  1. Is this Rebecca Brown the same Rebecca Brown MD that wrote "He Came to Set the Captives Free", "Becoming a Vessel of Honor", and "Unbroken Curses".? It is important for me to have this information. Thank you.

  2. As I began this book, I was enthralled by the writing - moving easily between the real, the fantastic, the medieval, the fairy-world. The Doberman of the title both is and isn't; is frendly, protective, sadistic leading one ever closer to understanding the phobias of the unnamed narrator.

Unfortunately, from my perspective, as the Dobermans take over, the writer (not the narrator) looses control and a novel with great promise goes plop!

I will perhaps try another piece by the author as there was much promise. I understand why some will enjoy (and defend) this book. But with so many books to read and so little time to read them, I can't recommend this.

  3. When is a dog not a dog? When it is anything and everything else. In The Dogs, Rebecca Brown uses the totality of dogness--their bodies, habits, history, and varied relationships to human beings--as a literary tool through which to examine the depths of a tormented human mind. What struck me most about this work is that by making the dogs as real or unreal as she wanted, Brown gave herself a huge range in which to explore her subject.

The first chapter of The Dogs is entitled "Dog, in which is illustrated Immanence." Immanence means "having existence only in the mind." At first, this might sound limiting, but with The Dogs, Brown shows us just how vast the mind can be.

  4. Rebecca Brown's books are challenging - they are beautiful and worth it. The bad reviews that she receives on here tell me nothing more than the writers weren't immediately gratified and lost their patience anticipating the climax or clarity spelled out for them in no uncertain terms, unaware that reading is a process in and of itself and that the most successful writers do not always tell you exactly what to think and when - some books reveal themselves slowly. Enjoy her words, the sentences, and the structure no matter how unconventional, without trying to rush her to a conclusion or a resolution because if that's all you're looking for you'll be left wanting. These are not feel good vignettes and are pretty moving. Reading Brown is an immensely satisfying experience for me.

  1. I felt this book was very informative. It gave me informative insight toward the purchase and care of a doberman.

  2. I found the information presented was good and well thought out. I think this book is more applicable to the potential owner then the current owner, because of the training methods supported in the book. this may be due to when the book was written, but does not jive with most of the current literature that I have been reading.

  3. Rather small, it barely skims the surface of what an owner needs to know: is a dobe the right dog for you, food, bedding, accessories, temperament. You won't get much else out of it. If someone's on the fence about whether or not to get a doberman, this book MIGHT be worth buying.

  4. Because of the outrageous profit margin, this is another "make a quick buck" dog book that has saturated the shelves of our innocent pet stores everywhere. The text reads as if it were cut and pasted from a sixties encyclopedia entry, with "your Doberman" inserted instead of "your dog". There isn't ANY uniqueness, ingenuity, nor insight between the covers of this book; Inane prattle, serving only to reinforce the ego and purse of the "published" author, not the education of the starved masses.

    Actual quote:
"Exactly how much of a dog's behavior is inherited and how much is learned is a debate that remains unsettled, except to say that both avenues of exchange seem very much involved" (Gudas 62)
What does this actually say? Nothing!

This review refers to the first version

  5. I found this book to be way too brief. It shows no depth when it comes to the information of Dobermans, and it quickly leaves the Doberman idea behind and just states basic first aid medication that every book of this same brand has. I bought this at a pet store when purchasing toys for my own Doberman. There was obviously no real, genuine thought put into this book, and I myself, though unarticulate and not at all skilled in writing, could display more quality information instead of a brief overview of a Doberman. I personally would not have purchased this book if I had even skimmed through the pages.

  1. This book is great for people new to the Doberman. It gives an overview of the breed's history, temperment, care and training requirements. It touches on the different activities you can participate in with your Doberman and lists addresses to contact for more info. The health care chapter briefly explains all the major diseases and parasites that you must have your dog vaccinated against. For more indepth training methods for the novice, however, it is best to consult a specific manual on the subject. Overall the book is one of the better I have read on any breed!

  2. I was surprised to search Doberman Pinscher on Amazon.com and find out Faye had written a book! Faye knows Doberman Pinschers quite well and was co-breeder of one of my males, Sherlucks Pan Am Machu Picchu. I was skeptical but decided to purchase the book. Faye is an excellent author and really gets into grooming and health plus training, what to expect from your Doberman and about every aspect of canine ownership. Having several books already on Dobermans I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Strauss's book. It reads well and is well written. I'd recommend it to both new and experienced Doberman owners. It's never too late to teach an old dog, or owner for that manner, a new trick or two! I am now going to buy a second book for a friend as well.

  3. Being a Doberman enthousiast, I read every dobe book that I can get my hands on. The author is a well known and successful breeder and judge, but I was dissapointed that this book was not filled with more personal insight into the breed. If you know absolutely nothing about how to raise a dog, this would be a good book. I did enjoy some of the pictures, however.

  4. If I could, I would give this book a 3.5. The book is well written, and if you are new to Dobermans, it is a very nice book to add to you collection. Though to anyone experienced, it does not add any personal insight, and nothing extremely new or exciting. Overall it reads nicely, and has a nice sound to it. I was pleasantly surprised, as this is one of the few good Doberman books I have come across. For anyone who is interested or new to the breed, this is definetly a good choice.

  5. Very good information and a must read for potential owners and new owners of Doberman Pinschers.

  1. This is a very interesting autobiographical book about the author at a crucial decade in his life journey. It's a period of life that he shares with a dog, which why I bought the book and read it. It was very enjoyable to read and I'm always happy to see it on the shelf at the bookstore because I know others will buy and read it as well. This self-taught author is a remarkable person.

