  1. Willy the Chihuahua lives at an animal hospital, because his back legs don't work. He dreams of having a home and a family and playing with other animals and chasing sticks. Then one day, a pretty lady comes and takes him home with her! Willy meets his new brother, another Chihuahua named Sweet Pea, and his new sister, a fluffy silver cat named Marshmallow.

Willy still can't walk or run, and has to use his front legs to drag himself from place to place, until his new mother tries some different ideas to help him get around--with often humorous results.

Filled with bright, gorgeous watercolor illustrations that even pre-readers can appreciate, HOW WILLY GOT HIS WHEELS is the story of a loveable and courageous little dog. Written for age levels 5-10, it's a book that everyone from toddlers to adults can enjoy on many levels. Authors Turner and Mohler have done a tremendous job of showing life from a physically disabled viewpoint without preaching or patronizing. Here's hoping we will get to hear more of Willy's adventures in the near future!

Kimberly Borrowdale Under the Covers Book Reviews

  2. I find that the best inspirational tales come from real life - and this book is no exception. I saw the owner of Willy (yes, there actually is a real Willy) on Animal Planet and knew I just had to buy the book. It is as charming as expected and not just because of spunky little Willy, whose back legs are paralyzed and who has to learn to "walk" again, with the help of a special wheel-cart. It is just as inspiring to read of his owner's attempts to find a way to get him walking - using everything from acupuncture to helium balloons to hold up the back legs. A great read for the entire family!

  3. I read the book after hearing about it on tv, and have sent it to my great nieces. You see I am like Willy I am also in a wheelchair. I have never gotten to see my great-nieces in person and hope that when they reed the book and their mom explains to them that I am (like Willy) in a wheelchair that they cn understand why I haven't been able to come see them (they are in Oregon and I am in Missouri). Willy is a courageous pup and we can all learn from him how to face life's adversities.

  4. This is the perfect book to teach empathy to children. The kindness that author Deborah Turner demonstrates towards her pet dog can be extended to humankind as well. We need to accept and love animals (and people) despite their weaknesses and frailties, focusing instead on their strengths and the love that comes back to us.

  5. This book that will lift your spirits and warm your heart!

Willy was once an abandoned, handicapped chihuahua puppy dumped on the streets in a cardboard box.

Thanks to his adopter, who discovered the world of wheelchairs for dogs, Willy learned to fly!

Adults and children adore this book, and it is especially significant to the handicapped who share a special bond with Willy.

Make sure you also read How Willy Got His Wings

  1. The books arrived before we even expected, Though some were thought used, they all looked brand new.
The 8 year old birthday party will be a hit with this party favor!

  2. Calvin Coolidge's 4th Grade Leaders are Readers Book Club read this book and say:
Aaron - My favorite part was when Chloe was being chased by mountain lions! It was very suspenseful!
Caitlyn - The story was very adventurous and funny. It also teaches you about Mexico and their history.
Claire - It has a good moral lesson. Rachel told her Aunt Viv what really happened instead of trying to hide the truth.
Felicia- I rated it a 5 because it was funny! I liked when Chloe was trying to get a churro and some big dogs tried to stop her. She stood up for herself and was very brave!
Jamil - I liked when Chloe jumped off the train.
Olubiyi - The publisher made a mistake and named two chapters Chapter 4!
Myles - I liked when Chloe spent the night in the park and stood up to the tough dogs. I liked that the tough dogs have a weak spot for Chloe and it's funny when they get stepped on by a girl!

  3. The novel, written skillfully as worded for junior readers (at what probably is literate junior high school level of reading proficiency, suitable also ofr reading aloud to even younger children), retells the adventures of Chloë, Papi (both chihuahuas), Delgado (German shepherd) and other critters of canine and other species, based on the film of the same title. As for Chloë, the erstwhile pampered female embodiment of "chihuahua chic", she comes across more sympathetically in this novelette than in the motion picture about her adventures. The book is helpful, for those for whom it matters, in clarifying the narrative of the motion picture; especially in the action-packed conclusion of the film (but sometimes elsewhere, too), the tale whisks by so quickly that a viewer can be a bit perplexed about what exactly is happening and why. The novelette also fills in some motivation, background, and other such matters which add to one's enjoyment of the cute (for some viewers, cloying so) film. The colour photos of still images from the film are well chosen and reproduced at good quality, the paperback front cover presenting, as the image chosen, one of the visually striking posters which had served to publicise the movie. The rest of this Amazon user's review adapts comments about the film to the context of the novel.

Many cinephiles have loathed the film, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", so probably they will react similarly to the published form of this chihauhua saga, but, dudes, loosen up! Sure, the story is more than a little "sappy", but take some time out to be "sappy and happy" viewing the movie or reading this novelette adaptation! Don't heckle these hounds! The adventures of these chihuahuas, other dogs, and of assorted animals is a delight, especially for those who have a "tender spot" for "man's best friend"!

