- It is a great soup, dessert, bread receipies. Everything I tried was excellent,. I now want a copy of my own, and I can't find it anywhere. Do you have any suggestions??
- I've made wonderful soups from this book and sometimes I make the accompanying recipes also. Everything has turned out well. I've never tried making any of the breads though. Who has time?
- I have made the Chicken and Dill Soup recipe for our family and also for 2 sick friends. It helped "cure" these two wonderful ladies of their respiratory illnesses. I really do believe it has medicinal qualities.
I have also made the carrot soup which is delicious. And, I have made the 4 cheese Fettucine Alfredo, also, very rich and delicious. A little serving goes a long way!

- This book has gotten good reviews by others but I am a little less enthusiastic about it.
Certainly I love the concept of teaching about gardening and how food makes it's way from the soil to our plates; but the artwork, I think, gets in the way of making this a superior 5-Star text.
For example, the abstract art [bold and attractive] is okay for demonstrating seeds sitting in the soil, but it is not very good for actually showing what a squash blossom looks like. For all you can tell, it's a open tulip on a vine. Likewise the corn is shown as being orange instead of yellow.
Four Stars. This book gives children an idea of how food goes from the ground to the bowl, but if you are looking for a book that will give your young child an accurate picture of what growing veggies look like, you'll have to keep searching.
- As well as being attractive and quite an easy read (my five year old managed it), it encourages children to be interested in vegetables-both growing and eating them. Great book.
- As a teacher, I have always loved this book. The bold colors hold children's attention, and it fits well with lessons for younger children on what seeds/plants need to grow, the growing process and includes a recipe for making your own vegetable soup. For early childhood teachers,it can become an early science/social studies/math lesson and also a parent/child activity. A must have!
- This small board book is simply and beautifully illustrated in bright flat colors. Usually the illustrations are very understandable and clear, but occasionally the color contrast between the object and the background is poor making the object disappear into the background. The main text is in large bold print and simple language; however, the labels for each object are in very small print, making them difficult for my older eyes to read. My 3 year old enjoys the book. Its a beautiful book and I would buy it again; however, I would check out some of the larger formats of the book first.
- This book came bent by Amazon and there is no phone number to contact for returns. I did not have a printer attched to my computer so when I went through their online return process it said to print out a return label, I could not do that and so there was no one to contact and no way to return the book. DONT BUY FROM AMAZON!!!!

- I was hoping for something maybe a little more gourmet. I realize you can only do so much with hamburger. Hamburger Helper is probably still the way to go.

5 comments about Kafka's Soup: A Complete History of World Literature in 14 Recipes.
- this is so much fun for someone who not only loves to read but loves to cook.
- Crick has produced a small but rich volume that pays homage to writers from Homer to Raymond Chandler and if there is a false note struck anywhere, I cannot detect it. As an added bonus, the recipes look to be perfectly wonderful all by themselves.
Crick begins with the hilarious Chandler shtick centered on Lamb with Dill Sauce. "It was time to deal with the butter and flour so I mixed them together into a paste and added it to the stock. There wasn't a whisk, so using my blackjack I beat out any lumps until the paste was smooth." Almost makes me sorry I come equipped with three different whisks and not a blackjack in sight.
Speaking in the articulate phrasing of the Marquis de Sade, Crick manages to make fun of politically correct cuisine with its "naive trust in low-fat yogurt" and celebrate the sensuality of food with a story about an innocent maiden forced to observe a hypocritical judge as he lecherously prepares Boned Stuffed Poussins. Makes you quiver, it does.
The Harold Pinter playlet titled "Cheese on Toast" features ciabatta and eggplant and mozzarella and, I swear it, you can taste the results before you've finished reading. My tummy growls in frustration for I have none of the aforementioned ingredients on hand.
So far, my favorite is the gem in the voice of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, titled "Coq au Vin." There is a priest tormented by mosquitos and a mulatta cook who prepares a last meal for a murderer, Fidel Agosto Santiago, and the meal is the tough carcass of the fabled fighting cock, El Jaguaracito, donated by its owner, the Syrian. It's all there -- drama, rich characterization and food so wonderful it will make you weep.
I love to read and I love to cook. It's hard to imagine a single book that combines those two pleasures more perfectly than this one does. This book will hold a place of pride and joy in my cookbook collection. Now -- I wonder if I can find a blackjack on eBay?
- It is no wonder this $14.95 little book sells new for $3 at Amazon. Once you see how bad it is you couldn't give it away. To anyone who is REALLY interested in authors and their food, this is embarrassingly bad, and a terrible read. It should come with Malox.
- Very happy with the 2 copies of this book. They arrived safely packed and very prompt. Many thanks.
- I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is a great lover of literature. She loved it, and she and her partner enjoyed reading aloud to each other from it. Some of the recipes even look pretty good. The only complaint is that it's so short for the price. Another few recipes would have made it more worth while. This said, I'll probably order it again as a gift for another friend...just not somehting I'd buy for myself.

