  1. As a 4th grade teacher, I use a lot of Elizabeth Levy's books in my classroom. My students absolutely LOVE the "Something Queer..." stories. They get very wrapped up in the mysteries and they enjoy the Gwen and Jill characters. There is ONE character that they love above all others, and that is- Fletcher the Bassett Hound.
We were all very excited to learn that Elizabeth and Mordicai would be working on books told from Fletcher's point of view. This book is delightful and funny--a great read aloud. I would also reccommend, "A Hare Raising Tale" and ALL of the Something Queer books. Not just for kids, but for dog lovers and mystery lovers alike!!!

  2. Do you like very funny dramatic books? Well Principal on the Roof by Elizabeth Lewis is a great book for you. It's about a reading marathon that is happening at Ella's school. The kids need to read 1000 books so the principal will spend the morning reading them a book on the roof. Do you think the kids would read 1000 books before the end of April? Well, read this book to find out.

  1. I'd never read Peggy Webb, but I could hear those Southern Cousin's voices in my head. Callie's clicking tock; her estranged but sexy mysterious Harley-riding husband; a custody battle over a Bassett hound; Uncle Charlie's calm demeanor and mafia responses; Lovie's lust for bad boys, and Mama's Prohibition Punch make this a laugh out loud too fast read. Can't wait for the next. And just one more thing, given Callie's penchant for Manolos, why isn't Elvis howling "Blue Suede Shoes"?

  2. I enjoyed reading "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" a great deal. The characters are warm and likeable, the rural Missisippi locale is lovingly depicted and the action is pretty hilarious. However, there were some weaknesses. I just didn't find the motivation for a lot of the things that happened to be enough to be entirely believable both for the Callie, the main character's behaviors (she's divorcing her husband because he bought a mororcycle?), and for the plotline in general. As much as it was all fun to read a lot of the extreme things that happened needed to have a better motive supplied. Of course that is typical of this genre of "madcap mystery" fiction, but for some reason I found it noticeable enough in "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" to wish it was better. I also felt as though the writing quality went up and down, sometimes there was a wealth of detail that gave a great picture of the scene, and sometimes, there was a single sentence that left me wondering "what the...?"

But really, the fun and the charm (and Elvis Presley reincarnated as Callie's pet Basset Hound's commentary) make this a nice read. It's sweet and gentle but funny and modern as well. I intend to read the next in the series.

  3. This book will make you laugh out loud. It is a great book to curl up with on a rainy day. I hope the author writes lots more of this series. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a light funny read.

  4. Elvis in "Elvis and the Dearly Departed" is a dog in this case, or as the dog Elvis tells us, he is Elvis himself reincarnated as a basset hound. The best parts of the story are when Elvis comments on his surroundings and his owners, Callie and her husband Jack.

Callie and Jack are in the midst of a divorce that Jack will not authorize since he wants custody of Elvis.

The story centers around a stolen corpse from the funeral home, Eternal Rest, that Callie's Uncle Charlie owns. Callie and her counsin, Lovie set out to find the missing corpse and get involved in a rollicking murder mystery with comments along the way from Elvis the lovable basset hound.

This is a pretty good read and has some funny, madcap moments as Callie and her cousin set out in search of the missing corpse.

  5. I haven't finished this book--had to stop because it was so stupid I couldn't go on. Reminds me of Laurel and Hardy, the worst of I Love Lucy, dumb people doing ridiculous things. The leader of the two main characters is divorcing her husband because he can't tell the truth about his past, his job, his life, his means of support; but she can't stop sleeping with him!???? What? The dog thinks he is the reincarnation of Elvis Presley!??? The other main character is a 190 lb sexually promiscuous "bombshell"!??? I don't care who took the body--would someone please put these two out of their misery. This isn't humor, it's painful.

  1. Tupelo, Mississippi is the town where Elvis grew up. Each year the townsfolk have a Best Elvis Competition that brings in thousands of his fans, impersonators and look alikes. Hair stylist Callie Valentine Jones has the real McCoy, the reincarnated spirit of the King in ironically a hound dog`s body though she knows it not.. He silently judges the contestants comparing them to when he was in star prime. He also is trying to reconcile Callie with her almost ex-husband Jack who disappears a lot, does not want kids, and has a secret job that only Elvis knows about.

One of the participants Brian Watson is found dead on the piano. When a second impersonator Dick Gerard dies on the dance floor, the local police believe both men were murdered. The prime suspect is Callie's cousin Lovie, the caterer of the event. When a third person dies, Callie's Uncle Charlie tries to persuade her not to investigate since Lovie's was dancing with the second victim when he started shaking and died and the focus will be on her even more and Charlie does not want Callie in danger. Callie and the King make inquiries anyway.

Peggy Webb's amateur sleuth is a lighthearted amusing whodunit with outrageous almost slapstick scenes that Callie seems to step into as she tries to help Lovie, dodge her spouse and deal with a horde of Elvis reenactors when she has the real one. She and Elvis the hound rotate perspective leading to a zany over the top of Woodall Mountain mystery. The second Southern Cousins corny mystery (see ELVIS AND THE DEARLY DEPARTED) is simply entertaining fun.

    Harriet Klausner

  3. I enjoyed this book. It's a cute cozy mystery. Having a Basset Hound for a character doesn't hurt either. I hope there will be another book in this series!

  1. This charming book tells how a loveable bassett hound named Lunchbox saves the world from alien interference and helps out his boy's family at the same time. The book alternates between earth and a spaceship with two amusing aliens who remind me of a few people I've known. The author's humor is just right for the age group and his writing has a wry touch that adults will be amused by as well. The author has a great ear for conversation and he also knows what matters to boys and girls. I highly recommend it.

