  1. This book is excellent as it is not the typical generic product that you sometimes see. This book is filled with useful information, positive reinforcement training and wonderful tips.
As a part of the American Boxer Rescue Association as well as the IAABC and APDT, I will gladly be recommending this book to clients who own boxers.

  1. This book is an excellent, well rounded, consise educational book on boxers. Chapters include: -The Typical Boxer -Tips on Buying a Boxer -Getting the Puppy Settled -Understanding Boxers -Training: The Gentle Approach -Daily Grooming and Health Check and, -Proper Nutrition and Feeding -Preventive Health Care and Illnesses -Breeding Boxers

As you can see this book is very complete. You will understand and appreciate boxers in a whole new way. The book also contains many wonderful color photographs, and a complete lists of additional sources for information and help in caring for your boxer.

    A must have!

  2. This is a great book to prepare you for getting a boxer. It has great information on training and health for your new puppy. Also, it has many great pictures of boxers.

  3. As a "dog person", I have to say that I learned very little specifically about boxers from this book. There is some standard stuff about dogs in general "Fleas feed on a dog by biting and sucking its blood. Their bites often cause severe itching..." Who doesn't know this information? Even children can tell you this without reading this (price) book. The stuff which is specific to boxers (breed standards, health information) can easily be obtained by an internet search. The only reason I gave it two stars is that some of the photographs are nice. I don't reccomend buying this book.

  4. The book wasn't too helpful. Just gave me information on things I already knew. I bought a better one for only $1.00 at a local dollar store. I advise you not to buy and just do a little web surfing online. You'll find better information.

  5. It would be a good book for people who know almost nothing about dogs, but its info is very general

  1. This book, having been written by a breeder, tells you alot about the breed. It is full of valuable information, that can be used everyday. The pictures are great, along with the complete background about the breed. Thanks for a wonderful book.

  2. Our family was looking into the breed to research if Boxers were for us. This book was helpful and the information was clear. I also ordered Boxers - A complete Pet Owner's Manual by BARRONS. When both arrived together in the mail I was more inclined to pick up the book by Barrons first. The photos were more inticing and the layout and text was less inhibiting. I found myself picking up the book by Richard Tomita after I completed Barrons book. I would have to say I gathered information from both. If I could only select one - I would select Barrons.

  3. I have been breeding Boxers for over 15 years and I only give out this boxer book to clients. It is written by a man who knows and lives with boxers and has for many years. He breeds and shows and has a great record and reputation. I tell all my clients that this is the only boxer book they will ever need.

  4. I recently became interested in the Boxer. After doing some preliminary research on Boxers, Mr. Tomita's name came up as not only the best resource on this breed of dog but also as the Boxer's best breeder. I went to his home in New Jersey to talk with him about his boxers and to see the six generations living with him, so that I could get a real feeling for the breed and see if they are right for me. As his litany of works suggests, Mr. Tomita is a veritable wealth of information; too, he is extraordinarily nice. As I was leaving---after three and a half hours of getting to know the dogs---Mr. Tomita gave this book to me and suggested that I read it as soon as possible, in order to acquaint myself with this breed that I am recently so enamored with. On a plane flight the next day, I picked this book up and only put it down when I had finished it, several hours later. Tomita is neither verbose nor too brief; he is perfectly succinct. I have read an enormous amount of literature in all sorts of disciplines, and this is, literally, a consummate introduction to a subject I knew little about. That is not to say, however, that brevity is this text's only virtue. It is thorough, approachable and poignant. And as an added bonus, the author's historical and fact-based accounts are buttressed by wonderful anecdotes, such as his personal solutions to common problems and his incisive reasoning behind them. Did you know that if your dog ever breaks your grip and runs away, that you should run in the opposite direction or lay on the ground pretending to cry? Counterintuitive to the novice, perhaps, but Tomita explains this method's efficacy. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in The Boxer.

  1. If you are a new, or even a not-so-new family member of a boxer, you will learn a lot from this book. Karla Spitzer is experienced with this breed and does a great job explaining in clear terms how to make a good life for your boxer, whether you have acquired a pup or perhaps an older rescued boxer. How I wish I had this book when our first boxer, a rescued stray, came into our lives. Sadly there are many people who bring home a boxer but are not aware of some of the special medical issues to be on the alert for and some of the special needs of the boxer as a member of your pack. With a guide like this you will have a much better experience and your boxer will be happier and healthier.

  2. I purchased this book after getting my first boxer. It is a very good book for the new boxer owner. I wish I would have had this book before getting my boxer- it would have been helpful when interviewing the breeder. It would also be very helpful for those who have not researched the boxer before. I did not give it 5 stars only because a lot of the information was basic dog information - education on training techniques and caring for a dog. But if you are new to owning a dog or haven't had a new puppy in a while, it would be very helpful. The information is all accurate and educational and is a good review for any dog owner.

  1. As an owner of three boxers and 10 boxer books, if I could only have one boxer book this would be it. It is full of wonderful information for both people who know and love the breed, and also is a wonderful introduction to someone considering their first boxer.

  2. Just to state the fact that The Boxer: Family Favorite won the Dog Writers Association of America award as the Best Single Breed Book of the year 2000. This book is THE definitive in-depth study of the breed by someone who has spent her whole life living with and loving Boxers. The color photographs are outstanding.

  3. Author Stephanie Abraham put out another great book in 2000. Enough readers & critics enjoyed it to have it earn the same year's "Dog Writers Assoc of America" award. It's a handsome hardcover book with 220+ crisp pages. Pictures on just about every page. Abraham is dedicated to the Boxer breed. She speaks of the Boxer with admiration as only a Boxer owner could. She writes well and in easy to read fashion. Topics include caring for, general health, choosing your Boxer and traits to look for in a puppy, history, basic tips in training... and so much more. I refer to this book constantly. This is a very thorough book and anyone who owns a Boxer should own it. The only thing it doesn't mention - the older your Boxer gets, the more he slobbers. My family (including our Boxer, Max) is better off for it.

