  1. Galanor has accomplished a feat that most students of this case have thought was next to impossible: a concise account of the most basic aspects of the assassination of JFK that enables new students to understand most of the crucial issues and old hands to fully appreciate their fundamental importance. In some ways, this stunning feat might have been expected from an author whose earlier work made calculus--perhaps the most difficult of undergraduate courses--accessible to students with no flare for mathematics.

In my own book on this case, MURDER IN DEALEY PLAZA (2000), I provide a set of 16 "smoking guns", beginning with two drawn from Galanor's book; and at the conclusion of my "Prologue", I advise my readers to begin with COVER-UP (1998) before they read mine. So don't be taken in by the book's easy-to-read style or by the abundant photographs, diagrams, and illustrations that make this case accessible to everyone who can read. It takes experts years to master this material. Galanor makes it accessible in hours.

  2. First and foremost, this little book is too brief to convince anybody of anything--I counted only 104 pages of true text. What was most disappointing for me was that the author was extremely selective about the "evidence" he presented that there was a cover-up. For example, even though the autopsists did not use approved methods when they noted that JFK's upper-back wound was "14 cm from the tip of the acromium process and 14 cm below the tip of the right mastoid process," this measurement at least fixed the location much more precisely than the "X" they marked on the autopsy face sheet. But, Galanor, of course, only mentions the "X." Also the autopsists stated the wound was "just above the upper border of the [right] scapula." Here again the author conveniently omitted their attempt to be more precise.Later, the author states that a paraffin test that showed no presence of nitrates on Oswald's right cheek was "consistent with the possibility that Oswald did not fire a rifle." This is true of course, but didn't Galanor think the readers might want to know that an FBI agent, who fired three shots in succession with the same rifle found on the sixth floor of the depository, also tested negative.I could go on but I don't want to beat a dead horse. So, if you're looking for the truth about the assassination of President Kennedy, I suggest you don't look for it here.

  3. very simple review There is nothing new here. This seems like a conglomeration of everything already printed weather factual or speculative. very disapointing

  4. Stewart Galanor's book "Cover-Up" is one of top most powerful and informative reads you will find on the JFK assassination! It is loaded with many revelations not found in other books on the subject, and for those of us who have studied and researched the various books and articles on the subject for years, many examples of extremely close attention to details showing just how much evidence was tampered with or clearly altered in the course of the Warren Commission's investigation.

The pictures and documentation of the phyiscal evidence and the efforts to duplicate what is told to us as truth by the FBI and other investigative groups prove that without a doubt, we haven't been told the entire truth about what happened. Just the study and comparison of the wound analysis and ballistics PROVES that the whole premise that Lee Oswald did it alone is untenable.

Using the Scientific Method, one is able to prove or disprove predictions based on facts learned from trying to create and recreate results, and then using different variables to learn even more information. Galanor's "Document 24" is just one of many proofs that the evidence had to be altered because it could not be duplicated--the Sixth floor window is 60 feet from ground level, while the tower that was used to attempt to duplicate the shots from the "sixth floor elevation" at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Grounds (Warren Commission Exhibit 579) is only 30 feet high. There are many other startly examples in the book.

This is without question one of the best books on the JFK assassination you could read. It helps to bring together a lot of the facts that have been missed by others, and it powerfully illustrates that much of what we have been told as fact is ridiculous. If your views are those that support the findings of the Warren Commission, this book will shatter them. If your views support the idea that Oswald acted alone, the evidence in this book will show you how that position is no longer valid, simply because that which is purported to have been done by "Oswald" could not be duplicated.

Mr. Galanor should be commended for his interest and study of the records on which his work is based--obviously very few have devoted as much time with the keen eye for detail he has shown in finding much within the Warren Commission materials disproving their own positions after all these years. Harold Weisberg and Mark Lane were two of the first, and Galanor adds much to this ever-increasing long list of inaccurate information sold to the American people as fact.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to settle the doubts in their minds about whether or not we have ever been told the whole truth about the investigations into the JFK assassination!

