- What a wonderful and beautifully put together book! I know the author is very knowledgable, but this was even more then I expected.
The organization seemed to flow very well and the pictures were beautiful. This is a must have for all Bull Terrier owners, perspective owners and dog lovers.
Thank you Mrs. Alexander for all of your hard work to give us this great book!
- my husband and I had been thinking of getting a Bull Terrier. From the beginning of this book, we kept learning more and more about this wonderful, spunky breed. Well detailed information to include pictures of the different colors of breed, health issues, needs, wants, even showed a picture of the best toy for this dog: a kong. Recommend for anyone who is interested in this breed whether they're buying one soon or just want more knowledge on this "clown dog" :)
- For the price, this book gives a fair amount of info on the breed and some great pictures, good beginning book when first learning on the breed, definately recomend.
- A MUST read for anyone considering this breed. A wonderful and very informative book. Very helpful to me in understanding many behaviors of this particular breed, although too much emphasis on AKC opinions, functions etc. Not everyone is interested in the almighty AKC opinions and standards for showing. Sometimes a pet is just that, a beloved pet, not a show dog!

- This book is a must read! I teach in a school in a low socio-economic area. Not surprisingly, pit bull myths are common here, and many children own or want one. I constantly lend this book to students, and it really opens their eyes. This is just the most informative, interesting book on the breed out there. I appreciate that Diane Jessup doesn't weigh down the language with a lot of dog training jargon, and the action photos keep even my struggling readers interested. I reference the book countless times in discussions with people who do not understand the breed (especially those that only think they do).
- I agree with the review by T. Roberts (tei321). I was hoping for pictures of family pit bulls, playing, sleeping, having fun, looking beautiful and cute, illustrating the loving and playful aspects of these dogs. But almost all of the pictures in the book are of pedigreed pit bulls in show poses, and far too many have cropped ears, I'm assuming for show purposes. So many pit bulls are waiting for homes in shelters and in foster care, many of these being euthanized when their time runs out, but the author emphasizes choosing a dog from a breeder instead of adopting. She even recommends against adopting shelter pit bulls in one chapter, on the grounds that something must be wrong with a dog who has been surrendered to a shelter. Dogs are surrendered to shelters because of a mismatch between dog and owner, but a shelter dog can be perfect for a different owner, as my shelter pit (7 years old when adopted) demonstrates. I would expect that someone who has worked in animal control would know this. The glorification of the Colby family's breeding of fighting pit bulls is shocking, considering what problems dogfighting and overpopulation are. Maybe an updated version of the book would not be so positive about pit bull breeding.
- It was a gift I made to a Friend who loves Pit Bulls and He was so happy about the book. He told me this book is superb and He using it as a personal guide.
- The was a very informative book all in all. I thought it would be better though. It talks about the history of the pit bull..the real history not many people know. That's about all it is worth. The information on the different sports was ok. my pet peeves on the book were mostly about the fact that the author had to make other breeds look bad in order to make the pit bull look good the pit bulls looks good all on it's own with out hashing other breeds.
1.I was hoping at some point the pictures would show alot more pictures of pit bulls with natural ears. some of the crops she showed where porrly done and way to short.
2. Someone who is trying to help pit bulls suggest to buy a dog and not adopt. Not all dogs from shelters are bead and not all people give up they dogs because they are bad dogs.
3. While colbys dogs may be great now she likes to rehash the fact that they come from great fighting lines. She is trying to tell people her dogs are great but that they are fighters as well.
4. she also tells you to buy a dog that is in-bred. She says dog bred to different parents that are not related are mongrels.
it was a good book but could have been better.
- If you want to learn a lot about the American pit bull terrier, this is the book to pick up.
This book talks about every aspect of the breed, starting with its history as a hunting and bull handling dog. It touches on related breeds, common "pit bull myths," and the modern American pit bull terrier today. It also talks about the specifics of acquiring and keeping a pit bull, without turning into a generic book on dogs or dog care.
The book is also full of nice color pictures (vintage and modern) of a wide variety of dogs. The photos alone are worth the price of the book in my opinion.
It was written by the incomparable Dianne Jessup (check out her website at [...] ) If you're interested in pit bull dogs you will enjoy this book!

- Mackenzie and Cash were the best of friends. Mackenzie's Dad had brought the little runt home for the boy. From that moment on the two were inseparable.
People in the neighborhood were afraid of Cash. Even though he was gentle and smart, everyone just saw that he was a pit bull. In fact, the city was in the process of banning pit bulls saying that they were unsuitable as pets and dangerous.
One day, Mackenzie's Dad did the unthinkable. He took Cash away and just dumped him. Mackenzie was devastated. How was the little dog with the big heart going to survive on the streets? What would Mackenzie do without his best friend? Most importantly, would these two friends ever find each other again.

