  1. Very watered down. Not many useful information.

  2. breed specific book tells it like it is to own an alaskan malamute. good advice presented in clear readable style with many photo illustrations. covers training, grooming, breeding, breed specific health care, and showing. you really couldn't want more in a book in this price range. in fact this book seems to have the answers for your tough questions about this breed!

  1. I lOVE this book!!!! I got it for Christmas and WOW!!!! This book has BEAUTIFUL PICS!!!! I love it SO much I REALLY recommend this picture and information full book!!!!!

  2. I felt cheated when I got this book.

It is not a book about Malamutes, contrary to the title. It is a book about general dog care, and not a very good one at that. Except for the pictures and a brief description about the breed, it could as well as be about any other breed, as the emphase seems to be on home and show dogs, and definitely not on Arctic dogs

The same publisher has published essentially the same book with a different title ('Siberian Huskies') and a different author name.

Anyone with a serious interest in Alaskan Malamutes should find this book useless.

  1. This book was well written with a lot of detail. I have read many books on Alaskan Malamutes and feel this is the most informative on the breed. I've learned more about Malamutes in this book than any other. Great pictures.

  2. The book gives a good overview on the history and temperment of the breed. A good book to buy before purchasing a Alaskan Malamute.

  3. I'm a first time Malamute owner and I must admit that this book is generally good for knowing most facts about the breed. I thought, however, that the book lacked information on how to properly keep a Malamute in a run outdoors. I also thought strange that a longtime owner such as the author would not recommend keeping such a breed outdoors when it's clearly proven to like it better outside than indoors, especially in the winter time when houses are heated and can cause depression for the dog. Other than that, the book is rather good and the pictures are beautiful.

  4. I especially liked the selection of the top winning dog in the history of the breed, Ch. Nanuke's Takes No Prisoners, to grace the cover. The information in the book is accurate and the authors well versed in the breed.

  5. I'm a first time malamute owner. I read the whole book in a couple of hours and found that it does not contain any more information than what I already knew from reading various websites on the Internet. It lacks details and insights. For example, the section on feeding basically said to follow the breeder's guide and does not provide any diet recommendation. Further, a major section of the book is about showing dogs at dog shows. Being a first time owner, the last thing on my mind is showing the dog. I'm more concern about raising and training my puppy. Overall, the book was a waste of money for me.

  1. For a first time mal owner this book would be just Ok, not one of the top three to buy, however, I personally am a history buff and this is a must and it gives back ground of why mals act the way they do or do not do something. I like it.

  2. This is an Excellent book on Alaskan Malamutes. We presently own 3 Mals and are getting our first show Malamute in Dec. of 1997. I highly recommend this book to those who are getting their first Alaskan Malamute or people that already have one. It covers everything from the beginning of the Alaskan Malamute, showing conformation, obedience, medical problems, to sledding with these wonderful dogs.

  3. The New Complete Alaskan Malamute is exactly what the title implies, a compendium of facts and relative information about the breed. Covered are aspects of the history, personality of the breed, sledding, backpacking, medical/genetic issues, grooming, the breed Standard interpreted, a glossary of terms, and much much more. For the prospective or fisrt-time owner, and even long term fancier, this book is a gem for the wealth, depth and breadth of information. Acquisition of this notable work is a must for all fanciers.

  4. If you already own a malamute or are thinking of getting one this book prvides the best guide for you. It not only tells you the pros about the breed but also the cons, and gives you a realistic look on what the breed is about. Ignorance leads to problems with malamutes so the best way to prepare yourself is HAVE THIS BOOK!!! Remember Owning A Malamute Is Not A Right! It Is A Privillage! Jamie Wiatowski, Mimmenuk Alaskan Malamutes

  5. This book is full of great history on the breed and information on how to show and sled your dog (once you get to that stage in growth and training!). If you have or are bringing home a new puppy it is not the book for you. I searched for this book because it was recommended to me. I think now that recommendation was only because this certain breeder had a few "mentions" in the book. I am looking for NOW information on my new puppy. This book is great for my friends who stop by -- they look at the pictures.

  1. As a prospective Mal owner I found this book very imformative, more so than some of the larger and more expensive books which I have in my collection. Especially the section ARE YOU THE RIGHT PERSON FOR A MAL. I found this especially interesting as a Mal is not suitable for just anyone. A well written book with plenty of good information which some other books don't cover enough. I recommend this book to anyone, new and old Mal owners alike.

  2. Briefly..
We read this book, and others before adopting our Malamute. We found it to be right on the money. Especially important are the parts of the book that discuss on whether you personally are up to adopting a Malamute.
Personally, I wouldn't have another Dog, period. But they are absolutely not for everybody. Better read this book and some others before getting one of these precious and gorgeous animals. If you decide not to, it makes a beautiful addition to any library.

  3. I have owned 2 Malamutes & this is the most informative book I've every read about them. I am getting a new pup this spring & can't wait to use some of the ideas in the book. These are the most beautiful dogs on earth & they love people, they are also the smartest!

  4. This book clearly states the pros and cons of having a Malamute. They are as discribed. I wish there was more training information in the book. The history is nice, but more content would be effective. The feeding and other care needs more elaboration. Good overview.

  5. This is a pretty good book about the breed. If you're thinking about getting a Malamute, this is probably a good buy. However, there may be a better book out there...
