  1. I bought this book several years ago and use it often. I love to cook and this one has some great recipes. A few of my favorites are the salmon bourbon marinade, the Chilis marinade, the spinach artichoke dip recipe and the bbq ribs. So many good ones. This is my favorite of his cookbooks.

  2. I bought this book when my daughter had her wisdom teeth out and could only eat soft foods. One of the foods she wanted was The Cheescake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake. I saw this recipe in the book so I bought it as sort of a joke. Well she loved it. It contains tons of great recipes from restaurants that she goes to.Some of these recipes do look a little complicated but they all come with detailed instructions. If you like to eat out and like to cook, this book is for you.

  3. The book arrived earlier than expected. I am already using it. I would order from them again.

  4. this was in great shape as advertised, and I am very pleased with the purchase.

  5. I remember exactly where I was and what year it was when I first came upon this book. It was August of 2001 and it was in front of a wells fargo bank (the kind that is in a big office building) there was a sidewalk book sale and this book was sitting there in all it's glory. I bought it and brought it home. From these books I have made the Planet Hollywoods Crunch chicken, jalepeno poppers, pizza hut pizza, Bloomin onion with the dip. And so many others. These cookbooks are the most tabbed. My copy burned in a fire and I just bought his new book yesterday. My 13 year old Autistic son whom was expecting a expensive video game that I did not buy him assumed that the book was for him and was OVERJOYED. For kids it is fabulous to say tonight we are having Big Mac's or Tony Roma's ribs. Or olive garden food. They really believe you can make it at home and are excited. And it is way cheaper. Tomorrow I am making Chilis molten cake... Only three ingrediants and the recipe is free with a video demo on his website.

  1. I bought this book for my boyfriend's dad for Christmas, and had the pleasure of sampling two of the recipes: Oyster soup and collards with poblanos and chorizo. The recipes were simple, fast and absolutely delicious. He also had rave reviews about the simple roasted chicken.

The thing that caught my eye about this book were the beautiful pictures and the simplicity of the recipes. I like the lifestyle that the book promotes---it's that easy, laid-back, southern attitude that brings simple ingredients together to create something that explodes with flavor in your mouth and makes you say: "Why didn't I think of doing it that way?"

I hope to sample many more of the recipes, and look forward to seeing future cookbooks by the Lee brothers.

  2. This is the only item I've ever returned to Amazon.com. I actually bought two of the Lee Bros. books. The other being the Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook. I like that one very much and would rate it at least a 4, but I did not find but one recipe in this Simple Fresh Southern book I would ever cook. I'm in the South but this is not my south. It may be better for coastal southerners? This is also the first review I've ever written. I buy a lot from Amazon.com and am certainly excited about most things I buy. Not this one!

  3. I saw the Lee brothers on an interview and thought this would be an interesting cookbook. Sorry to say it was not. The recipes were uninspired. I returned the book.

  4. Simple Fresh solves a big problem in my kitchen- a deep love of southern flavor and the need to lighten up on the day to day. Sure, collards soaked in lard and pulled pork sandwiches are great, but only once in a while. Catfish croutons, now that's something I can eat and enjoy any day of the week. Thanks guys!

  5. I got this cookbook for my birthday in January (I had it in my Amazon wish list) but I didn't cook out of it until I went to visit family in Naples, FL. Made the Shrimp Creole with fresh Gulf shrimp over corn grits and the green beans with orange segments. Dynamite. Very fresh, very "healthy" style with B I G flavor, and especially good with Southeast ingredients. While here I got a chance to read the cookbook section on vegetables and side dishes and I found lots of things that will work for me on the South Beach Diet. I'm going to search out their first cookbook as well.

This is "Southern Cooking" with all the GOOD parts - the fresh seafood and vegetables in particular - without the overhead of huge amounts of fat and sugar. Don't let the "Southern" let you evoke Paula Deen's definition of Southern cooking and put you off...

  1. If I had looked at the recipes in this book, i would not have purchased it. For instance, her fudge calls for bread crumbs... what is up with that? Most of these recipes are not "everyday" type of recipes. I guess if you are really into different things, then this cookbook might be for you. I like the "family" style about the book, however.

  2. I bought this cookbook as a Christmas gift for my mother. She loves Paula Deen and her cooking. It has some awesome recipes from Paula as well as members of her family. If you are a fan of Paula Deen and of down home cooking, then this cookbook is for you.

  3. Received the cookbook very quickly and is such an incredible "Food Bible"....Use it often. Was a Christmas Present to myself,

  4. I love Paula! This book is good by all means, but I was looking for
recipes with less indrigients and more items that I might have instock in the kitchen.

  5. Great easy recipies! Aunt Peggy's Meat Loaf and the Mashed Sweet Potatoes with a kick are my favorites! Even if you're not a cook, this book makes it easy to make great food that anyone will love!

