1 comments about Law and the Long War: The Future of Justice in the Age of Terror.
- Benjamin Wittes, a former editorial writer for the Washington Post, has written the indispensable book on reforming US policy on detainees at Guantanamo. His exhaustive reading of everything that has been said, by the government, by the detainees themselves uncoerced in open hearings, so to give the best available portrait of the men at Guantanamo today - not those who were there in the first years, but those who are there now - is worth the price of the book. His policy prescriptions are well thought out, moderate, temperate, and are a special call to Congress to stop sniping from the sidelines and actually decide what to do. I do not think that anyone can have a serious opinion about what to do about detainee policy without reading this book.

5 comments about Leaderless Jihad: Terror Networks in the Twenty-First Century.
- Marc Sageman gets it. He explains in detail how the third wave of terrorists are more apt to adopt their extremist views through social discourse and the need to fit in. Many people believe that this war is ideologically based i.e. people are driven out of religious doctrine. This may hold true for the al-Qaeda leadership, who wish to return to the 6 and 700s , but for the vast majority of new internet "terrorists", they just want to be cool; they essentially want to be fearless ninjas.
That being said, I would disagree slightly with Mr. Sageman about US policy. It is true that this war can't be continually fought with guns and tanks, but given the time-frame context of 9/11 something had to be done to wipe out training camps, safe havens, and the upper echelon leadership. Now that this has essentially (with the obvious and unfortunate exclusion of the two top tier guys) been done, it's time to engage the Middle East with evolving tactics. Opinion polls show that folks in the Muslim Ummah admired the West for its technology and freedoms, including the right to choose leaders, but they fear western domination. It is incumbent upon our leaders to show that while extremely difficult, in the end the US as a whole are friends with Iraq and Afghanistan and we are there now to help them and to rid them of terrorist strongholds for everybody's mutual benefit. Despite all the turmoil and destruction, roughly 50% of Iraqis feel that the US did the right thing. That is saying something considering the numbers are lower in the US and much lower in Europe; places where people have never had to really endure such hardship in the past 50 years, but are free nevertheless.
- As an officer in the Air Force and analyst for DOD, I can not say strongly enough that this book is a must read for all Americans. Sageman diligently puts together a solid argument that considers context, scientific appreciation, individual and group psychology, and Middle East conditions. This book is extremely helpful in understanding the threat of Islamic terrorism and is vital for Americans to read if we are to appreciate, as a country united, the complexities of the terrorist threat. Bottom line: the threat of terrorism is real, but the greatest threat to America is how we choose to respond to it. Although we are succeeding in killing and disrupting the bad guys, as we must, we are possibly loosing the battle in regards to Muslim perspective towards the U.S.(hearts and minds). Policy implications in the book are spot in. Great book...must read!
- Marc Sageman knows jihadis first-hand. He trained Taliban for the CIA, and as a forensic psychiatrists he interviewed captured jihadis.
His comparison of the threat of local moslims in the USA and Europe is very interesting. So is his analysis of the person and his context behind the jihadi.
Sageman sees jihadis as a lunatic fringe, which should be reassuring, but is not. He proposes a US pullout from Iraq, and Israeli-Palestinian peace (keep dreaming!) as a way to de-escalate the tension between the jihadis and the US.
- This seems to me an overrated, padded book, with little insight but much fodder for the author's future grant applications. There is some useful culling of statistical reports. The psychological profiles teach less than nothing about the individual jihadis. Sageman's main point, that terrorism is now decentralized and needs to be prevented by adequate psychological massaging of potential recruits, is undercut by his prefatory scene-setting admissions: the jihad has been reduced to low-level cells that lack adequate technical and planning skills precisely because the high end leadership has been run to ground and killed. Of course they could rise and reorganize (if they have not to some extent done so) if we give them territory sufficient to shelter their activities and let down our guard after reading Sageman's book.
- This is an excellent book and provides numerous examples about looking at the root causes of terrorism. The author uses a somewhat scientific approach to looking at the root causes of terrorism, for example, he looked at the ages of terrorists, their education and background to debunk current thinking that terrorists have been disenfrancised. Instead he looks at radical islamists/terrorist as having been influenced by radical peers, the Iraqi invasion and the internet chat rooms. There is much to be said about "leaderless jihad" because terrorists evolve not as recruits of a central body but as separate groups that take the jihad on their own.He further defines future efforts and approaches to combat this "leaderless jihad".

