5 comments about Italian Greyhound: A Complete and Reliable Handbook (Complete handbook).
- This book has a very beautiful cover with great photos. It is very similar to the other IG book I bought at the same time "Italian Greyhound (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series)by Dino Mazzanti" . And they are almost hard to tell apart. Great if you are new to the breed, it reads quick, I wish it was longer. Out of the 2 I bought, this one seems a bit more practical.
- This is a great book. It's geared a little bit more towards showing your dog, but it has some great information in it for those who have Italian Greyhounds.
- This book is not written with enough detail, to generalized missing a lot of breed specific info that I already knew. I was not happy with my purchase.
- I am very pleased with both the product and the service I received with this purchase.
- I was looking for a breed specific book, this is mainly a book on puppies in general, with a few specifics, and many pictures if ig's.
I was VERY disapointed that there was no mention at all of rescue dogs, and the author recomended a puppy over adults because you can train them how you want them. It was very pro breeder overall. The main reason there are so many wonderful dogs in rescue , is that breeders pop out many pups to make money, but never educate people on the specific needs of these dogs.
If you are looking for an ig book, go elsewhere. If you want a book on how to train your puppy to sit and stay, and look at some cute pictures of iggy's , then , maybe you'll like it.

- The photographs in this book, unquestionably helped me look into the heart and soul of this beautiful animal. They present all the wisdom, beauty, mischieviousness and the sometimes downright goofyness of this ancient and magnificant breed of dog. I know that I'm doing a great injustice to the breed, by calling a Greyhound a dog. (Forgive me!) As a first time Greyhound owner, I now know that the Greyhound is so much more than a mere "dog." I also know that in the not too distant future, there will be at least one more Greyhound in my life!
- Wonderful!! The photographs are amazing and the text is wonderful to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who shares their life with a dog, especially a long-legged super model that is the greyhound!
- The book is a lovely "coffee table" type book filled with great pictures of greyhound dogs. Unfortunately, I was looking for information for a college paper my daughter was doing on this breed of dog, so this was of no help at all. In the end she gave it to a woman active in the greyhound adoption field. It would have been helpful if the brief annotation for the book had mentioned that it is a pictorial study -- and I would have purchased a different book.
- Beautiful photographs that capture the essence of the greyhound. I am amazed that she was able to photograph them so well. Because of their anatomy, their facial expressions can look a bit odd. These photos show greyhounds at their best.
- Always thought my baby was the most photogenic greyhound on the planet. At last I concede it's the photographer, not just the subject! Barbara Karant has truly captured their quiet attentiveness with a loving eye. The group shots are bouquets of long stemmed roses and the tight closeup shots reveal clues to their majesty. Thanks Barbara for sharing your loving relationship with this most marvelous gift from the racetrack.

- I'm so surprised nobody has reviewed this wonderful book yet! I guess it's up to me.
First, this book is easy to read and comprehend, which is good because there is lots of useful information to remember. There is nothing in this book that is not covered. It even has a section about the tick diseases greyhounds can have because at the tracks, the dogs are not given any sort of flea/tick control.
This book does not take sides in the greyhound racing debate. Instead it gives truthful, unbiased information all about greyhounds! If you are seriously interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, this is the book for you. It has lots of gorgeous photographs and short, fun stories about adopted greyhounds. It is very well organized and it is easy to find what you are looking for.
I really like Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan also, but if I had to pick between the two I would pick this one simply because the information is just as good plus you get color photographs and shiny pages. Whee! Also, it is a hardcover book and in my opinion that is a plus.
This book is perfect and lovely. I highly recommend it to any greyhound fan!
- This book is inexpensive and includes some good advice on Greyhound care and temperament. However, the photos in the book are mostly of obvious AKC show Greyhounds, and not NGA dogs. I found this to be somewhat annoying. However, that's not that big of a deal. What really annoyed me was the books obvious anti-racing stance. The implied message was that racing Greyhounds are mistreated, when the fact is, most are not at all.
- Very informitive & a must have if you are thinking of getting a Greyhound dog.

