  1. This is an excellent book on Greek cookery. It is filled with tasty recipes that you would find served in any Greek home. Considering some of the cookbooks you see these days that are filled with fancy recipes that no one has time to make, this book is a delight!

  2. Best of Greek Cuisine: Cooking With Georgia by Georgia Sarianides offers easy-to-follow recipes that represent the basics of Greek cuisine. Chef Sarianides was born in Amalada in Peloponnese, Greece, and this cookbook contains the traditional Greek recipes that she learned in her Mother's kitchen, and also those that she has created herself. All of the recipes are uncomplicated, delicious, and satisfying.

This 176-page cookbook is divided into five sections, Soups, Salads, and Vegetables, Savory Pies, Main Meals, Fish, and Pastries. The recipes represent a wide selection of traditional Greek foods, including such favorites as spanakopita, dolmades, pastitsio, and Greek meatballs. The instructions are straightforward and easy to follow, and most recipes are prefaced with additional background information or serving suggestions. Recipe titles are in English, followed by the Greek translation. The cookbook does not offer photographs, although black and white line drawings are included.

I particularly enjoyed the additional reference material this cookbook had to offer. For example, the Herbs and Spices section lists and defines the popular seasonings used in Greek cooking, such as basil, oregano, and olive oil. The General Food Tips section provides practical advice for choosing, preparing, and storing all types of foods, including garlic, tomatoes, and chicken. The Working with Phyllo dough section provides valuable tips and advice, and the Wine Selections section outlines the origin of six different Greek wines, and offers serving suggestions.

I highly recommend this cookbook as a wonderful source of traditional Greek recipes, and as a valuable reference for anyone interested in Greek cuisine.

  1. Gourmet is the best cooking magazine and the "Best of" books are even better. Forget the magazine, just get these books. No tiresome ads for Rolex and rich people on pristine tropical beaches. Just the food and great recipes. The thyme scented apple galette (either in this issue or another one) was an instant winner in my house. The Greek recipes are great. I particularly remember the recipe for gigantic lima beans.

Most recipes are thoughtfully staged. They tell what can be done ahead of time. They also give suggestions on complimentary dishes.

All this and in durable hardback.

  2. My first of " The Best of Gourmet" I purchased from the Department store just because it was on sale.
In that same evening I was cooking by that book. Now I am hunting for all editions.
Beautiful photos and absolutely the best gourmet food recipes, easy to follow and you will get what its promised.
I know, you will love it.
Also, what a great section " Featuring the flavours of ....(every edition will have different countries).

  1. If you're looking for wonderful color photos of the food and lengthly verbage on the background and food history, this isn't the book of Greek cooking for you. But if you want fantastic tasting Greek food (as we're spoilt here in Motown with Greektown) this book is it. The finest lamb, pork and fish dishes with Greek touch. My favorites are the pastitsio, lamb stew with green beans. Opaa!

  2. Ok, I usually don't write reviews but this book deserves it and not just because I am from Detroit. I love Greektown and all these recipes are wonderful and I can bring the taste of Greektown to my home and bake whenever I feel like it. I've made lots of Baklava but this is the best tasting Baklave recipe (page 147) I've ever made. If you like Roast Stuffed Chicken, you've got 2 great recipes in here. Artchokes??? in here too, and great. Leg of Lamb, you got about 20 lamb recipes in here and you have a glossery and food conversions, kitchen hints, learn all about honey. Look, this is probably the best cookbook on Greek Cuisine. Enjoy!

  3. I love this cookbook. Every recipe turns out great. It is easy to follow and very user friendly.

  1. This is Greek food distilled to purity...the real thing, the stuff of the centuries. This book probably the best Greek cookbook I own -- and I own dozens of them. The author writes about food for a Greek publication, and really knows her stuff. She went in search of the authentic Greek cuisine of our grandmothers, far from the greasy moussaka and insipid souvlaki of touristy Greece. It's not the Greek food trying to be French or American, not masquerading as something pretentious, using alien ingredients and modern short-cuts. Kremezi's quest for the authentic took her to the back roads, the tiny islands, where the fundamentals of Greek food -- the olive oil, the figs, the wild greens, the fresh fish -- are treated the same way they have been for thousands of years. Each page is a revelation, a journey, a deeply satisfying treasure ---- found. The book is rich in the history, lore, detailed preparation of each component of the meal. Also, it's a large-format, coffee-table book, full of pictures of the authentic Greece the author is seeking and is concentrating on so well--the Greece that was, and in some areas, still is. It is a world of perfect blue skies, white stone houses -- a world apart from the modern, noisy existence the "other" Greece can be.

