- This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!
- This was a very informative and helpful book. The Author provides keen insight into the care, responsibilities and phsyche of the Apollo of dogs.
- I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.
- BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.
The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone. Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.
- I bought this book because I was considering getting a Great Dane. I wanted to study up on the breed before committing to having one. It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.

5 comments about Guide to Owning a Great Dane: Puppy Care, Health, Feeding, Training, Showing, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series).
- This book was quite informative and easy to read. It would be particularly beneficial to someone thinking about purchasing a Dane. It gives a lot of information without being difficult to read or going into more detail than is necessary for a novice Dane owner.
- Great! An informative and interesting read for the average prerson who is looking into the breed. The high gloss pages and many photos in the book were beautiful. It is a high quality book for the price. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in the great dane.
- The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.
- Great Dane
My stepson just bought a Great Dane puppy and this book makes an excellent guide to a first time Great Dame owners. It has everything you need to be a knowledgeable Great Dane owner.
Highly recommended for Great Dane owners or someone just thinking about buying this breed.
Gunner November 2007
- Although the pictures are great, there is actually very little useful information contained w/i this book. It was too basic for me and was a let down.

5 comments about Great Danes: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training With 46 Color Photos (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- This was pretty good and i will use it as a reference, but i was a little frustrated with the book. Throughout almost the entire middle section instead of answering very important questions on the topic of the chapter, he would just say "check with your great dane mentor for information on...." - feeding, bloat, purchasing, etc, etc etc. I got this book to get this guys opinion not for him to tell me to check with someone else. I did think that the sections on training were good.
- A good, easy to read overview of the Great Dane. Enjoyed it. Helped me prepare for being a first time Dane owner, and left me with a very good idea of what to expect.
- I think this is an excellent book for an overview of Great Danes and the considerations in deciding to own one. Making the decision to get a giant breed is a big one and this book is great for considering all that comes along with that. I would say it's better for people to read BEFORE deciding whether to buy a Great Dane to prepare and make sure you're up for all that's involved, but as far as a complete book for a Great Dane owner, I would recommend getting a book that has more specifics on the various topics rather than just an overview. This is NOT a one and only book for the Great Dane owner.
- I found this book extremely helpful it cover just about everything. I strongly recomend it.
- Great book for the price. A little high in shipping using Media Mail though.

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Great Danes (New Owner's Guide To...).
- I have been considering a Great Dane for a while now and want to read up before making that huge leap. Jill Swedlow's name was on 3 out of the 5 Great Dane books I found.
The part written by her about the breed is wonderful. It is clear she loves the breed but also points out why Danes are not the breed for everyone. She knows her stuff and conveys it in a manner that is friendly and compelling. The main problem was that almost half the book is a generic dog guide. It relates to training and other issues, but it does *not* specifically address the problems with a dog that is as big as you are. I hope Swedlow writes a comprehensive Dane book. I would buy it in a second.
- Very well written book, easy to understand and you could tell written by someone with years of experience with this breed of dog. Examples of behavior set forth in this book I could easily see in my dogs. Great Help from Great Book.
- I am a wannabe Dane owner and have just been researching before I purchase - this book has a lot of good information for individuals in my position.
- Jill Swedlow has written an excellent and informative book for the first-time Great Dane owner. Not only does it explain in great detail the responsiblities of the owner, but also tries to discourage those who may not be prepared for the demands of this "Gentle Giant." If you are purchasing a Great Dane for the first time, or just need a "refresher" on the care of your "best friend," this is the book for you. I always have my copy handy. I truly enjoyed it.
- My wife wants Great Danes and this book was a great place to get insight, and if she could handle these big, but gentle dogs. The book even as small as it is has every aspect of the Danes good and bad. Instead of one my wife now wants three! That's how informative this book is.