5 comments about Brotherhood of Warriors: Behind Enemy Lines with a Commando in One of the World's Most Elite Counterterrorism Units.
- I absolutely loved this book! I was hoping for more details on Israeli Special Forces, but I understand due to the sensitivity of the disclosure of information, that wasn't possible. However, it was still a riveting read and amazing what Cohen went through. I enjoyed it so much I finished it cover to cover in less than two days.
- I bought this book hoping to see if Aaron received any Krav Maga training and what he thought about it, and I got what I wanted. His descriptions of the Krav training were terrific. It's pretty aggressive stuff, always testing your determination. But he also tells a compelling story. Growing up in LA, seeing his parents hang out with the stars, he needed some direction in life. He, of course, goes to Israel, joins the military and tries out for their special forces. Very gritty descriptions of the hell they put him through, the long-distance march, the heat, becoming delirious. He details some of the Israeli special forces missions, which are fascinating. I loved the story where he pretends to be a reporter "interviewing" a bad guy. Then he unleashes some pent-up aggression. I wanted more special forces stories. But I realize he can only tell what he is allowed to tell.
- Aaron Cohen is the epitome of strength and courage. He's a man who wouldn't let anything stop him from achieving his goal; making aliyah to Israel and joining the toughest counterterrorism military units in the world. The reader gets an inside view of Israeli special forces training along with Israeli history, culture, and values. Cohen tells it like it is, very in-your-face. It was very hard to put down and an intense fast read. One of my favorite moments was when Cohen returned to the kibbutz and Gali greeted him in Hebrew and treated him like a fellow warrior. Very touching, inspirational, and fascinating story.
- I found this book to be very interesting. It takes you thru the life of an individual who leaves CA to return to Israel to become a special operator. It was interesting to read of the differences between American and Israeli training methods. Easy to read, well worth the money.
- A good read and a fascinating story, Cohen becomes a man in the IDF and makes it to a special unit. The story brought me back to my days in the IDF. Some details are a bit exaggerated for effect or inaccurate but it doesn't take from the quality of the story.

5 comments about Party of Defeat.
- A must for every American to read. It gives in detail just what is happening in our country and who is responsible for this happening.
This book should be a standard reading for all High School Students
across our land.
- In this thoroughly researched and heavily footnoted book, Horowitz and Johnson set forth and explicate with exacting precision the relentless campaign the American Left and the Democratic Party have pursued to discredit George W. Bush and the War on Islamic Fascism. Unfortunately many, if not most Americans have forgotten the details of how the Democrats and the Left have undermined our country's response to Islamic radicals beginning with the Carter administration.
The authors clearly organize their thesis into 5 sections: The Path to 9-11, The Response to 9-11, Why America Went to War, The War Against the War, and Conclusion. They demonstrate with unassailable factual narrative how Presidents Carter and Clinton, in concert with an anti-war leftist establishment and willing accomplices both in the mainstream media and the Democratic Party refused to confront our enemies, leading inexorably to the 9-11 attacks.
This was itself inexcusable, but it was unfortunately only a prelude to the shocking and unprecedented betrayal of our forces in the field - first in Afghanistan, then in Iraq. The Democrats first voted to authorize military action in Iraq using the same intelligence information the President had at his disposal, and then not only rescinded their support of our military while they were actively engaged in battle, but launched a full-scale political attack on their commander-in-chief, branding him a liar and a war criminal. This despicable and treasonous behavior has fractured America's resolve, damaged our troops' morale, and weakened the President's ability to prosecute the war. Top-ranking Democratic leaders have demonstrated by their statements and actions that they fail utterly to understand the nature of this war and its implications.
Every American owes it to themselves to become familiar with this material so that they can combat the misinformation campaign being waged internally - if unwittingly by some - on behalf of our enemies. Horowitz and Johnson have produced a tour de force analysis of what is quite possibly the most serious political betrayal in American history.
