  1. I was in the Tsunami in Thailand. This isn't for sympathy, just perspective. I lost a collection of cookbooks that spanned over 30 years of selection. Now I'm living in Bangkok, ordering new books. Everyone knows you really only need three books: "The Joy of Cooking", "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and James Beard's "American Cookery". Since they are very hard to find over here in Thailand, I elected to order them on-line from Amazon. While doing this, my attention was drawn to another cookbook by James Beard, "Soups". What a disappointment. "American Cookery", 877 pages with 19 pages of soup recipes was $15.72. "Soups" by James Beard and undoubtaby numerous staff was $7.16 for 63 pages and a whopping 35 recipes. The recipes are the usual and could have been written in an afternoon. What a rip-off. I love Amazon but when you can't feel, touch and open the book, sometimes you just don't know. Shame on James Beard for allowing this little hackneyed book to go to press with his name on it.

  1. This is a very good collection of a few classic and quite a few not so classic soup recipes which are easy to follow and are accompanied by glossy color photos. You will also find a few garnishing ideas to give some extra dimension and flair if you want to impress your guests. Well worth the price

  2. When the days become long, the body becomes lethargic and even the tar is beginning to melt, the last place one wants to be is in a hot kitchen. Summer is the season for quick, light meals that don't take a lot of time, but restore your energy. But if you do have to get into the kitchen, rather than throwing together the customary salad, how about a bowl of soup after that dip in the pool?

Consulting editor Debra Mayhew has combed the four corners of the globe to bring together a collection of wonderful recipes in The Soup Bible.

Stirring in tips for making stock, garnishes, and notes on how to pick the best ingredients, these soups are designed not just for summer, but those occasions that call for something special, as well as those chilly winter nights when all you want to do is curl up with a good book and a warm hearty bowl:

Light and Refreshing: Gazpacho (the ultimate in summer soups), Vichyssoise, Summer Tomato Soup, Watercress and Orange Soup (what an interesting combination)

One-Pot Meal Soups: Seafood and Sausage Gumbo, Spinach and Lemon Soup with Meatballs (traditionally known in Greece as Avgolomono without the meatballs), and Creole Shrimp

Hearty Lunch and Supper Soups: Lentil Soup with Rosemary, Italian Arugula and Potato Soup, Pistou (a scrumptious French vegetable soup), and New England Clam Chowder

Special Occasion: Butternut Squash Bisque, Tomato and Fresh Basil Soup, Spinach and Rice Soup (a nice and sneaky way for parents to add a vegetable in a meal for those picky-eater kids) and Saffron-Mussel Soup.

The book is full of exquisite, mouth-watering photographs and even the soup bowls both rustic and elegant are beautifully displayed.

With over 200 recipes to prepare for friends and family, it's a world tour of soups.

    Fresh bread required.

  3. This book has over 200 recipes. I have used many of the recipes and enjoyed most of them. I have given copies of the book to friends and other friends have chosen to buy this book after seeing it at my home. It is an essential book in my cooking book library.

  1. 120 soup recipes, each illustrated in color with three photos of the steps of preparation, and one large photo of each finished recipe are featured by this latest book by Carole Clements. Her 6 years of training in Paris with Simone Beck, (the mentor of Julia Child), comes into play with her thoughtful enumerations of alternative vegetables and seasonings, and insistence on fresh ingredients. I enjoy the wholesome goodness and rich taste of soups, but feel the need to add a continental touch to a normally commplace item. I feel this exhaustive treatment by a La Varenne seasoned chef, offers a clear map to this objective. I find it an exciting and important addition to my recipe bookshelf

Probably no one will have the last word in soup, but this comes close..Leland Kreid

  1. This book is a great collection of different soups for different moods. They also all incorporate several similar ingrediants, but stick to a great variety. My only complaint is the lack of calorie, fat, protein and carb counts. That would be helpful.

  2. I've had this cookbook for a while now and have used it to make soups over the past two winters. Many of the recipes within it have become family favorites that we make over and over. The split pea soup with ham and French onion soup gratinee can't be beat! Other favorites include: black bean soup with sausage, avgolemono and lamb and chickpea soup. Overall a great cookbook that will bring many hours of cooking and eating pleasure!

3 comments about Latin Ladles: Fabulous Soups & Stews from the King of Nuevo Latino Cuisine.
  1. The perfect compliment to Douglas Rodriguez's "Nuevo Latino" book. This new book reintroduces us to the latin style of cooking present by Mr. Rodriguez. A must for those of us who enjoy and love soups. The extensive fare of soups and stews are hearty enough to be the main dish in any meal. The book provides an good introduction to the style and background to the cooking style. Each of the recipes is preceded by a short but highly interesting description of the dish and some of its ingredients. The instruction are simple and easy to follow.

If I have to point out a flaw, and I do find one, its the book's presentation. This book's content is so good why isn't the actual book so. "Nuevo Latino" is stunningly presented as a hard cover book but "Latin Ladles" is not, it is only available in paper back form. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

  2. I'm not a fan of most cookbooks, but Latin Ladles scores big points. The descriptions are entertaining but concise, the ingredients are well explained and the directions are thorough. The soups are more like meals and preparation is a big part of most recipes. If you're looking for unique recipes with complex flavors you've come to the right cookbook. Oh, I love soft-backed books and that makes this book a 5 for me.

  3. This is an excellent cookbook. The soups/stews are hearty and can make a meal all by themselves. I especially like this cookbook because I have most of the ingredients in the pantry and I can make these soups on days that I have been busy and don't have time to go to the grocery store or for a long involved meal. The flavors are wonderful and the recipes adapt well to personal tastes.

  1. I first came across this cookbook in a reader's preview version, typos and all. It went on to become my very favorite soup book. The recipes are straight-forward but yield delicious soups with assertive flavors. I don't think I have ever made a bad recipe from this book! Especially good is Spicy Black Bean Soup and Chicken Rosemary Soup. Also the White Gazpacho is different and wonderfully cool for the summer. Give it a try!

  2. One of my absolute favorite cookbooks that I picked up years ago on a clearance bin and until ... could not find again. Plan on buying several copies as gifts as every recipe I have made has been terrific, especially the vegetable ones like the Butternut Squash, Ginger Carrot or Asparagus Taragon. Just made the Mullagatawny with chicken tonight - yum! Recipes handle improvisation really well and they all have a lot of flavor.

  3. This is one of the few cook books that answers all questions you have and whose recipies don't require any adjustment. A wonderful addition to the cookbook shelf.

  4. The Spicy Sausage Chili recipe alone was worth the price of the book. My husband and I love chili and this was delicious. It's also great to have a cookbook that contains everyday ingredients. Nothing more frustrating than finding what looks like a great recipe only to discover that it includes items so exotic that you have to go to a specialty store to find them!

  5. I've tried a few soups from this book so far, and had excellent results. The cream of mushroom, in particular, is wonderful. Very clear and easy-to-follow recipes, as well as explanations of ingredients. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves soup as much as I.