- This book has some basic and very general knowledge. I was a bit dissappointed, and had hoped it would give me a more complete picture of the Great Dane breed
- Basic history and breed info is OK, but a disappointing proportion of the book covers general dog information (i.e. training) instead of looking at the specific issues faced when teaching a great dane. I already own general dog books thus I was looking for a manual which covered more dane-centric issues.
- this book was the best book i ever read i have three great danes and this booked helped sooooo much the auther must really love great danes because this book is the best book and i have read alot of good books.

4 comments about The Invisible Dog.
- This book is about a girl named Janie who finds a collar that belonged to her Great Dane, Rupert, who died when she was younger.
She carries it with her down the street. Mrs. Garrow, one of her neighbors, sees her and makes believe that she is petting a dog and gives Janie compliments on it. So Janie names her invisible harlequin Great Dane, Henry. She takes him everywhere she goes except school. When her birthday comes her parents surprise her and take her to a dog show. She hopes the Harlequin Great Dane will win. Read the book to find out who wins the show, what Mrs. Garrow finds in the teacup and how Janie's dream of owning a Great Dane comes true. If you enjoy books that you can't put down, you'll love this one. I really love books about dogs so that is why I would recommend it to others who love dog stories.
- I am always looking for "animal" stories to interest my daughter. This author has written many stories that keep her interest and The Invisible Dog is no exception. The story is simple, a girl wants a dog, her parents are reluctant. The girl finds an old collar and leash and imagines her pet. Through a series of remarkable coincidences, her dream comes true at the end of the story.
- The author of the junior novel which the film Babe was based on has written a great tale about a dog named Henry. The Invisible Dog is a quick and simple read that both children and adults will enjoy. There are also a few illustrations inside as well.
Henry is a Great Dane and only a little girl named Janie and an old lady at the end of the street can see him. To everyone else Henry is invisible at a disturbing at times imagination of Janie who just seems to be carrying the family's dead dog's collar around the place. Janie knows Henry is real, she feeds it invisible food and cleans up its invisible waste and her father has told if she can raise $500 they'll get a dog everyone can see. Janie is very specific though, she knows the colour and everything that the dog they will get will be, because she's been walking it everyday for a long time now.
- When I read the review of this book I thought it would be good for my 7-year-old grand-daughterwho had a smiilar experience and was still mourning the loss of Labrador. I liked the topic and the story. However, I was stunned by the gray pages and dark print of the book. I didn't expect a Disney type picture book, but books for children should, at least, be on clear, strong, good white paper. The quality of this book reminded me of the books put out during and after WWII when the paper industry was just beginning to recycle paper. What a disappointment. I was embarrassed to give my granddaughter this dingy looking book.

- I purchased a great dane and really was looking for something breed specific to find information to help me to care for my dane correctly. It answered my questions very well and in easy to read and understand language. A must for any first-time dane owner. Many beautiful Dane pictures. And very economically priced.
- Service is great and the book arrived in new condition. Its a great resource for people willing to have a great dane puppy.
- From the first sentence of the boook, there is a recurring theme that "Giant Dogs bring Giant Responsibilities." While this is certainly good advice, it was repeated so often throughout the book that I got the impression that the author was trying to discourage readers from getting a Great Dane. He spent a lot of time discussing health issues (always the problems the dog can get)but little time discussing what to do about them. AFter reading the book, it is enough to make a prospective owner consider opting for another breed. If you read the book, balance it with information from another Great Dane book, as this one is biased against new owners.
- This was an ok Dane book. I bought Great Dane: Model of Nobility and that is the best book for anyone wanting to know about Great Danes. It gives all the info you could ever want. It is out of print, but you can get it from a marketplace vendor or you can go to the author's dane website. Just google Jill Swedlow and you will find it. She has where you can print it out for free off of her site.
- I got this book since we are adopting a Great Dane from a rescue. The information in the book is a little too basic for my tastes. As Great Danes has special feeding requirements and are subject to a lot of diseases (all deep-chested dogs are) I could have used more information. This is okay to give a kid or teenager to read or someone who wants a general idea about Danes, but I will be getting a more in-depth book before I get my Dane.

