  1. Finally, Finally! Here is a book written in an easy down-to earth style which covers the raising of one of America's most controversial breeds of dog. Mr Fenstermacher's knowledge of this breed obviously comes from hands on experience, as he has been breeding and raising these dogs for some time. He playfully writes of his own pets and gives brilliant examples of often overlooked training methods and their desired results. In this day and age of the dreaded "Pit Bull Danger" it is gratifying to read of these fine animals as loyal and intelligent pets

  2. This short, inexpensive book realistically depicts the unique challenges and responsibilities of owning this special breed. If everyone followed his advice, we wouldn't have the negative press we do today. If I bred APBTs, I would give one to everyone who purchased a puppy from me.

  3. for someone who knows nothing or little about the breed this is a very informative book and even greater for someone who refers to the breed as a blood thristy killer who lives to fight.if it can change my fathers view on an american pit bull terrier it can change anyones!

  4. For someone who wants to get an American Pit Bull Terrier should read this book. It talks about responsible ownership and how to socialize your puppy so that it will become a good canine citizen. Although it has a whole chapter about dog-fighting which I don't like, it uses that information to explain the temperament of the breed - which is not a vicious animal like everyone says. Ofcourse pit bulls are dog-aggressive, although some live with other dogs their whole life without any incidents. They love people and strangers and are not guard dogs - in fact they love people so much that they will let a stranger in your house, take everything including the pit bull. Some pit bull owners even get other dogs like Dobermans to protect their pit bull. It might sound strange but its true. Bad breeding, dog-fighters, gangsters, and the media gave this breed a bad reputation. Before you buy a dog - read this book first. Pit bulls are only for very few people - only if you you are getting this dog as a pet, have lots of time to spend timewith them, socialize them, and have time to love them then may be you should consider this breed. Be a responsible owner!

  1. Mackenzie and Cash were the best of friends. Mackenzie's Dad had brought the little runt home for the boy. From that moment on the two were inseparable.

People in the neighborhood were afraid of Cash. Even though he was gentle and smart, everyone just saw that he was a pit bull. In fact, the city was in the process of banning pit bulls saying that they were unsuitable as pets and dangerous.

One day, Mackenzie's Dad did the unthinkable. He took Cash away and just dumped him. Mackenzie was devastated. How was the little dog with the big heart going to survive on the streets? What would Mackenzie do without his best friend? Most importantly, would these two friends ever find each other again.

  2. Dog Lost, written by Ingrid Lee, focuses on my absolute favorite breed of dog (and some's least favorite), a pit bull. I own a pit bull, as many of you have seen through the various pictures I've posted of her over the last couple of years and my husband and I are forever getting comments about us owning a "vicious dog breed." SO NOT TRUE. It's the owner, not the breed. Enough said. Anyways...Ms.Lee brings that issue alive with the help of a young boy, his abusive father, and a sweet puppy by the name of Cash.

When 11 year old Mackenzie is awoken by the throwing of a tiny puppy on his bed by his drunk, gambling addicted father, he is absolutely overjoyed. Having a puppy has been dream and he can finally have the best friend he has always wanted. His days become filled with taking care of Cash and raising her from an innocent puppy to a strong, smart, happy dog, with absolutely no help from his father who often kicks her out of his way or threatens to throw in her the street. One night, Mackenzie's day makes good on that threat and Cash is thrown out of the house, left with no family and no roof over her head. Mackenzie is devastated and Cash's little puppy heart is broken with the loss of her boy.

While Cash is just working on survival, a heated debate against pit bulls is raging in Mackenzie's town. Everyone believes the dogs are vicious and should be locked up and put down. When acts of bravery begin to occur throughout the town, all done by a pit bull, minds slowly begin to change from a negative attitude to a positive outlook for the breed and Mackenzie believes he may just know what Cash has been up to since she's been gone.

Though Dog Lost definitely doesn't have the best writing I've ever seen, it's an incredibly heartwarming story that kids are going to love, written on an issue I am very passionate about. Perfect for fans of Ann M. Martin's A Dog's Life.

  3. This was an easy read for me, so I assume it's mostly for about the 10-14 crowd. There are some tense moments that could make a younger child nervous. It's very pro-pit bull (for anyone who might be nervous about that) showing how not all pit bulls want to fight, how they are loyal and loving, and how they have a heart of gold. I liked it and was glad I bought it.