  5. Although one can quibble with a few details, this book is the most up-to-date concise introduction to the issues in the assassination of President Kennedy currently available. Anyone seeking a brief, informative and well-illustrated alternative to the dismal "Oswald did it" propaganda of Gerald Posner should give Galanor a read. There have been some good previous concise summaries of the evidence for conspiracy, but all are somewhat dated at this point. Stewart Galanor has ably filled an obvious gap in the literature.

5 comments about Who Shot JFK?: A Guide to the Major Conspiracy Theories.
  1. some drawings may seem cartoonish, but the actual literature of this book is good.
it covers over 20 of the major assassinations theories, not in great detail, but just an overview, like Cliff's Noes.
good book that covers the Warren Commission, Ford, the FBi and CIA, Cuba, Oswald and his life, just an overall good book.
if you want all the details and names, then get the actual JFK book like Crossfire by Jim Marrs.
if you a summary of the theories like Cliff's Notes, then get this book.

  2. For my money, the better history books are those that keep things simple and provide the reader with ample illustration. Callahan and Zingarelli's "WHO SHOT JFK?: A Guide to the Major Conspiracy Theories" is one of those exemplary books.

Author Callahan tackles the stronger elements behind the assassination conspiracies, and presents them concisely, but in a way that leaves the reader satisfied that he/she understands them. (The section dealing with the complex, multi-personalities that Lee Harvey Oswald's legacy has left us is, to me, the strongest chapter.) Mark Zingarelli's illustrations--they are not cartoons--are witty sometimes, but at others, very, very eerie. Haunting might be the better term. Try to get your hands on this book--Amazon can find it for you.

  3. I mildy recommend this 30th anniversary volume as a sort of "starter" book for nubies. That said, "High Treason" (especially the 1998 edition) is far superior.
    [...]

  4. President Kennedy was murdered in 1963. A man named Lee Harvey Oswald pulled the trigger of the rifle that was used to kill the President. There is no physical evidence in the record that supports the idea that any other assassins were shooting at President Kennedy that late November day in Dallas' Dealey Plaza. None at all. No bullets. No guns. Nothing.

Despite the fact that there is no physical evidence whatsoever to back up the notion that a multi-shooter conspiracy was afoot on 11/22/63, tons of conspiracy promoters have filled the landscape with so many different conspiracy theories, it's enough to make your head spin around. And not a one of them holds any water.

But, when the Conspiracy Cupboard is this well-stocked with tripe, it's no wonder that "CTers" love to wallow in the sheer abundance of all this completely-unproven and unsupportable garbage. (After all, by accepting as factual the physical evidence of Lee Oswald's lone guilt, it would surely put a lot of people out of work.)

How many of the above theories do you think are true?*

    * = Anyone who answers "all of the above" should contact Oliver Stone immediately in order to help write the script for Stone's sequel to his 1991 motion picture. It'll be a 7-hour spectacle entitled "Kennedy's Killing: 20 Shooters Plus The Kitchen Sink". (Rated "G" For "Goofy" .... MPAA Warning: Film may contain scenes actually depicting a modicum of "truth"; viewers who encounter such rare items within said Oliver Stone motion picture are encouraged to contact Ripley's Museum asap.) ~wink~

  5. I'm somewhat of an aficionado of the Kennedy assassination. But you don't have to be one to get a real kick -- and an education -- out of this book.

The authors have pulled off a seemingly impossible task. On the one hand, they have put together a pretty accurate thumbnail sketch of the assassination, its aftermath, the Warren Commission, the claims of cover-up, the Garrison trial, and so on. By the end of reading each chapter, you've got a fairly clear idea of the major thrust of each development and the major flaws in every assassination theory or investigation. It's a great overview, even for people who are well informed.

Yet it's also funny as hell. Alongside the descriptions and critiques of the Warren Commission and other investigators, the authors include the bizarre theories of the John Birch Society and various novelists and lunatics, all of whom have a particular take on who dunnit.

Straddling the two worlds of legitimate investigator and wacko conspiracy nut is New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, whose outrageous misuse of the legal system was whitewashed and used as the basis of Oliver Stone's movie, "JFK". The authors spare no punches in in describing Garrison's bizarre/stupid assassination theory, and the rogues' gallery of misfits and unbalanced sickos that Garrison relied on to persecute homosexual businessman Clay Shaw for the alleged participation in JFK's death. Before I read this book, I didn't know that when the police raided Shaw's house, they confiscated seventeen whips, all of which were introduced into evidence to prove that Shaw tried to kill the president. If you're the sort of person who asks what Clay Shaw's sexual fetishes had to do with JFK's assassination, then Garrison would probably have tried to exclude you from the jury.