This tale never was meant to appeal to the viewer's sophistication. On the other hand, it is not any sort of "chihuahua exploitation fiction (or film)", either. The touches of New Age mysticism, fortunately lightly and quirkily applied, may bother some Christian Fundamentalists readers without any sense of humour, but one can appreciate those elements of the film, and even more so of the novel retelling of it, as being as much gentle satire as anything else.

My favourite hounds in this California-Mexico romp are Papí, Chloë's ardent male canine admirer and one very determinedly valiant chihuahua, and Delgado, the down-on-his-luck, butch German shepherd hound who comes to the rescue of, and does various acts of kindness for, Chloë, even when he misinterprets the reasons for Chloë's second disappearance. Then, too, who cannot but love the thronging hoarde of chihauhuas among the ruins of an ancient indigenous Aztec human-canine culture? Seeing or reading about Chloë trying to find the mighty voice of her "inner chihuahua" (as opposed to pampered pet yips and whimpering) with the aid of the leader, Monte, and female chihuahua spirit guide, Margarita, of this pack of chihuahuas is very amusing; I wish that this bit of animal humour had been as further extended in the movie as it is in the novel!

May a Spanish-language edition appear on the market, the more welcome that it would be for such exaltation of Latino and amerindian heritage! This novel, recounting the story in English, like the English-language film on which it is based, is a pack of fun, and not just for children, the English style not being unduly too basic to impede adult pleasure in this tale of tail-wagging fun and mock heroics!

  1. Cute pictures. But that's about it. I found nothing usefull for me in the book. The best thing I ever learned about Chihuahua's is they are dramatic. My other dog snapped at her and made a bump on her head from doing that, I thought I was going to loose her for sure. She's fine, happy and healthy as ever and I don't over react when she squeeks out when she's hurt.

  2. Awesome book. Full of information that is presented in a fun and easy to read format. If you have a Chihuahua, this is a bargain. Less than $5 on Amazon.

  3. I am very pleased with this little book. It is an easy read with lots of good information. I read it from cover to cover in less than an hour. Love the pictures. I am about to pick up my new pup and there was lots of good advice between the covers.

  4. This (as all Barrons) dog book was very informative for us us my Husband has never before owned a chihuahua, and needs to learn as much as possible.
I enjoyed reading things I did not know about this breed.

  5. the book has all the information I needed to get going with my wife's 3 chihuahua puppies. Actually all the info I needed

  1. I did enjoy the content of this book, but the pictures dipict chihuahuas that are not to standard...

  2. As an owner of many chis I have found this book to be of great value to me. There are 154 pages of chihuahua information and lots of pics depicting all sizes and colors of chis(except the merle pattern!) Granted, not all pics follow the breed standard, but not all puppies are perfect either.

Has a good chapter on health problems common to chis, however it did not mention cryptorchidism which is common in the male, especially if they are line bred, and did not have much info on pyometra which can quickly become fatal in an unspayed female.

The chapter on breeding is pretty extensive for a book not devoted to the subject of only breeding and the genetics sections is simple to understand, but very informative and worth learning if you intend to bred.

Highly recommended for a first time owner, any one wanting to know about the chi or for an owner that would just like a good read about their faithful little friend.

  3. Even as a new owner of a Chihuahua, I know there has to be better books out there than this one. The information in this book isn't anything more than information you can find for yourself simply by doing a little online research. The pictures are not impressive and feature less than average dogs. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided to purchase this book (instead of the other titles) but I wish I had taken the time to check it out at a bookstore in town before going through the trouble of purchasing, waiting and then returning. If you are a new owner of a Chihuahua (or even a "veteran") simply search online. You'll find the same information.

  4. Great book in teaching us about our pup. Answers lots of questions people ask us about the Chi breed, and helps us understand why she does what she does!

  5. Nice book, very detailed, well written...If you just got a puppy, this is the book for you.

  1. Before we got our new chihuahua baby, I had ordered this to give me some insight to the breed & this book exceeded all my expectations. I constantly go back to this. From potty training a puppy to senior care & all the stages in between. This one really is the only chihuahua book you will need.

  2. This book is thorough, and easy to follow, giving good suggestios for caring for training and keeping your chihuahua pup or adult dog happy and healthy.

  3. Everything you need in a book.
Thnig is, when everyone sees my chihuahua, they fear him to be mean. He's not just a butterball.
But this book helps you with them. Pros cons and how to be a better owner for your new found pet.

  4. This book was a stocking stuffer and the book is easy to read with good suggestions. I give it three barks

  5. The Everything Chuhuahua book is a great adition to the bookshelves of this breeds owners or to anyone who is interested in learning a thing or two about these lovable dogs. Filled with intersting facts and stories about the raising and training of chihuahuas, this books makes sure to keep you entertained. A great part about this books is the small icons throughout each section that either tell you warnings for this breed, facts, tips, and questions/anwsers. These icons help the reader to jump quickly to what they are interested in reading. The only downside that I found in this book is the lack of information about when dogs are in season and the breeding process. Otherwise this book is filled with basic chuhuahua knowledge that will inspire many to truly care for their chihuahua.

