- this book had good pictures and a basic overview of the breed but if you're looking for something informative this isn't the book for you.

- This now hard to find and out of print book is certainly a must have for any true Great Dane fan. Plenty of intense historical information, photos, and much more. Good luck finding it, it's well worth it!
- I own an autographed first edition of this book. At the time it was written I managed Nancy-Carroll Draper's Great Dane kennel known as Danelagh. If you are truly interested in the history of this breed, this is one of the best. Nancy-Carroll was also an International judge of Great Danes. She traveled around the world when I worked for her to judge dog shows. Definitely knows what and of whom she speaks. There is an error on the cover of the book in the author's name. Her name is Nancy-Carroll Draper, NOT Nancy Carroll-Draper. But that was an error made by her publisher or editor. Just a little trivia for you Great Dane fans. And yes, working for her was a fabulous opportunity that I still think about.

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Great Danes (New Owner's Guide To...).
- I have been considering a Great Dane for a while now and want to read up before making that huge leap. Jill Swedlow's name was on 3 out of the 5 Great Dane books I found.
The part written by her about the breed is wonderful. It is clear she loves the breed but also points out why Danes are not the breed for everyone. She knows her stuff and conveys it in a manner that is friendly and compelling. The main problem was that almost half the book is a generic dog guide. It relates to training and other issues, but it does *not* specifically address the problems with a dog that is as big as you are. I hope Swedlow writes a comprehensive Dane book. I would buy it in a second.
- Very well written book, easy to understand and you could tell written by someone with years of experience with this breed of dog. Examples of behavior set forth in this book I could easily see in my dogs. Great Help from Great Book.
- I am a wannabe Dane owner and have just been researching before I purchase - this book has a lot of good information for individuals in my position.
- Jill Swedlow has written an excellent and informative book for the first-time Great Dane owner. Not only does it explain in great detail the responsiblities of the owner, but also tries to discourage those who may not be prepared for the demands of this "Gentle Giant." If you are purchasing a Great Dane for the first time, or just need a "refresher" on the care of your "best friend," this is the book for you. I always have my copy handy. I truly enjoyed it.
- My wife wants Great Danes and this book was a great place to get insight, and if she could handle these big, but gentle dogs. The book even as small as it is has every aspect of the Danes good and bad. Instead of one my wife now wants three! That's how informative this book is.

- This book has some basic and very general knowledge. I was a bit dissappointed, and had hoped it would give me a more complete picture of the Great Dane breed
- Basic history and breed info is OK, but a disappointing proportion of the book covers general dog information (i.e. training) instead of looking at the specific issues faced when teaching a great dane. I already own general dog books thus I was looking for a manual which covered more dane-centric issues.

5 comments about Guide to Owning a Great Dane: Puppy Care, Health, Feeding, Training, Showing, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series).
- This book was quite informative and easy to read. It would be particularly beneficial to someone thinking about purchasing a Dane. It gives a lot of information without being difficult to read or going into more detail than is necessary for a novice Dane owner.
- Great! An informative and interesting read for the average prerson who is looking into the breed. The high gloss pages and many photos in the book were beautiful. It is a high quality book for the price. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in the great dane.
- The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.
- Great Dane
My stepson just bought a Great Dane puppy and this book makes an excellent guide to a first time Great Dame owners. It has everything you need to be a knowledgeable Great Dane owner.
Highly recommended for Great Dane owners or someone just thinking about buying this breed.

- Although the pictures are great, there is actually very little useful information contained w/i this book. It was too basic for me and was a let down.

5 comments about Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library).
- This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!
- This was a very informative and helpful book. The Author provides keen insight into the care, responsibilities and phsyche of the Apollo of dogs.
- I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.
- BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.
The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone. Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.
- I bought this book because I was considering getting a Great Dane. I wanted to study up on the breed before committing to having one. It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.

- I like this book to loan people who are considering getting a dane, as well as keeping a copy for myself. I think it explains how wonderful they truly are, but also explains the responsibilities of owning this breed. In many ways, they're more like an exotic pet and do have special care requirements, which he explains. He tells of the ups and the downs and makes you realize that your life won't be the same and you must be sure that this is what you want. Of the two people I've loaned my spare copy to, one got a dane and adored it & another decided against it. And I have another person who wants to borrow it, as they're considering a dane. Very helpful to a new or prospective dane owner. Also has many beautiful, naturally-taken dane pictures throughout.
- I purchased a great dane and really was looking for something breed specific to find information to help me to care for my dane correctly. It answered my questions very well and in easy to read and understand language. A must for any first-time dane owner. Many beautiful Dane pictures. And very economically priced.
- Service is great and the book arrived in new condition. Its a great resource for people willing to have a great dane puppy.
- From the first sentence of the boook, there is a recurring theme that "Giant Dogs bring Giant Responsibilities." While this is certainly good advice, it was repeated so often throughout the book that I got the impression that the author was trying to discourage readers from getting a Great Dane. He spent a lot of time discussing health issues (always the problems the dog can get)but little time discussing what to do about them. AFter reading the book, it is enough to make a prospective owner consider opting for another breed. If you read the book, balance it with information from another Great Dane book, as this one is biased against new owners.
- This was an ok Dane book. I bought Great Dane: Model of Nobility and that is the best book for anyone wanting to know about Great Danes. It gives all the info you could ever want. It is out of print, but you can get it from a marketplace vendor or you can go to the author's dane website. Just google Jill Swedlow and you will find it. She has where you can print it out for free off of her site.