5 comments about Great Dane: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- My family recently decided to add a dog to our house. All, except the cat, were in agreement. I argued for a Great Dane. I had some friends who raised them when I was a kid and a professor who had one when I was in seminary. I remembered them as being impressing, friendly and faithful. Just to be sure, though, I bought this book to learn a little bit more. I'm glad I did.
The book does a fair job of covering the basics that any dog owner would need to know and does them from the point of view of having a dog that may well be the second largest member of the family. It is common sense to know that a Great Dane can steal food off your counter top a lot more effectively than a Chihuahua but there are other factors that are not so obvious. The book also does a reasonable job of going through the early training process and getting the dog house broken. This turned out to be of less use to us because the dog we obtained was already an adult and had been trained. Still, it might come in handy in the future.
For me, information about the breed was of the most use. This included discussion of temperament, differing varieties and such. After reading it, I felt able to make an informed decision about getting the dog. Clyde is now a loved member of the family and the cat is still hacked off.
- This is the book you find on the wire rack at Petsmart. The ones that are all pretty much the same, just that they've inserted the appropriate breed name as necessary. In other words, a general dog care manual. If you're looking for something a little more in depth, this isn't it.
- Very informative in a bright easy to read format. With lots of pictures which I loved.
- This book was helpful with some tips on owning a Great Dane, but most of what it had to say was general and not exactly specific to the Dane. The majority of the advice was about dog ownership in general. In fact, in the section "Is the Great Dane right for you?" it basically said, "if you are ready for the responsibility of owning a dog and have the room for it to live and the money to buy its food, then the Great Dane is right for you." I was hoping for a little more that applied to getting a Great Dane. All-in-all the book did have some good tips for anyone who is looking to own a large or giant breed dog.
- This was a well-written general guide for dog owners, and I enjoyed the pictures of great danes. While it was a good read, I would have preferred information more specific to this breed. It was a little general for my tastes. While the name is mostly accurate (it is a comprehensive guide for your dog), it was still somewhat lacking if you wanted more information regarding this breed.

- Extremely quick delivery and the book was in perfect condition. I will definitely use this seller in the future.
- This is a great book for any dog lover! It's the touching and humorous story of Gracie, a lovable, deaf, albino Great Dane who is rescued by the author. Her finicky eating habits were the impetus behind the creation of the successful business, Three Dog Bakery. Dye is an entertaining storyteller, who reminds us how animals can touch our lives in amazing ways. This book had me laughing and crying!
- Super fast delivery in just a few days and product received as expected. I would buy again from this seller
- Deep, heartwarming and inspiring. This book will touch you deeply if you care about animals. A very special author with a very special voice.
- Simply put, one of the best dog stories I've ever read. The cute drawings perfectly illustrate the text and made me laugh. Many wonderful memories about Gracie and her role in the creation and running of Three Dog Bakery. Fair warning to the soft of heart, along with the laughter and smiles is of course tears, because sadly, all dogs eventually go to heaven.
What truly makes Gracie a special dog is the unspoken part of her story, that because of her, many dogs have either been saved from death or had their life spans increased. Both Three Dog Bakery and the Gracie Foundation were created because of her and both organizations have helped saved numerous dogs from death. Three Dog Bakery through it's products and recipes has provided dog lovers a way to better provide their dogs a healthier diet, and the Gracie Foundation acts as a "Red Cross" for dogs in need.
Hopefully another reviewer has put the following more eloquently than I. What made this book memorable for me was that it showed how adopting a special needs animal although challenging is greatly rewarding. Maybe it's because a special needs pet requires more attention, and the more love and attention we as people give, the more rewarding the relationship and the closer we feel to our friend in fur, scales, feathers, shell etc.. I certainly feel that way about my special needs cat.
FYI, Gracie was born November 11, 1989 and passed away January 21, 1999. Dottie was born September 1, 1988 and passed away on June 23, 1999, just a few months after Gracie. Sarah born February 1, 1987 and passed away December 31, 2001, a year after this book was published. Dye and Bekloff continue to love dogs, but they sold their interest in Three Dog Bakery and are now involved in real estate.
