  1. This is the best new book on miniature schnauzers that I've seen. It covers history of the breed and desirable vs not-so desirable physical characteristics, and other interesting information, plus, oodles of pictures of modern champions and their lines. I found almost all of the champions in our schnauzers' pedigrees. The book did contain a clinical report on eye ailments, which was oddly out of sync with the rest of the text (it looked like someone was just trying to get their article published). This chapter should have been completely omitted or else presented as a general discussion of the ailments typical of the breed. Aside from this problem, the book should be a visual delight for any schnauzer lover.

  2. THIS BOOK WOULD BE AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE GUIDE FOR THE BREADER OR OTHER INDIVIDUAL INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF THE BREED. I JUST PUT A DEPOSIT ON A SCHNAUSER AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MY DAUGHTERS AND WAS MORE INTERESTED IN AN ENTRY LEVEL GUIDE BOOK TO CARE AND TRAINING, I WOULD NOT RECOMEND IT FOR THE NOVICE.

  3. I have both of Dan Kiedrowski's books, the original and this latest edition. He takes the breed from its origins in Germany to the present day. If you are a breeder, exhibitor or just a schnauzer lover you will be in for a treat. There are photos from the past and the present, so that you can clearly see the changes in the breed. The Miniature Schnauzer is a wonderful breed and this book shows the breed beautifully. If you are interested in a specific breed, schnauzer or other it would be wise to read all you can, and learn all you can so that you will be able to make an informed choice. Dan's book will give you accurate unbiased information regarding schnauzers.

  4. This is the kind of information that people really need to know about a breed. This is the kind of book that is all too hard to find, written by an expert. This is not a book with 10 pages in the front about schnauzers and 200 pages about any kind of dog. This is a real, schnauzer book, completely for the min. Schnauzer lover. Why would anyone put such a good book out of print? What is the matter with these publishers? A book like this is good forever. These basic things never change. Howell book HOuse should be ashamed.

  5. To answer the question of the other poster, this edition has gone out of print as he is working on another one. That should hopefully be coming out soon.
His books are a fabulous history of the breed in the US and around the world.

  1. For [a few dollars] more, you can get the same info in "The Miniature Schnauzer : Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet".

I'm a new Miniature Schnauzer owner and I wanted to get all the info I could about these guys. So, I ordered both the books and read this one first. Then, I picked up the larger "...Owner's Guide..." and was very disappointed, since after a couple of sentences it was "deja vu all over again". When I finally read the fine print inside the jacket I found that this is an abridged version of the larger book. Hence the "Essential...." handle. The two books sound like they have different authors but not really. The "et al" portion is not well defined. In reality, the "et al" are part of the committee that authored the larger book. Oh well, its a small dog isn't it?

Neither of the books go into the kind of detail I was looking for. For example, I wanted to know how to clip this guy, but all it "essentially" says is to take it to your groomer and ask questions...as if they want you around while they're buzzing your little guy or girl.

If I were to do it over, armed with my present wisdom, I'd probably buy the larger book and forget this one, although the larger book doesn't get into any more detail than this one. Maybe, I wouldn't buy either.

  2. This is the best book about Miniature Schnauzers that I have read. A friend gave us a Schnauzer and this book fits him like a glove. It would be a wonderful addition to the family library even if you don't have a Schnauzer. It's really all you need to know.

  3. I picked up this book when I was trying to find out which dog I wanted after narrowing down my choices. This book is pretty general and doesn't go into much detail. I still look at it once in a while, but still, if you're looking for a lot of information about the Mini Schnauzer, you're only going to find general info in here.

  4. I was very pleased with my purchase of this book. It really was entertaining and I was not looking for details on how to clip, etc... that's for professionals or people with that interest. I think anyone looking to get to know this breed should definitely purchase this book. I haven't gotten a puppy yet, but will do so in the new year and this book helped me make that decision. Great read!

  5. I have raised this breed for many years. This book had information in it that I didn't know about the breed. And I consider myself to be knowledgeable of this breed.I've been around this breed since childhood.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a miniature schnauzer and also someone who may just be getting started breeding.

  1. This is a great book to establish everything you should know to understand this very intelligent breed. It also establishes the minimum maintenance that this very special breed deserves.

  1. This is the first book about schnauzers that I've ever read that combines European and American schnauzers in one book. There are lots of pictures of both US champions and European champions. Mr. Gallant also writes very well about temperment. I really recommend this book to every one who considers getting a schnauzer.

  2. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Schnauzers. Mr. Gallant has been a breeder for over 25 years in the Netherlands and currently in South Africa. Excellent information regarding temperament, grooming, training and pedigrees. The section on the Giant Schnauzer is comprehensive and accurate. I recommend this book to all who purchase a Schnauzer.

  3. Gallant combines experience, statistics, and photography to complete a book that gives a wealth of information on the three breeds of Schnauzers. Anyone who wants to truly know about the Schnauzer SHOULD read this book.

  1. I thought it was a very knolageable book to say the least.

  2. Can anyone tell me if this Book by Karla Rugh, is a better book to buy for the miniature schnauzers or "the Essential Miniature Schnauzer" by Ian Dunbar? Which one is the better buy for the buck of the two?

  3. I was looking for just the knowlege for the very breed. However, this book offers nothing about it. I can get the same information online browsing.

  1. This book gives good insight into what you can look forward to when owning a mini of your own. I had my schnauzer for 11 years from when I was 8 to 19. My sweet dog had to be put to sleep because of health problems though. In tribute to him I can say that owning a schnauzer will greatly imrpove the quality of your life. Read this book, learn what to expect, then go out and get a mini of your own and enjoy the never ending love that this dog will bring you.

  1. This is my third book on the Min. Schnauzer. It is simple, adequate, and comprehensive concerning the Min. Schnauzer. The other two books were too in depth and neither was fully comprehensive like this one. This should be the first book and then build on it. Also a must for any dog owner is "How To Talk With Your Dog"(Auth.-David Alderton). Both Simple and very enjoyable reads with plenty of adequate knowledge. Both should be read prior to or immediatly following bringing these intelligent, loving, and precious animals into your live. My Miniature Schnauzer is the most comforting, loving, intelligent, easy to train dog I've ever seen or owned. It is a very warming and fulfilling experience. This is not an outdoor dog. He needs loving care and brushing every day. It is sooo worth it.

  2. While the book is attractive with many nice pictures, the content is somewhat basic and limited. Had hoped for more advanced training procedures and the enclosed CD did not provide much help.

  1. I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

  2. This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.

There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.

  3. Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.

Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.

As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.

I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.

I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.

There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!

The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...

While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
