5 comments about Murder in the Name of God: The Plot to Kill Yitzhak Rabin.
  1. This is an important book which is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the background to the current situation in the Middle East. Ostensibly an account of the events leading up to the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin, the book is much more than this. It contains a wealth of background information and scrupulously marshalled detail which shows how the assassination wasnot an act of inhuman recklessness on the partof an isolated fanatic, but part of of a deliberate movement orchestrated by the leaders of the ultra-orthodox right to carryout a death threat 'sanctioned by Jewish law' against someone who was giving away the land of the Jews, in going along with the Oslo accord. It is a devastating account of mistaken bigotry and evil employing non-democratic ends to bring about its aims. the book paints a pictrure of a country on the verge of civil war and, although at times it reas likea thriller, this excellent book is an impartial and well-documented account of the most recent chapter in Israel's history.

  2. I was fascinated by this book. Although I had known the events, I hadn't appreciated how they had emerged from the political discourse of the ultra-orthodox. The book provides plenty of compelling detail. It is well written and it frighteningly suggests that Israel is now threatened by civil strife.

  3. I became interested in the subject of the Rabin assassination after reading a few conspiracy theories on the web. This book, however, provides ample evidence that Yitzhak Rabin's murder wasn't the act of shadowy secret services, but, rather, a lone fanatic acting on what he believed to be the implicit commands of self-righteous religious authorities who should have known better. In a way I was disappointed by the lack of JFK-style mystery in the book, but in the end I found it a truly enlightening work which brings to light the inevitable consequence of mixing politics with religion: violence.

  4. This book is really an exercise steeped in purposeful deception, lies and obfuscations. It is simply a propoganda exercise meant to support the Shamgar Commission Report and to pander to, and allay the fears of, the many liberal, establishment secular Jews who depend on the status quo and who haven't the courage to face up to the truth of Rabin's assassination.

Dr. David Morrison, the author of "Lies - Israel's Secret Service and the Rabin Murder," presents a damning critique of this book and the authors and their deceptions are made clear point by point. If you want to keep your head buried in the sand then read "Murder in the Name of God." If you want a serious critique of all of the available evidence then read Barry Chamish or Dr. Morrison's "LIES."

    Wake up Israel!

  5. This is a gereat book. As a lvoer of Israel I was always appalled by the Yigal Amir's of this world. This book gives great context to the more fanatical nationalist elements in both Israel and regrettable here in the United States. I never thought I owuld ever see the day when bogus Rabbis would issue a "fatwa" on a Prime Mnister's life. yet Jacob Hecht essentially did that. Unfortuantely the debate in Israel (has anyone seen the Knesset in action?) is loud, vituperative, vulgar and shrill. I am also aware of conspiracy theorists ont he web, people who are trying to exonerate the mystagogical settlers from teh murder. This is baloney and worthy of an Oliver Stone. Unfortunately politcal/physical violence against fellow Jews is not unheard of: the Arlosoroff Affair, the Altalena affair; the murder of Emil Grunzweig in an anti-Lebanon war demonstration in 1982 and of course the Rabin murder. The fact that some insane people here and in Israel are calling for a pardon for Amir is very disturbing. If you hate fanaticism as I do, this book becomes despite its superb writing and research - a painful read.

5 comments about Assassination of a Michigan King: The Life of James Jesse Strang.
  1. I'm a relative of his and have recently become interested in learning about him. So please if you know about him tell me.

  2. I have done extensive study on the subject of Jas. Strang and his followers. I found this book and several others extremely fair-minded considering the controversies (as well as present day prejudices) surrounding this utopian experiment. I welcome other comments. My great-great grandfather was present at Strang's coronation on Beaver Island, Michigan.

  3. Mormonism's second prophet wasn't the famous Brigham Young -- he may have seized control of many of the Church's institutions, but he never claimed to be the "Prophet". That mantle was seized by the insteresting historic figure, James J. Strang, who led his portion of the Mormon Church from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Voree, Wisconsin, and then to Beaver Island, Michigan at the same time that Young was leading his branch to Utah.

Van Noord's book is a great biography of Strang which makes close use of Strang's journals, letters, books, and draws a great deal from the newspapers which Strang's church published. Strang's many successes both on Beaver Island and then also in the Michigan legislature, imply that he was quite a brilliant and eloquent character. The book leads you to wonder what might have happened had he not been assassinated.

The only problems with Van Noord's book are that he does not seem to be an expert in the field of Mormon history generally, and he has relied on informants in the modern Utah church -- the great rival of Strang's church -- for some of his information on Mormonism. Additionally, the biography definitely leaves you wanting a larger history of the Strangite church.

