  1. This book is more than a cookbook. Each section describes the setting, purpose and the details about the ingredients used. It is a history book, too. Even 'tho we have quick and easy ingredients, Edna beleived in doing things from scratch and the fresher the product, the better. Wonderful reading. The Parker House rolls and the Sweet Potatoe Pie are awesome!!!

  2. This book is an eye opener into the life and legacy of Edna Lewis. I tried some of the simple recipes and loved them, this book is like a treasure chest that will fill your home with the most amazing smells. And almost makes you want to move to the south!

  3. I bought this book as a gift without having seen it first hand.

The response was so exciting that I've given it again and again as well as bought one for myself...

If you are a person who enjoys reading cookbooks as well as trying new recipes and eating the delicious results, this unusually fine book is a triple treat for you & your lucky friends.

  4. I love Southern everything. Wanted to cook some authentic dishes, this was ok... I tried a few, then
got bored, not exactly super... not bad, but no stars in my eyes.

  5. After having purchased Miss Edna's book with Scott Peacock, I was sure I needed this one too - I was right! This book is a cookbook as well as a history book and provides great insight into a time forgotten by many. No you can't easily get hog jowls or some of the wild greens but you can take those concepts and apply them to today's ingredients. These recipes take me back to the simple but fabulous meals my grandmothers' and great aunts use to prepare from my childhood. I can still remember those tastes and how important the seasons were - the great expectations that autumn brought with it knowing the relatives would be coming up from 'Carolina' with the sweetest, crispest apples you could imagine or the popcorn made in the open fireplace as a treat while we cracked corn for the animals winter feed. All that and I was a City kid so imagine what it was like when you really lived that way every day. I didn't appreciate those recipes and the art of food preservation until it was too late - both grandmothers were gone but Miss Edna has provided some recipes and insight into those times. Her cookbooks provide a link to my past - a virtual hug and some very tasty comfort food.

If you're from the South, good cooking skills and between 50-60, I suggest you consider this book seriously. You don't want this food heritage to die.

  1. I absolutely love this book. The recipes are so simple and quick. I would love to give it as a gift but can no longer find it.

  2. I LOVE this book! It's just so nice to be able to grab a cookbook when you're in a huge hurry for dinner to be ready fast, that provides you wonderful menus and easy directions for meals in no time flat. The food is wonderful and there are even recipes for making them a little less fattening. If you can't find it here on amazon, check ebay and oxmoorhouse.com. You can almost always find one on these two sites.

  3. I just got this cookbook, and I LOVE it! It's so hard to decide what to make, when there are so many yummy, easy recipes!

  4. This is one great cookbook to have especially for busy moms (cooks) in your house. A couple of the recipes needed a little tweaking here and there but for the most part every recipe I've tried has been great! I love the details with pictures, grocery lists and ideas for sides with each meal. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Everything that I have tried in this book has been great!! It lists great short cuts (ie. the roasted chicken recipe that you can cook, chop up and freeze, later adding to any recipe that calls for cooked chicken) It has a little bit of everything in it!! Great!!!

5 comments about Southern Living 2006 Annual Recipes (Southern Living Annual Recipes).
  1. My wife and mother-in-law really love these Southern Living Annual Recipe books. I've purchased all the annual books & select other Sothern Living books for each of them for many years. Husbands & son-in-laws, purchasing these books is a quick & easy way to take care of part of your holiday & birthday shopping. Plus the food is great as well. Enjoy!!!

  2. Loved the quality of the recipes, layout and the pictures. Very nice quality cookbook!

  3. I have not made anything yet, but I can tell you this book is full of delicious recipes. I know right away if I will like a book based on how many recipes I find interesting. Every page I turned I was highlighting the recipes I wanted to try. I know I am going to enjoy this book. There are not that many photos that is why I gave it a 4 but the recipes seem so simple that you really won't need a picture to figure out how it should look.

  4. This is a beautiful book with all of Southern Living's recipes for 2006. You can feel assured that every recipe has been tested and tried by the Southern Living staff. Having one book with the recipes lets me now recycle all those magazines. I love the color pictures of some of the food and I love the seasonal recipes, since they are grouped by each month. Having the bonus section, which has recipes from the cook-off winners as well as slow-cooker recipes, is also a real plus. This book would make a nice gift as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to cook or simply sit and read a cookbook!