3 comments about The Invisible Dog.
- This book is about a girl named Janie who finds a collar that belonged to her Great Dane, Rupert, who died when she was younger.
She carries it with her down the street. Mrs. Garrow, one of her neighbors, sees her and makes believe that she is petting a dog and gives Janie compliments on it. So Janie names her invisible harlequin Great Dane, Henry. She takes him everywhere she goes except school. When her birthday comes her parents surprise her and take her to a dog show. She hopes the Harlequin Great Dane will win. Read the book to find out who wins the show, what Mrs. Garrow finds in the teacup and how Janie's dream of owning a Great Dane comes true. If you enjoy books that you can't put down, you'll love this one. I really love books about dogs so that is why I would recommend it to others who love dog stories.
- I am always looking for "animal" stories to interest my daughter. This author has written many stories that keep her interest and The Invisible Dog is no exception. The story is simple, a girl wants a dog, her parents are reluctant. The girl finds an old collar and leash and imagines her pet. Through a series of remarkable coincidences, her dream comes true at the end of the story.
- The author of the junior novel which the film Babe was based on has written a great tale about a dog named Henry. The Invisible Dog is a quick and simple read that both children and adults will enjoy. There are also a few illustrations inside as well.
Henry is a Great Dane and only a little girl named Janie and an old lady at the end of the street can see him. To everyone else Henry is invisible at a disturbing at times imagination of Janie who just seems to be carrying the family's dead dog's collar around the place. Janie knows Henry is real, she feeds it invisible food and cleans up its invisible waste and her father has told if she can raise $500 they'll get a dog everyone can see. Janie is very specific though, she knows the colour and everything that the dog they will get will be, because she's been walking it everyday for a long time now.

3 comments about Great Dane: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- This is the best Great Dane book that I have read and I've read four recently. We are planning on breeding and possibly showing Great Danes and I have been reading everything I can get my hands on. Not only is this book easy to read, but also the most comprehensive. I also feel that it is the most balanced. Some books are written by dog fanatics and are a little extreme. This book seemed to be very centered with an understanding of reality. It gives good information on conformation (much more than the other books), breeding, training a dog (nice section on housebreaking), and even a little on showing your dog. If you are only going to buy one book on Great Danes, I would buy this one.
- My family recently decided to add a dog to our house. All, except the cat, were in agreement. I argued for a Great Dane. I had some friends who raised them when I was a kid and a professor who had one when I was in seminary. I remembered them as being impressing, friendly and faithful. Just to be sure, though, I bought this book to learn a little bit more. I'm glad I did.
The book does a fair job of covering the basics that any dog owner would need to know and does them from the point of view of having a dog that may well be the second largest member of the family. It is common sense to know that a Great Dane can steal food off your counter top a lot more effectively than a Chihuahua but there are other factors that are not so obvious. The book also does a reasonable job of going through the early training process and getting the dog house broken. This turned out to be of less use to us because the dog we obtained was already an adult and had been trained. Still, it might come in handy in the future.
For me, information about the breed was of the most use. This included discussion of temperament, differing varieties and such. After reading it, I felt able to make an informed decision about getting the dog. Clyde is now a loved member of the family and the cat is still hacked off.
- This is the book you find on the wire rack at Petsmart. The ones that are all pretty much the same, just that they've inserted the appropriate breed name as necessary. In other words, a general dog care manual. If you're looking for something a little more in depth, this isn't it.

5 comments about Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale.
- This is such an awesome dog story. It is full of real life fun and mayhem of owning a dog in a multiple dog family. It was witty and entertaining.
- I have been trying to find dog books that were as good as Marley and Me and had no luck. I read this book in a day... which I never do. I am from KC, and had no idea before reading this book that it was written by the co-founder of Three Dog Bakery right here in KC! On the first page it talked about him griving the loss of his childhood dog Blue; my first dog's name was Blue. As I kept reading I kept finding more and more things that "spoke" to me. I think this book is BETTER than Marley and Me... both books are my top faves. I might be bias as I'm from KC and remember taking my Blue there. But hardly believe I am.... notice no rating lower than a 4 on here! This book was wonderfully written. It will make you think about life, your own animals, and how everything happens for a reason. I can't say enough wonderful things about this book. (I checked this book out from the library... but will be buying it so that I may own a copy and have others read it, and proceeds of the book go to the Gracie Foundation... to help neglected and abused animals.) This book is not just about a dog; it's how an animal no one wanted showed him how to live and love, one day at a time.
- It's a great book in so many different aspects. It still brings me to tears when I think of Gracie, and I have been sure to give extra loven to my Zoie, a beautiful and very mischievious Great Dane, everyday. After reading the book, I don't even mind so much now when I end up holding on to the edge of my king size bed for dear life while Zoie is spralled out taking up 90% of the bed snoring away while I haven't gotten a good night sleep in ages. I didn't even yell at her when she ate three pairs of shoes in one week. The book makes you want to be better to your dogs, do more with them and enjoy them every day. I know my life is happy and fulfilled because of my canine family and my skin family. All six of my dogs are rescues, and they are amazing and wonderful dogs just like Gracie!
- Great book that had me actually laughing out loud, tearing up, and also sobbing. You go on Gracie and Dan's journey and live it with them.
- The books came in and it was like brand new....in fact if I hadn't known I ordered it used I would never have known. It was a great gift and the seller is another I would use again. The book came sooner than promised and was in even better shape than described.
