  1. I got this book years ago when my family first developed enthusiasm for Mexican food. Terrific book for cooks new to Mexican food. It describes the specialty ingredients and their preparation. Recipes are beautifully presented with pictures and excellent step-by-step directions. Best of all, the author includes a nice mix of traditional recipes and more unusual ones. This book gave me confidence to tackle Mexican cuisine and several recipes are now favorites. I write this as -- several years after publication -- I seek a pristine copy to buy as a gift for friends. Buy it and enjoy! (P.S.: I have no connection to the author, publisher, etc.)

  2. A decent offering ...

    Strengths:
    * Lavishly stocked with full color photos (typical for Hermes House books, which seem to emphasize photos over substance)
    * Most recipes have helpful head notes.
    * Easy to read instructions and lists of ingredients.
    * Decent, if unspectacular, overview of ingredients.

    Complaint:
    * Head notes, while present for most recipes, are too anemic for my preference.
    * Aside from a very top-level chapter grouping (by course/subject), recipes appear within any given section without any discernable order whatsoever - alphabetical or otherwise. Don't you just LOVE publishers who hire incompetent editors, pay them more then the authors who write the books they're supposed to be in charge of grooming ... only to come up with books containing idiotic organization blunders like this ? Whoever was SUPPOSED to edit this book for HH should have their tender parts lopped off, cross-scored with a sharp knife, lightly dredged in generously salted flour, deep fried in their own lard, and then served back to them, garnished with finely minced hot green chilies.

Overall, this is a decent introductory book on ingredients and basic recipes typical in Mexican cuisine. More serious readers are referred to more substantial and competent works by people like Rick Bayless. It's still a decent book, despite its organizational and editing shortcomings.

  1. This cookbook presents the classic recipes of Cajun/Creole and Mexican/American cultures. The recipes are easy to follow with several tips and helpful hints on how to prepare these recipes. Historical and humorous comments are sprinkled throughout the cookbook.

  2. If you like to cook and enjoy delicious food, you will love this easy-to-read, cookbook, "In the Kitchen with Papa Wiltz." The recipes are very easy to follow, and written in a very organized manner on each page. Every recipe in this cookbook is a favorite of mine, and there are many . My mouth watered upon reading about the Pork Chile Verde, the Shrimp Creole, the Bananas Foster, and the Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce, to name a few. Each recipe is tried and true, by the author himself, who learned how to prepare these dishes from his mom, while growing up in Louisiana. This cookbook is a treasure, and I am so thrilled with it. I plan on buying an additional copy or two, to give as gifts--especially to some newly-wed family members and friends!

2 comments about Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook (Handstand Kids) (Handstand Kids) (Handstand Kids) (Handstand Kids).
  1. Handstand Kids offers another excellent book for kids who like to cook. After their successful first cookbook (Handstand Kids Italian Cookbook, 2007), they have followed up with a Mexican recipe book.

Yvette Garfield created Handstand Kids as a way to help educate children to learn how to cook, to find out about other cultures and languages, but also to encourage community involvement. The cast of characters in Handstand Kids reminds me of the cast of Sesame Street with children of different ethnicities and one child that is even in a wheelchair.

In their latest book, Cricket Azima, a noted chef that teaches children how to cook healthy foods in New York City, developed the recipes. Azima can also be seen in Kiwi Magazine (May Media Group), a family magazine encouraging a healthier lifestyle.

To review a children's cookbook, what would be the optimum way to approach it? Well, to me it seemed obvious, give it to my children! They were very excited as Handstand Kids has a way of presenting their cookbooks in a fun and clever manner. The first book on Italian food was presented in a pizza box and included a chef's toque! This book was no different by coming in a tortilla bag and included an oven mitt! Both of my children were very excited as this was like the toy in the cereal box!

They looked over the recipes and decided to try a couple. My 5-year old loves cheese sandwiches, and he wanted to try and make the Grilled Cheese to Quesadillas. He felt that the recipe was easy-to-follow and after spending time creating his own meal, he was interested in trying something new (he's not a fan of sour cream). My 8-year old is an independent reader, and his motor skills are more refined, so he took on Tacos Terrificos. He was very impressed with the outcome and felt that he had made the best meal ever!

With Internet, web cameras, the easy of traveling and satellite television, we are in an ever-shrinking world. As parents, we need to help our children learn about different people, cultures, languages and to realize how lucky we are and how to help people in need.

I highly recommend this cookbook for all children. The recipes are graded on skill level, so younger children and older kids can enjoy this book. The recipes are healthy and offer choices (the taco recipe says to use fish, beef, chicken or tofu). They are also easy-to-follow. Not only will your children learn new cooking skills, but they will learn about Spanish, Mexican culture and how to utilize their new cooking skills to help people in need. This would be a great idea for a gift, the library, as well as for elementary schools.

  2. I would highly recommend The Handstand Kids Cookbooks to anyone with children or anyone who needs a gift idea for a child. The books are both fun and educational, providing kids the opportunity to learn about countries all over the world. The creation of the Handstand Kids books is truly a brilliant and unique idea. I have been giving the books out as birthday and holiday gifts to all the children I know and it has really been a hit.