- Americans who care about the future of our country and the future of freedom in the democracies of the world must read Party of Defeat by Horowitz and Johnson. The book follows the events leading up to the War on Terror and the events that followed. The authors prove with hard evidence and meticulous documentation that the War in Iraq was a necessary war and one that was supported by Democrats and Republican and most Democracies around the globe.
The authors show though exact quotes and voting records how the Democrats in congress have undermined America's ability to win the war from the first few weeks into the conflict. The President and Commander in Chief has been under relentless attacks from the Democrats and their sympathizers in the main stream media. They show how the Democrats have provided our enemies with enormous propaganda to hurt America's standing in the world, and how their words and actions have demonized our military.
Our freedom is a fragile thing that has been paid for by the lives of countless men and women over the years since the nations founding. Islamic extremists do not believe in human freedom and their goal is to establish a religious caliphate and spread radical Islam around the world. Democrats think that to abandon Iraq and bring our soldiers home will be the end of the war. All you have to do to realize this will not happen is to listen to the words of our enemies. War will be brought to American soil and nothing will stop the radicals from pursuing their goal of world domination.
America must wake up to this threat. Every great civilization has eventually been brought down by barbarians who have no respect for life or freedom. Will we leave Iraq to these barbarians? Will we let the radicals grow stronger until they have nuclear bombs? The Iranian President has threatened to wipe Israel off the map and to do the same to America whom he calls the big Satan. These radicals are haters and if given the chance will kill anyone who does not agree with them.
The Party of Defeat is the most important book of 2008 and every American should read it and then decide which political party will protect this country and which one will surrender to the terrorists.
- The left has always had a hard time with Horowitz since he was one of their own in the sixties. His Jewish parents were communists and he himself was a proponent of Marxism at a younger and less mature age. As he matured he recognized the inconsistencies and failing policies of the left demonstrated not only by North Korea, East Germany, the former Soviet Union and other failed communistic/socialistic societies but even those currently being pushed by people as contemporary as Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.
This book exposes the true hard left core of the Democratic party and why it's positions on Iraq and most other political issues are a minimum of ineffective but more likely destructive to the country. The incredible and inspiring success of the USA is the freedom that it allows it's citizens to be the best they can be. Under Marxism or Socialism the power belongs to the bureaucrats and they will tell you what you should be and where you should live.
Central planning (read nationalized healthcare, oil, etc.) has never worked and will never work. Democrats believe in big government - Republicans, Libertarians, and most Independents believe in the individual. This difference in political philosophy is why the Democratic Party is not just the Party of Defeat but the party to be defeated.
- Intelligence failures, doctored intelligence, spin, lies, deception, are but some of the charges leveled by the hysterical, emotional, left, and the media. Facts and history are obscured by rhetoric. Little wonder Americans and the world are confused.
Horowitz and Johnson slice through the fog of deception like a laser. Facts, timelines, and historical events are used to debunk much, if not all of the propaganda swirling around the November elections. Little wonder that some readers (assuming that they did read PARTY OF DEFEAT) have posted one star reviews, containing rants instead of valid criticism.
PARTY OF DEFEAT is a must read for all Americans planning to vote. Facts are facts, regardless how they contradict political positions and preconceived ideas.

5 comments about Scorpia (Alex Rider Adventure).
- Scorpia is a very creative book and Anthony Horowitz did a wonderful job writing it! It was an amazing book becasue of the great details on the characters, the suspense, and the different happenings in every chapter. I give this a book a 5 star rating and this book is in the action genre. I think the best age group for this book is about 10 to 17. Alex Rider, the thirteen year old spy, is thrown when hearing that his father was an assassin and worked for Scorpia with Yassen Gregorovich, but was what Yassen told him the real truth?
- I have read all of the Alex Rider books up to this one and think that this was one of the best. The author has an amazing way with coming up with interesting villains and diabolical (if not sometimes ridiculous)plots for them to put to the test. This was the first book in the series that I thought had some genuinely suspenseful moments (namely the landing of the plane with the sports team). It also had quite a few multidimensional characters. However, there were a few negative aspects to this book. These include the fact that villians have something seriously against just shooting Alex and being done with it(with the exception of the sniper of course)and the second to last chapter. I mean was it really necessary to make *SPOILERS AHEAD* John Rider such a good guy? And if so, I find it very unrealistic that Mrs. Jones persisted in lying to Alex and making him believe that his father worked for Scorpia!
