  1. This recipe book is published by The Stinking Rose Restaurant, a famous garlic restaurant in San Francisco. Before Revealing the secrets of 36 of their garlic dishes, The book starts by explaining to you in layman's terms, information on how to purchase, store and prepare garlic. The author has a great sense of humor, while still managing to remain informative and on topic. The interior of the book has many illustrations that are often drop dead hysterical, which makes this a really fun book that everyone can enjoy.

The cooking instructions are fairly easy and simple; the dishes prepared at home often do not taste the same as the dishes you'd find at the restaurant. I usually end up eating at the restaurant instead, and this book becomes a valuable companion to me when I eat there. Generally speaking, this book is really worth your money; you just can't go wrong. Well, at the very least, You'd get a good laugh out of it, and have yourself a pretty good talk piece!

  2. If you're not lucky enough to live close to the City (that's San Francisco for those who may not know), then this cookbook is a must. We are fortunate in that we can get there anytime we want; but for those times in between, we love having this on hand. Cook up one of these recipes and it's almost as good as being at The Stinking Rose (not exactly because you don't have someone else doing the cooking for you). If you're a garlic lover, this is a MUST!

  1. I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!)

  2. I, too, checked this out of the library and tried the gingerbread recipe. Made it for the second time today for a family dinner and everyone raved about it. It is a lovely book full of comments about each recipe and wonderful illustrations. My 9 year old loved looking at it too. Can't wait to try more recipes...a good variety with old-fashioned sensibility.

  3. You really have to see this book to know how beautiful it is. Not only is it a fabulous cookbook, but it's also a biography of stories from the Wilder household. The pictures are beautifully done mostly in color. There are some different photos of Laura and her family though out the book.

  1. I watch Chef Al on television every week and the recipes he picks are not only delicious and different, but really not very difficult for the average cook. There are not too many esoteric ingredients and he gives a fine selection of fixings for Alaska's wild salmon and halibut.

  1. This beautifully written book is a real find and I hope someone restores it to print. Kluger weaves together recollections of her childhood on an Indiana farm in the 1930s with the recipes for the dishes she grew up eating. Every page is filled with affection that feels genuine, never cloying. The recipes are outstanding and will remind many people of food they, or their parents, ate. (Chess pie, buttermilk biscuits, real preserves, etc.) This book is also a good reminder of a time when people not only made do with what they could grow or build themselves, they also turned what people today might think of as hardships into occasions for joy.

  2. I grew up in the Midwest. Was hoping to find some of those old recipes in this cookbook. The title is misleading. Very few recipes are included. Most of the book-about 80% - consists of stories of her family. I usually enjoy a few stories in a cookbook but when a book is titled a cookbook it should have mostly recipes. Also there is nothing exciting about the recipes that were included. You can find these recipes in most any collection. Quite disappointing.

  1. Paola Gavin has done down-to-earth cooks a huge favor by proving that the words "French" and "vegetarian" can co-exist in peace and simplicity. Refreshingly short ingredient lists grace the pages, presented in an austere format which belies the tempting and tasty dishes that will result.

  2. French Vegetarian Cooking has become my favorite cookbook. It almost converted me to being a vegetarian. The recipes are simple, with sublime combinations of readily available ingredients. The recipes are wonderful for whipping up a quick afterwork meal or vegetable dish that tastes like good French restaraunt food. If you're tired of eating the same old-same old, buy this book. You'll be thrilled with the results of throwing together a few classic ingredients that produce a fabulous tasting and refreshing change from your regular fare.

It will impress your family too. If you're going to feed them green beans you might as well pour on a little combination of lemon, garlic, olive oil and basil to make a superb side dish. (Great for taking to parties too). As long as you're making baked potatoes, it takes no time to throw together a cream, mushroom and herb concoction to stuff them with. So much better than boring old spuds. And even the kids will be tempted by the lovely creamy, cheesy mornay sauce you can pour over the brussel sprouts. Really! My 8 year old loves that dish.

So if you want to impress friends and family using simple, fast recipes that produce surprisingly scrumptious results, get this cookbook. You will find yourself using it often and loving it.

  3. As a vegetarian for almost 30 years, this was the cookbook I had always been waiting for. For inexplicable reasons, France appears to be anti-vegetarian. Though the food seems so easily adaptable to vegetarians, instead of leaving the meat out of the amazing and wonderful dishes, usually the top French restaurants in the US and restaurants in France would serve a vegetarian nothing but a plate of grilled vegetables, albiet exquisitely arranged. (Though I noticed that as side dishes or additional courses, meat eaters would often get some delectable vegetarian dishes.) Finally, there is a great cookbook that tells you how to make these dishes and how to make them vegetarian. What's even more amazing is how easy these recipes are. So many books will include in their titles words such as "quick", "in less than 30 minutes", "five ingredients only" but the recipes are really not that simple, easy or quick. But this book actually is simple and easy, though it doesn't bill itself as such. (Soups are so delicious and easy that it can be part of everyday meals with very little fuss or preparation.) I've made most of the recipes and everyone was absolutely delicious. The ingredients are simple and easily substitutable. Most importantly, as you use the book a little, you develop an understanding for how the different types of dishes are made and become independent of the book - so you can create your own quiches, crepes, flans, tians, and gratins. The French really are amazing cooks and they do it with simple but good ingredients and this book makes that possible for vegetarians. The recipes are great for non-vegetarians as well. My carnivirous father-in-law was unbelievably impressed.
