  1. Ok, everytime I see this cover I smile. Genuinely, smile. Maybe it's because I own a bassett/beagle and it's all so familiar. This book is ADORABLE! The pictures are awesome, plentiful and Maggie-nificent. Definate coffee table book for the beagle or bassett lover. Great gift idea too. You cant look at this book and NOT smile. It's contagious.

  2. This book is a wonderful look at life from the Basset's perspective. The pictures are delightful and the text perfect. Can't say enough good things about Maggie's Way.

  3. Harley riders have a saying -- "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand."

Simply put, Bill Stanton has captured the love and wisdom gathered by sharing your world with one of God's true masterpieces.

This is a book so good, it made me angry I didn't have the idea myself!

  4. This book's pictures are worth a thousand words.
Such a spendid biography of Maggie. Very characteristic of the basset hound.
A must-have for the Basset owner on any Christmas list.

  5. Bill Stanton has truely captured the spirit of my dog in this wonderful pictorial of Maggie. What a great picture book, it never fails to make me smile. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns or is considering a basset hound as a family member.

  1. I've loved and raised Bassets for many years. I've had many calendars over those years as well and the one published by Browntrout is by far a favorite. Not only are the photos exceptional - but the type is very nice and it includes small sayings and quotes about dogs on each month's page. The days are large enough to write in and keep notes but still be decorative enough to fit into a home atmosphere. THIS is the only Dog calendar I buy each year and is highly recommended to other dog lovers as well.

  2. ---you will like this calendar. If you love Bassett Hounds, you will love this calendar.

  3. I'm so excited that this picture has finally made the calendar. The larger Basset is Stanley and the middle Basset is Zoe. They both live with us, and little Brewster is their friend. All the pictures in this calendar are truly special, and we're delighted to be part of it.

  1. Do No Evil captures your attention from the beginning and I found it really hard to put it down. It has all the elements of a good suspense/mystery novel. The characters are intriguing and capture your heart. Everyone can relate to Phineas and Phoebe. Excellent book! I definitely recommend giving it a read!

  2. In this delightful tale we meet two sisters, Phineas and Phoebe. Phineas just got fired and returns home to New York to mend her wounds. We also meet her older sister, Phoebe, who has just been left standing at the altar. The two, although sisters, are very different, but that is what helps to make this story top-notch. Both girls looking for a new beginning decide to open a private investigation service to the dismay of most of their family, except for grandma, of course.

Soon after their doors are open a corpse is left in their office with a warning note. More people are killed, with the bodies in places that the girls would find, and they realize their small town of Lair has some bad history that someone is trying to revenge. Now the girls are thrust into solving murders, finding out what the secret is and why they have been chosen to do this, and hope that they will not be next on the murders list.

I liked this book right from the start. I thought the authors did a wonderful job with their description of the sisters and the girls family making the entire group alive in the minds eye. I enjoyed them bringing in the grandma for a few giggles, she is quite a character and definitely added some spice to the read and fun as well. They also gently weaved in romance with the police officer and the Vet. It wasn't too overwhelming and did not take away from the girls main theme which were all the murders and the job at hand. They were very careful to include details and leave little clues as to just who was behind all the murders but I was still surprised at the ending.

This is really a great book. It is fun, it's romantic, it's mysterious with characters that you will find endearing and hard to forget. It has a storyline that keeps you wanting more even when the last page is read. Good job ladies, thanks for the reading pleasure. I'm waiting for more.

  1. This book is just tooooooo perfect. If you own or love a basset hound, this is the book for you. Pictures and commentary are on the spot! Quick read and fantastic pics.

  2. If you are having a dog of a day, this book will lift your spirits. The pictures and captions are funny and oh, so true. I ordered a second copy of this book for a gift, it is that good. Enjoy

  3. We lost our Basset Hound, Tinker Bell, just a few years ago. To this day, we still mourn in my home, for that wonderful dog. Then along comes this book: "The Tao of Maggie" that I purchased as a birthday gift for my wife.

    WOOF !!!

You don't have to own, or even be anywhere near a Basset Hound, to enjoy the words & pictures found in this amazing little book! Bill Stanton, the author-photographer, and owner of Maggie, the Basset, knows his subject so very well! The wisdom and wit, that you are going to find in this book, more than make the purchase price seem very low, indeed! And, the images of Maggie, make this even better still.

This book will heal you, it has done wonders in my home!
    FIVE STARS !!!

  4. Even though the vendor gave a wide window for delivery time, the book was sent quickly and arrived in great condition. I've used this vendor before, and I will again too.