  5. Good recipes and easy to follow. I never miss a year of this annual book. They look great all lined up on a kitchen shelf. Makes me feel like I am a real cook. I recommend this series of cookbooks (yearly) instead of clipping them out of the magazine. I refer to them for ideas and I always find something. The annual Christmas Series is also worth buying.

  1. If you like down home southern cookin this is the book for you!! I bought this and her other cookbook. Love Them!

  2. I love to cook and as a cook, I love people who enjoy cooking as well. I feel like I know Mama Dip. I love this cookbook!!

  3. The recipes in this cookbook are fantastic. They are simple to make and absolutely delicious. Mama Dips has changed our long standing Thanksgiving tradition...her roated turkey recipe is so delectable we use this recipe now instead of the one that's been in use for the last 50 years. You won't go wrong with this cookbook. Highly recommended!!!

  4. The best pecan pie recipe in this book that I have ever found, and I have looked for one for years! It can be doubled to fit my Watkin's 10" deep dish pie pan without burning the pecans or the filling! I love it!

  5. Mama Dip's cookbook offers the best collection of recipes since _Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine_. The country-style scrambled eggs are more than authentic and delicious, as are the breakfast chicken biscuits. One doesn't have to be toothless to enjoy Grandpa's chicken and people of all ages will make the cream cheese pound cake disappear. Try the roast turkey for a moist, tender, flavorful bird that won't last much past the meal - if that far! The rib roast is practically unspeakable - offer this succulent delight to guests and watch their reactions. While dishes prepared in a "traditional" soul food style are front and center, there are some tasty surprises, such as the stuffed mushrooms. It takes a long time to try every targeted recipe because there are so many, with nine of ten recipes bona fide hits. You won't be disappointed!

  1. I love this calendar. When I ordered this calendar, I didn't realize it was an appointment calendar but still really like it. Its a nice size with plenty of space to write and so colorful and full of recipes (something that I didn't know it would have!) I hope I can continue to get one each year.

5 comments about Frank Stitt's Southern Table: Recipes and Gracious Traditions from Highlands Bar and Grill.
  1. Frank Stitt's Southern Table is truly a masterpiece. I am a Southerner and was raised on the wonderful flavors that form the recipes in this book. I love that Stitt showcases humble vegetables that can be found at any Southern farmer's market and presents them in impeccable fashion. His philosophy on using the freshest, in-season ingredients is wonderful advice for all cooks. I also keep this book on my coffee-table and I often read his charming writings on Southern food and the culture that surrounds cooking and eating in the South. I recommend this cookbook above all others. My family has adored everything I have made from this cookbook. I recommend the Lowcountry Red Rice, Pimento Cheese, All the cookie recipes, Spiced Pecans, and the fabulous section on perfectly mixed cocktails. This cookbook has got me planning a trip to Birmingham for the sole purpose of eating at the Highlands Bar and Grille.

  2. I have this cookbook, ordered another for a friend and it was in perfect condition, as stated.

  3. Wow!! This cookbook rocks. I've recently bought over a dozen Southern cooking cookbooks and this is the BEST hands down. Frank Stitt's recipes are inspiring. No longer does Southern Food need to be somewhat bland and heavy. I'm ordering my Gourmet Cook daughter a copy for her birthday in a couple of weeks. I know she'll love it.

  4. I'm just a regular mom who likes to plunk down with a really good cookbook and try new gourmet recipes to amaze and delight my family. Lets just say that my 3 year old toddler and husband look forward to dinner every night that I pull out Frank Stitt's cookbook. Some recipes make me crazy, especially when I have to flip through 3 different pages to get various related recipes such as sauces, but oh what heavenly delight if you persevere and see the recipe through to completion. I can't say enough good things about this book - makes one appreciate the time, effort and loving care that is evident in the recipes. The sauce gribiche is worth the price of admission. The book feels like an old friend, calling me every few days to try another recipe. What a fantastic chef. This cookbook rivals my other beloved and tattered cookbook " The French Recipe cookbook" by Clements and Wolf-Cohen. You will NOT be disappointed if you get this book. 5 star rating all the way.