All in all, the book is an excellent read. I picked it up and nearly read it cover to cover uninterrupted, as I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Strang next.

  4. This work is a fairly standard, straight-forward biography of King Strang. It is very well researched, documented, and foot noted. It would appear that Mr. Van Noord dug deeper into his reseach than most authors dealing with James Strang have in the past. The book enlightened me on several points regarding King Strang that I had previously read and Mr. Van Noord found to be incorrect. If you are interested in learning about a fascinating man and those around him this is the book. However it gives only a sparce and very typical Beaver Island history and does not touch on the legendary (and I believe, mythical) Mormon, Beaver Island treasure at all. If those items are your points of interest, look elsewhere.

  5. I found this book to be well written and researched. James Jesse Strang is a unique character (A King no less!) in the history of Michigan. This book inspired me to visit Michigan's Beaver Island. As a compliment to this book I would also suggest reading Guardian of the Great Lakes The U.S. Paddle Frigate Michigan By: Mr. Bradley A. Rodgers.

2 comments about The Second Oswald A startling alternative to the single assassin theory of the Warren Commission Report.

  1. As the 22nd of November comes around again,we are still not sure if the whole story of the Assassination of JFK is known.I have been following it since those terrible days when we were glued to our TV's watching this event unfold.
Many of us saw it live, as Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby.At least that is what we thought we saw. We were horrified at the time, and wondered where this was all going to end.At the time,it almost seemed like Oswald's killing was being staged;and doubts remain to this day.Was that really Oswald, was he really shot, why was it allowed to happen, was it done to shut him up,why did Ruby do it,who else was involved with Ruby, did Ruby have connections to Oswald, why was Oswald so quickly and easily found, would Oswald have been convicted of being the lone killer of JFK if he had been put on trial, would Oswald have involved others, and many more questions were asked at the time and to a large degree remain in doubt today ,in the minds of most people.
This book was published in 1966,and I probably read it way back then. At least ,most of the issues raised in it are somewhat familiar to anyone who followed this event and kept looking for resolution of this crime ,which has captivated millions of people.
This book is a good reminder of many details and reads as well today as it did when first published.I know ,in my case, the question of Conspiracy has not been put to bed.The fact that after so much has been written and so little not resolved, after so many years, only enforces the suspicion that a conspiracy did take place.
This book would be well worth a read by anyone born years after the event,to see why there was at the time, and still remains, such doubt about the "official" version of what happened and why.

  2. LHO as far as am concern had nothing to do whatsoever with the Murders of JFK or Police Officer JD Tippit. With tremendous Pressure from the White House for a quick fix Political solution to the Crime, regardless of the Evidence, The Dallas Police fueled by Media Hysteria convicted Oswald in the eyes of the World.in reality every piece of so called Evidence against Oswald could of been challenged in open court.in every concievable way the chain of evidence in this case had been broken. The Warren Commission for example was never able to prove exactly how and when the Dallas Police obtain the Smudge Palm Print that was Allegedly lifted from the Manlicher Carcano, the rifle Oswald alegedly used in the Crime.Oswald was and is Innocent.

5 comments about Kennedy Assassinated! The World Mourns: A Reporter's Story.
  1. Kennedy Assassinated is an awsome book. It is brief yet very interesting. This book allows you to experience Kennedy's death through the eyes of a reporter. I actually began to sweat. If you want to read about president Kennedy, this is a good book to start out with.

  2. This book was very exciting I thought. It tells the story of the day that kennady was assassinated. I really likd this book because it was very exciting aand has a great retelling of the event. It also had great allusion back to the future in a reporters shoes. Thats what I thought of the book.

  3. Kennedy Assassinated was a great book. It taught me alot of what happened to him. I gave this book five stars because I learned who shot Kennedy and where. My favorite part was when they were operating on him in emergency room one. They kept on trying to bring him back but he is gone. I really liked this book.

  4. Kennedy Assassinated was an awesome book. I think that this book is very incredible in detail because it gives you all details about how Kennedy survived his life and how he got through it all. I think that this book is awesome for anybody that can read. If you are interested in history then this is your kind of book. Please take this and remember that he was a good person but he lived a bad past. The best story element for this book would also be suspense. It tells you of what happens and how it all happens. Thank you for listening and I hope that it helped you.

  5. This is one of the better books I have ever read! This book did a great job of suspense, it was unbelievable! JFK is riding in his convertable along side a Dallas police baracade when he and the governer of Texas are shot. The are both taken to the hospital near by and a young reporter is assigned to the case. This is is first case and it had me on the edge of my seat wondering how he would do on the case. I really recomend this book to you if you like drama and suspense, it is truly a really great book.