Even so, this was a well written book with a good plot and in my opinion, is worth 4 (or 4.5) stars out of 5.
- Scorpia by Anthony Horowitz.
Alex Rider is devastated when he learns that his dad did not die in a plane crash and his uncle was murdered in a secret agent mission. He has to find the truth about his family. He has the opportunity to go to Venice with Tom his best friend he jumps at it. In Venice he finds Scorpia and Miss Rothman who is one of the leaders of Scorpia. Miss Rothman has a plan called Invisible Sword that will kill many people. Alex betrays MI6, which he risked his life for 3 times before, and joins Scorpia as a contract killer. Alex must find out more about his father and about someone's past that might change his life forever.
I loved this book because it had a suspenseful, dramatic ending that made me think that the last page was missing. Scorpia is a great book about betrayal with complex plot and realistic dialog. I felt like I was right next to Alex in every scene. My favorite part was when Alex was going to drown under Venice's sewers to get away from Nile and Miss Rothmen. I would recommend this book to anyone that would like a powerful suspenseful storyline with a heart-racing ending.

- Scorpia
By: Anthony Horowitz
For 14-year-old spy Alex Rider, everything changes when he finds out about his father's involvement in Scorpia, a highly wanted criminal organization. Caught up between M16 and Scorpia, he doesn't know which side he should take. To make matters even worse he learns from Scorpia about some of the horrible things his father has done. Not knowing if Scorpia is telling the truth, Alex joins Scorpia. This time when trouble strikes, he will be alone, without M16 and their fancy gadgets.
With so many exciting turning points and cliffhangers this was my favorite book in The Alex Rider Adventures. Scorpia is filled with action, fighting and adventure. I couldn't put this book down because there were stunning moments everywhere in the book.
Although it takes a few chapters until this book gets really exciting and to the point, it's well worth the wait. This is one of those books you could just read all day. I recommend this book to any teen that likes fighting, action, and adventure.
If you like the Cherub series, you'll like Scorpia. This book will have you wanting to read all the other Alex Rider books.

5 comments about Antichrist: Islam's Awaited Messiah.
- This books presents the coming antichrist in a different light. It teaches that he will be Islamic.
The scholarship, organization, and material is fascinating. It is well worth the read just to understand more about Islamic end time beliefs. It presents the Koran and other Islamic writings in the appropriate light as false.
I do not agree with the author though. The Bible clearly teaches that the antichrist will arise from a restored Roman Empire. He will be European most likely.
- This is an eye opening book, especially in conjunction with the bood "Politically Incorrect Guide to ISLAM." I read the PIG book first, then this one. Reading both together was amazingly eye opening.
- Joel Richardson has drawn wrong conclusions biblically regarding the coming Anti-Messiah. He and you would be far better served by reading "The AntiChrist and a Cup of Tea" by Tim Cohen, in which, by the way, Mr. Cohen identifies the coming AntiChrist as a living prince of Roman lineage who also happens to descend directly from Islam's Mohammed! Unlike Mr. Richardson, Mr. Cohen offers hard evidence for his views, and is apparently not speculating on this issue of who the AntiChrist will be.... You must read Mr. Cohen's book if you really want to understand this subject! The Antichrist and a Cup of Tea
- I'm confused about this book...
Muslims are waiting for Jesus (peace be upon him) as the messiah, who will kill Dajjal (anti-christ). Imam Mahdi is a secondary figure that helps Jesus against the anti-christ.
- This book provides a interesting look into the Islamophobic world of Christian fundamentalist ideology. The fact that the back of this book contains a positive review by Walid Shoebat the con man and pretend "former PLO terrorist" (who fleeces money from people to give lectures on his non-existent "PLO terrorist" past and spread hatred of Islam ) is telling in and of it itself.

5 comments about Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil.
