4 comments about Irish Setters (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- In preparation for adding an Irish Setter to our family - I found this book to be extremely helpful. Very up front on who and why you should get one of these beautiful dogs.
- This soft cover book is attractive in appearance but it lacks many things. It has no information on major genetic diseases and research being done in universities to catalog and eventually be able to control or do away with these serious diseases. Fortunately you can go on the American Kennel Website for this kind of information.
This book tells you about purchasing, caring for, nutrition, breeding, behavior and training, just like it says on the very first page.
I ordered this book hastily and mostly because there were only about one or two books on Irish Setters, I really had no choice and got this one out of desperation.
It has very few photographs.
It is the standard and boring book on dogs.
BUT ... in the chapter on "Raising Quality Irish Setters" it does have a very short information and warning. The author writes, "Study canine genetics and learn about dog breeding in depth." And the author continues, "You should have your dog's hips, eyes, and possibly other areas checked for any conditions that may be genetic in origin and thus could be passed along." Here the author could have gone into more details about these possible genetic diseases. But since this book is "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual", I suppose detailed information on genetic diseases is not supposed to be included in the book.
So be it, it is 2007 and thankfully we do have the internet where all this information is very available to us. I have never owned an Irish Setter and before I ever go out and get one, I want to know what I am getting into. I want to know if they get epilepsy for example, ... especially if I get the dog from a shelter! I won't know it's lineage or who bred it, I won't know what disease it could get.
With my husband Bruno's Doberman Pinschers, at least we know who bred them and what diseases their parent's died from, and we are "prepared" for these possibilities, having them routinely medically examined and participating in genetic testing.
The other thing that is lacking in this book is cute anecdotes of the daily pranks and ways of Irish Setters, probably because the author did not have his own dog while writing the book. Instead he consulted with three breeders for information on the dogs. Because of this, the book is in such need of personal accounts, heart warming accounts, making the book rather sterile.
- This author obviously loves Irish Setters, not just dogs in general. It's well written and arranged for quick reference
- This book is MUCH FOR THE "BEGINNER-FIRST OWNER VS an experienced dog lover.
It seems to be fairly outdated AND elementary.
Hopefully, Someone will publish an update, especially since it has been years and the Breed, training and techniques have "progressed
Inexpensive and OK for just laying the "groundwork"

1 comments about The New Complete English Setter- A Compilation of Interesting Facts, Data & Observations on Breeding, Raising, Training, Showing & Hunting English Setters.
- This book was first published in 1951 and has been updated periodically since. This is the 1982, forth edition being reviewed. The photos are in black and white but quite good. The book gives a good overview of the history of this particular breed, it's care, breeding, training, grooming all all inbetween. This is one of the most complete works addressing a single breed I know of. For those who love this particular breed, this is a book you should really own. Over the past twenty years, the breed standards have changes somewhat (showing), unfortunately, but this does not distract from this work at all. For the history of the breed alone, this work is well worth the money. Recommend this one highly.

- written very well.descriptive,i felt i was there with him at the trials.but it was not as heart felt as jenny willow.i read jenny willow cover to cover.i couldn't put it down.
- I hated finishing this book. I looked forward to reading every page. I am an ol field trailer and certainly could relate, but anyone would enjoy this book because of the excellent writing style of Gaddis. The book brought home the great memories of my wonderful(now gone)hunting companions. This book touched me deeply!!
- I have lost count of the birddog books, stories and training, that I have subjected myself to over the years. But it is Zip Zap, which I have appreciated the most. Why? Mr Gaddis is so refreshingly frank and honest in this book. How many bird dog authors willing attest to the days when their dogs do more wrong than good, which we all know only too well can happen!! How many would attest to the under currents and human frailties of high class field trial participation.
His easy reading style of descriptive writing almost has you able to smell the autumn breezes, to sense the wind that the dogs are scenting, to feel the angst of a lost or hurt dog and to know the loss of a beloved fourlegged companion who has been with you through thick and thin.
Dispersed throughout are training examples which make sense!