4 comments about Soup Suppers: More Than 100 Main-Course Soups and 40 Accompaniments.
- Arthur Schwarts makes my moth water each time I read his supper ideas in "Soup Suppers...". However, making his recipes calls for more committment.
This isn't a book of elaborate recipies, just a book thats not for working couples who come home exhausted at the end of the day. That said, each recipe I have made from this book has turned out fantastic, a dish I would be proud to serve for company along with the many accompanyments he suggests. If you have the time to make a nicer meal and the time to shop for good ingredients, or if you just want a book with fantastic meal ideas for when you are going to have company, this book is for you. If you are looking for a day-to-day cookbook and are too busy to make elaborate meals, then I would recommend Schwartz's earlier book, "What to Cook When You Think There's Nothing in the House to Eat" instead.
- Soup is food for the soul, and this book proves it. The recipes are easy to follow, and produce the most wonderful experiences with soup you will ever have. I have had this book for two years, and it is the only cook book that I have used weekly, especially during winter. I highly suggest adding this book to your library, and I promise your family will thank you time and time again.
- I adore this book.... each recipe I've tried is a treasure. When I'm creating one of Arthur Schwartz' soups for my own family, I feel warm & fuzzy....like I'm cooking next to grandma! His recipe for Garbure, a fabulous, hearty French peasant soup, is one of the finest things one could eat on a cold winter day. Arthur's Polish Creamed Mushroom Barley Soup is also fantastic. I collect cookbooks, & this is easily one of my favorites.
- I am this author's biggest fan! I have given his "What to Cook When There's Nothing in the House to Eat" book to many people over the years as bridal shower and new home presents. This book is the perfect companion for the soup lover who already owns the other book. I remember when Mr. Schwartz was the food editor at the NY Daily News newspaper (early 1990's I think) and I used to eagerly await his articles on Wednesdays and Sundays. For those who know what I'm talking about, his recipes are a lot like his articles - yummy and informative! This cookbook not only contains soup recipes (his cream of broccoli is a family favorite) but Mr. Schwartz includes recipes for items to serve with it - breads, appetizers and delicious salads, as well as desserts for after!

- Yes, it's quirky (read: British-oriented with all the cute spelling and different names for food items), but the recipes are grouped usefully, the recipes look delicious and not painstaking to prepare, and the recipes also are not of food that's too esoteric to get ahold of at a good supermarket, for the most part.
There is lots of useful, practical information on hosting a party, including etiquette tips. And what is especially useful is the VARIETY of types of parties/occasions/celebrations this book provides pertinent information on.
Also, the presentatin is fabulous with great pictures, diagrams, etc.
If you ever want to host a party --be it a gala for 100+ or yummy snacks for friends on Oscar night or an intimate picnic....BUY THIS BOOK!
- I started a gourmet food group that meets once a month. My kids gave me this book for a birthday present which ties in for several reasons. I have the older version of this book. As far as I know , beyond the different cover and the difference in the title, the contents are very similar. There are sections about party planning (including equipment and materials listing, table etiquette etc; presentation and buffets), organizing your party food ( planning points very well done; cooking plans, shopping and storage, cook ahead stay calm, simple presentation, garnishing and decorating ); party themes (setting, scenes, food style, planning finger food, portions kebab and cocktail snacks, fork food, even a great section on differnt types of fondue, children parties, BBQ entertaining (just what I needed for an upcoming BBQ theme party etc); and party basics. I found some very good additional hints and techniques to help our upcoming meetings. There are sections for Dips, finger food, light bites, brunches etc , sensational soups , appetizers, dinner parties and festive main courses , stylist salads , eating outdoors and desserts. There are good recipes here for satay, chicken dishes , paella and other finger foods beyond the ordinary finger food that you might encounter at parties. The ones I want to try first for an upcoming party are possibly Peruvian salad, 3 colored fish kabobs, ceviche, corn fritters, iced melon soup, asparagus and oranges. There is also a nice index. You can't go wrong with this book. It is an all in one, well done, photographed and laid out guide with excellent and helpful hints, techniques and directions .
