2 comments about The Professor and the Prostitute And Other True T.
- The Professor and The Prostitue and Other Tales of Murder and Madness was GREAT! This is a book of short stories of true crime. You never know exactly who your loved ones, your neighbors or your local doctors really are! I have a few favorite stories from this book including "The Professor and the Prostitute", "From a Nice Family", "The Strange Death of the Twin Gynecologists", "A Tragedy on Eighty-ninth Street", "The Transexual, the Bartender and the Suburban Princess" and "Dented Pride". A must for all true crime lovers if you can find it!
- The writing level of this book is junior-high to put it kindly. Not to mention the various stories are thinly researched. In the Douglas/Bendict case, much of what was known to be rumour is stated as fact, and some factual events were mis-interpreted. If you want to know about the murder of Robin Benedict (and it is a fascinating case), "Missing Beauty" is much more well-written and thoroughly researched.
I dont know as much about the other cases reported in this book, but the poor writing style coupled with the errors and gaps in the Benedict story make them very suspect.

4 comments about Cults That Kill: Probing the Underworld of Occult Crime.
- I read this book about 9 months ago for a research paper that I did on the negative effects of Satanism on American society. I remember being very engrossed in the book. It was well written and clearly explained all of the reasons people like that are out there, what they are "looking" for, and the rituals that Satanists partake in. This book definetely shows that many years of research were put into it to write and that Mr. Kahaner is good at what he does. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject, or just looking for something different to read about.
- After reading this book, I was utterly shocked at how anyone could write this tripe, let alone publish it. I cannot imagine anyone who reads this not feeling greatly insulted and "taken" by the author.
This book makes a huge number of claims, and provides no evidence to support those claims. The book lacks any data that one can use to research the claims--- a deliberate deception. I spent a dollar on this book, and I feel like I have been cheated out of that dollar. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME READING THIS ...! ...
- This is it. This is the book that documents and backs up a lot of the other information I have been sharing up to now... It may be difficult to create the hard evidence that would hold up in a court of law. Ritual and cult abuse are designed that way. The information does come together in a way that cannot be refuted by anyone capable of common sense. These things are happening, they are happening now, and they are getting worse. The only thing this book leaves out are the political connections of those involved. My web site and the links it includes does not. Be cautious. The information in this book is very triggering, and if you have any of it in your background or think you do there will be feelings. If you don't think you do, it will far easier, and safer, (for you anyway) to dismiss the entire thing out of hand. In the short run, that is. In the long run, we all have to pay attention to the phenomenon and the history of ritual and cult abuse...before it's too late for any of us.
- This book was very good. It didn't go over urban legends, but instead described the evolution of Occult Crime teams through their first hand accounts of the crimes that prompted the creation of the teams. Very informative, and also gives interesting details that differentiate between occult oriented lunatics, dangerous Satanic groups, more benign groups (both satanic and pagan), and using the occult as a cover for simple sex or insanity motivated crimes.

2 comments about Never Seen the Moon: THE TRIALS OF EDITH MAXWELL.
- I'm not much of a writer of reviews but do want to heartily recommend this book to all and especially anyone interested in the Appalachian area, history, media, or law.
I did truly find it to be a page-turner.
I'm a native of the area but this case was a little before my time and I had not heard a word about it. I was hooked from the first page.
I do think most people would like this book for one reason or another. I was so surprised to see how Wise County was a bit before its time in some of the legal aspects of the trial.
- The Depression era saw its fair share of sensational murder trials in the United States: Winnie Ruth Judd (the 'Trunk Murderess'), child-killing cannibal Albert Fish, and Bruno Richard Hauptmann (accused of kidnapping and killing the Lindbergh baby), to name a few. They all received extensive press coverage, provoked controversy, and went on to become the subject of more than one best-selling book. Although her two trials in connection with the death of her controlling father were cause celebres for their durations, Edith Maxwell has never received a book-length examination of her case until now. And that's what makes Sharon Hatfield's "Never Seen the Moon" such a fascinating read and important social document.
It's more than just the reporting of a young schoolteacher's now-forgotten battle for her life and then her freedom. Sharon Hatfield exposes 1930s America's prejudice toward Appalachian culture in general and 'hillbillies' in particular, political restrictions that forbade women from sitting on the Maxwell jury and allowing her to truly be judged by a collection of her peers, and the younger generation's fight to challenge violent paternal authority.
"Never Seen the Moon" can be read and interpreted as an exciting piece of True Crime or a sobering social document. Highly recommended.

- ...or that's how the author would have it seem. This book does present the technical facts about the case, but he goes out of his way to paint the town with a negative, "redneck" flavor. Sure, there are "redneck" folks around, but they're in every town.
Honesdale isn't a bad little town. Just a normal, everyday America small town. It's a decent place to live, just not a lot going on. This was one of the biggest stories of the time.

1 comments about Deep Beyond the Reef: A True Story of Madness and Murder in the South Pacific.
- I finished the book yesterday and I am just slowly picking up my life
where I left off before I started reading "Deep Beyond the Reef" ...
The sensation I had when reading this book came close to how books by Garcia Marquez or Guenter Grass make me feel: the tremendous truth of the human spirit, naked, un-adorned and yet so poetic and moving.
I know this sounds rather dramatic but I have to admit "Deep Beyond the Reef" did cast a spell on me, and I am sure every reader before and after me will feel the same.
Already in the first chapter I knew I would be drawn into one of the most
compelling reading experiences of the last ten years (and I mastered in literature!) Well done, this book is as timeless as they come and it is just starting to live!!!