5 comments about Cambridge Pronouncing Dictionary.
- CD is only to check the how it pronounced. the software is not usefull to check your accents. i think it is just waste of money
- The English Pronouncing Dictionary with CD-ROM is easy to use and very helpful for all levels of English speakers.
- If you operational system is WINDOWS VISTA do not buy this book because you will not hear the spoken pronunciation.
- Actually I already have the 16th edition of this title but after reading the description of this edition I thought I should by this edition because I found this sentence "NEW! Spoken North American pronunciations as well as British pronunciations for every word"
However after installing the software there are Spoken North American pronunciations and British pronunciations for the keywords only not for other forms (-s, -es, -ly, -ed, -ing) of these words
- I'm from Mexico and i never imagin that the services were fast, I live in the capital and it takes 10 days to arrive to my home.

- I would strongly recommend this book to anybody in love with Irish Setters, but particularly to the uniniciated future owner, like myself.
It covers all aspects involved in looking after this breed and explains in excellent detail all anyone needs to know from the puppy stage through to the mature pet.
In addition the book is illustrated with superb photographs plus an explanation of how healthy dogs should look and behave.
I can't wait to have my puppy home in a few weeks time!
- I purchased this book a couple of days after buying my children an Irish Setter puppy. The book covers everything about this breed. My oldest son really enjoyed reading it and found it to be very interesting and useful. It also includes lots of great photos.

5 comments about White Star: A Dog on the Titanic.
- I liked this book because it had imagination for the main character Star. I also liked that the story was based on a real event - the sinking of the Titanic. The book was challenging but not too hard. Parts of the book were sad too. I would recommend the book because you really feel like you are experiencing everything Sam and Star are experiencing.
- This book is called 'White Star". It's by Marty Crisp. I foud this book very intresting. It's about a boy named Sam on the Titanic. Sam would visit the dog shelter every day and bond with a dog named White Star. One night an iceburg hit the boat.Everyone started sinking into the ocean, exept White Satr and Sam.White Star was such good friends with Sam the he couldent risk loosing him.And thats how White Star saved Sam's life.I can recomed this book to anyone! It's that good!
by: Melanie DeCampos
- White Star A Dog on the Titanic, written by Mary Crisp, is about a boy named Sam Harris who is on his way to America to live with his mom and stepfather, and his friendships during the voyage of the Titanic. Sam's two best friends are Bucky and Star: Mr. J. Ismay's award winning Irish setter. Sam is quickly acquainted with all of the dogs aboard, though his favorite is still Star. Then in the morning on April 15th, Sam runs on deck to see that women and children are boarding the lifeboats. Sam's caretaker wants Sam to get into a lifeboat for the Titanic has struck an iceberg. Sam refuses and sprints to the dog kennel to get Star. Once back on deck, all life boats are loaded and Sam is pulled off the boat and into the water by Star. They are then rescued by lifeboat #4 and later picked up by the Carpathia. Sam then arrives in New York and is taken home by his mother, luckily with Star. I definitely recommend this novel for dog lovers and anyone who likes adventure.
The first reason why I recommend this exceptional novel was for the characters. They were real and/or very believable and you got to know them very well. For example, you know almost right away that Sam's father died of influenza, his mom moved and married a stranger (to Sam), and that he had to leave his grandparents. This makes you feel bad for Sam and so you want him to live or jump in a lifeboat when the Titanic sinks because you are "on his side." Another character you come to like is Robert Daniel, who automatically becomes friends with Sam and has a dog. He is a caring and clever man who was a real survivor of the Titanic! Because Mr. Daniel, Bucky, the kennel boy-Finn, and the dogs are nice to Sam, the reader is more concerned and interested in those characters.
I also really liked how this novel was arranged. For every chapter was a name, date, place, and time which did two things. First of all, it made the novel much more believable since the dates, places, and times were real, researched facts. Secondly, the titles on the chapters helped to summarize the chapter. For example, Chapter 8 was called "Not Without My Dog" (the Titanic was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean) with the subtitle "Monday, April 15, 1912, 12:30 a.m." From the date and title you can tell that Sam wouldn't leave the Titanic without Star and that the Titanic had not sunk yet. Another chapter was called "On the Carpathia" which told the reader that the survivors were picked up by another ship and would survive to tell the story of the Titanic.
Another reason that I recommend this book is because after the wonderful, though fictional, story of Sam and Star, there are 14 pages of non-fiction material about the Titanic. The mini-information bank includes the map of the Titanic's voyage, a timeline for the massive ship, a four-page long diagram of the Titanic, facts, mysteries, survivors, and victims of the Titanic. The listed survivors and victims were characters in White Star who interacted with Sam. It was fascinating to read about those characters' actual lives and accounts. Also, the map of the Titanic itself helped me to better visualize where Sam, Star, and Bucky were on the ship.
In conclusion, because of many elements, this novel was exceptionally realistic. The characters were real and believable just like the plot, and the whole story was very well developed. This is a fairly easy read that is full of adventure, friendship, and dogs and is a very enjoyable book. I recommend it to anyone who likes dogs or a fast read about friendship and courage on the memorable voyage of the Titanic.