  2. I finished this book last night and was sorry to have it end. I had really enjoyed looking forward to picking up where I had left off the previous reading. This story was well written because it was from the heart. An honest look at oneself by a man who was redeemed and given a second chance by his love for a dog. His deepening faith over a long period of time, as a Roman Catholic, was beautifully depicted, as was his love for his mother and his wonderfully supportive sister, Mary. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves dogs; has an addiction; or wants to read an inspiring story of increased faith by a very beautiful author. Hope you keep writing more for us!

  3. I am a big fan of autobiographies and Thomas tells his story like no other. Thomas shares his intimate feelings and how he overcame his downward descent with the help of a puppy. Anyone who has been down and out knows that sometimes you need something to grab as your life preserver, for Thomas it was his puppy Martin. Anyone who deals with alcoholism, wether in their own family or within themselves, will benefit from reading this story of triumph and overcoming the clutches of alcohol and how it effects us and everyone around us. An inspiring read you will not soon forget.

  4. As an animal lover and dog owner, I was drawn to this book. As a mental health professional who regularly works with people struggling with substance abuse issues, the book also appealed to me from that aspect. I completed my Master's Thesis on Pet Therapy, so I already know the powerful benefits one could get from pets. This book confirmed it all for me. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I laughed, I cried, I thouroughly enjoyed the book!

  5. This book was recommended in the Best Friends Sanctuary publication. It was compared to "Marley & Me". I was disappointed that there were very few details about Martin, the dog. Martin was a crucial part of the story, yet we never really got to know Martin. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a good dog story. The story is more about the author's struggle with alcoholism and his relationships with women. It was just not what I was looking for.

  1. Good read, enjoyable, but I have to complain on two points:
Sure, Stone Barrington makes a cameo appearance, for no reason at all except that we like him and he's easy on the eye. BUT - he's there to buy a plane, tail number November 1 2 3 Tango Foxtrot. Then in the end, when the bad guys are escaping, they escape in a plane with the tail number - you guessed it - November 1 2 3 Tango Foxtrot. Did they steal Stone's plane? Was the mysterious John actually Stone Barrington? NO! Wow, what a great plot twist was missed here. Or maybe Mr. Woods just likes that number - maybe he has a plane, too, with the tail number - well, you get the point.
The other big boo-boo was having the bad guy go to Ham's for a drink, and nobody thought to get his fingerprints off the glass. Well, he could've been wearing gloves, but you'd think someone would notice THAT.
All in all a good read, doesn't require a lot of mental investment on the readers' part, and a fairly good description of Florida's Treasure Coast.
    C@.

  2. What a terrible story, was unable to finish it, Stuart Woods was at one time a very good author, but when he started with Holly and Stone, he in effect quit writing, this is about a militant band of right wingers robbing banks and oh by the way just had to kill Holly's intended just an hour before the wedding which didn't seem to break Holly up all that much as she still has her best friend, her dog and her father which she has conversations with regarding three somes and their sex lives in general, Signet books and Stuart Woods should both be ashamed of themselves for putting this on the market.

  3. I was so excited after reading "Orchid Beach" to read part two of the Holly Barker Novels "Orchid Blues". The first 10 chapters were good and kept me interested, however, after that this book just dragged on and on and on. I mean I thought the novels were about Holly Barker not her father Ham. This book focused more on Ham and him investigating a group of individuals than it did on Holly and her investigative skills. I hope this book doesn't deter me from reading other Holly Barker novels. There were some pretty good points in the book though, some parts I actually really enjoyed, esepcially how Mr. Woods tied in Stone Barrington to this particular story. I loved that! Other than that I felt like this book was a really long read for me and I'd actually have to say it bored me most of the time. I have the next book Blood Orchid, I do hope its a much better book than this one. I'll give the series another chance.

  4. Light reading, rather boring, poor character development, defintiely not in line with his other writing.

  5. Grabs your attention from page one!! Concise writing, good flow of events. Believable - well, most of it but it is fiction, after all!! I feel you can't go wrong with Stuart Woods for an enjoyable read.

  1. Great guide for anyone thinking about sharing their life with this noble breed. Helped me to decide this dog is a breed I hope to live with soon.

  2. If you have or are planning on getting a Doberman puppy, this book should be required reading. It does not go too into depth on the subject of raising a Doberman as it is a subject that requires thousands of pages, but it does give you a great "first look" at raising a Doberman. If you have researched Dobermans excessively, this is not the book for you as it will not tell you anything new, but if you need a good introduction to caring for this noble breed it is a great read.

  1. This is a very good book. It really surprised me. All the methods sound very good, and will hopefully work. (iam getting a doberman in 2 weeks). I suggest you peoplr give this book a try.

  2. This was the perfect book. There were lots of photos and extra tid-bits throughout, plus all of the information I needed for choosing and training my Dobe puppy. It was very thorough, but easy to read.

  1. I found that this book has lots of descriptive pictures and answers all questions that I had about the breed. The book elaborates on thorough history of the breed, standards and care, including the care of an elderly Doberman. This is a very helpful handbook about the Doberman breed.

  2. This is a great book for any one who currently owns a doberman or is wanting to get a doberman. I highly recommend you read this book. It covers everything from training to proper diet to health care for the animal. It also gives you a nice history of the doberman, and the photos in the book are gorgeous. Yes I am a doberman lover and breeder, and after many years of searching for a good reference book I have found it, this is the one. It doesn't cover 100% everything, but it gives you a lot of pertinent and necessry information.

  3. Good, thorough history of the development of the breed. Great pictures. Could have gone into more detail on temperament.

  4. Excellent book that gives a mostly objective overview of an amazing breed. Not the right book if your looking for a detailed training guide but can be helpful for someone researching their next pet.

  5. Excellent content but the photos are not the best. Most photos are in black and white. The information though is top notch. Would recommend this book highly for all!!!!!
