why they named their PWD "Bo!"

5 comments about Bo, America's Commander in Leash.
- I thought the book was going to be a tour of the White House, with the dog as a guide. It wasn't.
- I bought this book for my 5 year old cousin. She really loved it (so did I!). It is a really nice way of explaining life in the White House.
- I read Commander in Leash in the bookstore, today and thought it should be called, "Commander in Indoctrination." Obama is a man, he's a mortal, he's a politician. While he may be the first African American President of the United States, he is glorified in these books as someone of a higher authority.
I find the tactic of using the family dog as a ruse to ensure children are aware of Obama's greatness to not only be offensive, but the subliminal messages to children are inappropriate. I doubt highly this author has written about the great fun of the, "Bush White House." By the way, Obama is a temporary guest in the White House. Last I looked, the White House belongs to the American people. I won't recommend these books to my grandchildren.
- This is a very interesting book about all the White House pets, beginning with the current one, Bo. Kids will love this book!
- This book is a lovely romp with a fun little dog and that's what children enjoy. Let them get cynical a little later in life. For now, just enjoy Bo!

5 comments about Agua, the Mysterious Portuguese Water Dog.
- An engaing and delightful story about the love between a dog and a little girl. The book goes even further to teach a lesson about dealing with challenges and working well with others. The story also emphasizes the importance of keeping strong ties to family. During the entire story, kids will learn a thing or two about the country of Portugal. I throughly enjoyed the book and my ten year old son could not put it down. He's now waiting for the sequel!
- This was a great book about the bond between a little girl and a dog.
- Agua, the Mysterious Portuguese Water Dog is an excellent historical fiction book for students in 3rd thru 5th grade.
Ms. Kelahan has done a wonderful job giving some historical background on the Portuguese Water Dog, as well as weaved an exciting fictional story for children to enjoy. I would use this book in a classroom as part of a classroom library or even as an all class read.
- This is a very cute book about a fantastic dog who is a portuguese water dog. It was very enjoyable espically if you like porties.
- Agua is not only a delightful and miraculous story, it also serves to open young readers' eyes to a corner of the world they might not know, southern Portugal.

5 comments about The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog (Howell reference books).
- This book is an excellent reference book to anyone who wants to learn about the history of the PWD and how to show and breed. I adopted a PWD from a pound and know nothing of the breed before we got Cheech. I am glad this book was there to give my a general backround and some tips, however, I still would like to know more.
- lots of show-dog filler. If you have your PWD as a regular, fun pet & not as a showdog, there are many pages in this book you will just be skimming over.
- If you're someone who wants to show a Portie in the US, this is the book for you, and you'll probably find it an invaluable resource.
If, however, you're like me and are not in the US, and do not have any desire to show, the book is of limited use. Not a complete waste of time, as there are precious few books out there on the breed, but the book seems very targeted, which is a shame.
- Kitty's book is THE reference book on the PWD. It has an in-depth history of the breed, a discussion of the temperament of the average PWD, pedigree information, etc. Although it has some tips on training, that is NOT the purpose of this book. There are plenty of training books out there!
I disagree with the people who say this is just for people who show. I got my copy long before I ever showed a PWD. It is, however, a more in-depth study of the breed. For those who just want tips on how to raise a puppy, I recommend Verne Foster's book. For those who want to understand the breed and the background of their dog, get Kitty's book. I recommend getting both!
There is an earlier version of this book which Kitty wrote with Deyanne Miller (who made the first successful introduction of the PWD to the United States & worked hard to rescue the breed). You do not need that edition unless you want to see photos of some of the early PWDs that are omitted in the revised edition.
- Kathryn Braund is an authority on the Portuguese Water Dog. She answers all your questions in this 2nd book about the PWD and edited the Courier (PWD magazine) for many years. Her love of this breed is obvious and her honesty is refreshing.