3 comments about Go The Greyhound Way: The Romance of the Road.
- I've always had a soft spot for Greyhound ever since the mid-sixties when I made a seventy-eight hour trip from San Francisco to New York in the same seat on the same Scenicruiser. Well, I left the driving to them and saw America close-up...and it was great! Since then I've acquired several books about the hound and Gabrick's book is probably better than most because it covers the whole history of the company in words and illustrations.
The format of the book makes it really an extended series of very long captions linked together. Virtually ever page has a picture which is keyed into the text in a rather inelegant style: (fig.23) for example and set in bold type, so all the pictures have Fig. and the number plus also a few words. If it had to be done this way the abbreviated Figure to Fig, in the text could have been dropped without any loss of comprehension, just use a bold number for image and text.
Gabrick covers the Greyhound story with heavy use of cuttings from city papers (who basically reprinted company PR material) plus trade and business magazines. He also digs up some fascinating details: in 1947 Greyhound established a resort on the Florida Keys or a picture of the sheet music to `Love on a Greyhound bus' from the movie `No leave, no love' (it was also a hit for the Campus Kids in 1946).
I thought the strength of the book and what would most likely appeal to readers are the illustrations, it's a virtual treasure trove of ads, photos and other graphics, some of these, especially the various designer bus renderings, must be quite rare. It is here though that the book shows its weakness because all this wonderful material is handled in a rather amateurish way. As is so typical of books from the transport press images are repeated just because the editors gave the designer four copies of the same photo (for example) and instead of using the best one they all get used. Two columns per page provides a very unflexible format as well. On pages 124, 125 and 127 there are three separate shots of the same 1949 Scenicruiser all half-page across photos, one really big would have done. Page 39 has two, virtually the same, shots of the back of a Mack Greyhound from the twenties. There are plenty of Silversides in photos but so many are really too small to be useful. Pages 53 and 78 have fascinating cutaways of buses with arrows and captions and amazingly they are thrown away at one column width. Page 123 has a Post House menu which is small and totally unreadable.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing though are the ads. There are eighty-six of these wonderful company puffs from consumer magazines of the time, full of color bus illustrations, travel photos, maps and the over-the-top copy (which is frequently repeated by the author) but they are totally wasted because of small reproduction, except for six, so none of the copy can be read and this also applies to an interesting brochure from the thirties with thirteen unreadable pages reproduced on pages 32,33 and 34. It's as if this material was just used to fill holes on the page! Actually I would have bought a book just of these ads and the other Greyhound graphics if they were shown in a readable size.
There eight spreads with a visual history of Greyhound Terminals and depots and Iconographix have a rather good book just of these buildings: Greyhound in Postcards: Buses, Depots, and Post Houses. Well worth searching out if you're interested in architect Bill Arrasmith's wonderful streamline terminals.
If only the picture selection had been more rigorous so that the great ads, rare photos and graphics could have been displayed in a creative way this book would have been fascinating (and an index would have useful, too). Unfortunately it comes across to me as another bland title from the transport press.

- There are many great pictures in this book but people looking for bus and bus opertations history may be disappointed. The narrative is very heavy on advertising strategies and advertising history. On balance, however, a good read for "bus-nuts".
- I gave this book to a Greyhound driver and he was more than pleased, but you needn't be a driver to enjoy this book.

5 comments about Italian Greyhound (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- In Australia there are few Italian Greyhounds so information was scant when I was quite decided on having one of these glorious dogs for myself. Of two books on the subject I found, this one was the source of answers to nearly all of my questions. The only few unanswered ones were those that no-one could have imagined, being solely related to the particular very individual surprises my new little chap occasionally threw at me - but we managed to work them out between us.
- First, why did I read this book? Do I have an Italian Greyhound (aka IG or Iggys)? No. I am considering the breed in the future. I'm also writing a novel where one of the characters has an Iggy and does dog shows on the side.
This book is a very useful book on the subject of Italian Greyhounds. Objectively, I cannot find a problem with this book. Subjectively (or in my opinion which may not be yours), it did not sell me on the breed as other breed books I've read on other breeds (and the problem here may not be that the author, Dino Mazzanti, failed, but that the breed may not be right for me). Also, I found it to be the one most resembling a text book; the others were somewhat more fun to read.
Still, if you own or consider owning an Iggy, this is a very good book for you to have in your library. It has helped me know the breed a little better, which was my reason for reading it.
Jeff Reynolds
- This book is ok, but is largely based on the author's experiences. Also, some of his "facts" are incorrect (an Italian Greyhound can run 25 mph, not 40) and his methods are inconsistent. Its a good introduction to the breed but I would recomend the Lillian Barber book.
- I love the books that i have gotten they are helpful and everything is good
- A very very useful book for any IG owner or anyone thinking of getting an IG.

- This book is a very easy read, and had the basic information that I was looking for.
One thing I was in search of that I had not found was a checklist of what to have when the greyhound comes home, and GREYHOUNDS provided that. It also has basic nutrition, basic health care, and well-written. Good for anyone "just" interested.
- Excellent book. You can always learn something new about this fabulous breed of dog. Read it cover-to-cover
- I own this book and it was a big help educating me prior to adopting our greyhounds. If you are a greyhound enthusiast, this book is for you.
- very informative and great pictures, but some of the advice seems a little outdated.
- Very informitive & a must have if you are thinking of getting a Greyhound dog.

