  1. The 'must have' book for everyone who is thinking about getting an English Springer Spaniel puppy or perhaps has already brought their new puppy home. This book offers lots of help and guidance ... and reassurance to ensure that the puppy's needs are being met. Not to mention the health and welfare and enjoyment of the owner! A first class piece of writing that puts the reader at ease.

  1. This is a very good basic book. The color pictures are beautiful.

  2. Art Perle obviously has a lot of experience and heart for English Springers. This is not a general book that would be appropriate for every dog from a Yorkie to a Fila Brasiliero. This man actually HAS and RAISES ESS. We were familiar with these dogs, having been owned by one for 11 years and having others in the family. My only complaint was too much paper spent in training ESS for the field. If I were interested in training my Spaniel for the field, I would buy a book specifically speaking to that sort of thing. But it's a great book and ooooohhh those puppy pictures!!!!

  1. THIS BOOK HAS REALLY HELPED ME ALOT WITH OWNING MY SPRINGER. iT TEACHES YOU ALOT ABOUT THE BREED. NOT ONLY DOES IT HAVE GOOD INFORMATION, BUT IT ALSO HAS WONDERFUL PICTURES.

  2. We purchased this book to get info on the ESS breed and its care as we'd put a deposit on a pup after researching via internet. This book does give a concise abbreviated overview of the breed. For a quick reference it suffices but it falls short of details and specifics. For instance the training section is extremely brief and certainly does not address bringing the pup into your home and beginning an indepth housebreaking routine and training system. This did provide a jumping off point; however if you plan on getting the dog...get a more detail manual.

  3. This book was very beneficial in giving me the info I needed to better prepare for my new puppy. It had breed information as well as a list of essential items I would need now and in the future for maintaining and training my dog.

1 comments about Max's Rules (Max & Annie) (Max & Annie).
  1. Max is a dog who was adopted by a very nice family and who, along with another dog named Annie thought things were just fine -- until the family brings home a puppy called Tak! An unhappy Max lays down a lot of rules to young Tak, rules that don't permit any fun stuff to happen. Until Tak shows Max that the two of them can be friends and have a great deal of rather messy fun together. Charmingly written in a rhyming text by reading specialist Sandra J. Philipson and profusely illustrated by syndicated cartoonist and children's magazine and book illustrator Jenny Campbell, Max's Rules is specifically recommended reading for anyone having a new baby added to their family, those families who are adopting a baby, and those families who are bringing an adopted animal into their home. The additions of enrichment activities including a Readers' Theater, word and vocabulary builders, and writing suggestions, make Max's Rules a particularly appropriate acquisition for school library collections as well.

  1. My kids love this book! We met the author at a book signing and saw both this book and her other about their other dog, Annie. It is a great book that will make you and your kids howl out loud. These books are great - the other is Annie loses her leg but finds her way and is very special. Your kids will love these books and the illustrations in them.

  2. I just met the author and the illustrator of this book at a local bookstore. Annie, Max's sister was also there, but Max was too dirty to come. The book is well written, and the illustrations are enjoyable. I read this book to a 3rd-grade class today (I'm a substitute teacher), and they enjoyed it. They laughed at several points, especially when Max rolled in fresh horse poop. I recommend it for 2nd grade through 5th grade. This book is a self-published book, but that does not mean that it is lacking in quality. Sandra Phillipson (the author) chose the self-publishing route mainly because she wanted Robert Takatch (the illustrator) to illustrate it, and she was afraid if she went through a publisher, she would lose that option. He knows these dogs and has done a nice job of conveying their personalities through his artwork. I tried to give this book 4 and a half stars instead of 4.

  4. We gave this book to our son who had just acquired the dog from a neighbor who did not want him. He says the book is very helpful, he intends to be a responsible dog owner. I have not seen the book.

  5. The book isn't terrible, but the ESS specific parts are very short. Most of the book is written and re-used across the entire 'Healthy happy pet' series. The pictures are pretty bad - and overall the information is generic. Plus, the reviews by 'A Customer' look pretty clearly written by a publisher/editor, etc.

