- Just finished reading the book which kept me on the edge for a day and a half. Never knew that so much could happen on Hampton Avenue which only a St. Louisan would bring this city to life for me. It held my interest throughout, as I couldn't solve all those murders. It was a book that once you start you can't put it down. Absolutely loved it!
- Great read. I couldn't put it down. Ms. Applewhite breathed true life into her characters.
- Dimond Redding, former Vietnam War field nurse, moves to St. Louis for some peace and quiet, thinking to retire there. But that's not to be. Two weeks later, a man is murdered in the apartment across the hall from Di. Di suspects the investigating detective is focusing on the wrong person when he arrests a friend of one of the tenants in Di's building. Elvin Suggs, Green Beret during the Vietnam War, is reeling from his wife's demands for a divorce. Suggs takes his dog and heads to St. Louis to visit Di, his best friend's widow. Suggs, a private investigator, suspects something afoul when more people are murdered in Di's apartment building, including his wife. When Suggs is accused of his wife's murder, he decides to investigate on his own and soon finds his own life in danger.
Applewhite brings focus to Vietnam vets via the characters in this book, stressing their outlook on the war and the role they played in it as well as the lives they lead and the friendships they cherish from that time period. This whodunit has plenty of suspects with several shifty characters, all with secrets of their own, occupying the apartment building. Suggs is an appealing character with a warm heart and zest for life. His dog Vanna adds an appealing dimension to the read, as does Cobra, the homeless Vietnam vet Suggs helps.
- Not many books allow for the kind of cultural flavor that this book offers. It lets us experience the "hidden" crime in St. Louis, MO that other states simply don't know about. When you read this book, you'll feel like you know St. Louis a little bit better--so you'll remember to bring your gun.

- One of the best airedale books written by 40+ year veteran breeders. Chapters include information on the breed today, both here and abroad, reports of specific medical developments, whelping, and the versatility of the Airedale as a hunting dog, obedience performer, show dog, and family companion.

- Excellent book. As I would go from page to page I would think of my own childhood with my dog Rufus. It kept my intrest to the very end.
- This is a wonderful, heartwarming story that will make you laugh out loud, and probably have a tear or two as well. The writing is so descriptive the reader can easily have a mental picture of the town, the boys, Bum, and their adventures. This would be a great family film!
It was very refreshing to be taken back to a time when what mattered most could be found right at home.
If you've ever been young or loved a dog, I recommend you read this book! Read it to your kids or grandkids, or-have them read to you! You will not be disappointed, and you won't want to put it down.
Enjoy!!
- Received book from Amazon and read that day - hard to put down.Being from the country with river, paddocks and bush, this book took me back to another era of innocent childhood. Later in life my ownership of Airedale Terriers added that dimension also experienced by the Author and his father!
With the substance and variety contained in this marvellous book, one hopes a movie will follow.

- The dog on the cover is the exact image of our current Airedale, exhibits the true Airedale characteristics, is an all around companion, exhibiting his own bravery and the book brought out these characteristics so well. We love the breed, although we have had three Irish Setters in our lives, and three Airedales. Airedales have a devoted and well deserved following. The breed has the qualities which Bum exhibited and all Airedale fans can relate to Bum and his life. He brought pleasure and concern, joy and companionship beyond any other breed. Our first Airedale came to us in 1962 and Bum's bravery would have been replicated by any of our Airedales. "Where the Water is Cold" provided many warm stories of the companionship of an Airedale.
- What's not to like about anything Airedale? Lovely little addition to my growing Aire-library.

- This is the most complete Airedale book, without a lot of the extraneous general dog information found in other Airedale books. Has a good history and description of the breed as well as general care, ie for their difficult terrier coat. Good advise for first time owners and good reference for even experienced oweners.
- As an owner of an Airedale teenager who has already searched the earth for information, I was not too chuffed by this book. What it does is offer a lot of general information which I happened to know already before purchasing this book. It certainly is a good reading material for those who do not know that much about the breed but that was not me. Yet since there is not much of book resources on Airedales, it is good to have this one than to have nothing.

- I was pleasantly surprised by this book on Airedales. For an inexpensive book, it contained great "breed specific" information on raising and training an Airedale. It also had lots of great photographs. It is, however, written in a manner which scared off my wife from the breed -- sort of no-nonsense, this is a big decision, don't take it lightly, an Airedale is not for everyone -- kind of way.
- "Take equal parts of intelligence, strength, heart, and loyalty. Add a generous portion of humor, sensitivity, and high energy. Throw in a pinch of stubborness and feistiness. Pack this inside a handsome 50- to 70-pound dog . . . and you have the Airedale Terrier."
With this humorous introduction, dog trainer and author Dorothy Miner begins her book on Airedale Terriers, amusing those readers who have experience with this wonderful breed of dog and giving fair warning to those considering getting one. What follows this opening -- while it may maintain the same light-hearted tone -- is an interesting, readable book that is tightly packed with information. In the dozen-plus chapters that follow, Miner examines the breed in detail: the Airedale's history, considerations in puchasing an Airedale, basics and beyond in regard to raising and/or breeding Airedales, thoughts on owner responsibility, and more! With a well-thought-out table of contents and a concise index, the book is a breeze to use, whether reading from cover to cover or looking for an answer to a specific question. From Miner's coverage of the topic, it's apparent she knows her stuff about dogs -- and Airedales in particular. Her words, like her in-person work, exude a calm, logical attitude -- an approach that is inspiring to the new dog owner. AIREDALE TERRIERS by Dorothy Miner is the kind of training manual that readers will turn to for new-puppy guidance and one they'll return to again and again as their dogs grow.
- I have owned Airedale Terriers since 1979 and have bred them since 1985. This book captures all the essential information about Airedales and organizes it in a very readable manner. I send the book home with every Airedale puppy that I sell. This book gets my highest recommendation.
- My husband and I recently got an Airedale puppy (10 weeks old) and have now had him for 5 weeks. Right before we went to the breeder to get him we both did some research about helpful books etc. This book was on the top of the list on the Airedale websites that I looked at. It was a great resource and full of information that will be helpful from puppy to adult including care of the dog, grooming, feeding etc. It was easy to read and included many amusing pictures of Airedales.
- This book gives the reader the general knowlege of the Airdale breed. Especially for those who are raising them from pups.
