- This calendar has beautiful pictures of Norwich and Norfolk Terriers. It is hard to find things that include this somewhat rare breed.

1 comments about The Norfolk Terrier.
- The late Joan Read (Chidley Norfolk) did a great service to Norfolk owners worldwide. Not only is this the best Norfolk book but it is among the best breed-related books, period. Norfolk owners are fortunate that such a book exists given the rarity of the breed. Edited by Nat LaMar (Reidmar Norfolk) this is a well written, carefully constructed encyclopedia of the Norfolk Terrier. There have been three editions of this book with the first now being scarcer than hen's teeth. The second edition added a bit of updated show results and the third edition is essentially the same as its predecessor except for the cover.
This book is a complete guide to the breed. The first section discusses the breed's origins in the UK and later in the US. Even though the breed is a relatively new one its background is still murky. But somehow Mrs. Read was able to secure copious photographs and drawings of early Norwich (the drop-eared type later to become Norfolk) Terriers and thus deliver a detailed history. This part of the book is timeless and will educate future Norfolk owners for generations to come.
The next part of the book covers more recent history, dovetailing into the predominant breeders circa 1989. Unfortunately contractual entaglements in Mrs. Read's estate prevent any modification of the book's content so this section will not updated in the forseeable future.
The other chapters were written by prominent fanciers. There are chapters on Norfolk behavior, breed idiosyncracies, involvement in non-conformation events, the breed standard, and health issues. The latter is particularly well-written and still relevant. Unfortunately the genetics chapter reflects what was known in 1989 and is of little value today. This is the book's only limitation.
The Norfolk Terrier is a "must-have" book for anyone who owns a Norfolk. It should be required reading for those who wish to judge the breed. Thank you Joan!

4 comments about Norfolk Terrier (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- My daughters and I will be adding a Norfolk Terrier to our family. In anticipation of our new family member, I purchased this very helpful book. Goldfish are the only pets I've ever cared for. So, I am extremely happy with my book because it gives enough informative information without feeling overwhelmed. And, it is extremely well organized.
- Having recently purchased our first Norfolk Terrier, my wife and I have really appreciated this comprehensive owner's guide. It is a great book for both new and experienced owners as well as for anyone thinking about buying one of these adorable little rascals. We have both read it several times and keep it handy for quick reference on raising puppies, training, health issues, etc. My only criticism is that having done a fair amount of research on Norfolks and having met several breeders, I have found a few errors in the book that, although not crucial to the contents, should be corrected in any future editions. For example in the chapter on showing, the owner of "Jimmy Dean" and "Andi" in the photos on pages 140, 141, 142, and 143 should be listed as Laurie Rossi Sherick, not Ann Clayton. Ann is the photographer who took these great shots, and I'm sure Laurie wouldn't mind being recognized as the person who put in all the hard work to train and show these wonderful champions. But even though this Kennel Club Book may need a bit more careful editing, it is fun to read, full of useful information, and highly recommended.
- There are only two, maybe three interesting books about this beautiful breed, Norfolk Terrier. However, in my opinion this one is the best one. This book is an example of very comprehensive owner's guide, where you can find everything what you need to know about your newly purchased little household member. So, you can read general information concerning history, characteristic and breed standard for Norfolk Terrier. Moreover, inside the book you can find very useful information about your puppy and its proper care. There are also very good and concise chapters about training, healthcare and of course showing your "mischievous youngster" :-).
I find only one minus of this book. There is no so much information about Norfolk Terrier stripping using stripping knife or standard, by hand method, but I forgive it because I know that it is very difficult to explain this complicated action in one, short book chapter. It takes owner's skill and experience. I still do not know how to do it correctly :-)
Summarise, I encourage you to buy this well written book. I suppose you will not be disappointed.
- There aren't many commercial books on Norfolk Terriers. Given that, this book is a very attractive, comforting source of information for the first time Norfolk owner. It does fall short however regarding the difficult process (art) of grooming Norfolks and minimizes some of the challenges of Norfolk ownership. These are expensive, high maintenance dogs. They require special diets to insure optimal health and longevity of life. They are extreme escape artists and are notorious for their avid wizardry in rapid digging.
THE NORFOLK TERRIER by Joan Read is a 370 page hardback with over 300 black and white photos and illustrations, available through ANTA (American Norfolk Terrier Association). It's 'a little heavy' for the average pet owner, but if you are serious about knowing as much as you can about Norfolks it is considered the definitive book on the breed.

- There isn't a huge selection of books about Norfolk Terriers, but this book does a great job covering much of what you need to know. The history of the Norfolk terrier was very interesting. This also gives good information on proper grooming.
- This book is pawsome! It covers all you need to know about Norfolk Terrier care, trimming, special needs, sicknesses prone to the breed,as well as some very interesting facts about Norfolk Terrier history as well as to how the breed came about. I feel that this book is wonderful and I rate it 10 paws up! If you love Norfolk Terriers I feel you will enjoy this book as much as I did!
- This book is a complete waste of money. It looks nice and glittering, but in reality it is devoid of information. I had hoped for some specific information on Norfolk terriers, as Im the happy owner of a Norfolk puppy. It is difficult to convey the extend of my disappointment with this book. Its gives me an impression like: get a lot of pictures, make an "change all" in a standardtekst from xx to Norfolk and you have a book on Norfolks. It doesnt even have a race-standard, let alone an explanation of the race-standard. Or specified instruktions on stripping or trimming or..... Besides I find it extremely irritating, that there is a lot of advertizing, disguized as information. Avoid this book if you are serious about your Norfolk. What you can try to do is get hold of the old book on Norfolk by Joan R. Read. It looks a bit oldfacioned, but it is full of information. and it is much, much better.
- Any books in this line are time and money wasters. They are geared for the rank beginner and offer no help to the serious fancier. The only redeeming qualities are the photos, but they do not justify the price of the books.
- Have to agree that this book is of very limited value. Nice photos, minimal meaningful information and much advertising of publisher product... which was very disappointing to see. Agree the old J.Read text is much better...