  5. I just received this book as a gift for a basset-loving friend. It was barely out of the box and I had gone through the whole book! Great photos and bits of wisdom!! This will be a perfect gift! If you have ever met a basset, you will laugh out loud! If you haven't met a basset, you will want to after seeing this book! I'm going to get back online and order another one for myself in addition to Bill Stanton's other book. Thank you, Bill, for capturing the soul of the basset so well!!

  1. This is one of our favorite kid books. It's even a cute book for dog-lover adults. It's a very cute story with great illustrations.

  2. This is my 20 mo old son's favorite book and has been for months now. He carries it around the house calling "Ah roooo" and will ask anyone to read it to him. He loves looking at the pictures of all the dogs, pointing out the blue basset and calling out Ah rooo whenever he sees him. Ah roo was one of his first and still one of his favorite animal sounds. After having read the book (literally) hundreds of times, I am still charmed by it, although now I can recite it by memory. Great book!

  3. I collect children stories about dogs because I volunteer doing pet therapy and we do a program called read to the dogs. We have children who are shy about reading out loud, read a story to our dogs. Dogs don't tease of judge so the children feel free to read out loud. The dogs just give love. I loved this book, the illustrations are great and the story is well written. I took this to our program and the children loved this story. Like the lesson that dogs from the pound that are trained can be wonderful pets. It really lets children know that a rescued dog is a treasure. Good lesson presented in a fun way.

  4. Being a Basset Hound family for 40 years, I always check out books related to this dog. I purchased this book for my grandchildren (who also have a Bassset). They love it!

  5. Fun book for boys and girls. Lots of dogs and rhyming! Great illustrations, too.

  1. I'd never read Peggy Webb, but I could hear those Southern Cousin's voices in my head. Callie's clicking tock; her estranged but sexy mysterious Harley-riding husband; a custody battle over a Bassett hound; Uncle Charlie's calm demeanor and mafia responses; Lovie's lust for bad boys, and Mama's Prohibition Punch make this a laugh out loud too fast read. Can't wait for the next. And just one more thing, given Callie's penchant for Manolos, why isn't Elvis howling "Blue Suede Shoes"?

  2. I enjoyed reading "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" a great deal. The characters are warm and likeable, the rural Missisippi locale is lovingly depicted and the action is pretty hilarious. However, there were some weaknesses. I just didn't find the motivation for a lot of the things that happened to be enough to be entirely believable both for the Callie, the main character's behaviors (she's divorcing her husband because he bought a mororcycle?), and for the plotline in general. As much as it was all fun to read a lot of the extreme things that happened needed to have a better motive supplied. Of course that is typical of this genre of "madcap mystery" fiction, but for some reason I found it noticeable enough in "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" to wish it was better. I also felt as though the writing quality went up and down, sometimes there was a wealth of detail that gave a great picture of the scene, and sometimes, there was a single sentence that left me wondering "what the...?"

But really, the fun and the charm (and Elvis Presley reincarnated as Callie's pet Basset Hound's commentary) make this a nice read. It's sweet and gentle but funny and modern as well. I intend to read the next in the series.

  3. This book will make you laugh out loud. It is a great book to curl up with on a rainy day. I hope the author writes lots more of this series. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a light funny read.

  4. Elvis in "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" is a dog in this case, or as the dog Elvis tells us, he is Elvis himself reincarnated as a basset hound. The best parts of the story are when Elvis comments on his surroundings and his owners, Callie and her husband Jack.

Callie and Jack are in the midst of a divorce that Jack will not authorize since he wants custody of Elvis.

The story centers around a stolen corpse from the funeral home, Eternal Rest, that Callie's Uncle Charlie owns. Callie and her counsin, Lovie set out to find the missing corpse and get involved in a rollicking murder mystery with comments along the way from Elvis the lovable basset hound.

This is a pretty good read and has some funny, madcap moments as Callie and her cousin set out in search of the missing corpse.

  5. I haven't finished this book--had to stop because it was so stupid I couldn't go on. Reminds me of Laurel and Hardy, the worst of I Love Lucy, dumb people doing ridiculous things. The leader of the two main characters is divorcing her husband because he can't tell the truth about his past, his job, his life, his means of support; but she can't stop sleeping with him!???? What? The dog thinks he is the reincarnation of Elvis Presley!??? The other main character is a 190 lb sexually promiscuous "bombshell"!??? I don't care who took the body--would someone please put these two out of their misery. This isn't humor, it's painful.

  1. Casey and Lacey Nicefolk return for their second adventure. We first met them in "Adventures of Vin Fiz" (2006). It's refreshing to see a writer of Cussler's stature extend the excitement of his adult novels to the preteen set. What a great way for parents to encourage their children to read. While mom and dad are poring over one of Juan Cabrillo's tales, their kids can be reading the same author right along with them. Brilliant!

