  1. I purchased this book because it was written by the breeder of my Brittany. The book covers the basics, from where the breed began to how to pick a puppy. I think it is a must read for those thinking of purchasing a Brittany. They are not the breed for everyone and the book addresses the ins and outs of the Brittany personality.

  2. I bought this reference book as an experienced Brittany owner. Beverly Millette is a Brittany expert and has produced the largest nunber of Brittany Champions in the American Kennel Club. The book matches her expertise and is highly readable and understandable even for new dog owners.

  1. This is a great book for anyone interested in bird dogs, especially Brittanys. Most of Mr. Williams books that I have read have been instructional whereas this book is a more personal story about his favorite dog Winston and his performance in the field. It is right up there with "The Rufus Chronicle". I just recently got a Brittany from the American Brittany Rescue and have not hunted him and actually haven't been hunting since I was a little girl with my dad. However, after reading Mr. William's book I have had the urge to get out there and try with my very first dog. This is a must read for Brittany lovers!

  1. Great Calendar, I have been buying this Calendar for years, however the service was a disappointment. Order the Calendar December 16th as a Christmas present and did not receive it until after the new year. We live in Tennessee and the product was shipped from Kentucky. I could have walked to Louisville and back in that period of time.

  1. I have never trained a bird dog before. So this book was bought to get ideas and instructions on how to train a dog. The book is easy to read and appears to have ways to train the dog clearly defined. Obviously it is to early to tell weather the instructions yield results as I still have not trained a dog. I have bought a puppy and have begun some of the fundamental behavior training.

  1. Maxwell Riddle is very informed and knowledgeable. The book is very complete- even has a chapter on what to name your Brittany! I especially appreciated the training chapter. The one problem I had with this book is that it is 13 years old, which meant that some of the information was outdated. Definitely the best Brittany book on the market.

  2. The New Complete Brittany is a good book. It gives you some background on the Brittany in both the Hunting and Show Bloodlines. It is also an excellent reference for anyone interested in the Brittany Spaniel.

  1. As the cover states the book provides a comprehensive guide for Brittany owners. It cleared up misconceptions about the beginning of the breed that I acquired from other "authoritative" sources. For any one interested in a highly energenic affectionate companion dog this book and contact with good examples of the breed will bring pleasure to your life.

  2. I recently adopted a seven year old Brittany Spaniel from The American Brittany Spaniel Rescue. I found the book to be full of great information on Brittanys. It was very helpful to me.

  1. Excellent book for the new Brittany owner. I've bought 4 other books since I got my pup, and this one is the best. Plenty of general purpose info for any dog owner, plus lots of specifics about Brittanys. Training information is also provided.

  2. This book is OK, but contains a few errors. The first review is also wrong, tri-color is not common or acceptable in American Brittanys. That is a feature of a French Brittany, and the bloodlines are distinct. One thing the book fails to underscore sufficiently is how "hyper" a brittany is: if you have never been around a pointing dog, please take some time to do so before getting a brittany so it doesn't wind up being orphaned. They are sweet, biddable dogs, but need to run alot every day. This is particularly true of a well-bred britt, since it will come from lines that maintain field traits. Good luck.

  3. When I put a down payment on a Brittany pup, I purchased this book in order to gain knowledge about the breed. My Brittany is now 3 years old and I continue to look at this book as a reference.

  4. If you are looking for generic information that would pertain to any breed, this book serves the purpose. There is basic information presented pertaining to the Brittany but I found little substance. If you are familiar with breed books from Barrons you understand what I mean. The Brittany is a unique, fiesty little dog and I was looking for a book that would delve into the temperment, development and point me in the right direction as far as training needs for my special companion. The information provided in this book does not concentrate on the Brittany and except for the pictures and brief chapters touching on the breed as a dual purpose companion/upland game hunter you can basically find the exact information on any breed in a Barrons book. I have trained Collies and Golden Retrievers and being a first time Brittany owner was hoping for a lot more information. You can go to the akc.org page and get the breed standard information for free. The book touches on hunting and retrieving but again, more in depth information can be found on most of the reputable breeder sites online. If you are looking to really get inside the breed, save your money, this book is nothing more than basic health care information that would pertain to any dog. A "complete owner's manual" it is not. I don't need to buy a book to tell me that my dog needs fresh water every day. The brief section on training says nothing about the "soft" temperment of this dog and the need for gentle positive reward methods and the risk of raising a timid fearful dog with problems that may be hard for the inexperienced owner to correct. If you are looking for a book with basic care instructions such as nail clipping, grooming, basic daily care and information on various potential health problems such as parasitic infection, explanations of the common diseases that we vaccinate our pups to be protected from, you will find the information in this book.
Bottom line- if you are new to dog ownership you may find the information useful and valuable. If you are an experienced dog owner, pass on this one.

  5. This is easy reading; with valuable information for the first time Brittany owner. It gives the reader a good overall blueprint of how to care for your Britt as well as giving some insight on this dual-purpose dog, or other avenues that one would like to pursue with their new Britt. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "Health Care" being written by a vet it was especially well written. I would say this book is a great book to ad to your collection and/or should be the first book to read on Brittany's.