  4. I first got wind of this book at a publisher's preview back in May. When I discovered it was nominated for a Cybil Award in the Middle Grades category, I was excited that I would get the chance to read it.

Dog Lost is the story of a boy and his dog. But it's more than just a fluffy animal story. Mackenzie lives with his dad, and he certainly isn't a good dad. An alcoholic who hasn't been the same since Mack's mom died, he comes home drunk one night and dumps a puppy on Mack's bed. Mackenzie is stunned, as is the puppy who has never had a decent home. The two quickly become inseparable, with Mack making sure Cash the puppy never bothers Dad. Best friends from the get-go, the two spend hours at the park, chasing squirrels, and just cuddling at night. Mack isn't sure why so many of the neighbors in his run-down neighborhood run the other way when they see Cash coming, because she is just a big love-bug.

What Mack doesn't realize is that Cash is a pitbull.

He also doesn't know that the town is about to pass a law outlawing pit bulls.

Mack loves Cash and Cash loves him right back. She is nothing but a gentle giant, and a baby at that. But when his dad is drunk and angry one night and goes after Mack, Cash immediately jumps between them. Growling at dad to protect her best friend she puts herself in danger. Dad grabs Cash, stuffs her in the trunk of his car, and drives to an empty field where he dumps her. Mack is heartbroken and Cash is lost and alone.

While Cash and Mack are separated for the next year and a half, the pit bull law is pushed through the town legislative bodies, Cash survives on her own (making new friends and enemies), a neighbor continues his dogfighting ring, and a downtrodden neighborhood narrowly avoids two tragedies.

This is a beautiful, heartfelt book that will connect with any animal lover. I think I can even get some of my sports fans to read, thanks to Michael Vick's recent dogfighting conviction. Dogfighting and pit bulls have been in the news a lot over the past year and this timely book will force readers to really consider their position on both. And anyone who has ever had a pet will identify with the relationship between a boy and his dog.

  5. After wandering around a local book store and happening across this book I was taken with the cover. I know it's written for the younger crowd but I had to read it. For me this was a very fast read and a page turner.

During a tough time for pitbulls due to legislation, Cash is given to Mackenzie by his father after he comes home drunk one night. She's tossed on the boy's bed and he's instructed to not let her near the furniture. Mackenzie's mother died when he was young and he's half brother has moved out. His father is more interested in himself and drinking. Cash is just what Mackenzie has wanted and needs; a dog. After a couple kicks to the guts Mackenzie's father has and enough of the puppy and takes her to deserted area and dumps her. Naturally this broke my heart as well as Mackenzie's. He never quits searching for Cash and as time passes a wonder dog begins to save people's lives and shockingly it's a pitbull. After too much time apart Mackenzie will be reunited with his beloved Cash and will find a new home safer and better for the both of them.

This is a great dog story and it does scream with the statement that pitbulls aren't all bad. I myself love dogs, there are certain breeds I can't stand and other's I'm just afraid of. But it is my belief that the trouble with these dogs are the owners and over breeding causing brain issues. However, this book was great and I did cry a couple times. I recommend this book to all dog lovers, not just pitbull lovers.

  1. What a wonderful and beautifully put together book! I know the author is very knowledgable, but this was even more then I expected.
The organization seemed to flow very well and the pictures were beautiful. This is a must have for all Bull Terrier owners, perspective owners and dog lovers.
Thank you Mrs. Alexander for all of your hard work to give us this great book!

  2. my husband and I had been thinking of getting a Bull Terrier. From the beginning of this book, we kept learning more and more about this wonderful, spunky breed. Well detailed information to include pictures of the different colors of breed, health issues, needs, wants, even showed a picture of the best toy for this dog: a kong. Recommend for anyone who is interested in this breed whether they're buying one soon or just want more knowledge on this "clown dog" :)

  3. For the price, this book gives a fair amount of info on the breed and some great pictures, good beginning book when first learning on the breed, definately recomend.

  4. A MUST read for anyone considering this breed. A wonderful and very informative book. Very helpful to me in understanding many behaviors of this particular breed, although too much emphasis on AKC opinions, functions etc. Not everyone is interested in the almighty AKC opinions and standards for showing. Sometimes a pet is just that, a beloved pet, not a show dog!

