4 comments about Field Spaniel: A Complete and Reliable Handbook (Rare Breed).
- Field Spaniels are a rare breed with characterics much different from their close cousins, cocker spaniels and Springer spaniels. As a result, there is not a lot of information available about the breed. This is the book to study if you are interested in a Fieldie. It is written by a respected breeder and Fieldie enthusiast and well thought of by those who love the breed.
- Great informative book. The author includes the cons as well as the pros of owning a Field Spaniel. They're great dogs for the right people. You'll know after reading this book if this breed is right for you.
- This book has been very helpful to us before getting our field spaniel and even better now that he is here. My 8 year old daughter has even read it several times.
- a must for anyone who knows little or nothing about this rare breed, covers almost every thing and gives a sound and through coverage of all material available.

- Very informative and easy to read book about the Field Spaniel. A must for all new owners!
- I was deciding to purchase either a Field Spaniel or an English Cocker Spaniel. This book had a lot of information about the field spaniel to help me make my decision. This is money well spent if you would like to learn more about field spaniels as a field spaniel owner or as someone considering adding one to their family.
- I like books that are comprehensive, but compact rather than encyclopedic. At 150 pages, for me, this book is the perfect size. Short chapters, lots of clearly labelled sections, plenty of great pictures, and covers everything you need to know (breed characteristics, training, healthcare). Easy to pick up and flick through whenever you have a few minutes to spare, or great for sitting down and reading cover to cover over a few pleasant hours.
Highly recommended for new Field Spaniel owners, or those considering this breed.

2 comments about Gun Dog Breeds: A Guide to Spaniels, Retrievers, and Pointing Dogs.
- A very honest look at various flushing, pointing, and retrieving breeds. Includes strengths and weaknesses of each breed, ease of training, suitability to certain types of game, etc. Is now somewhat dated and does not reflect emerging interest in a few of the rarer continental gun dogs, which are given only a brief mention in the back of the book. Was also written before the recent explosive growth in popularity of the field-bred English Cocker. Fergus' bias toward flushing dogs shows through a bit, as he neglects to mention the pointing breeds' invaluable use in covering wide open tracts of land (which saves the hunter the task of doing so). Still, these are minor criticisms, and most first-time gun dog would likely be better of with a retriever or spaniel anyway, for reasons Fergus states. This book should be required reading for all first-time buyers of gun dogs, too many of whom end up buying a dog completely unsuited for their hunting purposes and lifestyle---often because of some of "sales copy" they read on a breeder's website or in some other dog book. The more objective approach in this book will not only help hunters avoid such mistakes, it may also help reduce the number of unwanted gun dogs submitted to shelters annually by people who find out too late that such dogs are more than they can handle.
- The author seems to have very strong opinions about many things and I found that to be a turn-off. It was nice to see a little information about rarer sporting breeds towards the back of the book. I have many books that were more helpful than this one, but this book hit on the rarer breeds which was appreciated.

5 comments about A Rough-Shooting Dog.
- I read this book to learn something about training English Springer Spaniels. I walked away with a deeper reflection on myself. The Author shares his experiences during the time when he acquired his first Springer. He also shared with you things that where happening in his life (like the passing of his father) and the deeper understanding of nature that blossomed during that same period. A wonderful book and a great read.
- I have read other books by this author. Most of them are autobiographical (mixed with practical hints about dog training and bird hunting). All are well written. This one is the best, I think. That relationship with his springer transcends the usual mush. The dog obviously was a paragon, the dog of a lifetime.
The reciprocity between the two gives the lie to those who claim that dogs have learned how to con humans into doing their wont.
The book is well worth reading. It will enlighten and grab you.
- If you have owned a Springer, enhance your enjoyment & memories with this wonderful read. A great book.
- My husband just realized his dream of owning a Field English Springer Spaniel. I bought this book as a birthday gift - HE LOVES IT
- This was a great purchase, and I am grateful for someone who suggested this book in a review of another of Charles Fergus's books, "A Hunter's Book of Days". It relates this hunter's first year with his Springer Spaniel, from finding a suitable litter of field-bred pups, training, and several hunts of game-birds including grouse, pheasants, and ducks. A very enlightening, moving, and entertaining read (I had to laugh or exclaim aloud at various points.) I already purchased another as a gift. This edition has a new Preface written in 2006; the original publication was 1991.

2 comments about Hunting with Spaniels: Training Your Flushing Dog (Country Dog).
- Hunting with Spaniels: Training Your Flushing Dog is a fine pick for any spaniel owner who wants to embark on a training program. Hunt-test judge author Paul Morrison relays why spaniels are fine gun-dogs, offering advice on how to create a hunting partner and including color photos of various spaniel breeds and training scenarios. Any spaniel owner who wants a key to creating a fine hunting dog will need this guide.
- Big thanks to Gypsumoon5 for prompt international despatch . Book was very well packed for the long journey . Really good book with plenty of colour pics & top quality text . What I got most from the book was that a springer is not the right hunting dog for me . That made the book extra good value as I will not be stuck with a dog for 10 years that does not suit..... that would not be fair for either of us
