- Only the first 33 pages of this 190 page book are GWP specific. The rest is generic dog care info, and lots of marketing for certain brands of dog chews etc. Buy it if you are GWP mad, like us, and must have every book about them you can. Otherwise, don't! And definitely don't buy it expecting to find out what the breed is really like, or if they would suit you as a pet. This book does not contain enough information to help you make this type of decision! The only good point is the pictures in the first 33 pages.

5 comments about German Wirehaired Pointers Today (Book of the Breed).
- This book is a very thorough examination of the breeds history and origin. Also gives particular attention to some of the great GWP's in the past that contributed to making this the excellent dog that it is today. A good read for anyone who is familiar with the breed and interested in competing in the ring or the field with thier dog.
- This is a great book, focusing specifically on the breed. It has information on all aspects of owning a German wire-haired pointer (and indeed a lot of information on general dog owning), from choosing a puppy through up-bringing, showing, training and working. It doesn't, however, assume that you will show or work your dog, so it is also good for people who simply want a family pet. Having bought my puppy from Sharon, I know that she is extremely knowledgeable about the breed.
- Sharon's book covers everything the GWP owner would like to know, from the basics of new puppy questions to being a resource for breeders. I especially like being able to see pictures of our breed's foundation sires and dams.
It's probably time for this book to be updated as there are several top kennels and dogs to be considered today. This book is currently considered "the breed book." I have recommended this book to all my puppy buyers to trace their pup's ancestors, including pictures, what fun!
- Very good and informative book for German Wirehaired Pointer owners or anyone that is interested in the breed. Very thorough.
- Welll..it's a matter of what you want.
This 154-page book is by an English show breeder and judge ,and as such the book is somewhat jolting at times, as when reference is made in the "field" section to a dog dropping to a whistle, flushing on command or information on falconry or deerhunting with your GWP. It is very show-oriented, featuring show kennels around the world, and as the book was written in 1994, somewhat dated. Note dates of the other reviews here. Interesting comments on the differences betweene the US and UK Breed Standard and good illustations of them.
Good pictures of lots of dogs, all in B/W. Terrible last chapter, and ending of book. Just stated "common ailments" (a ploy to expand the book's length) , not mentioning bloat, a genuine problem, and then ended the book with no closing summary.
Medium book for idle reading, especially for a conformation (show) person in the UK. There are better books, but it's definitely a matter of what you want. Not really worth three stars objectively, but as those who buy it have an interest (myself included),that's probably worth an extra point.

1 comments about German Wirehaired Pointer (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- We bought the book after getting an 8 month old male puppy at a super adopt-a-thon thought to be "mostly" German Wirehaired Pointer. I feel like the author was observing our dog, describing him to a "T". Because this breed is extremely energetic and intelligent, they can be quite a handful. This book has been very helpful in providing insight about how to handle our new pet by teaching us about this particular breed's characteristics.