  2. Lunchbox is a basset hound who's been stolen by aliens, who change him into a garbage-machine-making machine. His new task is to change Earth's trash into a food adored by aliens and dogs: will Lunchbox and his boy solve the world's garbage crisis in the process of forming interplanetary friendships? A zany tale evolves.

  3. This is a great book! Note to parents: If your kid likes books and spends too much time in front of the TV, get them this book! True, it has weird, made up words, like rurfroo and plookie, but that's why it's a challenging, but interesting book. It's funny and the author had a great sense of what he wanted when he wrote it: a book kids and adults alike will love. Oh, and here is how to pronounce Schwozzwort: Skwoz-wort. Yeah, I know, it's a tough word to spell and pronounce right without the author saying it straight to you, which is why that is there. But anyway, GET THIS BOOK! KIDS AND ADULTS LOVE IT!

  4. I love this book! The characters are complex and charming, it's funny for kids and adults and best of all, Fields does not "talk down" to kids. He toes that difficult line between making a book accessible and interesting to children and interesting at the same time. I recommend it!

  5. This book balances the fine line between good for kids and good for adults. The author makes the story serious and funny at the same time, with an example of the fact the aliens are running out of food and they have to depend on a fat basset hound who isn't exactly the sharpest tack in the bunch, until he gets turned into a genius that could make Bill Gates look like a dummy except for the fact that he can't talk... The story moves along fluently with Nate, the owner having to help Lunchbox, the dog, build a machine, make the aliens happy, and get his parents to understand what is going on.

  1. I LOVED THE BOOK. THIS IS ONE WISE BASSETT. I WISH SOME PEOPLE HAD AS MUCH SENSE AS SWEET SHERLOCK. I'M AN ANIMAL LOVER SO HEARING ABOUT LIFE FROM HIS POINT OF VIEW WAS VERY HUMOUROUS. I CRACKED UP OVER THE TIME MANAGEMENT STORY AND WASHING THE CLOTHES. I CAN SEE MY SPOUSE DOING JUST THAT. ENJOYED THE BOOK VERY MUCH

  2. I found "Deer Aunt Peggy" to be a delightful book! It is easy to read (it's hard to put it down once you start reading it). I found it to be
entertaining and very funny! I especially enjoyed the story about "Bob gets the short straw." If you've ever had your dog look at you and you
wondered what he was thinking, this is the book for you! I highly recommend it to everyone! Ideal summer reading!
    Mattalene P. Wicker, Sanford, NC

  3. Basset Hounds are very funny dogs in many ways. DEER AINT PEGGY is a very different book about the life and times of one basset. A must for anyone who owns or has owned a Basset Hound(s).

  4. If you're a devoted dog lover--or even tolerant of the antics of dogs--you'll probably enjoy this book of amusing "letters" written by a dog to his relatives and friends. (Well, it was actually ghost written by his master.) Since most of the stories are 2 to 4 pages long, this makes a great bedside or bathroom book. The stories are in no particular order, so you can easily jump around or move on, depending on whether the story fits your mood or sense of humor.

The book is suitable for all ages. Pre-teens and teenages will probably snicker at the numerous stories with bathroom humor. I read several of the stories to my 91-year-old aunt who is mentally sharpe but bed-ridden in a nursing home. It was the first time I'd seen her laugh like that in years.

This is a great book to share or just keep lying around. It's well worth the modest price.

  5. I just finally had a chance to sit down and read some of this book and it has got to be the most unique book I have ever read. and of course being dyslexic and at least 50% southern, the way the book was written made it easier for me to read than any other book I have read in the past! (and I do read a lot!) I just LOVED this book and I would HIGHLY recommend it to ANYONE! It is just one of the best and most unique books I have EVER read! this is going to be my most favorite book of all time FOREVER! This person is a genius who wrote this book! Anyone who says this book isn't the best has to be a very negative and unhappy person. This book made me smile all the way from the inside - out! It warms your heart and makes you laugh! It is just the BEST book EVER! So get this book and enjoy it! it WILL put a smile on your face and warm your heart and you will want to tell your friends about it! it is just awesome! Don't miss this book! it is going to be one of your favorites! :)

  1. This book is absolutely charming; from the lyrical pose to the victorian-esque illustrations. It will warm hearts everywhere, whether you are a die hearted dog lover or one who believes in "happily ever after". This book will be a wonderful addition to any storytime venue - kids will love it and adults will love reading it.

Kudos to these two women for putting together such a wonderful piece of literary art!

  2. This book is hilarious and sweet and charming and clever and what are you waiting for? It's not just because it is a terrific story (told in perfect rhyme, no less) but also because it is a GREAT book to help emerging readers. Fabulous for phonemic awareness for little ones and Just. Plain. Fun!

Buy more than one or you will lose your copies to friends.

  3. As a mom, I often find myself having to repeatedly read really boring, sometimes awkwardly worded books over and over. This one was a refreshing change. My toddler loves to hear it as much as I love to read it! I'm always happy when it is the book he chooses for story time. It is a cute story with pretty illustrations and the way the words flow is wonderful!

  4. This is one of our favorite kid books. It's even a cute book for dog-lover adults. It's a very cute story with great illustrations.

  5. This is my 20 mo old son's favorite book and has been for months now. He carries it around the house calling "Ah roooo" and will ask anyone to read it to him. He loves looking at the pictures of all the dogs, pointing out the blue basset and calling out Ah rooo whenever he sees him. Ah roo was one of his first and still one of his favorite animal sounds. After having read the book (literally) hundreds of times, I am still charmed by it, although now I can recite it by memory. Great book!
