- This book provides a wealth of information about Jack Russell Terriers. Through this book you will learn about the dog's history, breeding, training, showing ability and much more! In terms of style, the book is a very easy read. There is no fluff or filler writing; everything is concise and to-the-point. Indeed, this book is a must-have for anyone contemplating on getting this particular breed.
- Excellent Book!!! Anyone considering buying this breed of dog MUST buy this book. Extremely informative, well-written, organized and interesting. There should be a book just like this one written for every breed of dog. And future pet owners should read them. Then there wouldn't be so many dogs abandoned and given up for the ASPCA. This book presents the information a future pet owner can use to decide whether or not this breed will fit into the family.
- My husband and I were recently buying a Jack Russell Terrier when I ran across this book by Don Rainwater. We read it and decided that we are definately getting that dog after all. Not only that but we are going to keep this book on our nightstand for future reference. We are not sure if this was someones way of confirming our purchase! Great read Don!
- This book couldn't have come at a better time. My husband and I were looking to purchase a dog for our 7 year old daughter. My in-laws have a Jack Russell and it is quit active.I wasn't sure whether or not to purchase this type of dog. The book really helped me make up my mind. I recommend this book to anyone looking to buy this type of dog.
- I am a dog lover so I purchase a variety of books pertaining to many breeds. I had not read about the "Jack Russell" breed before so I picked up this book by Don Rainwater; what a great decision!
Mr. Rainwater has included everything you would need to know about Jack Russells. I never realized just how pleasant a pet they can be. They are known to be show dogs but yet are a wonderful pet.
I would suggest this book to anyone interested in owning a Jack Russell, or, like me, anyon curious about the breed. The author did a fine job!

2 comments about Living with a Jack Russell Terrier: Book with Bonus DVD (Living With a Pet Series).
- I enjoyed this book plus the timing of the supplier shipping it out next day air allowed me to know just what our family was getting into the following day when we went out to the breeder's farm to pick out Jillian. What a companion dog! I sat up until 12:30 PM and was able to easily scan the relevant, well written issues any perspective JRT owner should know about. I have owned three other breeds and everything MS. Morningstar shares and teaches in this concise text was on the money. I will, of course, read the later chapeters more thoroughly as Jillie matures and grows from her current 5.3 pounds. I think that this is a great reference text which should be easy to resell back to the supplier or to a used book store if the decision not to purchase a JRT is made. It is an excellent "check out the dog breed" book.
- Very pleased with "Living with a Jack Russell Terrier! This book covers what I needed to know about Jack Russell Terriers without being an overwhelming book. I was pleased to see that it also covered training for Agility and other special areas of interest beyond regular obedience!

- Ms. Brown offers a comprehensive view of life with the average Jack Russell Terrier; she also warns us that there is no such thing as an "average" Jack Russell. The information is presented with humor and genuine admiration for this quirky, sturdy and brazen breed. The text is complimented with stunning color photographs of dogs and puppies in action. Ms. Brown also highlights some of the great foundation dogs and it is always a thrill to find one in your new pup's pedigree. This is a wonderful first book for those considering a JRT, and we veteran owners appreciate a reference book that looks beautiful on the coffee table -- it is a welcome relief from the dead mice our JRTs leave for us under our beds!
- In this book, Catherine Brown gives readers a true account of life with a Jack Russell Terrier. I have done Jack Russell Terrier rescue for several years, and have shared my home with many Jack Russell Terriers and can appreciate every single word she writes about this challenging and fun-loving breed. Her description of their true nature, along with her complete honesty about the breed, is exactly what people considering this unique little dog need to know. Readers will find all qualities of the Jack Russell, good and bad, in this book. I will be sending a copy of this book home with each person that purchases one of our puppies. I highly recommend it to Jack Russell enthusiasts and to anyone even considering sharing their life with these "thugs in white clown suits." It gives an excellent history of the development of this versatile hunting terrier, and provides wonderful insight into it's origins and purpose. A must have for any Jack Russell fan!
- I am a Jack Russell Terrier owner, and I happen to know Catherine Romaine Brown. I've witnessed her devotion to this unique breed. For many years, and currently, she's served on the Board of Directors of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, (JRTCA,) the premier registry of Jack Russells in the United States.
Catherine and her dogs regularly participate in agility, go-to-ground, conformation, and other disciplines at Jack Russell Terrier trials. She is in demand as a judge at sanctioned trials nationwide and internationally. In my opinion, this book is the definitive guide to JRT ownership.

