  1. This book is a great for those who are unfamiliar with the Old English Mastiff breed. Although it offers the reader a wealth of information regarding the history, personality, and general responsibilities that go into owning one, I would have appreciated more elaboration on each topic. Also, I would have liked to have seen more photos, especially ones that show a comparison of dog and owner (to allow the reader to truly comprehend the sizeof the mastiff), as well as photos that include the apricot-colored coat (as opposed to just brindle and fawn).

  2. If you've ever seen this book on the shelf, you've probably also noticed several other breed-specialized 'Owner's Guides' books by this publisher. Although it may seem template-ish, it is that very feature which makes this book a reliable and informative read. It's written by experts who have done the research, and people who have taken an interest in these kinds of dogs.

I chose to purchase this book when I had several inquiries about the Old English mastiff breed (i.e., their history, sizing standards, feeding and grooming needs, ideosynchrasies, and also general care for dogs). Among its highlights is a section that covers the advantages and disadvantages of owning mastiffs. This is a very important feature, particularly if you're looking into the possibilities of large-breed ownership.

Those who already own an Old English mastiff, or who are interested in rare 'mastiff' breeds such the Neopolitan, Dogue de Bordeaux, or Tibetan mastiffs, will not find this book particularly beneficial, and should look elsewhere.

All in all, I consider it a great book for mastiff enthusiasts and potential owners alike, because of its well-taken photographs and up-to-date info on such a majestic breed.

    Happy reading!

  3. I thought this book was extremely informative and accurate. There are not that many books about mastiffs available and I thought this book gave many details, especially about puppy care and what to expect. I would definitely recommend this book.

  4. I found this book extremely informative. I found it helpful in the area of what to fed a mastiff puppy. It was a book our whole family enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. Another book to purchase along with this one, is Mastiff by Kim Campbell Thornton, this book is also very helpful. The book to avoid is Mastiff Aristocratic Guardian by DeeDee Andersson, I found the book had a lot of filler and was not helpful in the feeding area and was a great diappointment.

  1. This may be a good book for someone that knows nothing about the breed and doesn't want to make much of a financial investment to learn some of the basics in order to determine if they want to pursue it further. It appears to me that the first section of the book is the only part directly related to mastiffs. I could be wrong, but after the first section every comment focuses on "your new puppy" and doesn't specify the breed. It tells you general health concerns that a new "parent" should be aware of no matter what breed the puppy is. A much better book (in my opinion)that is in the same price range would be "Mastiffs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual," by Kim Thornton. It's a "Barron's" book. This book at least alerts potential owners of health concerns SPECIFIC to the mastiff breed so that new "parents" know what to watch for.

  1. I just read this book to my ten year-old son and I can't remember a children's book I've enjoyed more. It's heartwarming, historically interesting and full of originality, especially in the portrayal of the main character Brind, the "Dog Boy." I particularly loved the author's use of dry humor in bringing the Middle Ages to life. For instance, one of the main characters, an English knight who is captured during a battle in France by an amiable French lord (they become pals), struggles to figure out if the code of chivalry would allow him to return home when the lord suddenly dies, because the ransom to secure his freedom hasn't yet arrived. There is a thread of subtle wit that works on an adult level, yet the relationship between Brind and Glaive, his canine soulmate, and the orphaned French girl, Aurelie, is an appealing story for children. There are some violent scenes and nasty characters, so the book is probably best for older children (as well as teens). I hope this book catches on -- it's a gem.

  1. There is so little information available on this breed in general, that this "buried treasure" is a welcome addition to any canine library. Written a century ago, the breeder/author set out to compare his own St. Bernards to their ancestral Tibetan Mastiffs. Filled with drawings, photos and historic quotes dating back to the 1700's from trekkers to the Himalayas and Tibet proper, this "Dead Sea Scrolls" discovery of a book is a recent English translation from the authors native German, unveiling some of the mysterious origins of the ancient Tibetan Mastiff. This book provides a blueprint for the breed for contemporary breeders. Too short in length, but I loved it! (Hence, four out of five stars)

  1. Another wonderful book by the foremost authority on an ancient & noble breed. Well worth reading to learn everything from the Mastiffs history to raising your own dog today.

  2. Words cannot explain how great this book is. It goes back and tells you about the great Mastiffs of the past, how they were bred, and how modern Mastiffs came to be. The photos alone are a marvel. This is a treasure that never should have been put out of print. It is the kind of book that Mastiff lovers and breeders will be reading forever.

  1. This book is excellent. Everything I would expect from the author and publisher. The pictures are really high quality and give you a great idea of all stages for the Neapolitan Mastiff. The content is just as good and timely. There are many great tips and ideas for any new owner. Unlike many dog breed books, this one deals exclusively with our breed and uses pictures and illustratations of just the Neo. Great Job Carol!!!

  2. This book is particularly useful in Australia, where not much information is available and many people are not familiar with the breed. This book is however, the same book previously released by this author - with a new title!

  3. Book tells you about the standard, Kind of wished it went more into the history of the breed. It does mention it. Also would of liked more old photos to compare with todays Neos. Over all its a good starter book.

  1. This book has excellent training tips that even work with other breeds, precautions you should take, and adorable pictures! Buy this book!

  2. THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK YOU WILL NEED, IT TELLS HISTORY AND ABOUT TRAINING YOUR DOG. EXCELLENT

  3. Good but a lot of the information was too basic for me. Most of this information is available through good reputable breeders. In fact, some information that my breeder prefers is contradictory to this book.

I guess this is a good book for those who don't have a good breeder or mentor.

If you are looking for a serious book that is extremely popular with the top breeders in the country ... buy the DeeDee Anderson book. This is a true mastiff owners book. Admittedly, it may be too detailed and for those looking for fluff.

  4. We are a kennel and give this book to all our Mastiff new puppy parents. It is a comprehensive book with information needed for new dog owners.

  5. I suspect this is the book available in a pet store; ninety per cent of it could be written for almost any breed of dog. Didn't read carefully, and guess you could say I got superficially skunked. I wouldn't reccommend this book to my dog for chewing, even.

  1. This book is by far the best. it gives thorough information specifically for mastiffs. it has a place for records and gets down to all the particulars about the breed!

  2. This book provides a good overview of all topics related to Mastiffs. A great book for someone interested in the general history, care requirements, and peculiarities of the mastiff breed. The photos are nice, and this is a fun book to pick up and browse through. Lots of quality information can be found within, yet the breadth of information prevents a truly comprehensive approach. Still, a good value overall!

  3. This is a must have for any Mastiff Owner from the beginning owner to the seasoned breeder. It is extremely informative and Inspirational.
We purchased this book as well as another.
"History of The Mastiff"- Gathered From Sculpture, Pottery, Carvings, Paintings and Engravings; Also From Various Authors, With Remarks On Same, This book was "NOT" worth the purchase price.

  4. Informative & easy to read. Gives a detailed history on the breeds origin and characteristics. Great sections on housebreaking, everyday care and health. I loved all the color pictures!

  5. Mastiff: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series)
This book was very useful and informative. It is also written in a manner that is easy to follow so it was quickly to get through.
