  1. Half of the pages are impossible to read! The book is divided into bright Christmas red, bright Christmas green, bright yellow, and white pages, all with black print -- and black print on red and green paper is not fun to read! What on earth were they thinking of??????????????

Were it not for that, the book would be excellent. The recipes were family favorites bearing the contributors' names, and most have brief descriptions of why they're such favorites.

  1. I'm surprised no one has rated this cookbook. It's a definite keeper for any cookbook collection. Among my mainstay recipes are the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies w/a bit of coconut, the Pasta and Vegetables, and at the very top of my list: the Chinese Chicken Salad and Cranberry Apple Crisp.

What makes this cookbook a standout is that the recipes are all manageable to prepare but like all Junior League offerings, were created and tested by women who are busy but who are also food-savvy and like to entertain with the flair for which the coastal community of Santa Barbara is known. Thus, the recipes in this book are within the ability of the intermediate cook and yet will also impress your guests.

For perspective, I also depend upon the JL Cookbooks from Savannah, Pensacola, and the JL "Celebration" cookbook for everyday and entertaining, but I reach for the JLSB cookbook when I want a memorable recipe for a casually elegant occasion.

  1. This is a pretty complete recipe book for the outdoor cook of moderate experience. It is very helpful with dutch oven recipes, but you do have to know how to use the dutch oven first, its not really a beginner's guide. However, the recipes are easy to use in the home kitchen, and I'd recommend having this book for a pretty wide range of fun and useful recipes.

  1. This book is great, has many easy recipies with ingredients you have at your home. A+++

  2. This is one of the best cookbooks around! The recipes are simple and very delicious. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your cupboard. The best thing about this cookbook is that it has a large variety of recipes to choose from. This book also includes unique, yet profound sayings which are filled with wisdom and laughter. Out of all the cookbooks I own, I love this one the best! It's the one I grab when I don't feel like going grocery shopping for a hundred small items that I will never use again. If you have to choose just one cookbook for your life...choose this one!

  3. Many various recipes for those that love the down to earth amish cooking. Not the best I own but I do collect them.

  1. This colorful cookbook has photos of the finished dish next to every recipe! The introduction explains where a lot of the recipes are from and also discusses the ingredients. There are many creative tasty recipes in this cookbook for everyone in your family to enjoy. It has unusual recipes such as "Wild Rice Pancakes," "Sausage Waffles," "Venison Cabbage Rolls," "Spicy Venison Chilli," "Bell Pepper Antipasto," "Curried Cranberry Chicken" and more! If you like being creative in the kitchen and trying tasty new dishes this is a great cookbook to add to your collection!

  2. In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of (American) Heartland Cooking, presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from appetizers to reads and desserts. Special chapters are dedicated to soups, poultry, (red) meat, fish, eggs, cheese, sandwiches, salads and vegetables. Classics such as baked chicken wings and baked potatoes, cranberry banana bread, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, dill sauce, farmer's omelet, BBQ beef, turkey and ham sandwiches, meatloaf, spareribs, pies, sloppy joes and popcorn party snack mix appear next to unique dishes such as pheasant baked in cream, spicy venison chili, cardamom sugar cookies, glazed orange bread, pork and raspberry sauce, turkey in pastry and sausage waffles. The book's last page contains metric charts for those unaccustomed to American measurements.

From bell pepper antipasto and frosted apple cake to Wisconsin beer cheese soup and spicy zucchini bread, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the richness of the cuisine of what is probably the most American of all American regions - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.

  3. I have had this book for 10 years. I have used 6 or 7 of the dishes over and over again to the raves of my family and friends. The value of any cookbook is if you use even one of the dishes so often it becomes a part of your life. This book has paid it's way over and over again. Try the Swedish meatballs or the Tosca cake. Tired of regular eggs? Try the baked eggs - easy and tasty!

  4. This is a relatively small collection of recipes, and all that I have tried so far are winners. I really like the everything on one page presentation and the pictures showing what to expect.