Alongside the authors' wonderful descriptions of Garrison's self-serving shenanigans is their chapter on the many faces of Lee Harvey Oswald. Who was Oswald? they ask, and proceed to describe the many facets of Oswald's life almost as if they were descriptions of different personalities, which in a sense they are. Funny as the chapter is, it is also an accurate description of a rootless young man who ping-ponged and drifted from the Mafia to the Marines, then to Minsk, Mexico and (sorry, but I've run out of "M" words) FBI splinter organizations, pro-Castroite and anti-Castroite groups, ending in . . . what? Assassin? Patsy? We may never know.

A review of this book has to include a mention of the bizarre, yet appropriate, illustrations. My personal favorite is the picture that accompanies the Clay Shaw trial chapter. It shows Lee Harvey Oswald dressed in a jock strap and a cowboy hat, riding a man bareback and using one of Clay Shaw's whips, while Shaw himself leers at the viewer from the foreground. Other drawings are far less graphic, but you get the idea.

Do I recommend this book? You Bet! It's the perfect gift for the conspiracy nut in your family. My mom liked it, too!

4 comments about Never Too Late : A Prosecutor's Story of Justice in the Medgar Evars Case.
  1. Medgar Evers was an American Hero. A young, articulate African American man, he had the courage to be head of the NAACP in Mississippi during the darkest days of the Civil Rights Movement. He was shot in the back in his driveway by an avowed "rabid racist" named Byron de la Beckwith.

Beckwith was tried twice for the crime; each time the jury was hung.

A quarter of a century later, an intrepid reporter named Jerry Mitchell of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger shook Mississippi to the core when he uncovered new evidence that pointed to Beckwith's guilt. Myrlie Evers, an amazing woman who was widowed by Beckwith's bullet, took that evidence to the Hinds County District Attorney's Office and asked that the case be reopened.

At first, the DA was sympathetic but skeptical. Then a brilliant Assistant District Attorney, Bobby DeLaughter, began investigating the possibility of indicting Beckwith.

This is the true story of DeLaughter's dogged, relentless search for justice. The story was partly told in the film "Ghosts of Mississippi" in which DeLaughter was played by Alec Baldwin. However, DeLaughter's real life account of the trial is far more captivating, amazing and, ultimately satisfying than the movie's version.

This book has the passion and riveting surprises of the best of Grisham or Turow, combined with the emotional impact of "Eyes On The Prize" and "The Long Walk Home." DeLaughter, a fluid and powerful writer, takes us deep into the heart of evil as he investigates a powerful Klansman.

In the end, this book is a triumphant and uplifting reminder of how the legal system can still bring justice.

    Highest Recommendation.

  2. I had been interested by the story of Medgar Evers and the difficulty the state had in prosecuting his alleged killer for some time. When the State of Mississippi reopened the case for a potential third attempt at prosecution I was hopeful that some sense of justice might be achieved but not at all convinced that the then alleged killer would be found guilty of Medgar Evers' murder. Bobby De Laughter has written an insightful, thoughtful and intriguing book. As I read his account of the various threads of the story, the leads the DA's office had to develop to prosecute this case after so many years and the elements of good fortune that allowed this case to be pursued successfully I could not help but feel the presence of Medgar Evers. The goodness of the man and his persistent quest for justice is echoed in the actions of Mr. De Laughter, Ms. Myrlie Evers, the many dogged investigators and committed professionals who played their part in making the third trial come together.

This is a great read, so compelling I could not put it down. In many ways this book reads like a mystery. So much of what was needed to prepare the case against Byron De La Beckwith was lost during the long period between the killing and the final trial. Twice shut out, the stakes couldn't have been higher for the prosecution in this third outing. The book is no less suspenseful because the verdict is known. Although an intensely personal account, Mr. DeLaughter clearly and consicely explains the legal hurdles the prosecution faced and incisively analyzes the behavior and motivations of the defendant. Mr. De Laughter is widely descibed as very private, but in his writing he and his experience are so accessible the reader feels as if s/he is there every step of the way. This is an intelligent and inspiring work that should not be missed.