  5. What a great book. Carolyn Alaxander really knows what she is talking about. Thanks to this book and Carolyn, I have the best Bull Terrier in the world.

  1. In a word - excellent. Truely enlightening, pity the people that are in positions of power also do not read this title.
it's not just about Pit Bulls, it's about all breeds. How the writer was able to go back and get all that data is an incredible achievement and proves this was something that had to be told.

  2. Simply put, This book is proof, to show/inform the ignorant, media gullable, people out there that all the garbage and myths they believe are actually false. For example, most don't even know the difference between a guard and a watch dog.
Blame the sub-standard owners and the sensationalizing media not the breed!

  3. I read the entire book, and I love my dog and hate the bad rap that the breed gets, but I felt it was biased to the point of being almost like propaganda.

It has a zillion reports of Pit Bull aggression and why they can't be true, but I felt like it was "me thinks she doth protest too much" to quote the Bard.

I would like to see a more well balanced discussion of the issues. I did like the train of thought she developed around Pit Bulls getting a bad rap due to the press and dogfighting, therefore attracting the wrong type of owner who encourages aggressiveness. The insights into intact dogs and chains were enlightening, but could have been summed up in about 20 pages.

We live on a farm and I've often said I can't imagine how miserable our dog would be if she wasn't out and about doing "stuff" with us. But then I say that about our other dog, who is a Lab, and currently the most popular dog in America, I think. The Lab is always the instigator of mischief - go figure!

  4. Everyone needs to read this book. It gives the facts behind dog bites, and proves who the real dangerous threats are, the media, politicians, and irresponsible dog owners. They need to make a movie of this book, because unless the truth gets heard the myths will continue, and a lot of innocent animals will continue to suffer as well.

  5. This book follows the history of "canine agression" and today's "aggressive" breeds from the earliest records until now. An important read for anyone in the animal rescue or animal sheltering field - from volunteers to staff.

Be prepared though - this book reads more like a study (which is what it is) than a story. The text is factual but dry. While this may put some readers off, it doesn't lesson the importance of the message.

  1. I was able to follow the instructions for the training in this book step by step. I have been training my dogs in a more old fashion way. But my dogs and I seem to enjoy the fun and results. I have 5 Pit bulls they learn quickly already had the Basics down, but now im getting into the cool tricks and the dogs get a treat now I didn't give one before. I rate this book 4 out of 5 its a must read.

  2. I bought this book AFTER I got a pitbull. The book even teaches you how to choose a pitbull, so a small part of it was not useful for me. I didn't finish it yet, I bought it recently, but I must say I already learned a lot from it. Stuff normal people told me to do, were not allowed. Like putting my dog with its nose in its "dirt" if he does it on the carpet, or playing tug of war with it. Well, A LOT! I truly recommend it.

  3. Excellent item... however it does not state what is the best age to start your training. So far i think i have a good buy

  4. I guess I was mistakenly expecting the book to impart some great wisdom upon me or something, but 90 percent of it is about the history of pitbulls, where they came from, and the bad image they have received. there's a partial chapter about actual dog training, which basically just says that repitition is the key to success...kinda already knew that...so it was a complete waste of money, I let my kids take scissors to the book and they made a poster with the pictures that were in it, since that was the best part of the entire thing anyways.

  5. The writer makes an excellent case for adoption of shelter dogs but insists that a potential Pit owner be aware of the breeding history of the dog. Not too many shelter dogs come with their pedigree in tow.

  1. This book is great reading for someone who is or will be a first-time APBT puppy owner. It explains the special needs of these great dogs and why they've developed a bad reputation. If you are looking for more extensive info on training and activities for you and your dog, i recommend another book.

  2. Excellent, well written book on Pit Bulls. Gained a lot of useful
information on the importance of being a responsible respectful
owner of various breeds of dogs. Learned selection should be
done much more thoughtfully than how most dog owners become owners.

    Thank you!

    Helen M. Watkins

  3. Lots of great information. I have owned APBTs in the past and just recently got a APBT puppy for my birthday from my husband. This book provided very helpful information. I feel more confident in my ability to raise a well adjusted APBT.

  4. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to gain a good understanding of a wonderful creature. The information is clear and concise, easy to read putting down and starting again over time.

Good pictures and nice size and weight!

