- This book was recommended to me by a friend who had recently adopted a Basenji rescue dog. I found it to be very helpful and informative, and the pictures were fun to look at!
- This book proved to be very useful to me!
- This book is a bible on working with your adopted Basenji and understanding the things to do and not do while your Basenji unpacks the luggage it carries.
- This is an excellent book about the care and ownership of an exotic breed, the basenji. These dogs clean themselves like dogs, shed tears when sad and yodel and laugh instead of bark. A beautiful, graceful and clean limbed dog, the barkless basenjis will find a place in the hearts of all who encounter them.
An ancient breed dating some 2,000 years, this African dog was the loved pet of Egyptian nobility and royalty. Basenjis appeared in ancient Egyptian artwork, e.g. paintings of the dogs and basenji shaped footstools. Even Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Underworld had a basenji head. This book introduces all to this lovable, beautiful and intelligent hound. I like the way BRAT, a basenji rescue organization is mentioned throughout the book. Care, breeding and training the dog is well researched and well written. This is an excellent tool for all, from the lay person to the well established basenji breeder and rescuer. Basenjis are beautiful, exotic dogs from their furrowed brows to their double curled tails. Independent and intelligent, this is one breed that is clearly distinct from all other breeds. Basenji lovers will be made after reading this and for folks who are familiar with the breed and already love basenjis will cherish them all the more.
- Look, if you're looking for Basenji specific books, this is not one of them. It is informative, but not on Basenjis. This book would work for any breed rescue. I was disappointed because what I wanted was a book with all the pluses and minuses of living with a Basenji. This book contained none of that information. What it did have was great tips on rescuing and living with a rescued dog. The only thing "Basenji" about it was the title and the photos.

- If you are looking for a book to give you the necessary information to show or breed basenjis, this is the book for you! There are lot's of great pics and illustrations given of good and poor breed standard. The book does contain some information on temperament but is mostly about what makes a dog a champion!
- This beautifully illustrated book brings the basenji to the forefront of readers' consciousness. The exotic African dog is indeed unique; basenjis shed tears, they yodel instead of bark and they clean themselves like cats. A spirited hound, the basenji is also notable for having the grace and agility of an antelope. Female basenjis come into heat once a year.
The basenji, a long established breed has a history spanning some 2,000 years. This book does an excellent job of introducing readers at large to this exotic little dog. From breeders and people who show their basenjis to the happy pet owner, this book is really a treasure indeed.

- It made me smile and it made me cry. For those who love dogs and believe in romance and "magic", this is must read. I enjoyed it imensely, couldn't put it down, and I have now passed it along for others to enjoy. When I finally get it back, I'm going to read it all over again.
- This book is a must for any Basenji owner/lover or any dog lover. It keeps you interested from the start and it is a "magical" book with a wonderful ending that everyone will love!! The writer creates a place for the reader that actually seems real. I finished it and really tried to listen for my beautiful basenjis to actually talk to me but I guess I will just have to keep hoping/waiting for that special one who will be able to! It is well worth your time and you will want to keep this one for your book collection to reread often. I highly recommend it!!!
- This book was wonderful! Being a past Basenji owner, I felt that parts of this book was about my dog. Veronica Anne Starbuck is a gift author, you feel as if your right there. I couldn't put the book down and just like I couldn't stop the tears from flowing. A must read!
- This book is a heart-warming, box of Kleenex tear-jerker that will make you cheer! Veronica Anne Starbuck plays emotions like a virtuoso. This book will take its readers through every possible emotion and remain a well treasured, timeless classic.
Savannah's son ends up in a dog shelter. Once a proud show basenji, the beautiful dog waits in an earthly limbo.
Enter Carolyn. Saddened over the loss of her retriever, Max, she delivers food to the animal shelter where the basenji is waiting. She has no intention of adopting another pet, but there is something...well, MAGIC about that basenji!
Woman and dog connect; the bond is cataclysmic. Once ensconsed in her home, Carolyn and her basenji make some rather startling discoveries. Her basenji, a loving, intelligent dog has unique features that really make him distinct. Is it just his wrinkled brow, double curled tail and the fact that he yodels instead of barks? Is there something magic about this dog? Whatever the case, the basenji not only brings joy to a lonely woman, he actually leads her to love.
This is a timeless classic that will remain a cherished story. It makes me think of the 1965 Lovin' Spoonful classic, "Do You Believe in Magic" and George Harrison's "Love Comes to Everyone." I can't recommend this one highly enough. It really is "magic," in a manner of speaking.
- This is truly a beautiful story and anyone, whether you have a Basenji or not (I have two sled dogs), will enjoy it. It makes you think about your own pet's "happiness". If you consider yourself a dog lover, you have to read this.