  1. This book was in perfect condition. The service to have the book shipped was right on time.

  2. I bought three of these cookbooks for Xmas gifts this year for my three daughters-in-law, who love to cook. I knew it would spark their interest to try to duplicate recipes from restaurants they love. They are all amazing cooks to begin with. Just from checking the recipes in the book I could tell the girls would have a great time experimenting with these dishes. The books arrived on time and in perfect condition.

  3. If you buy this book for no other reason, buy it for the Olive Garden chicken scampi recipe. That is the only entree I like at Olive Garden, and Todd Wilbur nails it! It will be your favorite family recipe, as well as your favorite company coming recipe. It is awesome. Every recipe I have tried of his has been very good.

  4. I purchased this book some time ago and made several recipes from the book. There was one recipe in particular that was well received from family and friends, "pasta fagiole" a clone from the Olive Garden. One of my friends was so in love with the recipe that I ordered the book for her.Top Secret Restaurant Recipes 2: More Amazing Clones of Famous Dishes from America's Favorite Restaurant Chains

  5. This was a gift for my mother. We really enjoy eating out and wondered if we could find recipes for the foods we love. When I saw this book on amazon I thought I would give it a try. My mom has already made the red lobster cheddar bay biscuits, which tasted almost identical to the restaurant's biscuits, which we just love. She has also tried the pasta e fagioli from the olive garden. That was also good. But you might want to add a little more v-8 juice than the recipe calls for. Because withiut it the soup was a little thick. I look forward to trying more of our favorites.

  1. This book if so filled with wonderful southern style recipes. The fact that this book has been around for 50 years and is still a great seller- testifies for itself!

  2. A truly great cookbook that is as much fun to read as it is to cook with. The way Southern cooking was done for so many generations. There isn't another cookbook available that has these fabulous recipes that have been handed down through family for so many generations. Don't hesitate to try the Breakfast Shrimp (better known today as Shrimp and Grits). You will love this book!!

  3. Charleston Receipts is a classic! I received my own copy as a wedding shower gift...my mom wrote notes next to all of her favorite recipes and those of her mother. Shrimp Paste is a Charleston classic. Breakfast shrimp - great with grits! The Chicken Tetrazzini freezes well. New Year's Day wouldn't be complete without Hopping John. In addition, the Gullah verses (and their translations) and the sketches, watercolors and prints of the Lowcountry are a treat to look at while your recipes are cooking.

  4. Charleston, SC has always been known for her gracious hospitality and her wonderful food. The women of Charleston have been entertaining for over 300 years, and Charleston Receipts by the Junior League of Charleston is celebrating its 59th year. Although I'm not sure why Charlestonians call receipes "receipts," I do know that this cookbook is a true classic.

Charleston Receipts was originally published as a fund-raiser by the Junior League for a mere $150 investment. It contains 750 recipes and has seen few changes over the years (although they're now being made out of recycled paper). The book I bought is from the 33rd printing and by my calculations, over 807,000 books have been published. This is America's oldest Junior League cookbook still in print. The profits from Charleston Receipts have been used to support a wide variety of charitable activities.

What makes Charleston Receipts such a classic are the low country recipes. Some have been passed down through centuries and they come from many of the most influential names in Charleston history including Ravenel, Legare, Frost, Laurens, Jenkins, Alston, Maybank, Pringle, and Whaley. Check out the Charleston specialties like benne wafers, she-crab soup, and anything that includes shrimp, oysters or rice. Sometimes the recipes will include a little history as well. The recipe for Regent's Punch is from Lewisfield Plantation in 1783. This book is also filled with sketches, verses, a conversion chart, equivalents, helpful cooking hints and menu suggestions.

Many local writers refer to Charleston Receipts in their own books, the latest being Pat Conroy in South of Broad. After finally purchasing a copy for myself, I can see why this has become such a gem.

  5. Charleston Receipts remains the stuff of legend. In my native South Carolina it has always been the Bible of genteel Southern cooking and a must have for entertaining and gracious living.

The recipes in this book provide a link between our modern world, mid 20th century America and our Colonial past. Many of them date back almost two centuries being adapted by each generation to fit their modern needs and conveniences.

The Benne Wafer recipes are legendary since they date to the earliest days of the colony of Carolina. The mixture and influence of African culture shines through in this most Charleston of cookies. The recipe is mentioned in Pat Conroy's works on more than one occasion. Likewise, the recipe for fudge can also be found referenced in his work "The Lords of Discipline."

To cook from Charleston Receipts is to connect with the best of Charleston: it's grace, it's style, it's hospitality, and it's fusion of African and English cultures.

Certainly, the book you want to have on your shelf if you are to assume the mantel of "Southern Cook."

  1. Whenever I feel homesick, the Lee Bros' cookbook is one of the first places I turn. Certainly not the definitive Southern cookbook, but it strikes a balance between modernity and tradition in a way that seems natural. The recipes I have tested so far have all been hits and, while labor intensive, are accessible enough for a novice like myself. I've considered buying an ice cream maker just to try the boiled peanut and sorghum swirl ice cream.