  5. I have only eaten at Highlands Bar and Grill once and it was the best food i have ever eaten in a restaurant, a pinnacle moment, like the first time I saw Pantera play live. It beats out many so-called fancy hip places in many of the major cities of the country. The food at Highlands can be simple and complicated simultaneously. This book takes the philosophy of the restaurant and shares some its secrets. What you will find is that many of the best meals are made from simple, fresh ingredients. It is a book that I have read and used more than I thought I would.

The book has chapters covering various topics: adult beverages, appetizers, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetables, desserts, a section on commonly used sauces, dressings, etc., and some tips on kitchen equipment and techniques. there are lots of very nice photographs throughout the book including pictures of the various dishes, local farmers, and other people.

You will find the food can be very Southern (e.g. Spoonbread), or the recipes are infused with the French flavors that Frank Stitt leans toward. Most of the recipes are actually not that complicated or difficult. Some are super easy like potato cakes. Since i cook mostly sweet treats, I have focused on some real jewels here. One of the coolest sweet thangs here is Brown Butter Almond Financier - a slightly more complicated recipe than the usual cake, but well worth the effort.

It's quite fashionable to talk about buying local produce these days, but Frank Stitt has been pushing this idea for years and years. He emphasizes fresh ingredients and using what you have locally both for the benefit of the flavor and the benefit of the people who make our food. I also like that Frank Stitt can be very practical at times - when discussing buying a mandoline, he recommends an inexpensive plastic model over the expensive steel versions.

By the way, the best food i've ever eaten isn't in a restaurant. my mom makes that food.

  1. The book is funny at points. I expected more recipes. I listened to the audio version, read by the author herself. She employs liberal use of the callback, so much so that she latches on to a few key phrases and repeats them to the point of browbeating. The recipes are sickening. I could barely stand to listen. If those women actually eat that way, it's no wonder they are all saving for lipsuction. If I heard her say "one runningoverteaspoon of vanilla" one more time, I was gonna find her and punch her in the face. Just say a teaspoon and a half of vanilla! The part about her mother having a stroke makes her seem incredibly selfish and coldhearted. Maybe being dispassionate is just her way of coping.

  2. I bought this book after I seen the title and browsed at it and had to buy it, I love the ladies who wrote this, just like being with a friend, hillarious (if I spelled that right!) The recipes are fantastic, like "Pig Candy" its really good!!!!! You cooks know what you are doing when you make a recipe, including licking the spoon, eating half the batter etc. "NO PLAIN, PLENTY GAIN COFFEE CAKE!!, my favorite expression in the recipes is "One running over teaspoon of vanilla" and a recipe for "Actual Apple Cake" plus all their little stories and funny stuff, this is a great gift for the person who cooks and has a sense of humor, and surely will make some of the recipes, No Fat Free recipes are included I believe, or they would never had wrote the book. If you know a person who cooks, and is funny, this is a great funny recipe book

  3. Hey this skinny melinky kid from the Bronx (me) laughed myself silly through 3 or 4 commutes to and from work-- loving this book!

You can BET I'm gonna make (and eat and G-d help whoever tries to take a portion of it from me!) all of those recipes -- especially that Hostess Twinky Pie!

A great book with irreverent wit, humor, great cuss words, sensitivity in the right places and a Boe-Day-Shuss (hey I'm from the Bronx -- we can't spell Southern words) outlook on life and..... foodies!!

  4. I love, love, love this book. Everyone wants to borrow it. It is so funny and it's a cookbook too. Great gift. It does have some swear words. So if that offends you don't buy, but otherwise it is a HOOT!!!
Anyone would love to know how to make "Pig Candy" right.......

  5. This book was given to me by my sheep shearer after my mom died. I was sad and she knew I needed to smile again. And smile I did. And share I have with others needing to smile. (actually - laugh out loud). I read it out loud to my husband and he laughed with me. I am again ordering 3 more. Friends keep wanting to borrow my copy, so I keep them on hand to give away. It helps that the recipes are really good. My husband loves the Margarita recipe best. We have tried many of the recipes and been pleasantly surprised that they are each keepers, and become regulars on our menus. I would not be without this cookbook, read it again and laugh again each time.