5 comments about The Basenji Revelation.
- There are few books written in the horror genre that deserve special attention. These are the treasures that possess both the power to frighten and the capacity to compel by responding to the reader's expectations and fears. The Basenji Revelation is one of these rare treasures. Simon Cleveland had fashioned a powerful drama, which although supernatural in its core never escapes actual human reality. The story is quite interesting. It combines elements of both the mythical and the modern as it charms the readers with a rich history. In the end, the author's message goes beyond the unexplained. It leaps forward in search of the symbolic nature of the super human - the one who ultimately becomes aware of all life's mysteries. And it is this leap forward that transitions the Basenji Revelation out of the routine realm of horror and marries it with the one of magical realism. A very, very good read indeed.
- I found this book an intruiging read. I disagree with another reader about giving the breed a bad name. I own a basenji myself, and anyone that owns or has been around them knows they're sweet, clever, silly little dogs. I don't think any less of St. Bernards because of "Cujo".
- This is one of the best books I've read in a while. The story seizes you immediately from the start and before you know it, you're turning the last page. This author has a wild imagination, that's for sure. There's a fully developed horror story around a 6,000 year-old Egyptian deity and the final revelation made the heirs on the back of my neck stand.
The way he explains some of the scenes, I felt as if I was part of the action. Definitely gets a high score in my book.
- I can still hear the call of the Basenji. I have a basenji in fact. No wonder it's called the barkless dog, it sounds like a female crying. This book gives a new meaning to mythological horror. It's both a contemporary mystery and psychological thriller, except it has a fully developed historical research to tie it nicely to the overall story. Before I bought it I read one of the reviews below that said something like: Try not to read it with the lights off and something about giving you the shivers. Both are very true. In one of the scenes where the psychologist is alone with the Basenji in the middle of the night, boy it freaked me out. Does anyone know anything about the Rosetta stone? Are the creature's phrases really based on the Demotic and Coptic languages from the ancient Egypt? Wow, what a book.
- The Basenji Revelation is an exceptional book. The horror portion of the book is genuinely scary. The author uses a combination of heart-pumping
action scenes, mythological references, and rich vocabulary to make the reader feel each action of the protagonist. An example is the nightmare Maggie has right before her husband lapses into his first public display of madness. For me, this episode remains one of the rare, truly frightening pieces of literature I've personally read. However, horror was not the only thing that attracted me to this book. I've been toying with the idea of getting a basenji breed for about a year. I
wanted to learn more of this particular breed, especially about its origin. When I searched online, I found good information on Wikipedia and there I read about Simon Cleveland's book. The book is rich with historical and mythological details about the breed and its link to the Egyptian culture and religion. What's really fascinating is how the author links modern society with the ancient people. In the character of Sam he reveals more than just a burnt out workaholic with mental issues. Sam is a product of the impacts of modern technology and cultural values. The wife's character, Maggie, symbolizes the natural human response to mental illness, mainly the desire to help and the confusion or lack of knowledge on how to achieve that. The book never failed to entertain me. The end is probably what I found the most compelling. It suggests much greater symbolic meaning to the book than the dramatic conclusion and I think that any reader would be impressed with it.

5 comments about Candle: A Story of Love and Faith.
- A must for a Basenji lover's library.
- A delightful story for all ages, this beautifully illustrated tale of the little Basenji who shares in the joy and wonder of the first Christmas is truly a timeless classic!
- A basenji friendly household boasted of a pair of breeding basenjis and their two adorable puppies. The senior basenjis told their puppies the story of Candle, a basenji ancestor who really did show everyone the way.
An African breed that boasts of a more than 2,000 year history, the famed "barkless" dog (basenjis yodel and make laughing noises instead), these dogs were the loved pets of Egyptian aristocracy and nobility. The story of Candle takes place in Egypt.
A lovable young basenji named Candle is the adored pet in a royal household. Basenjis, naturally intelligent and curious were aware that something wonderful and miraculous was about to take place. The "basenji network" were aware that the days of excess and idolatry were soon to be challenged; a miracle was on the way.
Candle and her owner, a young Egyptian gentleman saw the Star shining brightly in the East and knew they had to follow it....
Readers will yodel with delight as well. This is truly a wonderful family bonding book and it is certainly a beautiful illustration of love and faith. I can't recommend it highly enough. I love it! The lovely illustrations and the gentle story will captivate readers of all ages.
Candle will light a path to the hearts of all who read her story.
- This story is not only wonderful for children, but also adult basenji lovers. A must for ever family who has ever had or known a basenji. Candle will find a place in your heart forever!
- Candle is a gentle, refined Basenji who "brought a glow into human hearts when she was near." Her story explains several Basenji physical traits as relating to the birth of Christ and her journey with the wise men. This must have been written by someone who loves a Basenji as much as I love my Basenji companion. The care given to the illustrations and the joy within them captures the Basenji spirit and soul. It may seem like a child's Christmas story but anyone who loves a Basenji will delight in it. It is a small cost for something that brings deep joy and although I bought it on a whim it has become one of my most treasured books. If you know a Basenji lover, scoop this one up.