  2. This probably the best written and most beautifully designed Greek cookbook that I've come across. The photographs are absolutely stunning and certainly inspire one to want to start cooking - pronto! The recipes seem to come close the fare I fell in love with in the little family-run tavernas of Crete. The author is a food writer for a Greek magazine and has a multitude of worthwhile insights on the nature of Hellenic gastronomy and foodways. I'd say that if you could have only one Greek cookbook (tragic as that would be), this would be it.

  3. This lovely cookbook combines authentic recipes with stunningly beautiful photographs of food and landscapes. Each recipe is accompanied by background information on traditions, history, and the specific place of origin. Many of the recipes are featured in full-page photographs. The combination of color, lighting, and authentic backdrops gives these images an exquisite beauty. Other excellent photographs show the people of Greece involved in traditional tasks such as making cheeses and breads, milking sheep, and harvesting grapes and olives. The recipes are detailed and delicious. The text is infused with the author's experiences growing up in Greece, along with folklore and references to classic writings. This book is a feast for the eyes, palate, and intellect.

  1. I have visited Greece many times, and have wanted a cookbook that had recipes for the delicious food I have eaten there that would allow me to prepare this great cuisine at home. This is the first cookbook that has met my needs. The recipe for pork souvlaki is outstanding, and I have never had a dish turn out less than wonderful from this book. It needs to be reprinted!!

  2. After recently spending 2 months in Greece and thoroughly enjoying the Greek cuisine, I was delighted to find this comprehensive yet readible guide. The author shares insight into the essentials for setting up a Greek kitchen and preparing the recipes in the traditional way along with modern preparation tips. I loved her way of sharing the fellowship and joy of the Greek dining experience. Flavors of Greece made me homesick!

  3. Rosemary Barron's Flavors Of Greece is as much a celebration of Greek culinary tradition as it is a compendium of mouth-watering recipes. Eschewing so-called "haute cuisine" Rosemary offers over 250 recipes meant to be created with simple ingredients, hearty industry, and a passion for aroma, texture, and putting so much flavor into one's creation that a tiny appetizer can seem like a meal. Sumptuous dishes offered range from Fried Cheese to Sausage and Potato Omelet, Grilled Octopus, Saffron Rice with Mussels, Sweet Chestnuts and Lemon Cheese, and much more. Explicit instructions and brief tidbits, tips, and trivia concerning various dishes makes Flavors Of Greece fun to read and easy to follow.

  4. If you love Mediterranean food this is a great cookbook to add to your library.

The author does a nice job with her overview of Greek cooking ingredients. The glossary of Greek terms is also very useful. The author has included a nice recipe for a fresh cheese that is lovely. Just be warned it is made with half and half so your cardiologist will not approve. I would describe it as Greek Mascarpone.

The book is organized as follows:
    The Greek Kitchen
    Appetizers
    Soups
    Light Meals
    Fish and Seafood
    Chicken and Game
    Meats
    Vegetables and Salads
    Pilafs and Pasta
    Bread
    Pies, Pastries, Cakes and Cookies
Fruit Desserts, Puddings and Creams, and Candy
    Sauces

This book is full of wonderful recipes. I have not made one yet that wasn't a winner and I have made approximately 1/3 of the recipes in the book.

If you are looking for a good Greek cookbook that is fairly comprehensive this is a nice choice.

  5. Delicious, authentic, healthy food...just make sure you have a lot of lemons and honey on hand, AND be prepared that some of the simplest recipes allow for 30 minutes or more of "sweat" time for cucumbers, eggplant, etc...read and plan ahead. I have never made anything out of this book that my family & friends didn't LOVE...originally purchased the 1991 ed. at a library book sale for 50 cents... would buy it again at full price in a second! Also has a really wonderful glossary of greek staples in the beginning!

  1. I have relied on this book for over 25 years. I always receive compliments from the "old Greeks" in my family about my Greek cooking - saying I cook just like my great-grandmother and aunt (the highest compliment there is in my family). Many of the tips my aunt taught me are in this book. I will definatly pass it down to my daughter.