  3. Bobby Delaughter was a prosecutor of the right timbre, morals, and courage at the right time to help bring justice in a 30-year old murder case. This riveting book tells how, in the face of extreme odds, his faith was brought to the forefront, to show that God really does care and uses people such as Delaughter to produce what He desires most - justice. In this book, we see not only a story of Mississippi's catharsis in turning from a place of race-baiting politicians and of organized Ku Klux Klanism to a place where justice can truly be done, but also a story of the touching emotional struggle of the victims and prosecutors alike. As prosecutors face great opposition from not only racists and self-seeking politicians, but also from well-meaning but skeptical black and white citizens and even an arrogant FBI, they rise above the ordinary at great personal and political cost. As an attorney, I coined the phrase, "sometimes truth is very hard to come by." This story embodies that principle. The efforts of Mr. Delaughter and his D.A. boss should be applauded and lauded as a great triumph, not just for the machinery and tools of this great country's ever-grinding legal system, for they are but lifeless concepts apart from the souls that man their stations, but also for those with virtue and conscience, who are the fuel and oil without which there would be no production of justice.

  4. As a new lawyer, this book really helped me realize so many things as to what a lawyer should do before, during, and after the trial.

I am a Filipino, there is no racial discrimination in our country... yet I cried many times while reading this book.

If you read this book you will really learn to appreciate the value of human dignity.

  1. This book, quite simply, provides the most comprehensive coverage of Huey Long's death available anywhere. Updated with new evidence from the 1992 Starrs investigation. The book thoughtfully presents a chronology of events from both sides, Dr. Weiss and Huey Long. The reader is presented with all of the facts and encouraged to draw his own conclusion. The beginning of the book offers a brief overview of Huey Long's life.

5 comments about Killing Time.
  1. If you like a flimsy, dim-witted plot and an imbecelic narrator, this one's for you.

  2. I like the whole disinformation angle. The islamist assasination in the US becomes a pretext to send troops to Afghanistan and then the attack on the afghani terrorist leader had a truly bizare foreshadowing of the caves where "the director" and his minions actually really did fight US troops. This book is mostly whimsy and grim near future. Some plodding dialogue.

This was written post Clinton admin missle strike attacks on Afghani targets, and the threat was identified. Still, the thing about Afghanistan is eery. Caleb Carr later day Nostradamus? : ) I would rather another Alienist type historical fiction novel.

  3. I feel very fortunate to have borrowed this book from the library vice buying a copy. Reading this book wasted my time. The central idea, that an information society has special vulnerability to propaganda and manipulation by elites, strikes me as counter-factual and condescending. As sermon, this book failed to convince me.

As an adventure story, it failed to convince me. The idea of a secret elite with a high-technology airship manipulating the fate of the world's population lacks originality. (See Verne's Robur the Conqueror at Project Gutenberg.)

The book's ending relies on deus ex machina, and one that lies off-stage. It failed to convince me. In fact, the author relies on the very same mechanism for the ending that he condemns throughout the rest of the book: manipulation by an elite.

I can say only one positive thing about this book. I now know to avoid this author's work.

  4. I had read "The Alienist" and thought it was O.K. enough to try another of Carr's books.

I will say that I finished "Killing Time" merely because I felt it MUST get better at some point. It never did.

Instead of inflicting it upon others I gave it to my 2 rabbits who use it as a chew toy.

They are enjoying it more than I did.

  5. This is a book with many good points, but they become so mired in confusion, and at times tedium, that they are largely lost. There is a kernel of an excellent book here as Carr has a point he wants to make, but it becomes lost in several threads of plot. With a better bit of editing this might have been an excellent book, but as it is it is probably better left on the shelf for one of Carr's earlier works.

