  1. I have made several recipes from this cookbook. They vary from easy to complex, but each recipe I have made has tasted wonderful. I have loved them - and so have the people I have made the recipes for. I highly recommend this cookbook.

  1. This is a wonderful book-rich with history and classic recipes! I grew up eating at Joe's on our annual trips to the Miami area. The food and atmosphere were always memorable. I have especially enjoyed creating the salads, sides, and luscious desserts that enhanced the stone crab experience in my own kitchen. This book is a must have for both the recipes and the tales that have built the persona of Joe's Stone Crab.

  1. Chef Bannos has some of the best Cajun/ Creole cooking in the country and most of his greatest hits are featured in this book. Unlike "traditional" Cajun cookbooks, Bannos does not restrict himself to Louisiana. Jamaican, Italian and Greek influences are fused effortlessly with Cajun Creole foundations. A perfect example of this, and my favorite recipe in the book is Bannos' jerktoufee, a wild and wonderful blending of Jamaican jerk and Cajun etoufee.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

  2. Years ago the Chicago Trib did an article on this place and I clipped it and hung it on my frig. I made several of the dishes and was intriged enough to visit NOLA.

After visiting NOLA I had to visit this place. Wonderful.

The book is GREAT. And the recipes are very easy to follow. Also you don't have to have HARD TO FIND spices..

  1. I currently have this book out from the library and it is about 2 months over due as I cannot bear to part with it ( I promise to give it back when mine comes in from Amazon!) Every recipe I have tried in this book from Soft Oatmeal Sandwich Bread to Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies is wonderful! They tastes delicious and yet the recipes use natural ingredients.

  2. You can actually *read* this cookbook from cover to cover, enjoying every page not just for the recipes but for the running commentary and tips provided by Haedrich. He is a wonderfully skilled writer and cook, and these recipes are healthy, wholesome, and absolutely delicious. Don't miss the 60-minute bread recipe. Yummm!

  3. This is the best cookbook I've bought in years! This book is a great way to introduce your family to whole grains if they aren't used to them; and it is an awesome book for families who already cook with whole grains. The recipes are delectible [which isn't always true of the whole grain recipes I've tried from other sources]. This cookbook uses whole grains without being pretentious too [if you know what I mean... ].

Ken Haedrich is very entertaining throughout the book - its actually a fun read [how often can you say THAT about a cookbook?]. He educates without preaching and conveys the wonder and peace of baking your own goods - it really is wonderful.

I found this book thoroughly enjoyable and my family has LOVED all the recipes I've made from it. [And I have one family member who is a real "white bread, meat and potatoes" kind of guy - so this is saying something!!].

  4. The title of this book is very misleading. The recipes do incorporate some whole grains in each recipe, but use predominantly unbleached white flour.

There are a few recipes that are entirely whole-grain, but if that is your focus, you would do better to keep looking.

I'm sure there are some fine recipes in this book (I own several of Ken Haedrich's books), just not what I was expecting.

  5. This is a really good book for those that are learning to bake breads from scratch. I wish I had found this one when I first started baking, as all of the instructional sections would have been SO helpful! I actually bought this after seeing it at the library. I enjoyed it so much, I wanted my own copy.

4 comments about Sugar Pie and Jelly Roll: Sweets From A Southern Kitchen.
  1. The desserts in this charming book are simple to make, gorgeous to look at, and scrumptious to eat. Ms. Gourley's childhood years on a North Carolina farm are remembered with an embracing warmth, and lovingly filled out with old recipes from family and friends. If that isn't enough, her art is as mouth-watering as her desserts, especially the divider sections of the book. Each section opens with a double-page spread watercolor of fruit ripening on trees, and the deftness of her brushwork is almost oriental, but with an added American exhuberance. I guess you can tell I loved this book. I bought one copy for myself, several more to give as gifts, and I'm certain that anyone who buys or receives this book will be delighted. And they will soon be in the kitchen, making magic.

  2. I've only tried one of the recipes so far and it was good, but the additional value of the book is the way it looks, the illustrations are really charming and the design, flawless. It would make a prefect gift.

  3. You cannot grow up in the south without being called "sweetie pie", "honey" or "sweet pea" or any derivitive thereof. Sweetie Pie and Jelly Roll combines this time honored tradition with a cookbook of favorite southern sweets. Interspersed between the recipes are memories of southern life. I think my favorite cook books are those that combine good food with good storytelling. The recipes cover candies, crumbles, pies (Peace Pie is a favorite), cakes, desserts, puddings (real cooked puddings...yummy) and sauces. You cannot pass up trying Christmas Orange Cake, Shoofly Pie, and Peannut Brittle ...all very easy and wonderful to eat. The watercolor illustrations enhance a very delightful book.

  4. First of all, the the illustrations are nice. That always makes me like a cook-book more for some reason. The baking tips, and how they are organized is really nice too.
This cookbook has it all when it comes to Southern snacks. From Peach Ice cream, to cream puffs to candies, and more. She captures the true Southern spirit. The story telling is nice, and there are some unique and interesting recipe's here too- like Fig Cake, and Shoofly pie.

  1. Junior League cookbooks are the best! This one has so many great and EASY recipes. My copy is covered in splattered ingredients because I use it all the time. My friends always rave about the "gourmet" food from this book -- I hate to tell them how easy it all is to make!
