  1. Rick Black's Cabin Cookin': The Very Best Recipes for Beef, Pork, Poultry, Seafood, and Wild Game for Dutch Ovens, Skillets, and Grills lives up to its title with step-by-step instructions for outdoor taste sensations. From "Skillet Sloppy Joes" to "Birds Be A-Chirpin' Chili Mac", "Caribbean Cabin Kebabs", "Sunday Morning Spice Cake" and much more, Rick Black's Cabin Cookin' is ideal for campers and outdoorsmen with a taste for seafood, domestic and wild game, all types of vegetables, and anything that can be prepared in heavy foil. A brief introduction and an index round out this compendium, which largely lets its mouth-watering recipes speak for themselves.

  2. This is a very easy to follow cook book with some tasty recipes. A good reference for scout leaders for camp out cooking.

  1. Purchased this cookbook after a recommendation from a friend. I would pass on the recommendation! Excellent recipes that are easy and delicious.

  2. I bought this cookbook at a school book fair and have never regretted it. What a fantastic and easy guide to chicken preparation and presentation.

I like this particular book for a number of reasons. I love the size (9 1/2' by 7"), the glossy pictorial hard covers, and the spiral-bound pages. This last point allows the book to remain open while in use. No heavy objects on one side to keep it open while the cooks uses the other. There are glossy photographs for about every four to five recipes. I like one for every recipe, but this is second best with plenty of photos.

Interspersed throughout are boxed in tidbits or instructions for specific tasks. Examples of instructions: carving a roast chicken, using garlic, storing fresh herbs, to skin or not to skin, and cutting up a raw chicken. Experienced cooks may brush this last one by, but they all had to learn somewhere.

And, of course, the recipes. Zowie!! There are the standards: classic fried chicken and grilled chicken breasts. However, GH presents some new and interesting recipes and twists on old. Try this yummy dish: Grilled Chicken Breasts Saltimbocca (means "jump in your mouth") and is made by adding a slice of prosciutto and a fresh sage leaf to each breast before grilling.

The book offers a number of international dishes. Try Chicken Mole, a Mexican dish with dried chilies, spices, seeds, and unsweetened chocolate, served over rice. Another great one is Moroccan-Style Tagine, a savory stew with chicken, spices, dark raisins, green olives, and served over couscous. Still another is Thai Chicken Sate, a dish found everywhere in Bangkok from vendors cooking and selling their wares on the streets. It is chicken pieces skewered and grilled and served with a dipping sauce made of coconut milk, soy sauce, peanut butter and a side dish of pickled cucumbers. Oh, heavenly!

This is one of those cookbooks the busy person cannot do without. The only trick is having ingredients on-hand before beginning to cook. The rest is easy and oh, so tasty!

  3. I love this book! It gives the prep time and the cooking time for each recipe. It lists the nutrition values (calories, fat, protein, etc.) and seems to consist mainly of fairly healthy choices. And the recipes are delicious and generally easy.

I've made the Chicken Enchiladas and the Chicken Stuffed with Basil and Sun-Dried Tomatoes. The last was SO fast and easy I plan to put it in regular rotation (and I've made it twice this week alone). The enchiladas were delicious and a big hit, although a smidge more work.

Great ease of use and great ideas in this book.

  1. If you have to eat low fat you know it can be rather tasteless sometimes. This book aims at giving you lots of variety and flavors to play with. You could make a different dish every day for quite a while and never repeat. Nice size print is easily readable and nutitional information is given at end of recipes for those who need or want to keep track.

2 comments about Bistro Chicken: 100 Easy Yet Elegant Recipes with French Flair.
  1. I bought this book at my bookstore about a month ago. I have tried several of the recipes and they are easy to do and delicious. The paella, the chicken with carmelized onions are the most recent ones.
The ingredients are (usually) easy to get, the recipes simple to follow and the results are wonderful. Highly recommend.

  2. I love cookbooks, I love to cook, and I love to eat. Bistro Chicken delivers on all accounts. Not only are the recipes creative but the instructions are easy to follow. More importantly, every dish I've tried has been delicious.

Now, whenever I'm going to cook chicken, I go to Bistro Chicken for something new, creative, and delicious.

Buy this book, you'll be happy you did.

  1. I purchased a copy of this book originally in 1985. back when I didn't know what to do with a chicken except shake & bake.I have lived through my entire married life with it. I lost my original copy when I moved this year, and I was honestly heartbroken, as it is long out of print. I sit here on the verge of processing my shopping cart, wiping tears from my cheeks. I love this book, I can't make a bird without it. There is no substitute for the instructional pictures. I was lost at Thanksgiving, as I always open this book before I turn on the oven, and I never carved without it beside me. My Turkey was a little messy this year!

  2. This cookbook is a must-have staple cookbook. Wanna cook chicken right? Check out this book. It teaches you the most essential techniques for handling chicken: slow braising, basting, roasting, stuffing, correct cutting, carving, etc.

I've made a lot of fantastic dishes from this non-descrip book, but it truly is an American classic. It even had some recipes that I didn't expect, like claypot chicken recipes. So many chicken dishes to peruse. I always turn to this cookbook for everyday fare.

  1. Art Ginsburg's "Mr. Food Cooks Chicken" is a must for new cooks and accomplished cooks. I have purchased this book, and several other Mr Food books, for each of my three daughters and several other young people. As an accomplished chef it is easy to prepare a dish, it is harder to pass this on to a new cook. All my daughters and others that I have passed "Mr. Food Cooks Chicken" on to have thanked me over and over again. The book handles scores or recipes for chicken. Each recipe is simple, and explained clearly so that a new cook can understand the process. For those of us that think we are masters of the four-burner, this book will introduce new recipes that we may have heard of or tasted before but didn't know how to reproduce. Yes an old dog can learn new and delicious tricks with chicken thanks to "Mr Food".

No new cook or old cook should be without this book in their kitchen.

  2. Can we talk? I sooo can't cook. Not at all. I have trouble boiling water and scrambling eggs. And even I can make a recipe out of this book.

Mr. Food is better (and funnier!) then my high school home ec teacher. His recipes are simple, with basic ingrediants, and most importantly - are delicious.

I have a few stand by favorites and every now and again, I'll try a recipe that's "new". This is by far one of my favorite cookbooks.

Whether you're an experienced cook or a (ahem!) novice like myself, I highly recommend this book.

  3. Before buying this book you should be aware that Mr Food's favorite ingredient is a can of soup - tomato soup, cream of mushroom soup, and onion soup being his favorites. Most recipes consist of a couple of common prepared items such as soup, soy sauce, canned fruits and vegetables, or bottled dressing combined with the chicken. There are a handful of simple from scratch recipes, but the bulk of these recipes are similar to those found in advertisement to promote the use of a particular convenience item. These are for the most part very good versions of this style of cooking and I enjoy using them every now and them. Some people think this is the only way to cook and others turn up their nose at it. Just be forewarned that while you will get quick and tasty, you are not going to get fresh and healthy or anything remotely authentic.

  4. I have about 8 of his cookbooks.