5 comments about In God's Name.
  1. This book gives a terrible tarnished picture of the Vatican, even if the author is wrong and there was no murder or active murder (they could have let Pope John Paul I die, by not administering him his medicine).
A Vatican controlled by a bunch of corrupt, merciless, avid for power, 'holy' cardinals (Villot, Cody, Marcinkus, Baggio), implicated in a web of depraved banking, masonic and Mafia figures like Calvi, Gelli and Sindona. (I recommend for the 'banking' part also the book by Richard Hammer 'The Vatican Connection').
What is also intriguing, or should I say 'demonic', is the fact that the next pope didn't remove anybody entangled in these murky affairs from his office.
The author gives also very plausible hints why, besides personal career interests, there were moral (the issue of birth control, for instance) and financial (money laundering to help friendly unions or parties) motives.
A devastating book. Not to be missed.

  2. I read this book shortly after it was published and given recent events, I'll be reading it again. It beautifully illustrates the paradox of political institution of religion versus the spiritual faith while investigating possible murder (Pope John Paul 1) and corruption (money laundering, etc) in the Vatican.

Other contradictory activities are uncovered; e.g. contraceptive factories/companies whose existence/ownership is traced back to the Vatican which preaches against contraception. Some critics say the book names no sources and has no footnotes; why should he? The facts are so clearly described that you are able to confirm certain things if you needed to (what with other evidence cited like documents, etc) without necessarily interviewing his sources who obviously helped on condition of anonymity for their own protection.

As much of a furor as this book caused, it's interesting to note that almost 20 years later, not a single allegation contained from within the book has been proven to be false. Rather, much of it has been officially established as true. (see author's site yallop.co.uk). I'd recommend to anyone, especially Catholics.

  3. Whether or not you buy the premise of this book--that a conspiracy among Vatican hard-liners, the Mafia, Freemasons, and others killed Pope John Paul I--IN GOD'S NAME by David Yallop presents a world of Church intrigue that is little discussed. The internecine wars among the Cardinals, the influence of huge amounts of dirty money, and the need for control of the Vatican are fascinating, if disturbing. It is a grim portrait to say the least. IN GOD'S NAME is an important book that deserves a new edition. Until then, pick up a used copy available here.

  4. Wow! What a read. This non-fiction reads almost like a novel, but with LOTS of information. My head was dizzy trying to keep up with all the names of who did what and when. How did the author manage to keep it coherent? Anyway, I got the jist of it and was completely intriqued through all of it. It became obvious throught Yallop's investigation that Pope John Paul I was murdered. And, admittedly, he doesn't name his sources for their protection, but there's enough information to convince even the hard-to-convince. He mentions Freemasons and P2 (Propoganda 2), some clerics, and Mafioso persons who could stand to lose a lot of money by having this Pope in office. For a moment I thought I was reading the Godfather. As Yallop pointed out, was reality imitating art (or the other way around)?

The web of deceit and manipulations that are weaved in this story is harrowing and endless. This is a must read for anyone interested in how our economy, politics, wars, and religions are affected by the Vatican (and have been for centuries), run by deceitful, self-serving or indifferent people choosing to play this dangerous game.

Although this book is 20 yrs old, it's a great insight to the dangerous games played by those in power - at the final cost to the layman, citizen, and hard-working persons of the world.

  5. Albino Luciani was elected Pope and chose to be Pope John Paul the First. Not only becoming the first double name in the history, but also appended the first to it. He was known as the "Smiling Pope" and though his reign was the second shortest in history, only 33 days, he was loved the world over. This wonderful Pastor would have taken the Church back to its Gospel roots where it belongs. He was truly a Man of God. And you could see from his 33 days as Pope that he would have been the greatest Pope ever in the eyes the world.

This book builds a very good case showing that Pope John Paul I was murdered, as many has always thought. It also exposes the corruption both within the Vatican and in the Diocese of Chicago during the years covered. All his research show ties between the Vatican, the Mafia and the Freemasons tied to financial corruption. Documented proof is uncovered and other governments have tired to act on them, but they are blocked by the Curia according to the book.

The author names those involved in the illegal and immoral acts and their motives and opportunity to have Pope John Paul I killed. The author leads the reader to see that it is no coincidence that the Pope was killed the evening before he was going to clean house. Though I was surprised by how obvious the cover-up and lies were according to what we read here. I highly recommend this book.