5 comments about Jack Russell Terriers for Dummies.
- This is a great book. The things I read about Jacks,I had no idea about. It fits them to a tee. This is my secound Jack Russel and my daughter has one that chases aliens on the ceiling(shadows).
I would recommend for a new or old Jack Russel owner
- This is a very good book. A lifeline in a troubled sea of dog woes.
- I have previously owned a Collie, Golden Retriever, and a pound mutt - but no dog has been more fun than the Jack Russell we just got. He's 3 months old and this book explained his personality perfectly. It also went over all the neat little tricks required to get them to follow orders and act right! Well written book, easy to read & very useful.
- We have two Jack Russell Terrorizors, and this book helped with the basics. I read it cover to cover a few times, and it had some good hints. It would be best to get this book before you ever get a dog, but I am sure that if you buy this book it is because you are already getting a Jack, not because you went out and bought every book of every type of dog. That is the only downside to this book. It spends way too much time talking about the decision to get a Jack. I guess this is because a lot of people got Jack's thinking they were apartment dogs and realized they had bought a Rambo when they should have bought a Fifi. This book should have said that Jack's are way more resilient than any other dog you can probably get (read: way more stubborn, so you can't always be the Dog Whisperer, you sometimes have to be the Dog Shouter). You will have to be very consistent and strict (I am a softie, so some of the hints were not good for me, because it should say "Get ready to be a Drill Sargent"). Jacks are very smart, tough, territorial (especially if female and with puppies, or male and there is a female in heat nearby, or just in general), (they can be aggressive, my 14 lb jack attached a 150 lb Rottweiler and had kicked his butt before we could get them apart) and you have to be prepared to keep them busy. Also be prepared for them to take forever to be potty trained (up to a year). Mine are now happy, so loving, and I am glad I had this book. We live in a Townhouse, and our dogs are loving it. They do get walked every morning, get busy games to play with and have a two hour play group every day so they get lots of diversion, which they absolutely require.
- Guess it does say "for dummies" but I still thought this book as a little too elementary. Also, tired of hearing what bad qualities JRTs have -- a little too heavy on the negative side, I felt. Frankly, I didn't get a lot out of this book that was useful to me, a first-time JRT owner.

- Very good book. informative. I bought a Jack and the book at the same time and the book saved me a lot of headaches. A must have for the jack russell owner, or anyone thinking about getting a Jack. Thanks
- Great book!
I have read quite a few Jack Russell books and this is very informative and very well written I would recommend this book highly, especially to someone interested in Jack Russells it explains a lot about the breed, showing, feeding, training and just understanding these special dogs. It's a must read!
- The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook is like no other book available for the breed. The emphasis is on providing the most in-depth and up-to-date informaton about subjects vital to caring for and living with a JRT, including behavior problems and training, medicine and hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics, and breeding. Information on fun stuff to do with your terrier, such as training for earthdog competitions or even going hunting, is also included, as are tamer diversions such as agility, racing, and conformation. This is not a book of pedigrees and show-win photos, but a book for people who enjoy the JRT in every facet of its being. Intersperced in the text are lots of color photos of JRTs in action, and tidbits of technical information (Terrier Tech) and facts (Jack Fact). A book for people who want to excel at JRT ownership.