- David Harris, no stranger to the world of the Bully breeds, has written a wonderful book on these ever popular breeds - American Pit Bull, American Staff, Boston Terrier, Bull Terrier, the Mini Bull Terrier plus the Staffordshire BT. Excellent text that covers not only the great points of these dogs, but some things that one should be aware of before rushing out to buy one of these breeds. Beautiful photographs and an excellent section by William Secord on the bully breeds in art. If you have an interest in any of these breeds, this book belongs in your library!
- Another great book from David Harris. If placed on the coffee table, it will be of interest to all lookers. The photographs are wonderful. The text is simple and informative, but the color photos will keep anyone's interest!
- What are the real 'bully dogs' and the truth about the breeds? This examines six bull-and-terrier dogs, offering photos, narrative by a judge and bulky breed historian, and considering the history and development of these special breeds. It also includes the author's life with a bully, considers new breeds being developed, and surveys its impact on competitions and beyond. Highly recommended for any library strong in dog breeds or competition history.

4 comments about Training Your Pit Bull (Training Your Dog Series).
- I was able to follow the instructions for the training in this book step by step. I have been training my dogs in a more old fashion way. But my dogs and I seem to enjoy the fun and results. I have 5 Pit bulls they learn quickly already had the Basics down, but now im getting into the cool tricks and the dogs get a treat now I didn't give one before. I rate this book 4 out of 5 its a must read.
- I bought this book AFTER I got a pitbull. The book even teaches you how to choose a pitbull, so a small part of it was not useful for me. I didn't finish it yet, I bought it recently, but I must say I already learned a lot from it. Stuff normal people told me to do, were not allowed. Like putting my dog with its nose in its "dirt" if he does it on the carpet, or playing tug of war with it. Well, A LOT! I truly recommend it.
- Excellent item... however it does not state what is the best age to start your training. So far i think i have a good buy
- I guess I was mistakenly expecting the book to impart some great wisdom upon me or something, but 90 percent of it is about the history of pitbulls, where they came from, and the bad image they have received. there's a partial chapter about actual dog training, which basically just says that repitition is the key to success...kinda already knew that...so it was a complete waste of money, I let my kids take scissors to the book and they made a poster with the pictures that were in it, since that was the best part of the entire thing anyways.

5 comments about The Pit Bull Placebo: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Aggression.
- OH MY GOD, this was one of the best books I've read. This book should be mandatory reading in schools so young kids can understand the reason why some dogs bite, since obviously their parents dont explain it to them. And it also just goes to show you how ridiculous our politicians are when they have FACTS in front of them about dog bite cases but still rely on the media for their information. This book totally opened up my eyes to the reasons and causes for dog bites that I was unaware of.THANK YOU,THANK YOU Karen Delise for writting this AMAZIMG book.I hope millions of people will read it.
- Great book for a long history of how the media has influenced the perception of dogs long before pit bulls. It doesn't really get into pit bulls until the last few chapters. But it's a good read if you are interested in the media's treatment of dogs over the past hundred years.
- Before the Pit Bull it was the Rottweiler. Before the Rottweiler it was the Doberman. Before the Doberman it was the German Shepherd and so on.
The truth is ANY dog can bite, and all do. The truth is ANY dog can be trained for aggression. The truth is ANY dog can be fodder for the media's insatiable appetite for tabloid TV and sensationalism.
Karen Delise has written what should become a must have on any dog trainers book shelf or in the library of anyone who cares about and respects dogs.
Here is an open ledger of the real Pit Bull. Here is a book that honestly exposes what every dog trainer and behaviourist should know - What our dogs do and how they behave is entirely due to how we interact, train and socialise with dogs.
This educative volume should be mandatory reading for every student journalist.

- As a dog trainer I especially liked this honest and frank book. As a Pit Bull and Doberman owner I enjoyed the historical look into the problems of owning a "public menance". The rabid fear encouraged by the media has cost thousands of dogs to be killed for no other reason but unresponcible owners and a great lead-in on the 6:00 news. ALL dogs can bite; all dogs can kill.
- As the title says, this book should be a must read for all dog owners and law makers and even people looking at getting a dog. I'm not even finished with the book and I've learned a lot I didn't know, like the fact that all the garbage the media is spouting about Pit Bulls being killer, blood thirsty dogs with locking jaws is actually the garbage the dog fighters are spouting to make their dogs seem like mean and ferocious fighting/killing machines. I wish the media could see that what they are saying is the same things the dog fighters are saying and stop, but ignorance is bliss as they say. Why find out, and report, the truth when myth's and lies sell so much better. I also didn't know that almost everyone fighting to ban Pit Bull's uses the arguement that Pit Bull's are different from other dogs. Since when is my question.
I bet a lot of people would be suprised by what they'd learn if they read this book, especially about some of the dog breeds that used to be looked upon as vicious. It's very informative and I'd recommend it to anyone looking at getting a dog.

