1 comments about Hanging Valley.
- This book is just not a real western, historically or practically.
The plot is clumsy and slow, the action is more like a badly done B western
movie than an action packed novel.
What first put me off was the fellow turning loose horses.
No one in their right mind turned horses loose.
They were one of the major sources of wealth in the old west.
So a lot of the action is slow and uncharacteristic of actual westerns.
The main romantic interest is just pot bolled on, over and over...
The improbability of the torture of the mine owner lasting more than a month and being done in a plot twist by his own son was pretty much what put it away for me.

- I've known Paulette for a little over a year and worked with her and her husband in helping the McKay Foundation. Paulette is such an incredible person; the way she has overcome so much that would destroy most people. This book intimately takes you into her world where she loved her son as much as any mom could. You get sick reading about a human who could be so depraved to kill the son of people he claimed as friends in order to get money. You feel like you are experiencing the shock, the anger, the irrationality, and the insanity as Paulette paints the ugly picture of the most despicable act I've ever known about. This book evokes many emotions. You feel the happy pull from the silly fun times a mom shared with her son, and the empty hollow quiet when it all came to a shattering end. Paulette fairly and accurately tells the story with chilling detail that very few people know about. She does not set herself up as some kind of hero for getting through it. Rather she describes how her life went on and slowly she learned to find daily purpose. To write this story did take a huge amount of courage. She holds nothing back. It is a fascinating read that's hard to put down, though you will likely go through times of deep sadness and sickening disgust in getting through the pages of a hideous crime by a beast pretending to be human. Paulette now focuses her energy toward making the world safer for children who might be victimized by strangers, friends or family members, bullies, or on-line predators. Bringing awareness to the hidden ugliness and deception that threaten our children is a step in ending it through better education.