  1. As the owner of a couple hundred cookbooks, I think it means something for me to say that I've used this cookbook many times. I've used quite a few of the recipes more than once.

    The sections are:
Appetizers (Parmesan-Spinach Balls with Honey-Mustard-Chili Sauce are simple to make, and everyone wants the recipe)
Soups and Stews (Potato, Cheese & Chili Bisque)
Salads (Bavarian Red Potato and Apple Salad)
Grains, Legumes, Pastas & Vegetables (Asparagus with Toasted Hazelnuts and Garlic - I subbed almonds with scrumptions results...this sauce is killer and SO easy)
Lamb, Pork, Wild Game and Beef (Cabernet-Cherry Grilled Elk Flank with Red Onion Marmalade - I didn't make the marmalade, but the marinade was perfect)
Poultry and Wild Fowl (Chipotle- and Thyme-Roasted Turkey Breast with Chipotle Aioli)
Fish and Seafood (I haven't made any yet but check out the Green Chili and Corn-Stuffed Trout with Lime or the Oysters and Walnuts En Croute with Sherry Sauce)
Desserts (Taos Cinnamon-Chocolate Torte was a bit too dry for me, but I'll use the glaze recipe on other things. The Flathead Cherry Fudge Torte never has a crumb left)
    Breads (Sweet Potato Biscuits)
Brunch (Polenta Triangles with Poached Eggs, Peppers and Hollandaise)

A very few ingredients (mainly meat) might be harder to obtain for non-Rockies residents. There's a list of suppliers at the end, as well as a good index.

All of the instructions are easy to follow. Lots of the recipes make me think of warm, cozy food. They are flavorful without being overly spicy. Each one has an interesting twist. I only listed a few of the recipes that I've actually tried, but she covers a wide spectrum within each category.

I'm going to buy a copy for my father, also a cook. He enjoyed reading the author's comments about each recipe. He wanted so many of the recipes that I'm not giving up my copy!

  2. We visited the Rockies, so I was intrigued with this cookbook. I was quite surprised to see how versatile it is...not a collection of things no one would ever make, really quite a wonderful collection of recipes.

  1. What a fantastic cookbook!!!! I have recently made many of these recipes for a teachers luncheon I had to prepare.....everything from horsdevours to desserts...and I recieved rave reviews! It was all fantastic and easy to prepare...as a matter of fact..many of the teachers wanted to purchase the book!!!! Congratulations for yet another wonderful Junior League cookbook!

  2. This is a wonderful cookbook as well as a very interesting book of history back to the early 1800's and the Pony Express era. Recipes are awesome, some very easy to cook and some very challenging, but all ohh so good. My husband has even enjoyed experimenting with the recipes.
The most interesting part of this book is the side bars with great trivia, past and present regarding the Northwest Missouri area and its contribution to America's history. With items about the Pony Express, Jesse James, Eugene Field the poet, etc.
The French Toile (yellow and black) cover is very eye pleasing and looks great on the counter at home.
Can't say enough about this book - great to cook from and read.

  3. The Roux We Do is an elegant compilation of superbly presented recipes that would be highly recommended for any family meal or celebratory dinner. From Black Bean Bundles; Tuscan White Onion Soup with Crostini; Applewoood Fresh Fruit Salad; Honey Hoisin Pork Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Cream Sauce; and Pistachio Crusted Salmon with Madras Curry and Orange Sauces; to Chicken Caprese with Tomato Basil Cream; Pasta with Chicken and Pepper-Cheese Sauce; Roasted Garlic Potato Salad; Acorn Squash in Honey Bourbon Sauce; and Chocolate Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, the diverse recipes comprising The Roux We Do are as impressive as they are mouth-wateringly delicious!

  4. This coookbook has many great recipes, but I really enjoy reading the historical anecdotes that accompany each section. What a fun way to learn about our heritage!

  5. This book is not only full of wonderful recipes but is also loaded with history! I have learned more about the Pony Express, Jesse James and the birth of the Midwest from the pages of this cookbook than I learned in school. As a new "transplant" to the Midwest from the Pacific Northwest this book has been a lifesaver.