- This is a good reference book for anyone thinking about adopting one of the gentle giants. It gives a good look into life before they become available to be adopted. I wished the book had talked about brood mamas, because there are lots of those available for adoption, as well.
- I plan to adopt a greyhound and this book will be a help to me.
- I have been very active in the rescue & adoption of racing Greyhounds for over 15 years. This book is by far the best / most acurate information of all the books written about the adoption of retired racing Greyhouns. It is a must if you are adopting or own one of these incredible dogs.
- Great book. Easy to read, informative. What you need to know to make a long-lasting decision from someone who is living it. Lots of sources.
- Very informitive & a must have if you are thinking of getting a Greyhound dog.

- This book is laugh out loud funny. It breaks all the novel writing rules doesn't suffer for a minute from being a polished, workshopped perfect literary product, but is mad, clever, extraordinary and flawed. But who cares about any of that, read it if you like to laugh and you think you'll enjoy a dry Australian wit blended with East European cynicism. Steve if you never write another line don't worry, you've made your mark.
- I can only surmise that politics was at play when Steve Toltz's first novel was picked for the short list of for the Man Booker Prize. Pressure must have been applied to nominate an Australian to counteract the great recent addition of English writers from South Asia as prize winners as well as past winners from South Africa and Canada. Surely there is an Australian out there wh can write prose worthy of this prestigious award, but rest assured, that person is not Steve Toltz.
- Yes, the author has a way with words and yes, I found myself chuckling here and there but overall I have to give this book a big thumbs down.
I felt like a gold miner who spent 20 years toiling in the mines and who had stumbled on a few fine nuggets of gold during that time but nothing near enough to make wading through the muck of negativity worth it. The book is long, chocked full of cynicism (mankind sucks and we're all idiots, how original), and features characters with so few redeeming qualities that even though I wanted to like them, I couldn't. If the author, or an editor, had downsized this tomb by about 200 or more pages, it might have been a reasonable read but as it is, I felt like I had been released from prison by the time I finally read that last page. I only persevered because it was a book group selection. I say skip it.
- An interesting read but it seemed to be even longer than its 600+ pages. Dragged abit at times, it did Mate! But, I enjoyed it enought to buy a second copy as a gift for my daughter. Go figure.
- I wise wrtiing teacher once said to me, "We're seldom as clever as we think we are."
Steve Toltz has imagined interesting people in interesting places doing marginally interesting things. Like Dave Eggers he's a little too in love with the sound of his own typing fingers. Missing from 90% of the story is the pursuit of some appreciable goal. The chareacters careen through life and react to events or the consequences of their limited actions. When the story energy ebbs new tangents are introduced to try and prop it up--usually a sign of insufficiently motivated main characters, and I'd have to say that's true here.
There's enough good about the book to keep you engaged and moving through it. It isn't until the home stretch, though, that you wonder why you've given it so much time.

- In preparation to adopt a retired racer, I read this because of a requirement of the local greyhound adoption rescue. As it turns out, this book really is fantastic not just for greyhounds but for all dog breeds. Chock full of training tips and behavior recognition, I already knew some of the material since I already own a dog. However, I found most of it to be new and incredibly helpful. This particular Dummies book will retain a permanent position on my bookshelf.
- My wife and I have had the pleasue of adopting and fostering retired racers for the past 15 years. This book provides great information for new adopters and is a valuable reference for old hands. It's written in an easy to read and understand manner covering from thinking about adoption to saying goodbye to a faithful friend.
- This is a really great book for new or future greyhound owners. My only complaint is that it doesn't say much about what to expect when you get your greyhound. Our's was timid, not playful, reserved, scared of men, not affectionate, etc at first and we thought something was wrong. However, it just takes time for greyhounds to come out of their shell and we just needed patience. I wish the book would have commented more on that. Otherwise, it's a great book. Everything you need to know is in there and we still use it when we have questions.
- I have 2 wonderful and loving rescued Greys and this book helped me figure a few things out early on. I would suggest it before you adopt a grey to understand what their breed is about. This book is highly recommended. Thank you. Great Transaction too. Quick shipping and a great price.
- Lots of things in this book made me smile, which made me want a greyhound more. But also prepared me for what was to come. So over all a VERY Good book for Info. Will recommend to anyone looking into adobting a retired racer.
