5 comments about Potato Salad: Fifty Favorite Recipes.
  1. WONDERFUL NEW APPROACHES TO POTATO SALAD. RECIPES ARE CLEAR AND SIMPLE. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE BEAUTIFUL. LOVED THE HEARTWARMING AND AMUSING STORIES THAT ACCOMPANY THE RECIPES.

  2. Well actually it probably has your mother's potato salad and a whole lot more. From the traditional to the revolutionary, all the bases are covered in this book. I particularly like Tarragon and Lamb Potato Salad and Jansson's Temptation. If the spud's your thing, you must have this book.

  3. Having purchased this book hot off the press and cooking two of the recipes for Mother's Day, I have to say, this is a keepa! Brilliant idea to create a compilation of recipes focusing on one food. There's a spud recipe here for every kind of meal you could possibly imagine, from the very simple to the extraordinarily elegant. A must for every kitchen!

  4. The title "Potato Salad" on the cover of this cook book intrigued me. I couldn't think of many variations of such an old fashioned dish. To me just omitting eggs or mustard , selecting salad dressing in preference to mayonnaise is about the extent of my repertoire .

I bought the book because potato salad is just about my favorite food. The variety of potato salad recipes is very surprising. Being a lover of fish I was amazed at the many kinds of fish that blend deliciously with potatoes in a salad.

Barbara has not only found tasty potato salad recipes from all over the world, she has made them simple to follow and noted substitutes where you may need them.

This is a great cook book made simple and will certainly be on my gift list.

  5. Even if you are an "occasional" cook, this book is fantastic! Most potato salads could be a meal. The information in the chapter called "The Basics" is invaluable for creating superb potato salad. After trying eight recipes, Barbara Lauterbach's "Potato Salad" will be a mainstay in my kitchen.

5 comments about The Big Book of Vegetarian: More Than 225 Recipes for Breakfasts, Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Sandwiches, Main Dishes, Sides, Breads, and Desserts (The Big Book of).
  1. This is an excellent cookbook, lots of variety, well-written, visually pleasing...definitely a good choice for anyone who appreciates easy-to-prepare, delicious recipes.

  2. This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I have been vegetarian for many years and I am an avid cook, and this book has provided nothing but perfect food, without meat, every time I have used it. The salads are great, the breakfast foods are great, the entrees are great. You name it, in this book, it's all good.
The recipes are well-tested and well-written recipes. A must have.

  3. Great cookbook, has trendy new way to look at origional ingredients.
    Made Tomato Bisque today.... Yumm..

  4. I received this book as a present, and I am very pleasantly surprised by this book. This book contains modern and creative twists on traditional American dishes as well as other food of ethnic origin making its way into mainstream. All the dishes I've made from it have turned out to be very delicious, the steps are simple to follow, and most of the ingredients are available at well-stocked supermakets. I was surprised how many things I used to have to buy can be made so easy with so little time or effort. This was what I had hoped my Moosewood cookbook would be, but this book actually succeeds because of it is more focused, placing emphasis on beauty through simplicity rather than purely just inventiveness.
Another part I really like about this book is that it actually contain a decent breakfast section. From now on I no longer have to rely on omlettes or toast for breakfast, but instead I can have banana french toast, different muffins, etc.
The recipes here are very straightforward, so they are suitable for most levels of cooks. The only possible drawback is that there are no pictures (though you won't need them), and there are no directions on preparation techniques, so I would suggest this book for those with at least some rudimentary kitchen skills.

  5. This really is a great cookbook. Easy to follow recipes (although some ingredients are hard to find in a small town in the middle of nowhere, where we live), and everything tastes good. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their cooking.

3 comments about The Wiggles: Yummy, Yummy: Fruit Salad (Wiggles).
  1. The title of this book, has a completed match with the Wiggles song, "(Fruit Salad)" because The Wiggles take turns telling each of the 4 steps in order. What I also love about (Yummy, Yummy Fruit Salad) is that you can learn to make your own fruit salad from The Wiggles directions by singing that song, then you'll have yummy fruit salad too-just like Greg, Anthony, Jeff and Murray.