5 comments about Southern Living Slow-Cooker Cookbook (Southern Living).
  1. Nearly every recipe relies heavily on canned soup, processed cheese, bottled sauce, etc. Not my idea of home cooking. I'm donating this one to the library book sale.

  2. Since I went back to working full time, I thought, "hey, what a great opportunity to really use my crockpot." So I bought this cookbook, banking on the Southern Living name. The recipes are OK, but there are way too many that require you to cook at high for 1 hour, then switch to low for 4 hours, etc. These are mostly meat dishes. Others say cook the first 5 ingredients for 3 hours, then add such & such and continue cooking for 2 more hours. Well, if I'm at work, how am I supposed to switch the temperature or add ingredients? Even the "programmable" crockpots won't let you change temps after x number of hours. And the book tells you that to avoid the temperature change, you can brown the meat first, etc. Well, when I'm trying to get ready for work and get three kids ready for school and daycare at 6:30 in the morning, what I really DON'T need is to have to precook my crockpot meal. The beauty of the thing is that you're supposed to throw everything in and let it go all day (not 4-5 hrs) and then it's done when you come home. These recipes need too much attention.

  3. I have a lot of cookbooks, but this has to be one of the best. I have used the Southern Living Slow cooker cookbook almost everyday since I purchased it in November and every meals has received wonderful reviews.

  4. Love the recipes, the layout, and the results! Good food with little effort and less electricity.

  5. As a commuter of 80+ mi/day and someone who wants to put a good meal on the table at night, this book saves me every time! I have had it for over 3 years, I have never had a bad experience with any of the recipes in this book (which I cannot say that for my Betty Crocker Slow-Cooker Cookbook) and I still discover new treasures. Plus, we always have enough leftovers for at least one lunch--much better than cafeteria food!

The variety is excellent and there's a chapter on "Living Light" which both my husband and I have enjoyed at least as much as the full-up recipes. If you buy one cookbook, make it this one. And if you have trouble getting home in time to turn off the pot, get a Slow-Cooker with the built in timer--it's worth every pennny.

5 comments about Southern Living 2005 Annual Recipes (Southern Living Annual Recipes).
  1. Where else can you find so many recipes all carefully tested in the Southern Living Test Kitchens in Birmingham? This annual volume collects the best recipes from a year's worth of magazines. It's a great collection in a kitchen-friendly format. Of course we especially liked the Thanksgiving recipes excerpted from our own book, "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban."

Southern American regional cooking at its best and a nice gift for anyone who loves great food...

  2. I bought this as a gift and it was greatly appreciated.Southern Living always has a highly rated product.

  3. This cookbook has pretty much anything one would want to prepare. I have not cooked much from it yet, but the recipes look easy enough. The 2005 magazines had so many wonderful recipes, and I love how this book compiles all of them!

  4. The recipies in these Southern Living cookbooks are pretty good for the most part, but the organization is a disaster. No sections for types of recipies, such as cakes, vegetables, meat, they just put it all together in "menus" which you then have to read through to find anything. Too much work, its almost an accident when I actually find what I'm looking for. I'm glad I bought them used so that the price was about right for what they are.

  5. I received this cookbook as a gift about a year ago. It honestly set on the shelf for months before I really looked at it. I do not read Southern Living magazine and I usually do not like recipes in magazines in general. These recipes are not what you usually see in magazines. All the ones I have tried are very suitable for cooking at home. For the most part the recipes call for everyday ingredients that are easily found in your regular grocery store. It is divided into months of the year, so that's handy for incorporating seasonal produce. I like how recipes are grouped together so all the recipes you would want for a meal are next to each other on the same page. You may like this or not. Another reviewer mentioned that it was hard to find something specific and that is true. However the general index isn't bad as most recipes are listed by their name and their main ingredient. There is also a month-by-month index which seems like a waste of space since it is in the same order as the book itself.
