  1. Pity there's no pictures, but the food is filling and tasty. I expect almost all sales will be to Americans of Finnish and part Finnish descent, like my wife, but I'm not and I can tell the rest of you - Finnish food is good! And these recipes make it easy to cook.

  2. Hi Taimi! It's been 40 Years, since we arrived from Our Homeland "Finland" to this land of Opportunities. I never knew you could Cook. Congratulations to Your Book. (Old Room-Mate Jane) If you get this, E-Mail me: jtymon@4link.net

  5. I have tried for years to duplicate my Finnish grandmother's cooking. Asking for her recipes is hopeless...in her mind she just throws things in a pan and they come out that tasty. (She is constantly telling me it is not worth my time because her only secret is that Finnish cows, chickens, and fish are much happier and treated nicer than American animals, and therefore taste better.) This book is the first (and only, so far) Finnish recipe book I've found that carries many of our family's traditional recipes. It is easy to follow and I have had success with every recipe I have tried.

3 comments about Time-Honored Norwegian Recipes: Adapted to the American Kitchen.
  1. This 128 page book printed in English, packs a variety of traditional Norwegian recipes into it with english measurements for easy cooking, and also tells you the norwegian name of the recipe. From cookies to main dishes, breads and meat, you can be certain something in here will entice you to cook up a full traditional Norwegian meal and leave no guest hungry. Not only does this book contain a fabulous selection of recipes, it also is steeped rich with Norwegian photographs, some in color, some in black and white. The beauty of the fjords, stave churches, and the old farmhouses will leave you in awe. many current photographs in full color may have you booking a flight to Norway sooner than you had anticipated! While your dinner is cooking, this book makes interesting reading, take care that your dinner is not burning! Many old norwegian kitchen utensils and bowls are pictured. Some are antique, some are new. Many of the items are from the Vesterheim Museum collection. A discussion of a traditional norwegian wedding is presented along with a beautiful picture of "The Bridal Procession in Sogn," painted by Hans Dahl c. 1890's. A bridal crown is also pictured in color. Color photographs of some bunads are featured. Illuminating stories of how bread and butter were made is re-told in this book, making for an amusing look back at one of the routine labor-intensive jobs that occupied a woman's place in the home. Much more is to be found in this book, I won't give it all away, but they are certainly giving this book away for the price! You will not be disappointed when you purchase this book. Purchase a spare to give away as a gift also!

  2. Two Norwegian women, one Norwegian American and one from Norway compiled the recipes, favorites of their husbands. Mrs. Xan's essays about recipes, pioneer days and Norway, accent the goodies.

The front cover shows two little lads in Norwegian costume eating cookies at Vesterheim. They are the sons of LeAnn and Stephen Bahr of Maple Grove, Minnesota.

The color section includes costumed people and the beautiful antiques of Norway and America found in the collection of Vesterheim, The Norwegian American Museum, Decorah, Iowa. Vesterheim is the largest folk art museum in America devoted to a single ethnic group.

The book covers the wedding in Norway, jewelry and silver, embroidery, historic 1896 photographs of Norway and those recently taken by Darrell Henning, curator at Vesterheim, and others.

New essays and illustrations include texts by Henrietta Bear of Gainesville, Florida, sister of Erna Oleson Xan; a feature on the folk art aprons of Evelinea Grimes of the Twin Cities, and more.

  3. This cute pocket-sized book has some quick and easy recipes and from what I have tried, they are pretty close to the recipes that my grandmother used to make when I was a child. The book is small but perfect for something that can be stored in a kitchen cupboard or drawer and is always right there at your fingertips ready to pull out anytime and quite frequently, too!

  1. I am not finnish but have studied and lived in finland over the course of a few years, and know it is very difficult to find any really informative real finnish recipes. This is simple and fun, I got it as a gift and love it!

  2. Fine Finnish Foods, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, is chock-full of recipes and notes about the best of Finnish food and culture. The recipes were collected by Gerry Kangas, a Finnish American who actively participates in the promotion of Finnish culture. The cover shows a birch leaf motif and calligraphy by Esther Feske.