- This book is the best explanation yet for why the executive level of government committed the 9-11 false flag operation. Being an engineer, the physics of 9-11 is what got me asking questions. But for most peope this will not be compelling for they lack physics training. So this book is a outstanding in the sense that it proves 9-11 was an inside job with everything other than physics. So this book can wake up more people to 9-11 truth than any other source in my opinion. And the book is written like a legal case. You could hand the book to a lawyer and put cheney in jail, if it wasnt for the corrupt legal imunity of government. Cant rate this one highly enough. 5 stars just doenst do it justice. It deserves ten.
- With the referenced facts laid out in this book, there is NO DOUBT why no one was put under oath at the 911 hearings!!!
- Michael Ruppert's "Crossing The Rubicon" is nothing less than a masterpiece. It was the first book I read that put 9/11 and the anthrax letters in context. It's a long book, over 600 pages, and I did not intend to read it all, but each chapter left me hungry for more information. This is an investigative book that encompasses much more than 9/11. It explains the financial and oil crises the US is in and the geopolitical strategy the neo-cons have developed to keep all the big lies alive. It explains the war games and Dick Cheney's complicity. If you are an American and you CAN read, then this book is a MUST read. Understand the era in which you live and you will understand the crises in which most of us will die.
- While this book contains a lot of information that I hadn't heard elsewhere and was occasionally very interesting, it contains a lot of what I consider to be extraneous information. Extended quotes from third parties take up page after page, making me believe that producing a thick book was important to the author.
Nevertheless, the overview of 9/11 time lines and events as they unfolded make it hard to believe the official story of 9/11--that much is beyond question, if only half of what this author writes is true.
- This is an incredibly disturbing book, but does dovetail
with issues that disturbed me before I read it. I agree
with others there are a lot of dots and not all are
well connected. Nevertheless, I don't want to rehash what others
have said, but make a few points.
The WTC was struck on 9-11. The Patriot Act, one individual
listed as the lead author, is over 340 pages, was passed
Oct 24. One and a half months later. How? How can something
complex be done in that time, especially with the confusion
and activity surrounding those events. I have wondered
if the Patriot Act wasn't already on the shelf waiting to
be pulled out.
The author points to the Daschle anthrax as being of CIA
origin. Interestingly, Richard Preston's "The Demon in the
Freezer" hints that this bioweapon was very sophistocated,
and may have fingerprints pointing to a USA origin.
On page 23 Ruppert refers to the need to reduce the world's
population by 4 billion (it may soon need to be 5 billion!)
To do this, bioweapons are needed. To spare infrastructure
and livestock, there aren't many candidates -- smallpox would
seem to be the most likely choice. And it seems that smallpox is
at large in unknown labs (again, see Preston's book). I am
an Inf Dz specialist and had the opportunity to study under
some of those who "eradicated" smallpox, and am somewhat familiar
with that story. One concern for anyone who opens that Pandora's
box is whether the vaccines will be effective to what may turn
out to be a bioengineered strain. On page 158, reference is
even made to a ethnospecific bioweapon.
In the end, I have more questions unanswered than answered. But
who could even invent this stuff?

Skeleton key
The book I just read was one out of five books of the series Alex Rider written by Anthony Horowitz. The book I read was called Skeleton key. Alex Rider saves the world again even though he is a young teenager. This book is a thrilling page turner and you will not want to stop reading! This book is all you will concentrate on while you read. Who ever likes spy and mystery books will love this story!
This great story starts off in a Cessna Skyhawk Sp coming in for a land at Cayo Esqueleto (Skeleton Key) I love how this book is always a mystery when you turn the pages. It is always very exciting as you read! The men in the plane were looking at a thermal intensifier. Things were going just the way they planed.
Unfortunately it was going to be kind of hard to land on the runway. But luckily there were two lights at the beginning of the runway. That was a little about the beginning of the book. But here is where the book gets exciting! Alex Rider is spying on a man named Alexei Sarav (bad guy). As Alex is spying in Sarav's mansion he gets caught. Alex Rider is held in Sarav's old horse shed, but manages to escape. (Man Alex is good!)
Now Alex has run into a big obstacle, to stop a nuclear bomb in England. All right I'm not going to tell anymore details about the book because I don't want to ruin the ending to the book. I really encourage people to read this great book and even the rest of the series because it's great too! So if you get the chance read the book Skeleton Key!