1 comments about Operation Valkyrie: The German Generals' Plot Against Hitler.
  1. This fine little book goes well beyond it's putative story, the plots to assassinate Hitler. It delves into several war campaign details, reporting a surprising amount of information about the Germans' war against Russia. It contains many eyewitness recounts of conversations with Hitler, explaining his thinking as the war in the East progressed -- and then failed to progress. All of this background, which portended the ultimate destruction of Germany, gave rise to the various schemes to kill Hitler. The only real shame in the entire scenario is that none of the conspirators was willing to simply walk up to the dictator and ignite a bomb. Most lost their lives anyway, after several failed attempts to rid the world of a monster.

5 comments about Deadly Secrets: The Cia-Mafia War Against Castro and the Assassination of J.F.K..
  1. Really interesting stuff here. Digs deep behind the scenes of the whole affair & leaves one wondering what really happened. Very detailed & well-researched.

  2. Although the original message was the CIA-Mafia complicity in President Kennedy's death, there is a more important message for 2005. Namely, Bush, far from being against terrorism, loves terrorists if they're anti-Castro Cubans. Our current president's father is the real villain, but our current Bush has done nothing to put the Miami Mafia terrorists in their place and bring them to justice. (...)

  3. In addition to what was written above, I'd like to add that this book would almost be funny if it weren't so depressing. When I say funny I mean this only for those who might find James Ellroy or Chandler's bleak wit funny. A bitter sarcasm tinges the language that fleshes out this strange corner of WW3. Unlike many history/expose books, Deadly Secrets is written with attitude, with a sharp perspective that is illuminating (Hinckle and Turner have clearly spent some time with many of the players).

The oblique cold warriors (mafia, arms dealers, mercenaries, displaced patriots, displaced murderers, gamblers, right wingnuts, oil barons, cia officers, bad bankers, international corporations, drug traffickers and all those other types of people we don't like to think of as soldiers on the front lines of the cold war) aren't so oblique after reading this...Its a wonder we won the cold war because with friends like these who needs Soviets. Your taxpayer dollars have gone to interesting 'causes,' (schemes) and its not hard to imagine that these secret wars are no different today.

If you are interested in the Cold War and how it bleeds into to "War on Terror" you should check this out. Also helpful for those interested in the continuity of the careers of those who pass through, in, and around 'Dallas,' Watergate, and the Iran/Contra affair.

If you're hungry for more afterwards, other authors to look for are Jonathan Kwitny, Peter Dale Scott, Jonathan Marshall,Alan Block, Pete Brewton, whose bibliographies give up a bunch of great sources.

  4. While this book doesn't identify the actual shooters in the assassination of John Kennedy,it offers up an immense volume of information about the C.I.A.-mafia partnership regarding assassination attempts directed at Fidel Castro.

The planning, execution, and failure of the Bay of Pigs operation are detailed.

The book really focuses on the C.I.A.'s activities and participants, especially in the Caribbean. Air America and the Corsican mafia are also discussed. Various agency business connections and financial ties are detailed.

You will read about characters such as Robert Maheu,Howard Hughes,E.Howard Hunt,Mitchell WerBell III,Frank Sturgis,"Maurice Bishop", and a myriad of other interesting people that were in some instances heavily involved in the intelligence community. In addition to that aspect, the authors investigate the mafia activities in Cuba and Haiti and how they particpated in projects with the Agency, sometimes without Kennedys knowing about it.

The authors documented this book well.
On the subject of the JFK assassination, this is one of the better books available. The details in the book make it an even better book on the subject of secret wars and how participants re-surfaced in the Watergate scandal and even later in politics.

  5. Authors Warren Hinckle and William Turner are "in the know". Learn what they know and you will be a wiser person. In "Deadly Secrets", these thorough investigators reach out to the American people in an attempt to educate them about how the American government really works. They did a superb job, from detailing George H.W. Bush's involvement in the JFK assassinaiton, Iran-Contra, and CIA drug smuggling to Nixon's hiring of the same CIA thugs for his personal and sinister use. Who would have known? This is a great chronicle of the events leading up to and surrounding all these secret events. The most interesting part is the chapter on Bush. I did not realize he had so many connections to the murder of a president. But now, writing in the year 2008, it looks like such pathological killing runs in the family. America is lost forever.