  4. This is a nice book, but I did miss some information.
Too little discussion about the differences between the european boxer and "the american style", both physical and mental differences are now very present. If you live in Europe, I would choose another book.
For americans I`m sure it will hit the mark, though even for some of them this is an important topic.

  5. This is a great book. Wonderful photos. All inclusive. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this breed. I just purchased a boxer and I found it informative and very helpful to get a good understanding of the breed. This is a great coffee table book also.

5 comments about Boxer Handbook, The (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
  1. I bought this book when I first adopted my deaf, white boxer. This book passed my first test - the author doesn't say that deaf boxers or white boxers should be killed. It's also a great introduction to boxers. There is information on boxer history, picking out your boxer, bringing him home, health and starting training. It's not a complete guide to everything, but is a wonderful introduction to the boxer dog. It gave me a better idea of questions to ask the vet and training questions to pursue.

  2. I thought The Boxer Handbook was very informative--went into great depth about the orgin and history of the boxer. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone considering purchasing a Boxer for the first time.

  3. I have an 11 week old boxer puppy. This book has been a great help in learning all one needs to know about raising a dog. I highly recommend it.

  4. This book relates basic dog care information in a fairly well written format. I also purchased the boxer training book from the same author thinking there would be some help not offered there. If you have already purchased a boxer, then I would skip this title and only get the training book. Much of the information is redundant between the books except the deciding if you really want a boxer part.

  5. This book has every question I ever wanted to know about the boxer as a breed and a pet. Written in clear easy to understand dialogue.

  1. It's great to see the author writing customer reviews of their own book? Turned me off from buying the book. How stupid does she think people are?

  2. I found this to be well written and informative. A good buy.

  3. This book tells of numerous ways to train your boxer so you can pick which method works best for your dog. Easy to follow instructions makes training fun and alot less daunting.

  4. very useful book. packed full of common sense advice that is easily adapatable to your personal situation with your dog - whether he/she is a puppy or older dog. I'm glad I read this book and would reccommend it to anyone who is considering or has gotten a boxer - they are a special breed with their own unique personality traits and it is very helpful to understand how they think when training them.

  5. Highly recommended for the prospective boxer owner. Offers a unique perspective to training the boxer and covers most facets of ownership. Lots of good practical information in terms anyone can understand. Have read the book repeatedly and glean more information each time. Will be a continuing source of reference as my boxer matures. Thanks to Joan Walker for this outstanding practical guide.

5 comments about Boxers for Dummies.
  1. Like most for dummies books, this is essentially a cut and paste of all of their other dog books with the word boxer inserted in place of dog. In a few cases it has stories of the writers experiences with boxers but this book is really nothing special. Try culture clash to get a better understanding of your companion.

  2. I really enjoyed reading this book on Boxers. I am researching dog breeds before I commit to a new family member. There was a careful balance of enthusiasm for the Boxer and warnings of their specialized needs AND the responsibilites of Boxer ownership.
I especially enjoyed the observations he made between male and female boxers, puppy training, and problematic behaviors.
Even if I don't decide to own a Boxer in the future, this was an entertaining educational read that I would recommend to all.

  3. I agree with one of the preceding reviews. Substitute beagle or French poodle for boxer and you have 90% the same book. I was looking for a little more insight.

  4. We've just become the owners of a boxer pup, and used this book before and after he joined our family. The book is very easy to understand and contains a wealth of useful material. It also has a lot of general sections that would be relevant to any new pet owner. This isn't a book you would use for hard-core research, but I recommend it for the average new pet owner as an easy to read reference. It was well worth the price.

  5. The book about Boxers has lots of information about the breed. Those of us who are unfamiliar with the breed, gathered lots of things that will help us in the care and nuturing of this wonderful animal! Who knew that big old grizzly looking Boxer was a sweetheart, full of affection and devotion! Great reference book to have on handle, especially if you're rearing a pup.

  1. I like that the chapters are short and well written. There is always the twists and turns that keep you interested in the book.

  2. The Woman's Murder Club is made up of Detective Lindsay Boxer, Assistant D.A. Yuki Castellano, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and Reporter Cindy Thomas, so when these girls sink their teeth into a crime in San Francisco, Criminal lookout.

In this outing popular and well liked Michael Campion, son of the past Governor of California has been kidnapped. We learn fairly soon that hooker Junie Moon was present when Michael was killed, but did she do it?

Meanwhile some guys named Pidge and Hawk are burning down the houses of the wealthy, while the wealthy are still in them, and that'll get the attention of the SFPD real quick, crispy rich people.

So there you have the crimes the gals are going to dig into when you dig into this fast paced book (and the pace is made even faster by Mr. Patterson's short chapters: 376 pagers cut up into a whopping 125 chapters. You can do the math, they're short.) I read the book in one sitting, just couldn't put it down.

  3. I enjoyed this book tremendously. I love the whole Womens Murder Club series, books and the TV show based on it. I am definitely a fan of ALL of James Patterson's books. And I am very glad that new 'bestsellers' come out often.
    FOREVER A FAN

  4. This was the 7th book in the Womans Murder Club, easy fast reading.
    Excellent!!!!

  5. When I selected this item, it did indicate that it was a hard cover, but I was a little disappointed to receive what looks like a Doubleday hard cover and not a hardcover that would have been sold in stores. Other than that, the book was in excellent condition.
