  1. This book, written by one of the breed's
    earliest and most knowledgeable proponents,
is an excellent source of information for
both the Tibetan Mastiff owner, and those
    considering the breed.

Written with emphasis on the breed's history
in the United States, it does cover some
background of the breed in Nepal and Tibet,
and mentions a few of the notable European
    dogs.

Along with the excellent pictures of early
Tibetan Mastiffs, and prominent show dogs in
the US, are health and care tips - this is
a reference book that anyone with an interest
in the breed should not be without.

  2. This is a terrific book about the Tibetan Mastiff. It provides an all encompassing look at the history of the breed. It covers the show standards, temperment, and common medical problems. It also contains many stories about the breed both in Tibet and outside of the dogs native land. I highly recommend this book to the avid dog lover or to the TM fancier.

  3. I brought this book because I was interested in getting my own TM and I wanted to know as much about them as possible. The history was fascinating, and it has given me an insight into the nature of the TM. I thoroughly enjoyed it, however, I would have enjoyed by colour pictures to show off to friends. But I guess when I have the real thing, that will be a much better way of showing off.

  1. This is a great book for the new owner. Lots of pictures and information.

  2. This book is an Ok source for the Neapolitan Mastiff....looks a bit dated or on the low lit side. Other than that great pictures!!

  3. This is a great resource for a new or experienced dog owner. Well written with great illustrations that show all aspects of the breed!

  1. This may be a good book for someone that knows nothing about the breed and doesn't want to make much of a financial investment to learn some of the basics in order to determine if they want to pursue it further. It appears to me that the first section of the book is the only part directly related to mastiffs. I could be wrong, but after the first section every comment focuses on "your new puppy" and doesn't specify the breed. It tells you general health concerns that a new "parent" should be aware of no matter what breed the puppy is. A much better book (in my opinion)that is in the same price range would be "Mastiffs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual," by Kim Thornton. It's a "Barron's" book. This book at least alerts potential owners of health concerns SPECIFIC to the mastiff breed so that new "parents" know what to watch for.

  2. I think this book gives a great overview of mastiffs and also some more general information. I think if you are looking to get a Mastiff than this would be a quick read to help you decide if you think a Mastiff is for you.

  3. Very disappointing! As a mastiff lover I expected lots of useful information and pictures from this '#1 selling mastiff book'. 50/192 pages contain sort of original information, the rest is just repetition of other older and better books.
I also bought the kennel clubs mastiff book at the same time and that was well worth the money.
This book is not worth the money and I will be freecycling it.

  1. Love the book. Very helpful in understanding our Tibetan Mastiff's behavior. Great book.

  2. There are so very few books about this most rare and magnificent breed written in English. This is perhaps the only one with practical information regarding the care of the Tibetan Mastiff. As a result, the hope would be that indeed, it is a comprehensive owner's guide. Most fortunately, it is.

Nothing was spared to make this manual the equal of the many fine books available on various dog breeds. It begins with a historical background, covers the care of TM puppies, diseases, breed standards, behavior, etc., and it does it admirably well. Additionally, there are a considerable number of excellent photographs contained within its covers. Overall, this is a fine detailed introduction to the Tibetan Mastiff.

Since there really isn't much in the way in way of books written about Tibetan Mastiffs, if you are interested in purchasing such a title, this one by necessity will the one you will have to buy (as it is the only one still in print at a reasonable price). That said, it is a most excellent book that covers all the bases. Highly recommended to TM owners and those interested in this breed.

  1. Another wonderful book by the foremost authority on an ancient & noble breed. Well worth reading to learn everything from the Mastiffs history to raising your own dog today.

  2. Words cannot explain how great this book is. It goes back and tells you about the great Mastiffs of the past, how they were bred, and how modern Mastiffs came to be. The photos alone are a marvel. This is a treasure that never should have been put out of print. It is the kind of book that Mastiff lovers and breeders will be reading forever.

  3. This book explains mainly the lineage of the mastiff. Pretty tedious. Nothing about the temperament of the dog.

  4. Very detailed history of the breed but limited information about breed management. As a new Mastiff owner, I was more interested in chacteristics of the breed (health, training, etc).

  1. As a first-time Mastiff-owned person, I was very happy when I received this book as a gift. From the moment I opened it, I knew that this book would be my Mastiff bible. It is filled with historic facts (did you know that Mastiffs were declawed, by law, in the middle ages! ), amusing stories about Mastiffs (you'll see your own dog in these tales), medical information, top producing dogs and bitches, and tons of pictures... this book has it all. Breeders and owners alike will delight in reading this book over and over again. If you are even considering brining one of these gentle giants into your life, this book is a must-read. Mastiffs are not for everyone, but for those of us who are lucky enough to be owned by a Mastiff, I can assure you that this book will become your other best friend. dee dee Anderson knows her audience well; we all love Mastiffs as much as she does.