5 comments about Irish Red.
- Irish Red is known as a Jim Kjelgaard classic, it is supposed to be one of his best books ever, I feel the same way about it. Irish Red contains not only suspense but it also has plenty of action. Old Red has fathered a few pups to Sheila and Mike is the runt. What he lacks in size he makes up for in spirit and effort. Although he may lose a pig, and get into the garbage, Mike helps to save the day. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who thinks that the outdoors is an interesting place, if not you probably won't enjoy it. This book is for people of all ages to enjoy, so read on.
- I myself have not read this book, BUT my ten year old daughter has read it about 20 times! She keeps coming back to this book and she is a very avid reader having read many books including all of the Harry Potter and the Red Wall series.
- I read this book when I was about 10 years old and I still remember how much I loved it! I read several of his books and somehow remembered (25 years later) that the author's first name was Jim and last name started with a K. Now that my kids are learning to read, I wanted to share with them some of my favorite books, so I did a search and found it quite easily. I don't remember the details of the book, but the fact that I remember it fondly after all these years, is quite a testament!!!
- Some authors just have a knack for bringing a natural setting to life, and Jim Kjelgaard is one of those rare authors.
The story is a by-the-numbers tales of survival in the wild, pitting the initially-inept Mike and woodsman Danny up against a host of natural dangers, including a mammoth snowstorm and a bloodthirsty Puma.
The writing is clean and simple, and the events are exciting enough to hold the interest of the reader.
I think that Kjelgaard has written better books in this vein, but it is nice to see some continuity between these kinds of books. The relationship of Irish Red to the ever-popular Big Red lets us experience Big Red all over again.
I do recommend this book, but not as an introduction to this author. Snow Dog or Big Red are better books to cut your teeth on; this book is a nice return to an established world.
- REVIEWED BY: Wayne Walker
Back in late 2002 or early 2003, I read Kjelgaaard's Big Red out loud to our boys and we enjoyed it. Irish Red is a sequel. Danny Pickett and his father Ross live in a cabin on the Wintapi estate of Mr. Haggin to help him raise Irish setters for hunting and show. After Big Red was injured while killing the bear Old Majesty, Danny and Ross own him, but his mate Sheila and their four puppies still belong to Mr. Haggin. However, Haggin's nephew, John Price, has come to convince his uncle to raise English setters instead. Big Red's son Mike is the best hunter, but when Danny and his father try everything to train him, Mike seems to be a bone-headed, self-willed misfit and loses a birding contest to one of the English setters.
While Haggin is away, Danny and Ross are supposed to work with Joe Williams, the new trainer for the English setters, but the two quit after a major disagreement on how to treat the dogs and move back into their old cabin off the Haggin estate. However, as winter draws near, Mike escapes the kennel and makes his way to the Picketts' place. While Danny and Mike are out trapping marten on Tower Head, Danny is hit by a falling tree during an early blizzard and is in danger of freezing to death. Will Mike have enough sense to do anything to help save him? And will the dog ever make a good hunter?
The book is a heart-warming story that is characterized by perceptive writing and an interesting plot. It leaves the message that a person can do just about anything if he or she really tries hard enough. Those who like dog stories should relish it. The only warning is that Kjelgaard is not above using an occasional "h---" or "d---" word. Personally, I would prefer that authors not use such language at all, especially in books for children, but to be honest I have seen a lot worse in much of what passes for children's literature today. The story of Big Red's descendants continues in Outlaw Red.