- I am an English teacher reviewing this series for student consumption. I think it is an excellent series, especially for adolescent boys. The girls, however, enjoy it too.
- I keep reading these books because I like that the characters are sneaky and mysterious. My first impression about the character was that Alex was a courageous and strong kid. He completed 3 dangerous missions in the past and survived. I think that is incredible. There was a lot of description and conversations in the book. He even talked to professional spies or killers. The author describes very well by using many figurative languages like similes and metaphors. One day I read for 80 minutes. I'm going to tell you a brief summary of the book. Alex Rider go sent on a mission to find a nuclear weapon that can destroy Russia in 1 blow. When Alex was snooping around for some clues, he saw a killer that he had faced in the past. He got caught but he found the mastermind behind the evil plot. After this brief summary I hope you would read this book. I thought this was one of the best Alex Rider book I have ever read. I don't really like mystery books, but this book changed my mind. This book is a thrilling adventure and I would definently read other books by this author.
- I'm surprised that the Kindle store has these and not Artemis Fowl. I am one of the few child Kindle owners, and surprised at the somewhat limited selection. But it's good that they have theese books, at any rate.
I am looking at the actual paper-and-ink version sitting in my bookcase.
Alex is a very logical, mature charachter. He knows how to get things done in the spy world, a world where everyone is suspect and no one is ever your partner for long. The situations he gets himself into are suspenseful, to say the least.
I like how the author seems to demonstrate all the knowledge that he wants his charachter to have. For instance, when Alex was diving, he observed all of the correct diving protocall. If Alex would have headed straight for the surface from his depth, he would have gotten the bends. However, I believe that Alex was diving partnerless? I'm not sure, but I think you are supposed to always dive with a partner. Maybe Alex was going against the rules (again). Not that his going against the rules is bad in most cases. Obviously.
"Ryan" has probably already written a review on one of these books, expressing his hatred of them, and I wouldn't blame him. Some parts of the Alex Rider books seemed slightly childish to me, and to him they must seem downright ridiculous.
Perfect for the gifted fifth grader or the average sixth or seventh grader. Maybe not so much for the gifted seventh graders (or the average tenth graders as it were).
- Skeleton Key is just the next twist in the Alex Rider series. This book sets the stage for what will happen in future novels! The writing is wonderful! Horowitz is great at building not only a plot, but also at keeping your attention on the story. The Rider series also allows the reader to pick the series up at any time and be up on the action.

3 comments about Staying Safe: The Complete Guide to Protecting Yourself, Your Family, and Your Business.
- I travel abroad on business frequently, finally there is a book that gives me real advice on how to protect myself. Thanks Mr. Aviv. I recommend it to everyone. I only wish employers would give it out to their employees.
- While I am not an international business person, I do enjoy saving my skin. I saw this book in a store one day and immediately added it to my list. It was certainly worth reading.
Juval Aviv first addresses what he feels to be the most important battleground in staying safe -- your very own thinking. Settling for more dangerous behavior because it saves you time, money, or the "hassle" of paying attention to your surroundings is what Aviv would most passionately warn against.
From there Aviv discusses almost all aspects of staying safe: survival and escape strategies for all kinds of events, travel safety in foreign countries and on airplanes, identity theft, and those pesky carjackings. Here are a couple favorite strategies -- when yelling for help, yell "Fire" instead of "Help!" People are more likely to come to your aid. And if you're in your car and a carjacker hops in the passenger seat, take your keys and throw them out of your door as far as you can. Now what's he going to do?
In actuality, of course, most of us do not need to incorporate EVERY recommendation of Aviv into our own lifestyles. Most of us do not need to open our mail in an isolated area, nor will we likely remember many of Aviv's tips if we actually find ourselves in the middle of a terrorist incident. Many of Aviv's concepts, however, can be very helpful, if only in a more general sense. And, for the international executive, government official, or prominent public figure, Staying Safe is a fantastic resource. I would also suggest J.J. Luna's book, How to be Invisible for these individuals.
If these ideas interest you, then you will enjoy this book.
- Not quite as good as I had assumed. Common Sense stuff & I would not buy it again.