  2. If you only plan on buying one book about Mastiffs, this should be it. I own several mastiff books, but I go to this one when I need information. It is as great a refrence book for the first time owner as it is for the experienced breeder. Full of beautiful pictures, charming anecdotes and detailed history, this book is incredibly informative. Other than the dogs themselves this has been my best mastiff purchase. All mastiff owners and those thinking of becoming mastiff owners should own this book.

  3. Knowledgable, well-written, fun, and useful. It's like chatting with a fellow Mastiff-maniac.
If you don't have a Mastiff already, get this book and read the chapter about how they will take over your life. If you aren't up to rearranging your life for your dogs, don't get a Mastiff - but they are worth it!

  4. I found this book a complete waist of time, I found it had too much filler information. I had purchased this book after reading the above reviews, but I was extremely disappointed. I paid full price for this book and understand why the price has dropped. Very good book are: Mastiff by Kim Campbell Thornton and The Mastiff, An Owners guide to a happy healthy Pet by John M. Becknell. With the above two books you will not be disappointed in your selection of either one. Feeding a OEM puppy is very important, and Ms. Andersson "would never presume to tell an owner what to feed their puppy". Well guess what, I purchased this book to find out what to feed by puppy. Good luck

  5. We've been researching breeders in the U.S. (California to Massachusetts), Canada and Australia for 2 years.

Let me tell you ... this book is REQUIRED reading for many of the top breeders.

Seemingly basic information such as "what type of food" is short-term information. DeeDee knows that the list of top quality dog foods changes every year. Food choice can also be a pedigree/line decision and is often in a puppy contract. Such basic information should be assessable from your quality breeder.

  1. This book is particularly useful in Australia, where not much information is available and many people are not familiar with the breed. This book is however, the same book previously released by this author - with a new title!

  2. Book tells you about the standard, Kind of wished it went more into the history of the breed. It does mention it. Also would of liked more old photos to compare with todays Neos. Over all its a good starter book.

  3. This is a great resource to go to when I need to know more about mastiffs.

  4. I would never buy from this seller again. I was told it was in very good used condition. It showed up on time, but with a sticky not attached saying it was missing the first 15 pgs. That to me is not very good condition.

  5. This is a great reference book for Neapolitan Mastiff owners. There's a lot of good information provided in the book.

  1. Mastiff: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series)
This book was very useful and informative. It is also written in a manner that is easy to follow so it was quickly to get through.

  2. A wonderful book about a wonderful breed! This book offers some great insight to caring for, socializing and training your Mastiff and definitely helped me as a first time Mastiff owner!

  3. This book is a great place to start when it comes to the new mastiff owner, but in terms of training you will definitely need another book to give you more detail. The color pictures are great and the information about picking a mastiff puppy is very descriptive and very helpful. Overall - great book.

  4. As a person interested in gettting a mastiff puppy I bought this book to get an idea of what I would be getting into. The author does a great job in expressing her thoughts and views about getting such a large dog and explaining the finacial responsibilities it would take. It teaches the perspective dog owner all the basic knowledge and information needed in making your decisoin to buy a dog of this size. After reading the book I am ready to get a mastiff puppy!

  5. The book is exactly what the title says, "a comprehensive guide to owning and caring for" a Mastiff. As a first time Mastiff owner, I was curious about the breed history, it's physical and health traits, and proper training needs. The information in the book was invaluable as I would have likely caused my dog bone health issues later in life had I not read it. I expect my "gentle giant" to provide me love and companionship for many years to come.

  1. We bought our first Mastiff puppy at 16 weeks old. Upon bringing her home we realized she is not like any puppy we have ever had. This book gives a very comprehensive overview of the breed and characteristics. We were glad to find that wanting to eat rocks is a Mastiff thing (doesn't say why) but atleast we know we are not alone. The info on training is also helpful for this sensitive breed.

  2. This is an okay Mastiff book. It didn't seem to have as much relevant information as other Mastiff books....

  3. Good reference. We have neapolitan mastiffs and this book doesn't really have information specific to different types of mastiffs.

  4. Bought it for my sister for Christmas. She LOVED it. (That's putting it lightly.) She couldn't put it down as soon as she opened it. We kept giving her gifts and she would stop to open them, and then would go back to reading. Often, she would say, "Did you know that...." "Oooo! Listen:....." and so on. She was thrilled at the book and I'm sure is still enjoying it now. She LOVES big dogs and wants a Mastiff for herself...that's why she asked for the book. =) Great gift for dog-lovers!....BIG dog lovers!

  5. As a first time Mastiff owner, this book provided an excellent overview of the breed's history, temperament, and care.