5 comments about Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way.
  1. This is a sweet book about two family pets--Springer spaniels--and how they communicate when Annie, the older dog, loses her leg to cancer. The mischievious younger dog Max brings a smile to all with his antics and attitude. This is an excellent tool for getting kids to use their imagination, talk about writing, mental and visual images. This book sets the stage for the author's later books with more adventures for Max and Annie.

  2. I teach a summer class about different dog breeds. I use episodes of Breed All About It from Animal Planet channel. The episode was about Springer Spaniels, and this book as well as the author were featured. This inspired me to purchase the books for an after-school program I run. I love dogs and I am also an EMT, this is a great way to incoporate both of my interests into the program and help those children who made need to deal with this issue at a point in their lives.

  3. I had heard about the book on a television program which showed how this book was being read in hospitals to children who were cancer patients in order to help them understand the reasons for surgery, treatment, etc. So I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter after learning that I had myself had breast cancer, and required a mastectomy.

In this book, Annie, a dog, gets cancer. Her owners take her to the veterinarian for surgery. When Annie comes home, she only has three legs. Max, her dog brother, doesn't understand this. Annie explains that she lost her leg in order to save her life!

This book is wonderful! It really helped my daughter understand my situation in a way that only good children's literature can!
(I am a 14 year veteran public school teacher, by the way, so I know good children's literature when I see it!)

If you, your child, a family member, your pet, or anyone else you know is going through this horrible disease, get this book and read it to your child!

(I am happy to report that I am now cancer-free, by the way!)

  4. I have met the author when she visited my school she is very nice, My teacher read us this story because the author came and everybody loved it. It teaches you people do get better. It is a great book for children and teaches a great lesson.

  5. When our dog was scheduled for amputation of a front leg due to bone cancer, we read this book with our nine-year-old son, to get him used to the idea. The main character's companion expresses all the questions and fears that a child normally has, and gives the amputee a chance to say, basically, we all wish things were different, but I'm going to be OK.

It's very well written and illustrated, and after reading this book and talking about it a lot, our son was ready to act positive and upbeat when we brought our dog home. Key word: "act." We all agreed that it's OK to leave the room and cry if that's how we feel, but we need to be upbeat around our dog, for her sake. As it happened, our dog gave us ample reason to be genuinely upbeat, and there have been only a few bouts of sadness.

This book made the adjustment much easier for our son. Highly recommended.

2 comments about Forever Home.
  1. The latest novel in the Max and Annie series, Forever Home is a chapter book for young readers distinguished by its high-quality paper, its gentle color illustrations on virtually every other page, and its heartwarming story. Trini, a cheerful three-legged English springer spaniel, finds herself abandoned when her owner passes away. Her journey in search of a new "forever home" will take her past obstacles and through hard times, but with courage and cheer, Trini is determined to brave any obstacle. Highly recommended, especially for young dog lovers.

  2. Wonderful story..It is very important that children and parents are aware of Rescue Services...maybe through books like these more families will contact the rescue people and the "puppy mills" will cease their horribe operations. Our very best little doxy was a rescue dog and I cannot say enough about these caring people...GREAT BOOK !!!

3 comments about How to Train Your English Springer Spaniel (How To...(T.F.H. Publications)).
  1. Ms. Palika's easy to understand description of the English Springer makes for informative reading. A high energy and active breed, it's most important that owners teach their Springers basic obedience and manners. Easy to understand steps in this book will help owners to teach their dogs what is to be expected of them, and to have fun with the training. This is particularly a wonderful guide for the first-time Springer owner. Read and learn!

  2. this is a very good book. it has a lot of usefull tips. we just got this book the other day and every day since then we've been reading this book. Even if you get tired of reading the pictures are very fun to look at.

  3. Although the book has a lot of nice pictures, much of the information is basic. I thought it was not very comprehensive. The book itself is tiny, and you could easily read it cover to cover in half an hour or less. I was not impressed. Save your money and go with a more complete book on English Springer Spaniels, like "The English Springer Spaniel", also sold on this website.