  2. My daughter has discovered that her world is filled with interesting scents! Now instead of putting everything into her mouth, now it's straight to her nose! So a board book about The Wiggles, one of her favorite Wiggles' songs - Yummy, Yummy fruit salad and that it also smells makes this book one we read often through out the day!! Our book included 14 scratch and sniff apples, bananas, watermelon and grapes stickers. You could probably let your toddler place the stickers on each page, but I did this before I gave the book to my daughter so that she thinks it's part of the book and not stickers to peel off. The stickers smell so good and the book does not follow the song word for word, but it's close enough! Perfect for the Wiggles fan in your home!!!!

  3. My daughter loves this book. We read it over and over. She loves to scratch and sniff the fruit stickers. I think watermelon is our favorite!

4 comments about Joy of Cooking: All About Salads & Dressings.
  1. Cooking in the summer is drag. It can make your whole house hot. I recently found a great new book I fell in love with. This book on salads and dressing is produced by the Joy of Cooking folks. So you know they will provide excellent recipes. I have always had a hard time creating salad dressings, and original salads. Guess what? This book does it will ease. This book is well organized, and easy to read. I love all of the extra tips and extra material that they add to the book. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have.

  2. This book has a great variety of classical and new salads. They all are not only delicious, but the recipies are well-written and thorough. The book also contains other cooking tips that help make your salads better. What a great resource for summer cooking.

  3. I highly recommend this book. The book has 8 chapters dedicated to different kinds of salads and they're:
    1. About salads
    2 About green salads.
    3. About vegetable and savory fruit salads
    4. About fruit and molded salads
    5. About Bean & Grain salads
    6. About fish and shellfish salads
    7. About meat and poultry salads
    8. About salad dressings.

I've tried several salad & salad dressing recipes and they were tasty and delicious. They have become instant hits at the family and friends gatherings. The recipes are quick and easy to apply. I'm new to cooking and I found the explanations and steps are so easy. The book is definitely worth the money I paid for.

  4. All of these specialty cookbooks by Joy of Cooking hit their mark by providing need to know information and easy but elegant recipes. If you love salads -- a must have for your cookbook collection.

2 comments about Best American Side Dishes (Best Recipe).
  1. A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. If you do not own "The New Best Recipes" by the same editor you will like this book, if you do, read on.

The book is outlined as follows:
    1. Appetizers
    2. Salads
    3. Vegetables Sides and Casseroles
    4. Potato Sides and Casseroles
    5. Rice, Grain and Bean Sides and Casseroles

The "Side Dishes" by the editors of Cooks Illustrated Magazine is a nice book provided that you do not own either "Italian Classics" or "Best Recipes" by the same editors. If you own either of these two books (as I do) you will find that this book contains many of the same recipes. The books are not entirely duplicative, but at least 50% of all the recipes are in either and sometimes both of the other two books.

In the first chapter on Appetizers even the order of the recipes is the same as "The New Best Recipe" book. I stopped looking after the first five recipes were the same, and in the same order.

Many of the recipes in this book have a strong Italian influence. Most of these recipes are Italian classics. The recipes themselves are very good, and authentically Italian when appropriate. There are also some Mexican and French recipes included as well.

If you don't own either "Italian Classics" or "Best Recipes" this is a nice book. The recipes are strong and the dishes routinely turn out well. This book is written in the usual Cooks Illustrated Style. The writers tell you what they tried that did and did not work followed by the recipe. If you don't plan to purchase "The New Best Recipe" by the editors of Cooks Illustrated I recommend this book. However, I would suggest that you purchase "Best Recipe" instead since it covers many more recipes including most if not all of these.

  2. I have used this cookbook over and over again, it's an excellent adjunct to my cookbook library. In fact, I've enjoyed it (and it's recipes) so much I purchased two copies as gifts for two "foodie" friends. They each had complimented a dish I prepared from the cookbook--I know they will like the gift! The recipes are sophisticated enough to satisfy their "foodiness" yet simple enough to accomplish fairly quickly.