  2. After flying through the air in the Vin Fiz, Casey and Lacey Nicefolk are back for another adventure. Thanks to the help of Mr. Sucoh Sucop (hocus pocus spelled backward), the non-identical twins still have the magic box that transforms small toys or figurines into life-size objects. Although they had their hands full in their last adventure flying a replica of the Wright Brothers' Flyer, school is almost out and summer seems like just the perfect time for Casey and Lacey to have more fun!

A poster highlighting an upcoming boat race makes its way into Casey's hands, and he knows exactly what he and Lacey should do. The Gold Cup National Race is a powerboat endurance race up the Sacramento River to the state capital of California and then back down to the San Francisco Bay. Lacey is skeptical, but when Casey shows her a model replica of a famous powerboat, the Hotsy Totsy, Lacey agrees to the thrilling boat race. The Nicefolks' dog, Floopy, also thinks it's a great idea. He just loves wearing goggles and the feeling of fresh air blowing in his face.

After pushing the magic lever and wishing with all their might,Casey and Lacey magically create a life-size Hotsy Totsy and are ready to win a boat race! The twins decide the only way to enter the race is by sneaking in the night before. Their plan hits a snag, however, when they encounter the last person they ever wanted to see again: the Boss. Casey and Lacey managed to put the Boss and his henchman behind bars last time, but the Boss is out for revenge and he captures the twins and locks them in a cell on Alcatraz Island. The Boss has recently robbed a bank, and he and his henchman plan to escape with the money and leave Casey and Lacey behind.

The magical Hotsy Totsy, though, knows just what to do, and Floopy helps as the Hotsy Totsy sets out to rescue the Nicefolk twins. Casey and Lacey manage to escape thanks to Floopy and return in time to enter the boat race. The Boss may have let the twins slip through his fingers again --- but he isn't finished with them just yet!

Casey and Lacey enter the race at the last minute and soon find themselves in the midst of a high-speed adventure. The Hotsy Totsy passes one boat, then another, and eventually finds itself gaining on the leaders. The officials aren't too happy with a pair of kids and their dog participating in the race, but after the nation becomes captivated with the Nicefolk siblings, Casey and Lacey are allowed to continue. The Hotsy Totsy seems to have a mind of its own as it navigates the rough waters and builds speed to pass the other powerboats. Just when it seems like the Hotsy Totsy has a real shot at winning, the Boss shows up again; this time he's looking to get rid of Casey and Lacey --- for good!

Clive Cussler has built a huge following with his adult books, but younger kids will enjoy this latest installment in his children's book series. THE ADVENTURES OF HOTSY TOTSY combines Cussler's love of action, adventure, and magnificent boat workmanship. Although there are moments when the reader will need to suspend the realm of belief --- it's not too often 10-year-olds could get away entering a boat race --- the best moments come in the action sequences that thrive under the expertise of Cussler.

  3. I read Cussler all the time and felt my grand daughter would love it at 12, but atlas she said it was too simple for a teen:
Still a great author for the adults.

  4. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." -- 2 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV)

Having been quite disappointed by The Adventures of Vin Fiz, but generally liking the idea of Clive Cussler writing books for youngsters, I decided to take a chance on The Adventures of Hotsy Totsy. I'm pleased to report that Mr. Cussler must have read and taken his critics' many negative comments about The Adventures of Vin Fiz to heart. As a consequence, he begins to find his sea legs in The Adventures of Hotsy Totsy.

First, Mr. Cussler wisely chooses to set most of the action on the water, involving an antique motorboat that races the modern powerboats. As you can imagine, that gives a lot of "root for the underdog" opportunities as the brother and sister, Casey and Lacey Nicefolk, take on the overconfident, smug adults. There are some surprising complications that make the story more appealing. In addition, Mr. Cussler gives Lacey something to do besides praise her brother.

Second, the story has some important moral messages involved that are pretty well delivered. Parents and grandparents will be pleased about that.

Third, the "magic" element isn't played up so much here. That's all to the good.

The book feels as if it was written pretty rapidly. I say that because a lot of the descriptions of Hotsy Totsy swooping across the water basically repeat references to rooster tails. Perhaps Mr. Cussler needs an editor to remind him to vary his ways of describing the action.

I suspect that by the third book in this series, Mr. Cussler will have gotten a lot better at writing for youngsters. I suspect that many youngsters will be glad that he persisted in learning.

  5. The book The Hosty Tosty was a really well written book because
interesting storyline and really excellent characters I strongly recommend
this book for kids my age to read.