  5. This product was a gift, and I have no first hand contact with it. Nevertheless, its recipient informed he of his complete satisfaction with its delivery and contents. I can rate it only less than perfect for the simple reason that I lack any first hand experience with the item I purchased for someone else. In no way is this rating intended to convey any dissatisfaction with the book whatsoever.

  1. I own this book and have read it several times. It makes perfect sense that these are great dogs and they have developed a bad reputation based on having bad owners. A dog is a biproduct of their owner. We have seen the same thing happen with German Shepherds, Rotts, and Dobermans. This book was very helpful and there is no bias, only truth. The American Pitbull Terrier is a wonderful family dog when properly raised and socialized.

  2. Dr. Coile has immense experience and expertise in raising and training dogs for numerous canine sports. She offers an easy and fun to read manual for the novice Pit Bull owner and a handy guide for the ol' timers too. Great pictures, great advice, and important facts about our breed. Looking for books on the breed? Start with this one, it's a must have.

  3. I OWN THIS BOOK AND I READ IT IN THREE DAYS, IT HAS EVERY THING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT A PITBULL. IT ALSO HAS A LOT OF DETAILS OF THE LITTLE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW! WHAT I REALLY LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS IT ACUALLY TELLS YOU HOW NICE PITBULLS ARE,AND HOW YOU CAN HELP THEM!!! THIS BOOK IS SO GREAT!!! IF YOU WANT A PIT BULL YOU SHOULD BUT THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS BOOK SAYS IT ALL.

I told myself I'd never own a "pitbull". A friend at work does rescue work for this breed, and I decided to take in a foster pup. Never say never. These really are words to live by. I'm on my second foster pit, and seriously thinking of adopting one of them.(ok maybe both) This book has helped me come to that decision. I never take on ANY BREED, until I've learned what I believe is all I need to know. Don't just read a book though, talk to owners of the breed your considering too. I never knew a more cuddly, funny and amazing breed than the Pit. GO PITS !!!

  5. This book was a quick read that answered most of my questions! If you are getting a bully pup, this is a must have :)

  1. This book held my attention as soon as I started reading. Author Susan Wilson combines skilled writing with plot strategems that will positively be called "classic" and negative derided as "trite," depending on your perspective.

The book begins with a scenario in an animal shelter with a clever twist. We soon meet Adam March, a demanding self-centered CEO candidate of a prestigious company. March is the stereotypical man on the way up, owning three homes with a "money is no object" lifestyle.

One day, following an accidnetal emotional trigger, he commits an act that has legal, moral and financial consequences. He loses everything and ultimately finds a new life through working at a homeless shelter and yes, inadvertently adopting a dog. His pit bull mix also has been cast out by society and also experiences trouble escaping his past (sometimes literally). There's even a romantic connection to Adam, his new life, and of course, the dog.

I read the book before reading reviews, barely skimming the book jacket blurb. It's a tribute to the author that I didn't find myself questioning the plot, characters or setting. I wanted escape fiction and there it was. The pacing and suspense were flawless. The ending was plausible...just.

Inevitably this book will be compared to Garth Stein's Art of Racing in the Rain. Stein's writing is tighter and more lyrical. His book is much more painful to read, but also has stronger descriptions of the environment and some truly memorable passages.

One Good Dog should stand on its own. If I were looking for comparisons, I'd compare it more to Lost & Found by Jacqueline Sheehan, rather than Racing in the Rain.

  2. I was enthralled from the first page - could not lay the book down. If you only read one book a year, let this be the book.

  3. A real snob of a guy ends up blowing his top, losing EVERYTHING; house, wife, daughter, friends, job -- Everything he worked so hard to get in one moment. So now here is in a little apartment, doing community service and eeking by.

Enter in a pit bull that has been raised for fighting. How he comes upon this dog is not a part of the story I will share, you will have to find out yourself. However, it is a good story of a man hitting rock bottom, finding out what is really important with the help of an ugly mutt!

There were a few typos in here which was distracting because it wasn't an ARC for me. Although I could guess what is going to happen, it was a good storyline!

  4. I highly recommend "One Good Dog." It is a story that will tear at your heart strings and make you believe in the good in all creatures. Not just for dog lovers, this book has universal appeal because it speaks to the various bonds we create in our lives.