In addition to wonderful recipes, Fine Finnish Foods also contains information on Finnish heritage and culture. There are pages devoted to Finnish Art, the Finnish-American Experience, and Finnish Table Prayer. 2 comments about Prairie Cooks: Glorified Rice, Three-Day Buns, and Other Reminiscences (Bur Oak Book).
  1. Let's just put it this way, I read the whole book in one sitting. In fact, I couldn't put the book down. The author wrote short histories and included recipes to go along with the family history. Of course along the way, she told some mighty funny stories, especially about how one of her sisters managed to set the out house on fire. Really funny. I haven't laughed so hard while reading a book in sometime. A definite buy --- even if I haven't tried her recipes. Most recipes are common to Scandinavian cooking and Scandinavian American cooking.

  2. This book was very dear to my heart as both my parents were of Norwegian descent and grew up close to where the author did in Western North Dakota. It's a wonderful portrait of what life was like in the rural Great Plains in the early part of the 20th century and a thought-provoking contrast to our lives today. And I never did get Mom's recipe for Glorified Rice so I was glad to find not one but several ingredient lists for this nostalgic dish!

4 comments about Delectably Danish: Recipes and Reflections.
  1. This book contains more than 100 recipes-from Racine's famous Danish kringles to the famous open-faced sandwiches. There are great fruit soups and the well-known frikadeller (Danish meat-ball) recipes.

Julie Jensen McDonald is noted for her novels about Danish immigrants in America, published by Iowa State University Press. This is her first cookbook.

The cover of this book shows a young woman in Solvang, California in Danish costume. Solvang is a major tourist attraction in America, first settled by the Danes from Iowa. The back cover depicts two charming children in Danish costumes holding a kringle at the O&H Danish Bakery in Racine, Wisconsin. Racine is America's largest Danish community with over 40,000 people of Danish heritage living there.

Recipes come from fabulous Danish cooks in Iowa, California, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska, all states with Danish populations. Special coverage is given to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and to Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa.

The 16 page color section of the book contains photographs of Danish foods, the street scenes and people of Solvang and works by Danish artists such as Christian Petersen at Iowa State University, Ames, and the Mount Rushmore sculpture by Gutzon Borglum.

  2. Delectably Danish: Recipes And Reflections is a flat-spined cookbook of uniquely Danish delicacies, from Danish Liver Loaf to Rum Soup, Irene's Danish Kringle, Tivoli Salad and so much more. Black-and-white and color photographs offer a visual peek into Danish culture, and the text gives an ultra-condensed rundown of Danish history and holidays, as well as famous Danes. A highly affordable introduction to Danish culinary culture, filled with easy- to-follow recipes.

  3. The book is very informative. But does not seem to have very many authentic Danish dishes. This is more of a Danish American recipe book. If your looking for authentic recipes, this is not the book you want.

  4. Friends and relatives rave at the food created using these recipes. The tid-bits of Danish and Danish-American history are fun for conversation while consuming the wonderful, authentic Danish dishes. These books are perfect gifts for friends who are of Danish descent, Danes by marriage, or are just wanna-be-Danes.

2 comments about Splendid Swedish Recipes.
  1. Splendid Swedish Recipes, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, is chock-full of the best recipes and notes on Swedish cuisine. Compiled by Kerstin Olsson Van Gilder, who came to America from Sweden in 1961, and refers to Swedish foods as "cooking the naturally delicious way." The Swedish diet consists mainly of fish (herring) and potatoes, making the food lighter than traditional American cuisine. This cookbook is inspired by the Swedish love of wholesome, natural foods. The cover shows a little girl in a Swedish folk-style outfit.

In addition to recipes, Splendid Swedish Recipes contains information on The Smorgasbord (a long table buffet Scandinavian tradition), Foods for Special Holidays and Seasons, Notable Sites and Events as well as historical information on the Swedish-American Experience. The book offers you plenty to choose from to make a Swedish feast for family and friends. Try the Swedish Kale Soup or the Swedish Meatballs. Stuffed Cabbage and Rye Bread will suit almost any table! And desserts are the Swedish specialty! Try the Coffee Bread or the Cocoa Balls to end the perfect meal! This is just a sampling of what is offered!

This book is excellent for personal collections and as a gift for anyone interested in Swedish cooking and heritage.

  2. I got this cookbook as a Christmas give for my Swedish wife. She loves the dessert recipies, especially the Cocoa Balls and the Coffee Bread. If you combine this book with "Good Food from Sweden" by Inga Norberg, you'll never lack for recipies to remind you of your Swedish roots.