5 comments about Pit Bulls for Dummies.
- first of all, all bulldogs come from the same line (pits, english, american, etc.). What made the pits fight like they do is mixing in TERRIER BLOOD !!! Terriers are bred to hunt down little animals, rats, mice, etc. that is what they mixed with pit bulls to make them PIT BULL TERRIERS!!! I have a pit who lives with two other dogs, a cat, and a number of small rodents and birds that are our pets, and children; he is a therapy pet, a service dog, and a wonderful companion. I think you people in denver are not addressing the situation properly. Its not the breed you should be attacking, but the horrible owners who abuse them into thinking that they should attack. All the people in Denver are going to do is find another dog to use. There are plenty of other types of dogs that are much more aggresive then pits, pits are just cheaper. What about Presas or Cane Corsoes, bet you didnt check them, they are much bigger and more dangerous than pits.(Nothing aginst Presa or Corso folks, im just making a point.)
Anyone who wants a breed banned is missing the big picture, the people who are training these anamails ! The people who are training them to fight are NOT the USA's finest to say the least, THEY ARE YOUR TRUE PROBLEM ! You could make a golden or a lab attack to kill of you try hard enough! DOGS, EVEN PITS, ARE NOT BORN TO HUNT DOWN HUMAN BLOOD ! IT'S REALLY CRAPPY PEOPLE WHO MAKE THEM THAT WAY !
*my last final words are*
"All creatures on earth should be respected"
&
"No matter how poor you may be, having a dog makes you rich."
AND FINALLY- focus on the real problem, not the indivdual dog breeds, but the horrible people who train them to fight.
- I own this book and have read it several times. It makes perfect sense that these are great dogs and they have developed a bad reputation based on having bad owners. A dog is a biproduct of their owner. We have seen the same thing happen with German Shepherds, Rotts, and Dobermans. This book was very helpful and there is no bias, only truth. The American Pitbull Terrier is a wonderful family dog when properly raised and socialized.
- Dr. Coile has immense experience and expertise in raising and training dogs for numerous canine sports. She offers an easy and fun to read manual for the novice Pit Bull owner and a handy guide for the ol' timers too. Great pictures, great advice, and important facts about our breed. Looking for books on the breed? Start with this one, it's a must have.
- I OWN THIS BOOK AND I READ IT IN THREE DAYS, IT HAS EVERY THING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT A PITBULL. IT ALSO HAS A LOT OF DETAILS OF THE LITTLE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW! WHAT I REALLY LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS IT ACUALLY TELLS YOU HOW NICE PITBULLS ARE,AND HOW YOU CAN HELP THEM!!! THIS BOOK IS SO GREAT!!! IF YOU WANT A PIT BULL YOU SHOULD BUT THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!
- THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS BOOK SAYS IT ALL.
I told myself I'd never own a "pitbull". A friend at work does rescue work for this breed, and I decided to take in a foster pup. Never say never. These really are words to live by. I'm on my second foster pit, and seriously thinking of adopting one of them.(ok maybe both) This book has helped me come to that decision. I never take on ANY BREED, until I've learned what I believe is all I need to know. Don't just read a book though, talk to owners of the breed your considering too. I never knew a more cuddly, funny and amazing breed than the Pit. GO PITS !!!

5 comments about American Pit Bull Terrier Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
- Even though I knew that this dog wasn't as "mean and aggressive" as people made it seem, this book was extremely interesting and i learned many new facts. Besides being a great care-guide, it explains the breed's character and history.Everything that you would ever want to know about the American Pit Bull Terrier can be found in this book, accuratly portrayed. The book is clear on how to prevent accidental fights and that this great dog should only be owned by responsible people. Hopefully the APBT will one day gain the respect they deserve and people will know the truth about them.
- This book gives a truthful picture of APBT's. It also has exclent information on caring for this breed through it's life. I purchased it for my mother, who was nervous about the breed, before I adopted my dog. After reading the book she was looking forward to having the adition to the family come and was sharing her new found info with friends and family who had negitive reactions when hearing I was getting an APBT. An exclent book to have on hand and share with those intrested in the breed, who own the breed, and who don't know the breed.
- This book was helpful when I first got my APT a few years back. Besides teaching you the basics of taking care of him/her, it also goes into how the breed has been abused and misinterpreted. American Pitbull Terriers can be the most loyal and friendliest of dogs, if taken care of properly. (I can attest to that, being a former owner).
- The book is excellent and provides a usefull information for raise and American Pitbull Terrier
- This book is great reading for someone who is or will be a first-time APBT puppy owner. It explains the special needs of these great dogs and why they've developed a bad reputation. If you are looking for more extensive info on training and activities for you and your dog, i recommend another book.