  1. I used this book as research prior to bringing home a chihuahua puppy and a guide book after we brought her home.
This book has proven to be a valuable tool in training and gaining knowledge as to the mannerism's and behaviors that is unique to the chihuahua breed. I feel that our pets loving and friendly nature is in part due to information we found in this book. Its easy to read, somewhat entertaining, and well researched. A must have for those new to raising chihuahuas.

  2. Was very pleased with the service I received from Bookcloseouts. The book was new and was received within 7 days. I would use this source again. Very satisfied. R.Tate

  3. Great buy. Book was in excellent condition - just like new. Delivery was fast. Couldn't ask for better!

  4. This book has everything you need to know to properly care for your chihuahua. It doesn't end after puppyhood either, and instead follows through the years with different fun activities for you and your dog, different nutritional needs, and how to make sure your pet is properly cared for at all times to make you chihuahua the best it can be.

  5. I just got my first dog, a 14 month old chihuahua. I bought the book because of the excerpts that I read and thought it would be really helpful. It was to a certain point. Like it said, it is for dummies and not as in depth as I would like. I have a friend who's very experienced with dogs in general and was able to tell me everything I needed to know. The book just confirmed the same so I didn't find it as helpful as I probably would have if I had no one helping me. I also think it was focused more toward puppies rather than an adult chihuahua. Given that, it would be fine for a beginner. It's easy to read and follow.

  1. My husband and I can't get enough of Skippyjon Jones; we just hope our babies enjoy the stories as much as we do when they are old enough.

  2. I was really anxious to get this book:
    1) because our school kids love Skippyjon Jones and always want to sing along
    2) They are studying Egypt right now

I read it to myself and decided that maybe it was just me that the kids would still enjoy it.
I read it to the kids with as much enthusiasm as I could muster up, only to come to the end and having them say "we don't get it" and "can you read us the original Skippyjon now?" They didn't even want to sing half of the songs since they just didn't make sense to a kid. While there are some details on Egypt, they aren't presented in a way that makes it interesting to them.

Go with the original and maybe SkippyJon in the Doghouse, but don't buy this one.

  3. My 4 year old told me that he wanted a 'Skippy Jon Jones' book. He told me the teacher read it to his class. I couldn't find the original, so I bought this one. When I read it, I didnt understand it and thought it was a little bizarre and too out there, especially for a 4 year old. I figured maybe I was tired and left it in his bookshelf for another time. My husband read it to my son a couple of days later. He came downstairs and said to me "that was the WEIRDEST children's book I have ever read". I am still going to try and purchase the original, I just think the author might have been drinking when she wrote this one, lol.

  4. My 8 year old can recite this story word for word and I can probably do most of it. It became a favourite in our house the moment we read it. The illustrations are as funny as the text. A classic kids kitty book.

  5. I LOVE this series of books and so do children--especially those who know Spanish. They are SOOOOO surprised to see how it is mixed in with the English and in such a funny way. The CD's that go with the book are so good that I don't even try to read the books to the kids. The author does such a marvelous job of reading it with all the special accents, SINGING, and funny stuff I could never accomplish on my own--and I am a teacher!

  1. We've read Skippyjon books in the past and loved them....boy, something is WRONG with this book. It seems as if the author is trying waaaay too hard to stay on the Skippyjon bandwagon.

The book uses three times the amount of Spanglish than the original, making it hard to read aloud, and that's coming from someone with a fair share of Spanglish under her belt.

The plot makes no sense. It is horrible and almost impossible to follow. The dinosaurs are dancing and then stop drop and roll to extinction? What? Why not make them stop drop and become hair stylists, it would have been just about as easy to follow.

I cringe when my child pulls this book off the shelf and now tend to skip over half of this horrible writing just to make it understandable for my child.

Don't waste your time-- go read the original Skippy book.

  2. This is not an enjoyable book to read and it's just plain weird if you ask me! I can't wait to get rid of it!!!! I'm shocked by some of the reviews that people loved this book! I just don't see it.

  3. This book had funny words and made my whole family laugh. All the big dinosaurs were very silly and funny. The funny Chihuahua was the very very best. Skippyjon Jones is the best book I ever read. I am going to buy all the rest of these books.

  4. We are huge fans of Skippyjon Jones in our house and will continue to collect the whole series. The books are very funny and very cute.

  1. We are big Skippyjon Jones fans in this house but this book simply did not live up to our expectations. The story line is difficult to follow, one comment says if you study the illustrations things make sense, my children love to linger on pages looking at the illustrations but this book simply jumps from one scenario to the next and is confusing at times and not easy to follow. My six year old asked "how long more until the end?". A fun series to read, this book however, was just a dud.

  2. Skippyjon Jones is so hilarious that my entire family was laughing, including 11,9,7,4,33&34. Very well done!

  3. Children, Grandchildren, Parents and Grandparents will love these adorable stories ... so fun to read!

  4. Skippyjon Jones is a Siamese cat who seems to think he is a chihuahua. He likes to visit Mexico and have adventures in his bedroom, speak Spanish and they are very interesting. A great little book for naughty, but dreamy children.