  2. This is a great cookbook for directions and traditional recipes of the South. It is especially useful for those who grew up dining on these great foods but never quite learned to reproduce. I have found it to be a valuable tool in my job as I often field food preparation questions.
    Thanks

  3. The same old thing on southern cooking. Take a long hard look before you buy! Very disappointing. Most southern cookbooks will have the same recipes, except this book added some "glam" to it's publishing. Either get your money back or give it to the local library.

  4. The Lee Bros. have quick become new icons in the world of Southern cuisine, and it's because they recognize what makes this food -- namely, the heritage ingredients. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an accurate, well tested view of Southern cooking -- old and new. And I would also recommend the restaurant they discuss in their podcast -- The Glass Onion in Charleston -- as a leader in good, Southern cookin as well. On your next Southern trip make a stop there -- [...] -- for local, all natural deliciousness.

  5. This was an excellent edition to my cookbook library. I have other Southern cookbooks, this provides a little different slant to Southern cooking.

  1. I purchased this book for my vegetarian daughter wnd she is very pleased with it.

  2. I received my products in a timely fashion and in excellent condition...I would certainly recommend this seller to others...Thank you and may God bless and prosper you.

  3. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. You can make super vegan food without spending tons of time in the kitchen and the ingredients are easy to find (even if, like me, you don't live in a big city). The writing style is engaging and the sidebar notes add to the fun. I highly recommend this book.

  4. I am a Southerner and usually eat vegan at home so this cookbook has turned into one of my favorites. The collard greens are the tastiest I've ever had and can please even a picky eater of greens. The author lists his top ten favorite recipes from the book up front and those are the ones I've started with (grits with tempeh, arugala with roasted beets). They have all been wonderful and not too difficult to prepare.

Another unique aspect of this cookbook is that each recipe comes with a intro, a recommended soundtrack, and sometimes a movie. (How to Eat Watermelon in Front of White People and Enjoy It is on my Netflix queue right now!) What a fun read. I purchased two more of these cookbooks for friends who are trying some vegan out at home but love their Southern favorites.

  5. Bryant Terry is a social-justice pioneer who uses food as one of many tools in his activist arsenal. In addition to being a Natural Gourmet grad, he is the acclaimed co-author of Grub (with Anna Lappé), a regular columnist on [...], a community organizer (The Food and Society Policy Fellows Program; b-healthy!), and a much sought-after speaker. With this recipe, success is inevitable. Vegan Soul Food is more manifesto than recipe book. He pairs each recipe with a suggested soundtrack, "to be enjoyed while cooking and eating." Try to resist Cajun-Creole-Spiced Tempeh Pieces with Creamy Grits, matched with John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." VSF focuses on local, sustainable, organic, real food, and Terry encourages you to be "freestyle and be creative. Explore the food, word, images, and music." With 150 recipes, this can't miss classic will have you kissing your Collard Confetti without missing a beat.

  1. This cookbook is amazing, wonderful stories, photos and recipes made this book a great Christmas gift.

  2. Great book on New Orleans cuisine. Some people may find the recipes make too large a quantity, but it is great for planning parties. Also love the photos and historical info.

  3. And they do not stand by their products. If you have a defective product and use "the wrong language" they will not replace that product. Be warned.

  4. I am from New Orleans and have been living in Atlanta for the last 15 years. This book brings me home in more ways than the recipes. It is a great book about New Orleans and the cuisine.

  5. Great Creole recipes, wonderfully illustrated cookbook with aspect into the Chef's family life and influences.

Not a diet cookbook by any stretch of the imagination. Not the cuisine for everyday fare, but a fantastic resource for the special occasions.

Take it from someone who lived most of their life in South Louisiana, and nine years in the New Orleans area, this one is a valuable addition to your cooking library. I would also receommend "Real Cajun", by Chef Donald Link.

    Regards...

  1. This book is great! I thought it was going to be a cutesy kid's cookbook with overly simple recipes in it, maybe a book of kids snacks or something. Well, I was surprised to see that these recipes are delicious and great to cook for meals for the whole family! Gumbo, mac and cheese, everything that Tiana would haave on the menu in her restaurant in the movie. I gave this cookbook 5 stars because my little girls love it, and so do I!

  2. This made a great little gift. I wish it was spiral-bound. That would make it easier to flip through & to keep steady while cooking. Other than that, very nice.

  3. So far, I've only made the beignets-and they were delicious. I'm looking forward to trying more recipes, it may become my go-to Creole style cookbook. I agree with some of the others who noted that most of the recipes aren't entirely kid friendly and require adult supervision. I'm looking forward to using it with my children in the future.

  4. My daughter loves, loves, loves this book. The recipes are simple enough for her to understand and follow on her own with very limited help from me. The first thing she made was "Swamp-Water Smoothies" yum!

  5. I am highly impressed with the quality of this cookbook! Both my mother & mother-in-law agree that it has some very promising, authentic recipes. My daughters and I are super-excited about getting to try these things out :) I thought it would be more cutesy than anything... but it's actually very genuine, and I think that's excellent!