- i bought this book because i would like to get a jack russell terrier and thought id look into it first and this book has lots of infromation and will be helpful
- This is a very helpful book, well organized so it is very easy to find what you are looking for.
Like the book says, Jack Russells aren't for everyone. They are brilliant. That means they can think of much more trouble to get into. They will never bore you. But if you don't like excitement, get a cocker spaniel.
- full of useful advice. no your not the only one with a crazy pup
- My family recently got a Jack Russell Terrier as a pet. Having owned other dogs before, we were in for a suprise when it came to training and behavior. Jack Russell's are very high energy dogs that require either a lot of room to run or people to play with them. This book was very helpful in detailing certain behaviors that my puppy exhibited and how to deal with them. The book goes into details of the breed, explaining the history and attitudes that are commonly displayed. Well worth the price, I have read it twice and it has helped the rearing of my puppy tremendously.
- FANTASTIC price and shipment great. Great company to buy from. Also this is a good bood for jack russell owners

5 comments about We Give Our Hearts to Dogs to Tear: Intimations of their Immortality.
- I read "We Give our Hearts" in one sitting simply because I couldn't put it down. At variance with other "dog" books, this book delves into the man dog connection in a completely new way. Dr. Chase is a philosophy professor and his expertise in this area allows him to investigate our love for our animals in a believable and convincing way, and to answer the question about the soul of a dog. His experiences with his dogs and his love of the land make his ventures ring true. The photographs included portray his life in Montana. His unabashed love for the entities in his life that are meaningful flow beutifully. This book is a real treasure.
- Alston Chase has gone against the popular grain with his fascinating account of life on the edge of the wild in Montana with several generations of real, sometimes difficult Jack Russell terriers. They may be "cute" but they are first and foremost working dogs, with bold hearts and ambitions bigger than their bodies. While he may make you cry, Chase is never cheaply sentimental. In a time when too many people reduce dogs to surrogate children or toys, he reminds us what remarkable creatures real dogs are, and how strong a bond they will make with their human partners.
- For me this precious read is best served with tea, a cozy chair, and a ray of light pouring through a window. I waited each day for just the right moment to pick it up. It is a book to savor.
I understand that Alston Chase is quite the intellectual - the author of several very heady reads. I have to say that in "We Give Our Hearts To Dogs To Tear" I can see the heart of the author, splayed for all the world to see.
This book takes the reader aside from the hustle and bustle of life and drops into the true essence of living. Maybe that shift is seen through a canine friend's field of vision or maybe because of these canine friends Alston Chase has made that shift himself.
"We Give Our Hearts To Dogs To Tear" is reflective of days gone by, of pioneers, and grit, and lasting love.
Thank you for such an endearing read.
- On one level, this is a book about the Chases' retreat to Montana wilderness and their discovery of the treasures around them, including the Jack Russell Terriers they began to acquire. But it runs deeper than that, and explores what dogs are and need to be, and how breeders are ruining them by heeding human criteria, such as form and size, and ignoring the genetic traits that keep a breed viable and healthy.
But this is also a love story, about how the Chases and their Jack Russells (and other pets) deal with each other, and how their differing personalities give and receive differing commitments and differing forms of love. There are passages of great tenderness here, but also passages of speculation: do animals have anything we might call a soul, anything that might transcend death? Might we ever be reunited with our pets beyond the grave?
There is warning here as well: we stand on a precipice. If dogs continue to be bred for purely human criteria such as those imposed by the AKC, and not for those qualities that yield a healthy, athletic animal, the time is not far off when some breeds will be ruined. They will suffer more and more disorders such as deformity, and fewer live births.
This is a love song, and we need to listen to Alston Chase's music.
- This modern-day Pioneer family gave up a secure life as a tenured college Professor of Philosophy to venture West to the sparsely populated state of Montana, complete with primative living conditions and harsh winters. By doing so, they connected with the land, their many dogs and themselves. While reading the book, I obtained a new meaning of my love for our little companions, and why we are so willing to expose ourselves to the sorrow we know we will suffer when their short lives are over. I highly recommend the book!
