  1. This is a great book for the person who wants to know the history of the GSP. There is alot of information on the breed and where it came from and is going. If you think this book is going to give tips on specific training for the GSP it does not!! Over all it is a good book if you want to learn the history of your GSP past and present. This book also gives names and {BLK/WHT} photos of champions.

  2. This not a "how to" book, rather an updated story of the German Shorthaired Pointer. Up to date and accurate. The very best since C. Bede Maxwell's fine book from 1982. If you want to know the history and the direction of the breed in America this is the best thing available.

  3. Robert McKeown gives a through knowledge of the history of the german shorthair without being bias. Robert gives alot of factual data of how the blood lines where developed from imports to what the gsp is today and the future. Robert McKowen includes every type of organization that evaluates our hunting/show partners if its navhda, nstra, field trials, bench shows,or the hunt tests. He has listed every champion from bench to field that has shaped of what the gsp is today in the U.S. If you are a proud owner, breeder, or just wanting to learn about the "greats" that started the german shorthair in the U.S. this book is for you. Great book I really enjoyed reading.

  4. Mr. McKowen picked up where C.D.Maxwell left off. This is the breed bible. Mr. McKowen's extensive experience and knowledge of the breed affords novice owners and people researching the breed with a wealth of valuable information. The book also provides veteran owners with a nicely organized reference. Required reading!

  5. I really enjoyed this one. So much information and so wonderfully presented. Even if you don't like GSP's, you WILL after reading this book!

  1. I had to give this book a low score, but I admit Mr. Layton didn't write it for me. If you are planning to hunt, try, and show your GSP, then this is the book for you. But if you are like me, and you want a dog as a loving family member, active participant in outdoor events; if you could care less about the dog's lineage (as long as he is healthy); and if you think the AKC and FCI are just a bit nuts for telling you your dog is no good because he is a few centemeters too short, don't read this book. Admittedly, most GSP owners are professional handlers and hunters. But there are a lot of us out there, too. And we don't appreciate Mr. Layton's snide remarks about those who hold the quite reasonable belief that it is possible to enjoy nature without murdering it. This book presents a strange mix. It is at once too detailed and too simple. For example, the section on breeding bitches is excellently detailed, but I doubt the average reader would use this book as a guide in that regard. By contrast, the sections on puppy and field training are woefully inadequate, and the only way to train a dog according to this book would be to select a previously trained dog to work with, which defeats the purpose. Mr. Layton assumes too much of his readers. Somehow, he goes from his excellent section on birth to a similarly excellent section on advanced retrieval work. But how we got our week-old puppy to that advanced state of training seems to have been left on the editing-room floor. I also did not enjoy Mr. Layton's superscilious atttitude toward raising dogs. Though he is correct that the safest bet in purchasing a dog is to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, those of us who rescue adult GSPs from the pound (and certain euthanasia) and work patiently with them, knowing that they will probably never achieve their puppy potential, deserve the accolades (not the derision) of our fellow dog owners. In sum, if this is the only book you will ever buy for your GSP, find something else. If you are a hunter or champion breeder, this may be the book for you. If you are training your dog independently, and want this book only as a supplement, enjoy it. But to anyone who can't understand why some humans get a thrill out shooting defenseless creatures for sport, steer clear--this book will only upset you.

  2. Unfortunately, the paper is of a much higher quality than the information or organization of the book. There is very little information regarding American field trials. The scant info included is primarily about a few midwestern GSP trainers and owners. There is no information regarding NAVHDA field trials. The training book published by NAVHDA is a much better more systematic guide to training a verstile hunting dog such as the GSP.

Most of the info on kennels and breeders is focused on show kennels and show dogs. For those readers interested in history of the GSP and current trends in breeding in a much more comprehensive manner, I recommend Der Deutsch-Kurzhaar. It costs 3 times as much but is 20 times better.

  3. This book is informative for the novice GSP owner and also a useful reference book for owners who show and work. Valuable breed line information in one book.

  4. Great Book! This is what you should know, at the very least, before you go out to buy a German Shorthaired Pup. If your breeder isn't raising the litter this way look elsewhere. This breed is one of the smartest types of dog around. BUT you have to start them early and you can not slack up on them. If you follow the guides in this book it is easy, but Please give your dog these needed encouragements to be "ALL THAT HE CAN BE" If you were to follow this book to the letter both you and your dog will be winners.

  1. This book is intended for those considering the breed, and it is a wonderful and funny introduction. It is also a fine book for those who have owned GSPs before to enjoy and reflect on their experience with the breed. A must for a person considering getting the breed for the first time. It is in depth about the breed history, standard, and breed character. Not a training guide, but that is not its apparent purpose. Read this one BEFORE you get a GSP.

  2. We love our adopted shelter GSP dog and when were thinking of one, we bought this invaluable book. Excellent information, characterization of the breed and written with humor. This book is for current owners and potential owners. We love our dog and use this book as a reference when we have questions on him. This book accurately described his temperant, needs and how to care for him.

  3. Nancy Campbell captures the true essence of the breed in her personal, up-close approach. Her descriptions of what makes the GSP special, I found are accurate and heart warming. Not only is the book informative and extremely well organized, it is also fun reading! I especially liked some of the training techniques. I have tried them and they work.

  4. The author, Nancy Campbell, captures the true essence of the German Shorthair Pointer, their versatility, their personality, etc. As a result, folks considering adoption or ownership will discover what they need to know before they make a commitment to the breed.

Becoming breed knowledgeable is extremely important so that the rate for abandonment and shelter turn-ins can lessen over time. Nancy arms the reader with more than enough information to make an educated decision "about everything GSP"! I personally recommended this book to several people over the last year and they have all reported that this book was a valuable tool in their decision making process!

  5. This is an excellent book it has helped me learn alot about the GSP. Vendor was great recevied my book a mere 4 days after ordering and I live overseas.

  1. From the photo on the inside front cover to The back inside cover. I doubt that you will find anyting you do not like. This Book is totally up-to-date That is what makes it so great. You are not reading a book that was how they did it in them Good Ole Days. The info and photos are all for todays German Shorthaired Pointer. If it misses anything I for one do not know what that maybe.

  1. I bought this book a few weeks ago and ever since I started reading it my pointer has made extreme progress I would recomend this book to any one looking to train there pointer.

  2. This is a generic "how to feed your puppy" book with a couple of pictures of GSP's and one extra chapter devoted to the breed. If you don't already know the information contained in the book, you have never owned a dog in your life. Spend the extra cash on "New Complete GSP's" or "GSP's Today"

  3. This book touches all the bases. Excellent for the new dog owner. Make no mistake, it is NOT the end of ones personal gsp library, unless using the dog as "just" a pet. I would recommend others as well. This book does just what it is intended to, introduce the GSP owner with brief history and insight into his/her new K9 friend. For the price you can't beat it.

  4. This book is an excellent, concise introduction to anyone even remotely considering getting one of these dogs. It covers everything from how to pick a puppy, deciding if these are the right type of dog for you and how to find this out, diseases and ailments that these dogs are prone to, basic puppy and dog training methods, housetraining, and basic hunting methods. Along with a complete description of the accepted breed standard and competitions available for your dog. Though this should not be the only book a new GSP owner should get, it is recommended as the first one to get when deciding.

  5. As a breeder of German Shorthaired Pointers at [....], I give this book with each puppy sold. Allot of other books, even some with GSP in their title are warmed over generic puppy books. This book is specific to my breed and full of valuable information for the beginner and the experienced GSP owner.