3 comments about The Secret of the Dogs.
- The Secret of the Dogs by author Rich Douglas isn't like any novel I've read before. Told through the eyes of a dog named Leroy, I was at first expecting a boring kids book with no plot, excitment or emotion. But as I soon got passed the introduction, I couldn't put the book down. The fantasy, action, mystery excitment and humor is so incredible and runs so smooth, and the way the author so marvelously shows the powerful bond between a dog and a young boy who is taking physical abuse from his father, pleased my adult mind. There are so many interesting things to read about, like the secret underground tunnels of the city park, the flaming boundary layers, the strange Johnson City Canine control, the mystery that lies in the school, and the monsterous canines of the terrifying pound, invisible to humans of course! The charecters are incredible, funny and unique, like the fluffy Pomorarian Pooky, who wears clip on earrings! Then there is the independent terrier Diggy, who collects playing cards and has a secret room underground! Ms. Quickfeet is the greyhound, a nervous, rejected dog who loves attention and even wears a clown's mask to attract humans! Oh, I love these characters! I laughed so hard, I cried!
Finally the book leads up to the exiting, emmotional climax when the dogs rescue the young boy who is abused by his own father. I must say I did shed a few tears during the last chapter. You will too.
- Four endearing canine characters embark on an oddessey to rescue one of the dog's human master while the other three strays long for the day when they will have master's of their own. But first there are dangers and a vast fantasy world in the Johnson City Canine Control Center! A story of great imagination that shows the power of love over evil. Excellent debut by author Rich Douglas, if it is his first, that I'm assuming.
- Hold on to your seats reader, this novel is filled with so much action and adventure that it could entertain a statue. Filled with exciting chases, (chapter 3 and chapter 6) wild strange rides (chapter 5)edge of your seat canine confrontations, (chapter 10 and 12), and a powerful gut wrenching ending, the book will please all. And it is filled with constant humor throughout. A must read.

2 comments about Basenji (Comprehensive Owners Guide).
- Basenjis are exotic African dogs, long hailed as the Barkless Dogs of Africa. The basenji has a long history - they were the loved and doted upon dogs of the ancient Egyptian noble gentry. Basenjis are a part of Egyptian art - basenjis were featured in paintings; people had basenji shaped footstools and Anubis, the God of the Underworld had a basenji head. (Egyptologists maintain Anubis had a jackal head as a jackal was a scavanger. In looking at the drawings of Anubis, he does indeed have the head of a basenji).
These beautiful dogs with the double curl in their tails are indeed distinctive - they laugh, cry and make a yodeling sound. Females come into season once every year. Basenjis don't shed or smell and they clean themselves the way cats do. These exotic dogs move gracefully and are known for their loyalty to their owners. Readers will come away with a wealth of information about this exotic dog and the breeding standards and care these curly tailed dogs require.
- Basenjis are indeed special dogs. We got ours as a 'rescue' from a family that didn't understand her or train her well. She was two years old when we got her and it did take a lot of patience and understanding but she is now an amazing dog full of love and loyalty. I wish we had had this book in the beginning but it has provided some helpful insight even after we finally got her trained. This is not a dog for someone who expects immediate obedience! She is almost cat like in her grooming manners and independence. Graceful when she runs, spastic when she plays. She tosses her toys in the air and her food bowl if she wants more food. Extremely smart, she knows what you are saying and listens when she wants to. Now that I know these dogs, I would have another when the time comes.

- This book is a keeper for my library. It explained a lot about the quirks, care, mating and whelping of the basenji (we are about to breed with our gorgeous girl). Recommended for those on trainer wheels in the breeding and owning of basenjis.
- This book, although small is jam packed with the greatest information for basenji owners. It is a great way to introduce the basenji to prospective owners and makes an affordable gift to send home with puppies and their new owners.
- I was very anxious to receive my book on Bansenji's.
We have a one year old Bansenji named Sadie....she is completely different than any dog we have ever had....very sweet....but also very stubborn.....the book was very helpful in learning more about this breed of dog....very useful in training her and myself. i would recommend this book to anyone who has a basenji or are thinking of getting one....lots of very helpful, useful suggestions and great photos as well.

- Although it is an older book, the tips in it are still extremely useful today. Not only does it give a shortened yet vivid history of the breed but also has vital tips for training. I have begun training my basenji puppy from the steps outlined in this book and he was been doing wonderfully! The pictures are also a really great addition. If you own, are planning to own, or even thinking of owning a basenji be sure to get this book so you know what you're getting into with this unique breed & how to deal after you get one!
- I bought the book to learn training techniques specific to a Basenji, and the book failed on that account. However, the book gets 2 stars because it gives a great description of the history of Basenji's, and their personalities. I found the book is better suited for you friends and family (that don't live with you), to explain why your Basenji acts so "weird"... but as for training ideas, don't waste your time/money.
